The Dodge Intrepid is a full-sized front-wheel drive four-door sedan that was produced by Dodge for the 1993 to 2004 model years. It is related to the Chrysler 300M, Chrysler Concorde, Chrysler LHS, Chrysler New Yorker, and Eagle Vision which were all built on Chrysler's new "cab forward" LH platform.
The Intrepid was sold in Canada as the Chrysler Intrepid. In the United States, it replaced the Dodge Monaco as Dodge's largest passenger car. With Dodge's introduction to Mexico during that time, it was badged as a Dodge, replacing the Dynasty which had been sold there under the Chrysler brand.
Background
The Intrepid's design goes back to 1986, when designer Kevin Verduyn completed the initial exterior design of a new aerodynamic concept sedan called Navajo. The design never passed the clay model stage. It was also at this time that the Chrysler Corporation purchased bankrupt Italian sports car manufacturer Lamborghini. The Navajo's exterior design was reworked and became the Lamborghini Portofino, released as a concept at the 1987 Frankfurt Auto Show. The Portofino was heralded as a design triumph, setting in motion Chrysler's decision to produce a production sedan with the Portofino's revolutionary exterior design, called "cab forward". The cab forward design was characterized by the long, low slung windshield, and relatively short overhangs. The wheels were effectively pushed to the corners of the car, creating a much larger passenger cabin than the contemporaries of the time.
Design of the chassis began in the late 1980s, after Chrysler had bought American Motors Corporation (AMC) in 1987. During this time, Chrysler began designing the replacement for the then-new Dodge Dynasty, which was a mid-size car. Initial proposals bore resemblance to the Dynasty, but this design approach was scrapped entirely in 1988 by François Castaing, the former AMC Vice President of product engineering and development. As AMC was purchased by Chrysler, Castaing became new Vice President for Vehicle Engineering for the new company. The acquiring automaker was in desperate need of replicating the AMC and Renault corporate culture where work was conducted in an atmosphere "of constant change". Castaing organized Chrysler's departments into AMC-style cross-function teams, as well as incorporated the use of simultaneous engineering. Moreover, the new vehicle's design, under Castaing's leadership, began with the Eagle Premier platform.
The Premier's longitudinal engine mounting layout was inherited, as was the front suspension geometry, and parts of the braking system. The chassis itself became a flexible architecture capable of supporting front or rear-wheel drive (designated "LH" and "LX" respectively). The chassis design was continually refined throughout the following years, as it underpinned more Chrysler prototypes: the 1989 Chrysler Millennium and 1990 Eagle Optima.The transmission was inspired by the Premier's Audi and ZF automatics. Borrowing heavily from Chrysler's A604 (41TE) "Ultradrive" transversely mounted automatic, it became the A606 (also known as 42LE).The initial standard 3.3 L pushrod V6 engine was joined in 1990 with a 3.5 L SOHC engine with four valves per cylinder. For the second generation Intrepid R/T the block was recast in aluminum as part of a comprehensive upgrade.

I HAD TO TAKE THE CAR TO A SHOP AND AM STILL WAITING FOR A REPAIR KIT FROM CHRYSLER.

OF COURSE A PART CAN FAIL ON A NOW 17 YEAR OLD VEHICLE, BUT IT SEEMS THAT THE ROUTINE FAILURE MODE AND EFFECT ANALYSIS OVERLOOKED THIS PART. A LESS ABLE DRIVER MIGHT HAVE LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND CRASHED. AS FAR AS I KNOW, THE EMERGENCY BRAKE HAS NEVER BEEN USED IN THE 17 YEAR LIFE OF THIS CAR.

WITH NO BRAKES AND FIRE AND SMOKE INTO THE CAR, THE DRIVER WAS FORCED TO JUMP OUT OF THE VEHICLE AND ROLL ONTO THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSTATE WITH THE CAR STILL GOING 30-40 MPH. THE DRIVER WAS IN EXTREME DANGER INSIDE THE CAR AND OBVIOUSLY LAYING ON THE INTERSTATE AS WELL. THE CAR ENDED UP IN THE DITCH WHILE COMPLETELY ENGULFED IN FLAMES. HE WAS ABLE TO GET ONTO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED TO PUT OUT THE FIRE. THEY DETERMINED THE FIRE STARTED INSIDE THE AREA OF THE HEATING CORE. THE FIRE WAS SO HOT THAT IT MELTED THE BOLTS WE WERE TOLD BY THE FIRE MARSHAL. THERE OBVIOUSLY WAS SOMETHING FAULTY WITH THE HEATER CORE TO GIVE THIS MUCH DAMAGE. THE DRIVER WAS TREATED AT THE ER FOR SMOKE INHALATION. THE CONTENTS IN THE CAR WERE EITHER BURNED, MELTED, OR HAVE SEVERE SMOKE DAMAGE. THE VEHICLE IS A COMPLETE LOSS OF COURSE. WE LOST MANY ITEMS OF VALUE INSIDE THE VEHICLE. WE WOULD LIKE TO BE REIMBURSED FOR THE CAR, THE DAMAGED OR DESTROYED CONTENTS AND ANY MEDICAL BILLS.

