1995 Dodge Intrepid problems
The Dodge Intrepid is a full-sized front-wheel drive four-door sedan that was produced by Dodge for the 1993 to 2004 model years. It is related to the Chrysler 300M, Chrysler Concorde, Chrysler LHS, Chrysler New Yorker, and Eagle Vision which were all built on Chrysler's new "cab forward" LH platform.
The Intrepid was sold in Canada as the Chrysler Intrepid. In the United States, it replaced the Dodge Monaco as Dodge's largest passenger car. With Dodge's introduction to Mexico during that time, it was badged as a Dodge, replacing the Dynasty which had been sold there under the Chrysler brand.
Background
The Intrepid's design goes back to 1986, when designer Kevin Verduyn completed the initial exterior design of a new aerodynamic concept sedan called Navajo. The design never passed the clay model stage. It was also at this time that the Chrysler Corporation purchased bankrupt Italian sports car manufacturer Lamborghini. The Navajo's exterior design was reworked and became the Lamborghini Portofino, released as a concept at the 1987 Frankfurt Auto Show. The Portofino was heralded as a design triumph, setting in motion Chrysler's decision to produce a production sedan with the Portofino's revolutionary exterior design, called "cab forward". The cab forward design was characterized by the long, low slung windshield, and relatively short overhangs. The wheels were effectively pushed to the corners of the car, creating a much larger passenger cabin than the contemporaries of the time.
Design of the chassis began in the late 1980s, after Chrysler had bought American Motors Corporation (AMC) in 1987. During this time, Chrysler began designing the replacement for the then-new Dodge Dynasty, which was a mid-size car. Initial proposals bore resemblance to the Dynasty, but this design approach was scrapped entirely in 1988 by François Castaing, the former AMC Vice President of product engineering and development. As AMC was purchased by Chrysler, Castaing became new Vice President for Vehicle Engineering for the new company. The acquiring automaker was in desperate need of replicating the AMC and Renault corporate culture where work was conducted in an atmosphere "of constant change". Castaing organized Chrysler's departments into AMC-style cross-function teams, as well as incorporated the use of simultaneous engineering. Moreover, the new vehicle's design, under Castaing's leadership, began with the Eagle Premier platform.
The Premier's longitudinal engine mounting layout was inherited, as was the front suspension geometry, and parts of the braking system. The chassis itself became a flexible architecture capable of supporting front or rear-wheel drive (designated "LH" and "LX" respectively). The chassis design was continually refined throughout the following years, as it underpinned more Chrysler prototypes: the 1989 Chrysler Millennium and 1990 Eagle Optima. The transmission was inspired by the Premier's Audi and ZF automatics. Borrowing heavily from Chrysler's A604 (41TE) "Ultradrive" transversely mounted automatic, it became the A606 (also known as 42LE).The initial standard 3.3 L pushrod V6 engine was joined in 1990 with a 3.5 L SOHC engine with four valves per cylinder. For the second generation Intrepid R/T the block was recast in aluminum as part of a comprehensive upgrade.

Common 1995 Dodge Intrepid problems
Based on the information from the provided sources, here are some common problems with the 1995 Dodge Intrepid based on complaints from owners:
- Engine Failures: The 2.7-liter V6 engine in the Dodge Intrepid was prone to failures due to oil sludge contamination, leading to issues like leaks, insufficient oil capacity, and water pump failures. This resulted in premature engine failure, especially when oil changes were missed or delayed.
- Transmission Issues: Complaints included problems with shifting gears, which could be linked to transmission failures. Owners reported issues with transmissions not shifting out of first gear, necessitating replacements.
- Suspension Problems: Lower control arm attaching brackets were reported to crack due to fatigue, leading to separation from the engine cradle. This issue could affect the vehicle's stability and handling.
- Cradle Bolts Falling Out: Owners reported instances where cradle bolts fell out, causing the cradle to shift and resulting in power steering and radiator hose issues. This problem was attributed to improper torquing during repairs.
These problems highlight significant issues faced by owners of the 1995 Dodge Intrepid, impacting the vehicle's performance, safety, and reliability. Addressing these issues promptly through proper maintenance and repairs is crucial to ensure the longevity and safety of the vehicle.

