1994 Dodge Intrepid problems
The Dodge Intrepid is a full-sized front-wheel drive four-door sedan that was produced by Dodge for the 1993 to 2004 model years. It is related to the Chrysler 300M, Chrysler Concorde, Chrysler LHS, Chrysler New Yorker, and Eagle Vision which were all built on Chrysler's new "cab forward" LH platform.
The Intrepid was sold in Canada as the Chrysler Intrepid. In the United States, it replaced the Dodge Monaco as Dodge's largest passenger car. With Dodge's introduction to Mexico during that time, it was badged as a Dodge, replacing the Dynasty which had been sold there under the Chrysler brand.
Background
The Intrepid's design goes back to 1986, when designer Kevin Verduyn completed the initial exterior design of a new aerodynamic concept sedan called Navajo. The design never passed the clay model stage. It was also at this time that the Chrysler Corporation purchased bankrupt Italian sports car manufacturer Lamborghini. The Navajo's exterior design was reworked and became the Lamborghini Portofino, released as a concept at the 1987 Frankfurt Auto Show. The Portofino was heralded as a design triumph, setting in motion Chrysler's decision to produce a production sedan with the Portofino's revolutionary exterior design, called "cab forward". The cab forward design was characterized by the long, low slung windshield, and relatively short overhangs. The wheels were effectively pushed to the corners of the car, creating a much larger passenger cabin than the contemporaries of the time.
Design of the chassis began in the late 1980s, after Chrysler had bought American Motors Corporation (AMC) in 1987. During this time, Chrysler began designing the replacement for the then-new Dodge Dynasty, which was a mid-size car. Initial proposals bore resemblance to the Dynasty, but this design approach was scrapped entirely in 1988 by François Castaing, the former AMC Vice President of product engineering and development. As AMC was purchased by Chrysler, Castaing became new Vice President for Vehicle Engineering for the new company. The acquiring automaker was in desperate need of replicating the AMC and Renault corporate culture where work was conducted in an atmosphere "of constant change". Castaing organized Chrysler's departments into AMC-style cross-function teams, as well as incorporated the use of simultaneous engineering. Moreover, the new vehicle's design, under Castaing's leadership, began with the Eagle Premier platform.
The Premier's longitudinal engine mounting layout was inherited, as was the front suspension geometry, and parts of the braking system. The chassis itself became a flexible architecture capable of supporting front or rear-wheel drive (designated "LH" and "LX" respectively). The chassis design was continually refined throughout the following years, as it underpinned more Chrysler prototypes: the 1989 Chrysler Millennium and 1990 Eagle Optima. The transmission was inspired by the Premier's Audi and ZF automatics. Borrowing heavily from Chrysler's A604 (41TE) "Ultradrive" transversely mounted automatic, it became the A606 (also known as 42LE).The initial standard 3.3 L pushrod V6 engine was joined in 1990 with a 3.5 L SOHC engine with four valves per cylinder. For the second generation Intrepid R/T the block was recast in aluminum as part of a comprehensive upgrade.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-03-15
- VIN: 1B3ED46F8RF
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND I STARTED SMELLING GAS. THE FUEL RAIL ON TOP OF THE ENGINE STARTED LEAKING BY THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT INJECTOR. THERE WAS A RECALL ISSUED FOR THIS VEHICLE FOR THE SAME ISSUE THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO CORRECT IT AND THE RECALL WORK WAS DONE ACCORDING TO THE MANUFACTURER. YEARS LATER IT STARTED LEAKING AGAIN. APPARENTLY THE RECALL KIT DOES NOT FIX THE ISSUE, EVENTUALLY THE FUEL RAIL ON TOP OF THE ENGINE WILL EVENTUALLY START LEAKING AGAIN WHICH MAY RESULT IN AN ENGINE FIRE IF NOT FIXED. I HAD TO TAKE THE CAR TO A SHOP AND AM STILL WAITING FOR A REPAIR KIT FROM CHRYSLER.