AFTER 18 MONTHS, THE ENGINE LIGHT REMAINED LIT ALL THE TIME. IT WOULD STALL IN TRAFFIC AND THE OIL LIGHT WOULD APPEAR. AT THIS POINT, AFTER READING THOUSANDS OF OTHERS COMPLAINTS ON THIS VEHICLE/ENGINE AND UNDERSTANDING ENGINE REPAIR COSTS WOULD ECLIPSE THE VALUE, I DECIDED THE VEHICLE WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 1996 Intrepid that I purchased back in the fall of 1995. I must say, it's been the best car I've ever owned! Although I've had a few problems with it, I'm proud to say that I now have 565,000 kilometers on the original engine. I use regular 5 30 weight oil with Power Up as an engine additive. Interestingly, my brother also bought a second-hand 1996 Intrepid identical to mine, and it had 185,000 km's. Now, it has over 400,000 km's! I must say, it's a super engine!!

I needed a larger car as my kids were getting too big for the back seat of Prizm. The Intrepid has fantastic legroom, drives well, is comfortable for trips and gets very good mileage (a real need) for a large car. I have had NO mechanical trouble, perform maintenance myself and have been pleased with the car. I am very happy with my purchase of this car.

The odometer crossed 50K as we were approaching home from a 2400 mile road trip. I deducted one point from the interior design for the lack of rear cup holders. The fuel economy also lost one point for being less than 30 mpg, at 28 mpg. However, apart from these minor issues, the car is magnificent! The comfort, performance, handling, and all convenience systems were flawless. It's amazing what a bit of deliberate care and maintenance can do to keep a good car running well. Since this car was new, I've replaced one power window motor, two hood shocks, and one water coolant manifold. I've been using Mobil-1 5W-30 Extended Performance oil and K&N oil filters with 5000 mile change intervals.

I bought my car less than a year ago with 20,000 miles on it. Since then, I've taken it to Vegas three times, LA numerous times, and my car is still going strong. I make sure to get an oil change every four months and a full tune-up every ten months. I've gone through two sets of tires, but my car now has 198,000 miles and is still running smoothly. Although the 2.7L engine could use a little boost, I still love it just the same. The cruise control is especially helpful going uphill, providing a great boost in RPMs. And when it comes to road curves, my car handles them like a pro, hugging the road and making me feel like I'm driving at Talladega Speedway!

I purchased my 02 Intrepid last year with 27,000 miles on it. Currently, it has 42,000 miles on it and the engine check light comes on occasionally, but turns off on its own. Even after a computer diagnosis, the problem could not be identified. My car has a sporty look with a spoiler and tinted windows, making it suitable for both families and car enthusiasts. It feels like a small airplane on the highway! However, the radio could be better and the front of the car is difficult to see when parking. The MPG could also be improved though...

Dodge has done a great job in creating cars that are both fun to drive and comfortable, and the Intrepid is no exception. However, it is important to note that there have been some reliability issues with Dodge cars, including the Intrepid. Personally, I have experienced problems with the air conditioner and transmission, but thankfully I have never broken down in a bad spot. It's worth considering that after the 100,000 mile mark, some issues may arise, as I have experienced myself. Ultimately, when deciding on the Intrepid, it's important to weigh the balance between comfort and quality.

I bought the car new with only 18 miles on it. It has been a great ride so far, but unfortunately, I experienced some issues around 75000 miles. The water pump went out and the water and antifreeze got mixed into the oil. I had it fixed for $1300. Later on, the oil light would come on at idle, and I had to have the oil light indicator sensor replaced. Additionally, a bad rattle developed, and I had to have the timing chain and guides replaced for $1500. While they were at it, they checked the oil pump, and it was okay. The oil light is coming on at idle again, but I still love driving it! Maybe I'll run it until it dies.

I have personally experienced several issues with the car I purchased, including problems with the steering, transmissions, radiator, head gasket, and brakes. These issues have occurred frequently, with the brakes needing replacement every 2-3 months. Despite the positive reputation of the brand, my experience with this particular car has been disappointing. It is my belief that Dodge should take responsibility for these issues and provide free repairs, particularly for safety concerns such as the steering. Additionally, the car emits loud clicking noises and feels unstable. Overall, my experience with this car has not been satisfactory.

We had to purchase a new engine for $3,000.00, and unfortunately, Chrysler or Dodge were unable to provide any assistance. Due to the newness of the vehicle, they were unable to release parts to any other mechanic. Although it is disappointing that such a new car experienced such a significant issue, we were able to have it fixed at the dealership. Despite some ongoing alignment issues, the car is running smoothly now. We also had to replace the fuel injection pump and address some mechanical problems. Additionally, the hubcaps had rusted through due to a lack of protective finish. We are currently in the market for a new car, and while we may take a loss due to these issues, we are confident that we will find a reliable vehicle that meets our needs.

I bought this car three years ago with 60,000 miles on it and full service records. It has a supremely roomy interior and we used to take several long trips comfortably. However, recently the engine has been causing some trouble. It has completely seized up and shut down in the middle of interstate driving and even while applying the brake in city driving. Despite regular and routine maintenance, I have had to replace most of the electrical system and half the replaceable components of the engine for more money than I care to admit. It's a shame because the car is so comfortable and a ton of fun to drive.
