2006 Dodge Stratus problems
The Dodge Stratus is a mid-size car that was introduced by Dodge in December 1994 and was based on the 4-door sedan Chrysler JA platform. The Stratus, Plymouth Breeze, and Chrysler Cirrus were all on Car and Driver magazine's Ten Best list for 1996 and 1997. It received critical acclaim at launch, but ratings fell over time. An updated version of the Stratus was introduced for 2001, with the Cirrus being renamed as the Chrysler Sebring, and a coupé model was also added to the range. Production ended in early 2006 at the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant after building 1,308,123 Stratus and Sebrings since 2000.
The Dodge Avenger replaced the Stratus nameplate in early 2007 for the 2008 model year.
After the discontinuation of the Stratus sedan in 2006, the assembly line and tooling were sold to the Russian concern, GAZ, which manufactured 9,000 units of a very slightly modified Stratus from 2008 through 2010 called the Volga Siber.

2006 Dodge Stratus recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2006 Dodge Stratus.
- Manufacturer: FEDERAL-MOGUL CORPORATION
- Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:LOWER ARM
- Summary: FEDERAL-MOGUL IS RECALLING CERTAIN REPLACEMENT CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLIES, PART NUMBERS K7425, 10945, FA4510X, K7427, 10946, AND FA4611X, SOLD FOR USE ON VARIOUS PASSENGER VEHICLES LISTED ABOVE. THE BALL JOINT ON THE CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY CAN FAIL CAUSING THE BALL STUD TO WEAR THROUGH THE CONTROL ARM HOUSING RESULTING IN NOISE AND/OR SEPARATION OF THE BALL STUD FROM THE HOUSING.
- Consequence: IF THERE IS A SEPARATION OF THE BALL STUD FROM THE HOUSING, THE DRIVER CAN LOOSE STEERING CONTROL, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A VEHICLE CRASH.
- Remedy: FEDERAL-MOGUL WILL NOTIFY OWNERS OF RECORD AND REPLACE THE AFFECTED CONTROL ARMS FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON JANUARY 28, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT FEDERAL-MOGUL AT 1-877-489-6659.
- Manufacturer: QUALIS AUTOMOTIVE LLC
- Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:LOWER BALL JOINT
- Summary: QUALIS AUTOMOTIVE IS RECALLING CERTAIN AFTERMARKET BALL JOINTS SOLD FOR USE ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE SOCKET MAY HAVE BEEN EXCESSIVELY HARDENED WHICH COULD CAUSE IT TO CRACK NEAR THE RETAINING RING GROOVE ALLOWING THE BALL STUD TO SEPARATE UNDER IMPACT LOAD. THE SUBJECT BALL JOINTS WERE SOLD AS FOUR PART NUMBERS, D10945, D10946, G10945, AND G10946. THE AFFECTED CONTROL ARMS, D10945 AND D10946, ARE STAMPED WITH THE FOLLOWING DATES ON THE BALL JOINTS: 134308, 135708, 100109, 102709, 104109, 105509, 107609, 108909, 110309, 113209, AND 116609. THE G10945 AND G10946 ARE THE SAME PART AS THE D10945 AND D10946 RESPECTIVELY. THEY ARE LABELED DIFFERENTLY DEPENDING ON THE AFTERMARKET CUSTOMER.
- Consequence: SEPARATION OF THE BALL STUD FROM THE SOCKET OF THE BALL JOINT HOUSING WOULD ALLOW THE CONTROL ARM TO COLLAPSE AND THE WHEEL TO FOLD IN CAUSING LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A CRASH.
- Remedy: QUALIS AUTOMOTIVE WILL REPLACE THE BALL JOINTS FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 9, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT QUALIS AUTOMOTIVE AT 1-800-493-4128.

I got this car as a credit builder. Now that my credit is much better, I'm considering a newer vehicle. However, I'm not going to trade my Stratus. I really like this car and I'm going to keep it.
-
My husband and I purchased this car about a month ago. We were searching for a vehicle that could comfortably accommodate our 1-year-old's car seat as well as my 6'1 frame. We found just what we were looking for! This car is fantastic. My husband loves how sporty it looks, despite being a mid-size 4-door. The compartments are great, and the car gets excellent gas mileage. The interior is roomy and overall very nice. We couldn't ask for a better car!
-
I really like this car! While I wouldn't say I'm head over heels in love with it, I do have very high expectations, being a Lexus/BMW girl. Overall, it's been a great car and I've never had any major problems with it. The only thing that bothered me was that the airbags didn't deploy when I got into an accident at 45 mph, but I'm not sure what speed they're supposed to deploy at. Additionally, I've noticed that every time I hit the brakes hard, the back seats open and everything from the trunk ends up in the cab. Despite these minor issues, it's a reliable car that gets me from point A to point B, so I can't really complain. I plan on keeping it for a long time!
-
I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your Stratus! It seems like the only thing you're missing is a bit more power. Is there anything else you'd like to share about your experience with the car?
-
I recently acquired this car from a good friend who takes great care of his vehicles. I was able to purchase it for a reasonable price of $550, as it had some damage on the driver's side doors from a previous incident. At the time of purchase, it had 193,211 miles on it, and now it has 197,500 miles. I have only performed basic maintenance on the car, such as changing the oil and spark plugs, and it is due for another oil change soon. While it may idle a bit roughly until it warms up and requires an oil pressure sensor, it still runs perfectly fine.

This car has been my son's trusty mode of transportation for the past 4 years. While it has required some maintenance to keep it running smoothly, we've been able to keep it on the road. We did have to replace the water pump and timing chain, which was a major issue, and the electric windows have needed some attention due to cheap wiring and switches. However, we've been fortunate enough to avoid any breakdowns that required towing. Overall, we've been a bit disappointed with the quality and reliability of some of the materials used in the car's construction.

The gas mileage of this car is not up to par, and it varies significantly from tank to tank. Additionally, the 4-cylinder engine is not powerful enough for the size of the car. I have found myself frequently needing to refuel. However, I am aware of concerns regarding the reliability of Dodge transmissions. Despite this, I remain confident in my ability to address any issues that may arise.

I've had this car for 8 months now and unfortunately, I have been disappointed. It was meant to replace my aging '91 Maxima, but I hate admitting that the 16-year-old car had a smoother, quieter, and more fuel-efficient engine, along with a quieter interior. I am very displeased with the fuel mileage for this car in the city, as it only gets around 17 mpg if you're lucky. However, on the highway, it jumps to near 30 mpg. I think Dodge really missed the transmission gear ratios here. Although the Stratus lacks a lot of refinement, it isn't a bad car. I expected to have a much better car after losing the Maxima, but instead, I ended up with one that is merely adequate transportation.

My wife and I purchased the Stratus with 34,000 miles on it in 11/07 after trading in a very unreliable Chrysler 300. Unfortunately, we have had some issues with the car and have had to replace the transmission at only 45,000 miles. It has been frustrating, but we are hopeful that the new transmission will last longer. Despite this setback, we appreciate the features and design of the Stratus and will consider Dodge vehicles in the future.

I purchased this car 8 months ago and at 43,000 miles, we require a crankshaft and crank seal replacement, which will cost $2,400. There is a possibility that the short block may also need to be replaced, which will add another $2,000. Despite being out of the 3yr/3,600 mile warranty, Chrysler refused to assist. As a long-time Dodge owner, I am disappointed with this experience and will be exploring other options in the future.