THEY TOLD ME TO TRY AND CONTACT THE LOCAL BBB, LOCAL ATTORNEY GENERALS OFFICE AND THE OFFICE OF CONSUMER AFFAIRS. THE ATTORNEY GENERAL TOLD ME TO CONTACT YOU. I BOUGHT A USED 1995 DODGE INTREPID IN 1998. IN 1999 I HAD TO PUT A REBUILT TRANSMISSION INTO IT. THAT TRANNY WAS STILL GOING STRONG WHEN I SOLD THE CAR IN 2004. I LIKED THE CAR SO MUCH THAT I BOUGHT ANOTHER USED ONE FROM A FRIEND. SHE PURCHASED A 1994 INTREPID BRAND NEW. IN 1998 THE TRANNY WENT OUT IN HER CAR. THE CAR ONLY HAD 9834 MILES ON IT AT THAT TIME. SHE PUT IN A REBUILT. THE CAR WAS IMPECCABLY KEPT UP SO I KNEW IT WAS A GOOD BUY TO PURCHASE IT FROM HER. SO I DID IN 2004. THE TRANNY WENT OUT RECENTLY. I COULD NOT AFFORD A CAR PAYMENT SO I OPTED TO PUT IN YET ANOTHER REBUILT TRANSMISSION. MY PROBLEM IS THAT WITH MY FIRST CAR, THE NEW FACTORY TRANSMISSION THAT CAM WITH THE NEW CAR LASTED ONLY 4 YEARS. 'THE REBUILT LASTED AT LEAST 5 YEARS. WITH THE 2ND CAR, THE NEW TRANNY THAT CAME WITH THE NEW CAR ONLY LASTED 4 YEARS AND THE FIRST REBUILT LASTED 7 YEARS. HOW IS IT THAT A 10 YEAR OLD CAR WITH ONLY 76,000 MILES ON IT HAS TO HAVE 3 TRANSMISSIONS? THIS IN ON AVERAGE, ONLY 3.3 YEARS PER TRANNY. I FEEL I SHOULD GET SOME COMPENSATION FOR THE 2 TRANSMISSIONS THAT I INVESTED IN OWNING THESE VEHICLES. IS THERE ANY RECOURSE THAT I CAN TAKE TO HELP RECOVER SOME OF MY EXPENSES OR AM I OUT OF GAS? THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. KAREN MITOK. *JB *NM

Off to a bad start with transmission replacments. We love the car. 30mpg on hwy. 207,000 currently. We now have this car dealer serviced. It's paid for;has good trans. now, new steering rack.Headlight design dreadful-replaced with newly designed ($$$). Maintain this car like you should any car and you WILL get 250000+ miles out of it.NOTE: Mopar parts are best for this car. Go the cheap route and you'll regret it - but there is nothing wrong with that. Dealer knows the car intimately (gave us some free svc at 200K.

Our Intrepid has generally been reliable and fun. It's pretty roomy. Living in the far north, it has done well so far. Although, I do wish its electronics were more reliable and its headlights were proper.

Your '94 Dodge Intrepid sounds like a great car! It's comfortable, fun to drive, and has impressive handling on the road. Even with 164,000 miles, it still runs well, which is a testament to its quality. I appreciate your recommendation for a reliable car that can handle snowy conditions. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with the Intrepid!

This vehicle has a recurring issue with the air conditioning unit. It is unclear if this is a common problem for this make and model.

I drove the car for under 4000 miles and unfortunately the transmission failed after only 2600 miles. Luckily, it was covered under warranty. Additionally, the air conditioner had issues every year for 4 years, which was documented by the dealer themselves. Again, lucky for us, it was covered under warranty. Due to the extended warranty, the issue was finally fixed, although the dealer admitted they still weren't sure how. The paint has been chipping since day 1. Although my wife liked the way it looked and we bought it, I now realize it was one of the worst mistakes I ever made. I still can't figure out why I listened to her.

The car is great, but unfortunately, the transmission failed and has not been functioning properly since.

This car has great performance for a large car. The handling is crisp and steady, and it's just fun to drive. While the fuel economy is average, it could be better. Additionally, the sleek body styling adds to the overall appeal of the car.

I love my intrepid, which I have had since new. Although it has had some issues, it has been a loyal companion. Unfortunately, it has not been as reliable or well-built as I had hoped. It has required multiple repairs, including four stereos, three transmissions, and three sets of front suspension. The expensive front headlights break in their mounts every year, and the A/C has quit completely. The leather seats are worn through, and the ABS and traction control sensors are shot. The gas gauge is erratic, and the ignition switch and starter motor have needed replacement. The aluminum wheels corrode, and the body rattles. The windshield wipers don't wipe the glass, and the seals around the doors don't seal anything. Despite its issues, this car looks great. However, I would prefer a Toyota Corolla any day!

I purchased a new car from the dealer lot. Despite having issues with the air conditioner from the first day, I have taken it to different dealers every summer since, but unfortunately, no one has been able to identify the problem. I did experience some transmission problems after the first year, and at 45,000 miles, I was advised that I needed a new one. The starter also died in the third year, but I was able to fix it with after-market parts. Although I have had some issues with the car, I have always brought it in for service, and any additional problems that arose were promptly addressed. For instance, when I brought it in for a broken headlight, the hood release came back broken, and when I brought it in for brakes, the passenger window wouldn't go down. Despite the repeated issues with the air conditioner, I am confident that the low-fuel light issue will be resolved as well.