- VIN: 1B3HD56T1SF
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: DODGE TRANSMISSION ON INTREPIDS, CARAVANS, AND NEONS HAVE A HISTORY OF FAILING AND NEEDING TO BE REPLACED OR REBUILT. MY VEHICLE ONLY HAS 55800 MILES ON IT ALL ORIGINAL. EVEN THOUGH THE CAR IS 15 YEARS OLD IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN MAINTAINED SINCE IT WAS PURCHASED FROM THE DEALER BRAND NEW IN 1995. I BELIEVE THAT IF DODGE IS NOT HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THE PROBLEMS THEN SOMEONE CAN SERIOUSLY GET INJURED FROM THEM. WHETHER IT BE FROM THE TRANSMISSION FAILING ON THE HIGHWAY AND CAUSING ACCIDENTS OR SOMETHING BREAKING WHILE JUST DRIVING AND CAUSING SERIOUS INJURY. *TR
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EQUIPMENT PROBLEM

I HAVE RECENTLY HAD A FEW ISSUES WITH SOME OTHER THINGS THAT WERE RESOLVED BY REPLACING THE IGNITION SWITCH BUT IT DIDN'T SEEM TO FIX THIS ISSUE. I TOOK THE CAR TO A REPAIR SHOP AND HAD THE DIAGNOSTICS RAN ON IT BUT IT DIDN'T COME BACK WITH ANY CODES. I OFTEN DRIVE WITH MY WIFE AND KIDS IN THE CAR SO NOW I FEAR THAT THIS MAY CAUSE US TO GET IN A WRECK. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-11-02
- VIN: 1B3HD56F3SF
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: I HAVE A 1995 DODGE INTREPID. UNTIL 4 MONTHS AGO, IT NEVER HAD A PROBLEM, ONLY DID ROUTINE MAINTENANCE AND THAT WAS CONSTANTLY DONE. IT HAS A NEW TRANSMISSION AND RADIATOR (UNDER EXTENDED WARRANTY), AND NEW STARTER, ALTERNATOR, AND BATTERY. THE FUEL PUMP WAS REPLACED ABOUT 2-3 YEARS AGO. FOUR MONTHS AGO, THE CAR STARTED TO ACT UP. FIRST, I NOTICED A "BURNT OIL OR ANTI-FREEZE" SMELL. I TOOK IT TO MY MECHANIC, WHO I HAVE HAD FOR MORE THAN 15 YEARS. HE COULDN'T FIND ANY LEAKS OR PROBLEMS AND REMINDED ME THAT ALL THE HOSES AND ACCESSORIES WERE REPLACE A YEAR BEFORE. HE SAID THAT HE SAW NOTHING DRIPPING OR BUILDING UP ANYWHERE. A WEEK LATER, I WOULD DRIVE IT SOMEWHERE, GET OUT AND DO WHATEVER IT WAS I NEEDED TO DO, GO BACK AND IT WOULDN'T START. EVERYTHING SOUNDS NORMAL, LIKE IT WANTS TO START, BUT DOESN'T. IF I WAIT 30-90 MINUTES AND TRY AGAIN, IT WILL START RIGHT UP AND A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD COME ON, BUT GO BACK OFF WITHIN A FEW MINUTES. A MONTH LATER THINGS GOT WORSE. IT STARTED TO DIE WHILE DRIVING. I WOULD BE IN THE CAR FOR LESS THAN 10 MILES AND ALL THE LIGHTS ON THE DASH WOULD "FLASH" AND THE CAR WOULD DIE. IT TAKES BETWEEN 2-3 HOURS BEFORE GETTING IT TO RESTART WHEN THIS HAPPENS. THIS PUTS ME IN SERIOUS DANGER AS THE CAR NO LONGER HAS POWER STEERING OR POWER BRAKES AND I LIVE ON A MOUNTAIN WITH NO WHERE I CAN GET OFF THE ROAD. I HAVE NEARLY BEEN HIT/KILLED WHEN THIS HAS HAPPENED. SINCE THEN, I CAN'T GO 1 MILE WITHOUT IT DYING OR NOT START AGAIN. AS A MATTER-OF-FACT, IF I LEAVE IT IDLING IN MY DRIVEWAY, IT WILL DIE WITH 2-4 MINUTES. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO MY SHOP 4 TIMES AND 2 OTHER ONES TRYING TO FIND OUT WHAT IS WRONG. THEY ALL SAY THAT SINCE THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT ONLY FLASHES AND THEN GOES OFF, THE COMPUTER CAN'T CATCH THE PROBLEM. SOMETIMES THEY THINK IT IS THE FUEL PUMP OR FUEL LINES; SOMETIMES THEY THINK IT IS ELECTRICAL; MOST OF THE TIME THEY JUST HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IS WRONG! *TR

