The Dodge Stratus is a mid-size car that was introduced by Dodge in December 1994 and was based on the 4-door sedan Chrysler JA platform. The Stratus, Plymouth Breeze, and Chrysler Cirrus were all on Car and Driver magazine's Ten Best list for 1996 and 1997. It received critical acclaim at launch, but ratings fell over time. An updated version of the Stratus was introduced for 2001, with the Cirrus being renamed as the Chrysler Sebring, and a coupé model was also added to the range. Production ended in early 2006 at the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant after building 1,308,123 Stratus and Sebrings since 2000.

The Dodge Avenger replaced the Stratus nameplate in early 2007 for the 2008 model year.

After the discontinuation of the Stratus sedan in 2006, the assembly line and tooling were sold to the Russian concern, GAZ, which manufactured 9,000 units of a very slightly modified Stratus from 2008 through 2010 called the Volga Siber.

Additionally, the front passenger's side ball stud separated from the ball joint housing, and the front passenger's side tire was stuck on the fender, preventing the engine from falling onto the ground. The failure almost caused a collision. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. While the vehicle was being placed on the flatbed tow truck, the oil filter fractured and detached. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 7 recalls for different components of the 2004 Dodge Stratus.

  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
  • Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain model year 2000-2005 Eclipse vehicles manufactured April 5, 1999, to December 17, 2004, 2001-2005 Eclipse Spyder vehicles manufactured January 19, 2000, to March 18, 2005, 2001-2005 Chrysler Sebring vehicles manufactured April 17, 2000, to February 21, 2005, and 2001-2005 Dodge Stratus vehicles manufactured April 17, 2000, to February 22, 2005. In the affected vehicles, the passenger side sun visor may be folded down in such a position that, if the passenger frontal air bag deploys, the passenger side sun visor may detach.
  • Consequence: If the passenger side sun visor detaches and is propelled rearward, there is an increased risk of occupant injury.
  • Remedy: MMNA will notify their owners, and Chrysler will notify the Chrysler and Dodge owners. Dealers will install a tether strap to retain the passenger sun visor, free of charge. The recall began on July 20, 2015. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-15-005. Chrysler and Dodge owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is R30.

THE SUBJECT BALL JOINTS WERE SOLD AS FOUR PART NUMBERS, D10945, D10946, G10945, AND G10946. THE AFFECTED CONTROL ARMS, D10945 AND D10946, ARE STAMPED WITH THE FOLLOWING DATES ON THE BALL JOINTS: 134308, 135708, 100109, 102709, 104109, 105509, 107609, 108909, 110309, 113209, AND 116609. THE G10945 AND G10946 ARE THE SAME PART AS THE D10945 AND D10946 RESPECTIVELY. THEY ARE LABELED DIFFERENTLY DEPENDING ON THE AFTERMARKET CUSTOMER.
  • Consequence: SEPARATION OF THE BALL STUD FROM THE SOCKET OF THE BALL JOINT HOUSING WOULD ALLOW THE CONTROL ARM TO COLLAPSE AND THE WHEEL TO FOLD IN CAUSING LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A CRASH.

    I purchased a Dodge Stratus SE V6 2.7L in 2004. Unfortunately, within two years, I had to replace the transmission and battery. I found changing the battery to be a bit challenging as it is located behind the driver's side tire underneath the panel. Additionally, the recommended spark plugs caused too many misfires. The anti-freeze reservoir was of poor quality and needed replacing as it started to melt with the recommended antifreeze. I had to replace the fuel filter twice. The car did not perform well driving uphill and lacked power. Despite these issues, I appreciate the time I had with this car, but I will be exploring other vehicle options in the future.

    I purchased my Stratus SXT 2.7L V6 in late 2004, just as the line was coming to the end of its run. It cost me $17,000, which was a fair price at the time. For the first 40,000 miles, the car ran smoothly and without any issues. However, after that point, I began to experience a number of problems. The transmission started leaking and a pump failed, the coolant bottle ruptured, the entire brake system had to be replaced at a cost of $1,500, and the AC stopped working. Additionally, I had to run the V6 on pure synthetic oil due to the engine's noted sludging problems. All of these issues have been costly, and I have put $2,500 into the car this year alone. Despite these challenges, I still believe that the Stratus SXT is a decent car, and I am hopeful that I can get a few more years out of it. While I have had some negative experiences with American cars in the past, I am not ready to give up on them entirely. I will continue to do my research and make informed decisions when it comes to purchasing new vehicles.

    I initially liked this car, but I now wish I had purchased something different. While it has been an okay car, the shifting between gears is not very smooth and can cause the whole car to shake. Recently, I had to take it in for repairs because the back strut had gone bad. The mechanic informed me that the car was so rusted that the strut had disconnected from the car itself. My brother-in-law, who is a very honest car repairman, expressed concern about the safety of driving this 'tin can' around. Additionally, the shocks are not as good as those on my husband's Ford Taurus.

    This car is definitely a blast to drive, especially for a family sedan. However, it has required a fair amount of maintenance. I have had to replace the transmission (I purchased it at 53k miles, and it now has 79k miles), the head gasket, the water pump, the brake switch, all four power window regulators, the alternator, a weather strip on the top side of the windshield that came loose and flopped around, the blower motor resistor, and I have been experiencing an intermittent rough idle that three new sets of plugs and two new sets of wires have not been able to fix. Additionally, I currently have a control arm that is making noise. Despite these issues, I still enjoy driving this car, but I do wish I didn't have to make so many trips to the shop.

    Congratulations on your first car purchase! It sounds like you got a great deal on a car that is in good condition with only 84,000 miles. The fresh set of tires is a nice bonus too. Overall, it seems like a very good buy. The car rides smoothly and has a nice low feeling. Even though it's a coupe, the back seat is surprisingly large and comfortable. The trunk space is also quite spacious, as you found out during your grocery run. While the build quality may not be perfect, with the front and rear bumper made of cheap plastic and the dashboard bulging out when hot, it's still a reliable and sporty car.     Overall, I think the car is decent. I traded in my '99 Pontiac Grand Prix with 182,000 miles for this '04 Dodge Stratus with 74,000 miles. I have a long commute to and from work, and I thought the MPG difference would be worth it. Unfortunately, the MPG's for the two cars during my ownership have been almost identical. Also, as a tall man with a wife and two kids, it's a bit of a tight squeeze for us all after a grocery store trip. The front floorboards are spacious, but the back is lacking. Additionally, the handbrake is too far away for a driver that has to put the seat back a bit. However, I do appreciate the 4 cupholders. My biggest complaint is that the car shifts very roughly!
