1996 Dodge Intrepid problems

The Dodge Intrepid is a full-sized front-wheel drive four-door sedan that was produced by Dodge for the 1993 to 2004 model years. It is related to the Chrysler 300M, Chrysler Concorde, Chrysler LHS, Chrysler New Yorker, and Eagle Vision which were all built on Chrysler's new "cab forward" LH platform.

The Intrepid was sold in Canada as the Chrysler Intrepid. In the United States, it replaced the Dodge Monaco as Dodge's largest passenger car. With Dodge's introduction to Mexico during that time, it was badged as a Dodge, replacing the Dynasty which had been sold there under the Chrysler brand.

Background

The Intrepid's design goes back to 1986, when designer Kevin Verduyn completed the initial exterior design of a new aerodynamic concept sedan called Navajo. The design never passed the clay model stage. It was also at this time that the Chrysler Corporation purchased bankrupt Italian sports car manufacturer Lamborghini. The Navajo's exterior design was reworked and became the Lamborghini Portofino, released as a concept at the 1987 Frankfurt Auto Show. The Portofino was heralded as a design triumph, setting in motion Chrysler's decision to produce a production sedan with the Portofino's revolutionary exterior design, called "cab forward". The cab forward design was characterized by the long, low slung windshield, and relatively short overhangs. The wheels were effectively pushed to the corners of the car, creating a much larger passenger cabin than the contemporaries of the time.

Design of the chassis began in the late 1980s, after Chrysler had bought American Motors Corporation (AMC) in 1987. During this time, Chrysler began designing the replacement for the then-new Dodge Dynasty, which was a mid-size car. Initial proposals bore resemblance to the Dynasty, but this design approach was scrapped entirely in 1988 by François Castaing, the former AMC Vice President of product engineering and development. As AMC was purchased by Chrysler, Castaing became new Vice President for Vehicle Engineering for the new company. The acquiring automaker was in desperate need of replicating the AMC and Renault corporate culture where work was conducted in an atmosphere "of constant change". Castaing organized Chrysler's departments into AMC-style cross-function teams, as well as incorporated the use of simultaneous engineering. Moreover, the new vehicle's design, under Castaing's leadership, began with the Eagle Premier platform.

The Premier's longitudinal engine mounting layout was inherited, as was the front suspension geometry, and parts of the braking system. The chassis itself became a flexible architecture capable of supporting front or rear-wheel drive (designated "LH" and "LX" respectively). The chassis design was continually refined throughout the following years, as it underpinned more Chrysler prototypes: the 1989 Chrysler Millennium and 1990 Eagle Optima. The transmission was inspired by the Premier's Audi and ZF automatics. Borrowing heavily from Chrysler's A604 (41TE) "Ultradrive" transversely mounted automatic, it became the A606 (also known as 42LE).The initial standard 3.3 L pushrod V6 engine was joined in 1990 with a 3.5 L SOHC engine with four valves per cylinder. For the second generation Intrepid R/T the block was recast in aluminum as part of a comprehensive upgrade.

Common 1996 Dodge Intrepid problems

The Dodge Intrepid, produced from 1993 to 2004, has been known for several significant issues that have contributed to its poor reputation and eventual discontinuation. These problems include:

  • Engine Problems: The 1999 Dodge Intrepid has been identified as the worst model year due to engine problems. The most commonly reported problem is oil sludge resulting in engine failure, with an average cost to fix of $4,300 and an average mileage of 87,000 mi.
  • 2.7L V6 Engine Flaws: The 2.7L V6 engine, used as the base engine for the second generation, was prone to failures due to oil sludge contamination. This issue often resulted in complete engine failure, even with regular maintenance. The 2.7L engine was known to last only 80,000 to 100,000 miles, even with proper maintenance. Another common issue was the water pump gasket failing and leaking coolant internally, diluting the oil and causing engine failure .