STEERING,SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2008-05-09
- Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION
- Summary: FACTORY STRUTS(SUSPENSION) ARE INADEQUATE TO SUPPORT THE WEIGHT OF THE VEHICLE. MY STRUT MOUNT/PLATE &BOLTS BROKE AT 55 MILE PER HOUR & THE STRUT WENT THROUGH THE STRUT HOUSING/PLATE. THE STEERING/SUSPENSION SYSTEM IS COMPLETELY AFFECTED WHEN THE STRUTS BEGIN TO FAIL ON ALL VEHICLES. WHEN STRUTS FAIL SPRINGS ALSO FAIL CAUSING EVEN MORE STRESS ON THE OTHER STEERING/SUSPENSION PARTS(ALL BUSHINGS, TIE RODS. CONTROL ARMS, BALL JOINTS, CV JOINTS, TRANSAXLE, SWAY BAR. I HOPE IM MAKING SENSE, THIS NEEDS SERIOUS EXAMINATION AS CLUNK/ BUMP NOISES EVERY INTREPID ARE BAD STRUTS OR BAD STRUT MOUNT/BOLTS WHICH IMMEDIATELY INDICATE YOUR SUSPENSION/STEERING SYSTEM IS BEING BANGED UP. THE INNER TIE ROD BOLTS IN STEERING RACK BACK OUT OR TRY TO DUE TO TORN BUSHINGS IN THE INNER TIE RODS AT THE STEERING RACK CENTER. THESE BUSHINGS TEAR DUE TO WORN STRUTS THAT PUT STRESS ON TIE RODS SWAY BAR& STEERING RACK MOUNT BUSHINGS BOTH COMPRESS WITH THE EXTRA STRESS OF FAILING STRUTS. STEERING RACK SHIFTS DUE TO BAD INNER TIE ROD BUSHINGS CAUSING PLAY IN YOUR TIE RODS AND THE STEERING RACK MOUNT BUSHINGS NOW COMPRESSED CAUSE THE RACK TO SHIFT ALSO. SAME WITH SWAY BAR BUSHINGS&ANY OTHER SUSPENSION PARTS AND STEERING WHEN THIS HAPPENS SUCH AS INNER TIE RODS, OUTER TIE RODS, CV JOINTS, TRANSAXLE, BALL JOINTS,ALL BUSHINGS,LINKAGES,MOUNTS,CRADLE CAR WAS BUILT DEFECTIVELY AS THE WEIGHT OF THE VEHICLE IS TOO MUCH FORCE FOR THE STRUTS THAT COME FACTORY INSTALLED. THERE NEEDS TO BE AN IMMEDIATE CALL BACK ON THE STRUTS WITH A SERVICE ORDER TO EXAMINE AND REPAIR TORN OR COMPRESSED BUSHINGS IN THE INNER TIE RODS/STEERING RACK MOUNTING/SWAY BAR/BALL JOINT/CONTROL ARM/OUTER TIE ROD/ALONG WITH ANY DAMAGE TO THE CV JOINT&TRANSAXLES DUE TO THE DESIGN DEFECT USING INADEQUATE STRUTS FOR THE VEHICLES WEIGHT! THIS MAY SEEM LIKE AN EXTREME REQUEST BUT SINCE THEY WERE NEGLIGENT TO NEVER REPORT THE INADEQUACY OF THE STRUTS VS DESIGN IN ALL THE COMPLAINTS ON STEERING/SUSPENSION A RECALL IS IN ORDER. *TR

