Dodge Intrepid problems
The Dodge Intrepid is a full-sized front-wheel drive four-door sedan that was produced by Dodge for the 1993 to 2004 model years. It is related to the Chrysler 300M, Chrysler Concorde, Chrysler LHS, Chrysler New Yorker, and Eagle Vision which were all built on Chrysler's new "cab forward" LH platform.
The Intrepid was sold in Canada as the Chrysler Intrepid. In the United States, it replaced the Dodge Monaco as Dodge's largest passenger car. With Dodge's introduction to Mexico during that time, it was badged as a Dodge, replacing the Dynasty which had been sold there under the Chrysler brand.
Background
The Intrepid's design goes back to 1986, when designer Kevin Verduyn completed the initial exterior design of a new aerodynamic concept sedan called Navajo. The design never passed the clay model stage. It was also at this time that the Chrysler Corporation purchased bankrupt Italian sports car manufacturer Lamborghini. The Navajo's exterior design was reworked and became the Lamborghini Portofino, released as a concept at the 1987 Frankfurt Auto Show. The Portofino was heralded as a design triumph, setting in motion Chrysler's decision to produce a production sedan with the Portofino's revolutionary exterior design, called "cab forward". The cab forward design was characterized by the long, low slung windshield, and relatively short overhangs. The wheels were effectively pushed to the corners of the car, creating a much larger passenger cabin than the contemporaries of the time.
Design of the chassis began in the late 1980s, after Chrysler had bought American Motors Corporation (AMC) in 1987. During this time, Chrysler began designing the replacement for the then-new Dodge Dynasty, which was a mid-size car. Initial proposals bore resemblance to the Dynasty, but this design approach was scrapped entirely in 1988 by François Castaing, the former AMC Vice President of product engineering and development. As AMC was purchased by Chrysler, Castaing became new Vice President for Vehicle Engineering for the new company. The acquiring automaker was in desperate need of replicating the AMC and Renault corporate culture where work was conducted in an atmosphere "of constant change". Castaing organized Chrysler's departments into AMC-style cross-function teams, as well as incorporated the use of simultaneous engineering. Moreover, the new vehicle's design, under Castaing's leadership, began with the Eagle Premier platform.
The Premier's longitudinal engine mounting layout was inherited, as was the front suspension geometry, and parts of the braking system. The chassis itself became a flexible architecture capable of supporting front or rear-wheel drive (designated "LH" and "LX" respectively). The chassis design was continually refined throughout the following years, as it underpinned more Chrysler prototypes: the 1989 Chrysler Millennium and 1990 Eagle Optima.The transmission was inspired by the Premier's Audi and ZF automatics. Borrowing heavily from Chrysler's A604 (41TE) "Ultradrive" transversely mounted automatic, it became the A606 (also known as 42LE).The initial standard 3.3 L pushrod V6 engine was joined in 1990 with a 3.5 L SOHC engine with four valves per cylinder. For the second generation Intrepid R/T the block was recast in aluminum as part of a comprehensive upgrade.

APPARENTLY THE RECALL KIT DOES NOT FIX THE ISSUE, EVENTUALLY THE FUEL RAIL ON TOP OF THE ENGINE WILL EVENTUALLY START LEAKING AGAIN WHICH MAY RESULT IN AN ENGINE FIRE IF NOT FIXED. I HAD TO TAKE THE CAR TO A SHOP AND AM STILL WAITING FOR A REPAIR KIT FROM CHRYSLER.

OF COURSE A PART CAN FAIL ON A NOW 17 YEAR OLD VEHICLE, BUT IT SEEMS THAT THE ROUTINE FAILURE MODE AND EFFECT ANALYSIS OVERLOOKED THIS PART. A LESS ABLE DRIVER MIGHT HAVE LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND CRASHED. AS FAR AS I KNOW, THE EMERGENCY BRAKE HAS NEVER BEEN USED IN THE 17 YEAR LIFE OF THIS CAR.

