Dodge Stratus problems

The Dodge Stratus is a mid-size car that was introduced by Dodge in December 1994 and was based on the 4-door sedan Chrysler JA platform. The Stratus, Plymouth Breeze, and Chrysler Cirrus were all on Car and Driver magazine's Ten Best list for 1996 and 1997. It received critical acclaim at launch, but ratings fell over time. An updated version of the Stratus was introduced for 2001, with the Cirrus being renamed as the Chrysler Sebring, and a coupé model was also added to the range. Production ended in early 2006 at the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant after building 1,308,123 Stratus and Sebrings since 2000.
The Dodge Avenger replaced the Stratus nameplate in early 2007 for the 2008 model year.
After the discontinuation of the Stratus sedan in 2006, the assembly line and tooling were sold to the Russian concern, GAZ, which manufactured 9,000 units of a very slightly modified Stratus from 2008 through 2010 called the Volga Siber.

To address these common issues, it is essential to perform regular maintenance and repairs on the Dodge Stratus. This includes regular fluid changes, replacing the fuel filter regularly, and keeping the fuel tank clean. Electrical issues should be addressed promptly by fixing wiring problems and replacing faulty parts. Regular maintenance and repairs are essential for keeping the suspension in good condition.

Are Dodge Stratus reliable?
So reliable car!
At least 2 times a year, for the last 5 years I had to repair it. Parts are difficult to find and original or replacement parts, last the same time. I used it every day and its nice to drive. Never failed while driving because any malfunction.
Why was the Dodge Stratus discontinued?
During this time, sales declined as its ratings by consumer and auto magazines fell among competing mid-size cars. At the same time sedan market had shifted with the larger Intrepid and later Charger achieving record sales.

Based on data from 27 vehicles, 1,554 fuel-ups and 346,004 miles of driving, the 2005 Dodge Stratus gets a combined Avg MPG of 22.70 with a 0.19 MPG margin of error.

- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-23
- Date Complaint: 2024-06-24
- VIN: 1B3EL46X93N
- Components: WHEELS
- Summary: The problem is not with the tire itself, but with the lug nuts holding the tire on the car. In the past year I have had at least six lug nuts fail. I have had a rash of flat tires, mostly related to nails. In attempting to remove the tires to put on the spare, the chrome caps on the nuts have come off. In the first incident, I was able to strip the cover off the internal nut by hand. In attempting to remove the internal nut, the softer metal was stripped. I was forced to drive on a flat tire home to try and remove the rest of the nut. I had to call a tow truck to haul my car into the shop where they had to cut off the nut. I can document this and three other occasions of the lug nuts being stripped when trying to remove a bad tire. I can document an occasion when the shop replaced two faulty nuts when repairing one of my tires. In the most recent occasion, I was able to remove the tire. However, when handling the lug nuts the chrome cap came off in my hand. I am able to strip these caps and nuts by hand using an "X" lug wrench, which I had to buy because the wrench that came with the vehicle twisted out of shape while trying to remove the lug nuts. The shop is aware of this problem, and they keep putting these defective lug nuts back on. At my age, it is inconceivable that I would be able to strip these caps and lug nugs by hand. I have the documents, I can get you pictures, but I am not a computer whiz and am currently having problems getting my printer to link up with my PC to download files to send. I will have a family member copy this information and email it to me so I can attempt to send it to you with your reply.

Since you got your Stratus in March of 2006, you have put about 20,000 miles on it and it has caused you no problems. It's a lot of fun to drive, but sometimes it feels like the transmission slips when you accelerate. When you bought your car, the dealership sold it to you telling you it had ABS. After about 6 months of driving it, you noticed it actually had no ABS. However, the car handles really nicely in the snow, which is surprising for a sports car!

Congratulations on your new car! It's amazing that you were able to purchase a 15 year old car for only $1500. Despite its high mileage, it's great to hear that it still runs smoothly and handles well. It sounds like you're taking good care of it by keeping up with maintenance and repairs. It's also impressive that the car gets good gas mileage, especially considering the brand's reputation for gas guzzling trucks. I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your car and I hope it lasts you through the winter without any major issues.

I've owned my Stratus ES for almost four years now and I absolutely love it. Despite having to replace the transmission at 115K, it has been extremely reliable. I drive at least 25K miles a year, traveling from MD to Cape Cod several times a year, as well as to clients as far as 150 miles per day. It's strong, great in the snow, and the Auto Shift is awesome. The interior is very spacious, with enough room for five people. Currently, I have 171K miles on it and it's still going strong.

I've been really enjoying this car. We bought it as a fixer for our credit and had a choice between this and a Dodge Neon - there's no comparison. As the primary driver, I find myself making excuses to do things just so I can drive it. It's a blast to drive and seems pretty sporty for a 4 cylinder.

I've had my car for over a year now. I bought it used with lots of mileage, so I thought I'd need a warranty. The bad news is that I wasted my money on that extended warranty. The good news is that this car is awesome! It's a great everyday driver and I love driving it. Unlike everyone else, I haven't experienced any high pitched noise.

I have spent over $3,000 in repairs on this vehicle during a three-year period. The head gasket and transmission have been replaced, and new transmission seals were recently installed after 40,000 miles. The mechanic explained that fluid buildup caused the seals to crack due to lack of air circulation. It is my opinion that this car is not worth the investment. I would not recommend it to anyone. Thank you for your attention.

I experienced multiple engine problems with my Dodge car, despite regular maintenance every 3K miles. Unfortunately, at around 90K miles, I had to replace the main gasket and was later informed that my engine was beyond repair. Additionally, I encountered some electrical issues with my windows and radio/CD player. Although I purchased the car with every upgrade, including the smoker's package for an extra $20 (even though I don't smoke), the car still looks great both inside and out. However, this is the second Dodge vehicle that has given me trouble, as I previously owned a Jeep. As a result, I have decided to do my homework and purchase a Toyota instead. Thank you for considering my experience when making your own purchasing decisions.

I am satisfied with the car overall, although I did experience an issue with the head gasket at 80K miles, despite regular maintenance. The major failure occurred after a coolant and oil change at the dealer. Unfortunately, it was not covered under a recall due to the mileage on the car. Despite the costly repair bills, I still appreciate the car's nice interior, which I believe is the best in its class.

The Chrysler made 2.4L engine had some issues in its first year, with head gaskets needing replacement every 20-30K miles. It is important to regularly check the oil to avoid engine damage. In 1999, head gaskets were scarce and finding a replacement engine was almost impossible. However, the dealer was able to replace the head gasket in just 8 hours and for $800. Recently, the engine had its second head gasket replaced after approximately 50K miles, and the dealer was very accommodating. Thank you!