I've been driving this car for over 8 years and I still love it. The styling is beautiful and it hasn't aged a day. It's incredibly roomy and comfortable, making it a joy to drive. While we did have some issues with the transmission, AC, and engine between 38,000 and 60,000 miles, it has been extremely reliable since then. It's a blast to drive on the highway and cruises smoothly at 70-75 mph.

When my father passed away, I inherited his Dodge. Although I never really liked Dodges, this one completely changed my mind. The power it had was almost intimidating, accelerating very quickly. The comfort it provided was unparalleled. I remember taking it on a 3000 mile trip from Utah to Virginia to pick up my grandsons. The cost of the trip was less than what my daughter paid for her minivan just to get there. I even found myself going 120 mph at times without even realizing it, as the car was just that smooth. I still own it and have absolutely no intention of ever parting with it.
-
I love this car! It's awesome. It handles really well and goes so fast!
-
Hi there! Thank you for sharing your experience with us. It sounds like you've had some trouble with the transmission, but overall you think it's a good car. The 3.5 engine gets about 16MPG in the city and 27 on the highway, which is pretty good. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts!

-A/C went out and was refilled with refrigerant, but unfortunately it leaked out. The only shop willing to look at it was the dealer, who wanted $50 just to pull it in. Unfortunately, I still don't have A/C.-The brake drums, rotors, and shoes were replaced at 80,000 miles.-The starter was replaced at about 90,000 miles for $250 with labor.-Other Intrepid owners warned me about the transmission, but mine has been running smoothly with 91,600 miles to date.-Although the front end is starting to sound a bit sloppy, it's still riding fine.-I had an alignment at 85,000 miles.Misc: There is some chipping paint, and the black plastic pieces on either side of the rear window are cracking and fading. The hood doesn't stay up, and the trunk relay sticks sometimes and has to be tapped to get the trunk lid to shut again.

With 150,000 miles on the clock, my car has had its fair share of issues. Despite some problems with the transmission and tie rods, it has proven to be a reliable and spacious vehicle. Although there is currently a fuel leak and the transmission is slipping again, I am confident in my ability to keep it running until it's time to retire it. Overall, I have a love-hate relationship with this car, but I am proud to have kept it on the road for so long.

The vehicle performs well with ample power. However, there have been persistent issues with the transmission, air conditioning, steering assembly, and stereo/CD player.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it used with 46,000 miles and was hoping to reach 100,000 miles with average maintenance repairs. Unfortunately, I've had a few surprises along the way. The first 1000 miles were great, but then I had a couple of transmission problems at 48,000 miles. After that, I had a busted tie rod, followed by a shock housing problem. I also had issues with the air conditioning, heating/blower, and now the wiper motor is broken, all around 75,000 miles. The water pump is now going to be the next thing I need to fix. I've gone through enough belts to wrap around a city block! I'm now looking for a reliable Pontiac. Thanks for listening!

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with the car I purchased from my dad. Unfortunately, we've had some issues with the water pump and air conditioning from the beginning. Over the past nine years, we've had to replace the water pump five times and the timing belt twice. Recently, we've noticed some water leaking into the head gasket and the sway bar needs to be replaced. It's been a bit of a bumpy ride, but we're still grateful for the time we've had with the car.

I bought this car from my Aunt and Uncle when it had about 90,000 miles on it. They always kept up with the maintenance and had no problems. However, after 3 years of owning it, I had to replace the struts (which they had already done), brakes, rotors, tie rods, water pump, hood hydraulics, serpentine belt 3 times and the tensioner pulley. Additionally, the AC was not working properly and the vents up by my windshield would blow out hot air all the time. It was uncomfortable to drive around in the heat, but I couldn't afford to fix it right away. Eventually, I had to spend $750 to get it fixed.