These issues, among others, contributed to the Dodge Intrepid's poor reputation and eventual discontinuation. While the car had its strengths, such as a modest price tag, big four-door sedan design, and praised handling, the problems mentioned above ultimately led to its downfall.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-08-27
  • VIN: 1B3HD46T9TF
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: AFTER PURCHASING CAR FROM AUCTION, WE TOOK FOR EMISSIONS TESTING IN ORDER TO PURCHASE A TAG. WE WERE TOLD THE TEST COULD NOT BE DONE BECAUSE THE COMPUTER HAD NOT FINISHED THE TESTS. WE WERE ADVISED HOW TO COMPLETE THE DRIVING REQUIREMENTS AND TO COME BACK AFTER THAT. AFTER SEVERAL TRIPS THE TESTS STILL SHOWED INCOMPLETE. NOW SIX YEARS LATER THE ODBII STILL WILL NOT COMPLETE AND ACTUALLY RESTARTS EVERY TIME THE CAR IS STARTED. AFTER LOTS OF RESEARCH WE DISCOVERED THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN WIDESPREAD AND A DEFECT THAT REQUIRES THE ECU TO BE FLASHED WITH UPDATED PROGRAM INFORMATION. THERE IS EVEN A TSB #181897 WHICH COVERED THIS. DEALERS ARE EITHER UNAWARE OF THIS PROBLEM OR WANT TO CHARGE CLOSE TO $100. WE BELIEVE THAT THEY SHOULD DO THIS SERVICE AT NO CHARGE SINCE IT IS S DEFECT THAT THEY ARE AWARE EXISTS. THERE ARE NO CODES BEING THROWN AND WE HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO TAG THE CAR FOR MANY YEARS. *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-05-01
  • VIN: 1B3HD46T7TF
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS
  • Summary: THE AIR BAG LIGHT STAYS ON CONSTANTLY WHICH AFFECTS THE ELECTRIC WINDOWS & THE HEATING/AC COMPONENT. WHEN THE AIR BAG LIGHT CAME ON THE WINDOWS & HEATER/AC STOPPED WORKING. ADDITIONALLY, THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKING MECHANISM IS DEFECTIVE BECAUSE IT DOES NOT LOCK THE STEERING WHEEL AT ALL WHEN THE IGNITION IS IN THE OFF POSITION. I HAD A 1993 DODGE INTREPID WITH THE SAME AIRBAG LIGHT PROBLEM DESCRIBED ABOVE, I WAS ABLE TO GET THE LIGHT TO GO OFF AT TIMES BY ADJUSTING THE STEERING WHEEL WHICH ALLOWED THE ELECTRIC WINDOWS AND HEATER/AC TO WORK UNTIL THE LIGHT WOULD COME BACK ON. THE DIFFERENCE IS I CANNOT GET THE AIRBAG LIGHT TO TURN OFF AT ALL ON THE 1996 MODEL, THE DIFFERENCE BEING BETWEEN THE TWO MODELS IS THAT THE 93 HAD THE GEAR SHIFTER ON THE FLOOR CONSOLE; WHILE 96 IS ON THE COLUMN. THE FACT THAT THE 93 AND 96 BOTH HAVE THE SAME AIRBAG LIGHT AFFECTING THE ELECTRIC WINDOWS & THE HEATER/AC IS NOT A COINCIDENCE. I'VE BEEN TOLD BY MECHANICS THAT ONE THING SHOULD AFFECT THE OTHER, BUT MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE SHOWS THAT TO BE UNTRUE. IN MY OPINION THERE IS A SAFETY ISSUE WITH EITHER THE SENSORS OR SOMETHING IN THE IGNITION SWITCH, OR POSSIBLY THE WIRING WITHIN THE STEERING COLUMN DUE TO POSSIBILITY OF MANUFACTURING ISSUES. THIS DOES POSE AS A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE THE WINDOWS WILL NOT ROLL DOWN AND THE HEATER/AC WILL NOT COOL/HEAT THE CAR AND THE DEFROSTER CANNOT CLEAR THE WINDOWS OF CONDENSATION; WHICH CREATES OBSTRUCTED VIEW. THE NONWORKING HEATER/AC SEVERELY RESTRICTS THE TIMES YOU CAN DRIVE THE CAR, UNLESS YOU WOULD LIKE TO RISK HEAT EXHAUSTION DURING SUMMER OR FROSTBITE DURING THE WINTER. *TR

