2002 Dodge Stratus problems
The Dodge Stratus is a mid-size car that was introduced by Dodge in December 1994 and was based on the 4-door sedan Chrysler JA platform. The Stratus, Plymouth Breeze, and Chrysler Cirrus were all on Car and Driver magazine's Ten Best list for 1996 and 1997. It received critical acclaim at launch, but ratings fell over time. An updated version of the Stratus was introduced for 2001, with the Cirrus being renamed as the Chrysler Sebring, and a coupé model was also added to the range. Production ended in early 2006 at the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant after building 1,308,123 Stratus and Sebrings since 2000.
The Dodge Avenger replaced the Stratus nameplate in early 2007 for the 2008 model year.
After the discontinuation of the Stratus sedan in 2006, the assembly line and tooling were sold to the Russian concern, GAZ, which manufactured 9,000 units of a very slightly modified Stratus from 2008 through 2010 called the Volga Siber.

Common 2002 Dodge Stratus problems
The Dodge Stratus, produced from 1995 to 2006, was a mid-size car known for its sleek design and comfortable ride. However, like many vehicles, it had its fair share of common issues. Here are some of the most common problems with the Dodge Stratus, based on complaints from owners of this car:
- Engine Problems: One common issue with the 2001-2006 Dodge Stratus is engine problems. This can include issues such as rough idling, misfiring, or a lack of power. These issues may be caused by faulty spark plugs, a malfunctioning mass air flow sensor, or a clogged air filter. Regular maintenance and tune-ups can help prevent these issues from occurring.
- Transmission Problems: Transmission problems can also be a concern with the 2001-2006 Dodge Stratus. Issues such as slipping, rough shifting, or failure to engage may indicate a problem with the transmission. In some cases, replacing the transmission fluid and filter may resolve the issue. However, if the issue persists, it may be necessary to repair or replace damaged transmission components.
- Fuel System Issues: Fuel system issues, such as difficulty starting or poor acceleration, can also be a problem with the 2001-2006 Dodge Stratus. Replacing the fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, or fuel injectors may be necessary to resolve these issues. Regularly maintaining the fuel system with proper fuel quality and fuel additives can help prevent issues from occurring.
- Electrical Problems: Electrical problems, such as issues with the alternator, battery, or wiring, can also occur with the 2001-2006 Dodge Stratus. Checking wiring and connections for damage or corrosion and replacing any damaged or worn electrical components can help prevent issues from occurring.
- Suspension Problems: Suspension problems can also be a concern with the 2001-2006 Dodge Stratus. This can include issues such as a bumpy ride, uneven tire wear, or noise when going over bumps. Worn or damaged suspension components such as struts or sway bar links may need to be replaced as needed. Regularly maintaining proper tire pressure and alignment can also help reduce stress on the suspension system.
- Oil Sludge Buildup: Oil sludge buildup and sludge-related engine failure is a design defect in Chrysler's 2.7L engine. This can result in engine failure, especially in the 2001-2002 Dodge Stratus models equipped with this engine.
- Dashboard Cracks: Dashboard cracks and breakage are common in the 2001-2007 Dodge Stratus. This can result in a dashboard that falls apart and breaks into pieces, with cracks that grow bigger and bigger with each passing month.
Regular maintenance and tune-ups, as well as addressing any issues as soon as they arise, can help prevent many of these common problems with the Dodge Stratus. However, if you are experiencing any of these issues, it may be necessary to seek professional help to diagnose and repair the problem.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share that I recently purchased this car and I'm really enjoying it so far. I have noticed that the blind spots are a bit more challenging than what I'm used to, but it's not too bad. Other than that, I don't have any complaints yet.

I bought my 2002 Stratus R/T Coupe in October 2001 because I absolutely loved its looks, performance, and value compared to some competing models. I've had it for almost a year now and I must say, I have no real complaints about it. The 3.0L V6 is a great performer, although I think Dodge could have upped the horsepower slightly for the R/T model. I could get a plain SE Coupe with the same engine if I wanted, but I wanted the R/T badge, which has always been on the top performance vehicles at Dodge. Whenever I drive the car, I get tons of looks and great comments from other people. I'm so happy with my decision to purchase this car!

Embarrassed a Mustang, when he caught up I was surprised to see the GT on the rear. I have gotten 30 MPG on a 75 MPH trip and regularly get over 25 even with a kayak and/or bike on top. Passengers have even commented on the comfort. While it may not be the best at any one thing, it offers the best combination of features, comfort, and performance. With 50,000 miles, there are no squeaks, rattles, or any other problems.

In one word, this car is exceptional. When I was purchasing my new Stratus, I decided on the ES package. I opted for cloth seats instead of leather, but made up for it with a power moon roof, CD changer, and chrome rims. Besides its sleek yet sporty looks, this car makes you feel like you're floating when cruising down a country road with the moon roof open and windows down. But when you punch the gas to the floor, hang on tight! The 200 HP engine races from 50 to 100 in what seems like just a few seconds. All in all, the exceptional handling, supreme power, sleek yet sporty looks, and the exceptional sound system make this car the greatest I've ever owned.

I love this car! When my fiance's Ram 1500 had to go into the shop, I was given a Stratus as a loaner. I didn't expect to like it so much, since I thought cars wouldn't have enough room for my two kids, but this one did. I went back the next week to learn more about it, and ended up leaving with a 2002 black SXT with a sunroof. It's an excellent, fast, and cute car!

I bought the car because I loved the look, and it seemed great during the test drive. However, it has had some issues since I bought it. The steering wheel mysteriously locks up, then releases itself, and the brakes and rotors have been changed many times by different people, so the constant squeaking and grinding I know has to be a problem with the car. Additionally, the dashboard rattles, the road noise is horrible, and the windshield wipers are not functioning properly. Unfortunately, the transmission is also failing. There's so much more to say, but I'll just leave it as a cautionary tale. I would not recommend buying this car to anyone!

For the most part, I have never had any problems with this car. However, I did not particularly enjoy the ride and handling, especially for a sport coupe. It is fair to say that this car could be improved in terms of handling.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my Stratus rt that I bought new in 02. While it has required some maintenance over the years, I've found that keeping up with regular repairs has kept it running smoothly. Recently, I had a third radiator put in and have gone through a few batteries, starters, and an alternator. I've also noticed that the brake rotors tend to warp after about 7k miles and it uses a quart of oil a week. Unfortunately, the egr valve is now shot. Overall, while it has been a bit of a challenge, I've learned a lot about car maintenance and appreciate the time I've spent with my Stratus rt. Thanks for listening!

This is my first new car. It's so much fun to drive and the speakers sound great. It's a fun and easy car to drive!

I took a bit of a risk when I purchased this car. My brother happens to work for Chrysler, so I wanted to support him. Unfortunately, I had to replace the brakes frequently and encountered some major repairs around the 70K mark, which cost me $2500. Fortunately, I had a 7-year, 100K drivetrain warranty. However, this year, I made a mistake and spent $2K on an overheated engine, only for it to blow up about two months later. I then realized that the transmission might be next, so I decided to junk the car. In hindsight, I should have bought a Toyota, which would still be running and worth some money. If you're considering buying a used car, I would advise against it unless you're feeling particularly daring!