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-02-01
  • VIN: 2B3HD46F2TH
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: I HAVE OWNED A 1996 DODGE INTREPID FOR 6 MONTHS NOW AND WHEN I BOUGHT THE CAR I WAS AWARE THAT THE STEERING WAS A LITTLE LOOSE, WHAT I DID NOT KNOW WAS THAT THE ENTIRE RACK AND PINION SYSTEM AS WELL AS MOST OF THE TIE RODS AROUND THEM WERE COMPLETELY SHOT. MY STEERING WHEEL GRINDS WHEN I TURN IT LEFT AND RIGHT NOW AND MY STEERING HAS A HORRIFIC DRIFT WHEN TURNING FROM EXTREME TO EXTREME. THE BUSHINGS ON THE RACK AND PINION (AS TOLD BY MY MECHANIC) ARE COMPLETELY GONE. THE BROKEN PIECES ARE RATTLING AND VIBRATING SO VIOLENTLY THAT THE SHIMMYING I FEEL ON MY CAR IS ACTUALLY CAUSED BY THE STEERING. WHEN I BRAKE AT HIGH SPEEDS (50MPH) THE STEERING PULLS TO EITHER AN EXTREME LEFT OR RIGHT. AFTER DOING RESEARCH, I FOUND OUT THAT I WASN'T THE ONLY ONE STRUGGLING WITH THESE SAME ISSUE. IT SEEMS LIKE EVERY OWNER OF A 1996 DODGE INTREPID IS EXPERIENCING THE EXACT SAME ISSUES. MY MECHANIC SAID TO ME THAT HE HAS NO GUARANTEE THAT MY STEERING WILL WORK RIGHT. DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD NOW I'M AFRAID I'LL LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. MY GIRLFRIEND MIGHT FREQUENTLY DRIVE THE VEHICLE BUT I AM AFRAID THAT THE STEERING MAY GO OUT WHEN SHE IS DRIVING IT. I SPOKE WITH MY MECHANIC AND I AM IN THE PROCESS OF GETTING THE DEFECTIVE PARTS REPLACED. I PLAN TO SAVE THE PARTS THAT ARE DEFECTIVE IN HOPES THAT I WILL GET SOME COMPENSATION FOR THEM. *TR

I KNOW I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS PROBLEM THERE ARE THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS LISTED ON THE INTERNET FOR THIS SAME PROBLEM BY OTHER DODGE INTREPID OWNERS THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD ALSO THE FACT THE WINDOWS DON'T WORK CAN CAUSE ENTRAPMENT IN THE VEHICLE

STEERING,SUSPENSION,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,STRUCTURE,TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-10-07
  • VIN: 2B3HD56FXTH
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,STRUCTURE,TIRES
  • Summary: REPEATED OVERHEATING PROBLEMS RESULTED IN REPLACING MY RADIATOR TWO TIMES, THERMOSTAT THREE TIMES AND THERMOSTAT W/ BREATHER HOUSING TWO TIMES. COOLING SYSTEM INCLUDES EXTERNAL METAL PIPES WHICH HELP CIRCULATE COOLANT TO HEATER. THE PIPES ARE HIDDEN FROM CLEAR VIEW AND WHEN MINE SPRUNG LEAKS DUE TO THEIR PLACEMENT THE LEAKS WERE DIAGNOSED AS BEING BLOWN HEAD/HEAD GASKET BY THREE SEPARATE SHOPS. REPLACEMENT OF PIPES SOLVED OVERHEATING. MOISTURE GETS TRAPPED IN AND AROUND THE FRAME AND SUBFRAME AREAS WHERE THE MOTOR AND TRANSMISSION MOUNTS ARE LOCATED AND ALLOWS FOR UNNECESSARY PREMATURE DETERIORATION OF ALL THE MOUNTS, BUSHINGS, MAIN FRAME AND SUBFRAME. THIS HIDDEN CONDITION HAS RESULTED IN ALL MOUNTS NEEDING REPLACEMENT, TRANSMISSION DROPPING, FRONT INNER&OUTER TIE RODS AND BUSHINGS GOING OUT, RACK N PINION PROBLEMS AND THE SUBFRAME COLLAPSING. DOCUMENTED RECORDS SHOW THAT FROM 2004 THROUGH 2008 ON AVERAGE I DROVE 7000 MILES A YEAR. IN THAT 28000 MILES I REPLACED ALL MOTOR/TRANSMISSION MOUNTS, ALL 4 INNER&OUTER TIE ROD BUSHINGS/ENDS TWICE, RADIATOR TWICE, THERMOSTAT HOUSING TWICE, COOLANT PIPES ONCE AND HAVE GONE THROUGH TWO SETS OF TIRES. I AM REPLACING SUBFRAME, TRANSMISSION MOUNTS AND FRONT AXLE AGAIN. I CONTINUE FIXING THE CAR BECAUSE I CANNOT AFFORD TO REPLACE IT BUT I AM GETTING VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THE STEERING, AXLE OR BRAKES GIVING OUT WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY OR IN HEAVIER TRAFFIC. SO CONCERNED MY DOCUMENTATION HAS BEEN GIVEN TO FAMILY MEMBERS IN CASE OF FATALITY RESULTING FROM THE DEFECTS MENTIONED. *TR

  • VIN: 1B3HD46T2TF
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: ON JUNE 1ST, 2007, I, SHARON S. HATCHER, WENT TO TUFFY AUTO SERVICE CENTER TO GET MY CAR INSPECTED. THEY PROCEEDED TO INSPECT MY VEHICLE WHEN THEY HOOKED IT UP TO THE COMPUTER TO PASS ONBOARD DIAGNOSTIC II [OBD II] LANGUAGE...MY VEHICLE WAS REJECTED BECAUSE THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE NEEDS TO BE REPROGRAMMED! WELL, I DROVE THIS CAR ALL DAY YESTERDAY AND LAST NIGHT AND I TOOK IT TO 2 OTHER PLACES AND THE SAME THING SHOWED UP LIKE AT TUFFY AUTO SERVICE CENTER!! I TOOK IT TO STEVE WHITE MOTORS [CHRYSLER, DODGE, AND JEEP DEALERSHIP] AND THEIR SERVICEMAN SAID TO DRIVE IT AROUND FOR 20-30 MILES AT A CONSTANT SPEED OF 45-55MPH. WELL, I DID THAT AND I TOOK AT BACK TO TUFFY'S AUTO SERVICE CENTER AND THE SAME BULLENTIN POPPED UP AGAIN AS LIKE AT THE OTHER PLACES. SO THE COMPLAIT THAT I AM FILING IS ON A 1996 DODGE INTREPID. I HAVE BEEN TO 3 DIFFERENT PLACES TO GET MY CAR INSPECTED AND AT ALL 3 PLACES ITS SHOWING THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE NEEDS TO BE FLASHED OR REPROGRAMMED. THE DODGE DEALERSHIP IS NOT WANTING TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. I HAVE THE TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLENTIN [TSB] REFERENCE NUMBER AS ALONG WITH PAPERWORK FROM THESE PLACES. I BELIEVE THIS TO BE A NEW RECALL ON MY VEHICLE THAT HASN'T BEEN RESEARCHED OR LOOKED INTO ON ALL MAKES OF DODGE INTREPID'S DURING 1996. I AM NOT PAYING FOR A RECALL THAT HAS TO DO WITH. *TR

  • Summary: I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE USED FROM A REPUTABLE DEALER. ALL REPAIRS ARE WELL DOCUMENTED. OVER THE LAST 2 YEARS THERE HAVE BEEN RECURRING PROBLEMS WITH OVERHEATING THAT NO ONE WAS ABLE TO DIAGNOSE. MY HUSBAND WENT OUT TO START THE CAR AFTER IT HAD BEEN SITTING FOR APPROXIMATELY 12 HOURS AND THE ENGINE BURST INTO FLAMES. THANK GOODNESS THERE WAS A SNOW BANK OR OUR HOUSE WOULD HAVE BEEN A LOSS AS WELL. THROUGH THE INTERNET I HAVE DISCOVERED A RECALL FOR SYMPTOMS THAT WE HAVE EXPERIENCED, WITHOUT REPAIR, BUT ARE LISTED IN RECALL INFORMATION. WE ARE GETTING THE RUN AROUND ABOUT HOW TO PURSUE REPAIRING THE VEHICLE UNDER THE RECALL PROVISIONS. *AK

Negative 1996 Dodge Intrepid car reviews

This full-size sedan is a joy to drive, with a responsive and powerful engine. It handles exceptionally well for its size and offers plenty of room for passengers. Additionally, the engine is both powerful and reliable.

I strongly advise against purchasing a Dodge vehicle. Despite my car being pre-owned and having less than 30,000 miles, I have had to replace the water pump twice since purchasing it in 1998. In addition, I have had to replace the brakes, ignition, computer, and other parts. The air conditioner began making noise last summer, but due to financial constraints, I was unable to repair it. Currently, the heater is making a strange noise, and the car rattles while the dash is warping near the airbag. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this car to anyone.

This car has great reliability and gets up to 30mpg on the highway with the 3.3 V6 engine. I'm 6'4

I bought this car because I had read good reviews about it, and for the price I paid, I got a lot of car. It is very fun to drive, with the 3.5L engine, there is plenty of juice in the pedal. The car is very roomy, and the styling is great. However, after a while, I started experiencing some issues with the car, such as poor transmission, front end issues, and expensive A/C evap coils that cost almost $1g to fix. It was quite frustrating, but I learned a lot from the experience.

I bought this car back in '96 with 64k miles on it for $9k. It has been a great ride, with good mileage for its size and plenty of room. I have had to make a few repairs along the way, including rebuilding the A/C for $1200, replacing the steering rack for $1000, and fixing the cylinder head gaskets and engine cradle bushings for $1200. I also had to replace the sway bars, struts, and tie rods for $1700 when it hit 145k miles. While the suspension and steering could use some improvement, overall the cost of ownership has been very reasonable at around $0.29 per mile. Despite its issues, it has been cheaper to own than a Camry and offers more space. I would definitely consider buying another used one.

Positive 1996 Dodge Intrepid car reviews

  1. Demond Ebert 2024-11-26

Overall, this is a really nice car. It looks great and gets off the line quickly. Plus, the interior is really roomy!

  2. Blaise Koepp 2024-10-14

Owned since January. I purchased this car as a surprise gift for my wife. We already had a Saab in good condition (which is also for sale for $2500 or best offer). This car is an excellent ride, quiet, and extremely comfortable. You must drive the vehicle to truly appreciate it. It is priced for a quick sale, but please note that it does need some repairs. If you are able to do the repairs yourself, the cost of parts will obviously be extremely reasonable. This is a great car and a must-see! Please email me for more information.

  3. Maximo Hilpert 2024-08-26

I bought the car used with 185K. I've had some minor problems, such as brakes, headlights, and axle issues, but nothing that would make me want to get rid of the car. The Intrepid is spacious and handles well. I've put 28K miles on the used engine and all I do is keep changing the oil. I would definitely recommend the Intrepid to anyone!

  4. Kieran Weissnat 2024-08-12

Overall, this sounds like a great car! I bought it with 60k miles on it and finally had to let it go after 280k miles. Unfortunately, the transmission finally went out, but that was the only mechanical problem I had with this car.

  5. Jackson Rolfson 2024-06-22

The original paint job wasn't great, but we'll take care of that by re-painting the hood, top, and hood of the car. Other than that, this car is very dependable and fun to drive.