THEN THE BRAKES GAVE OUT. THEN, THE POWER STEERING GAVE OUT. THE CAR STARTED SMOKING PRODUCING BLACK CHEMICAL SMOKE INTO THE CABIN. THEN, FIRE STARTED SHOOTING OUT OF THE VENTS. WITH NO BRAKES AND FIRE AND SMOKE INTO THE CAR, THE DRIVER WAS FORCED TO JUMP OUT OF THE VEHICLE AND ROLL ONTO THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSTATE WITH THE CAR STILL GOING 30-40 MPH. THE DRIVER WAS IN EXTREME DANGER INSIDE THE CAR AND OBVIOUSLY LAYING ON THE INTERSTATE AS WELL. THE CAR ENDED UP IN THE DITCH WHILE COMPLETELY ENGULFED IN FLAMES. HE WAS ABLE TO GET ONTO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED TO PUT OUT THE FIRE. THEY DETERMINED THE FIRE STARTED INSIDE THE AREA OF THE HEATING CORE. THE FIRE WAS SO HOT THAT IT MELTED THE BOLTS WE WERE TOLD BY THE FIRE MARSHAL. THERE OBVIOUSLY WAS SOMETHING FAULTY WITH THE HEATER CORE TO GIVE THIS MUCH DAMAGE. THE DRIVER WAS TREATED AT THE ER FOR SMOKE INHALATION. THE CONTENTS IN THE CAR WERE EITHER BURNED, MELTED, OR HAVE SEVERE SMOKE DAMAGE. THE VEHICLE IS A COMPLETE LOSS OF COURSE. WE LOST MANY ITEMS OF VALUE INSIDE THE VEHICLE. WE WOULD LIKE TO BE REIMBURSED FOR THE CAR, THE DAMAGED OR DESTROYED CONTENTS AND ANY MEDICAL BILLS.

AFTER 18 MONTHS, THE ENGINE LIGHT REMAINED LIT ALL THE TIME. IT WOULD STALL IN TRAFFIC AND THE OIL LIGHT WOULD APPEAR. AT THIS POINT, AFTER READING THOUSANDS OF OTHERS COMPLAINTS ON THIS VEHICLE/ENGINE AND UNDERSTANDING ENGINE REPAIR COSTS WOULD ECLIPSE THE VALUE, I DECIDED THE VEHICLE WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE.

I purchased this car from a lovely older lady who had already upgraded to a newer Intrepid and was looking to sell her old one. Before finalizing the purchase, I took the car to her trusted mechanic who provided a detailed history of all the work that had been done on the vehicle. The car had already undergone major repairs such as a new water pump and timing belt, and I also invested in newer tires. Over time, I had to replace the tie rod ends and control arms due to the ball joints being pressed into the control arm. Additionally, I replaced the wires, plugs, O2 sensor, stereo, speakers, and tinted the windows. Although I wish the car had come with alloys instead of steel wheels, overall it's been a great experience. The car has over 175,255 miles on it and is still running strong!

Your Intrepid sounds like a real trooper! With 319,000km or 198,000 miles on the original drive train and still not using oil between changes, it's clear that this car has been well taken care of. It's great to hear that it still averages 10 litres /100km or almost 30mpg. Plus, it's always a bonus when a car is easy to work on and the dealer has been helpful with any issues. It's impressive that you're the original owner too!

I've owned my Intrepid for over a year now, purchasing it at 39,000 miles. I've only experienced one issue with the check engine light intermittently turning on and off, but upon inspection, no problems were found. Aside from that, the car's performance has been great. The back seats are roomy and comfortable for my two kids, and the trunk is incredibly spacious, providing ample room for toys, car supplies, and groceries all at once. I've even installed a TV/DVD player and new CD player without any issues. As long as you keep up with the car's engine maintenance, you'll be good to go.

This car is fast and powerful with a 3.5-liter engine. It has never broken down on me and only had a small oil leak once. The handling is great and you can take this baby on the highway and find yourself going 80 mph while feeling like you're going 50. It's very smooth and reliable, with no transmission problems like the 95 and 96 models had. This is the last year they created this design, and they got all the kinks out from the previous 2 years.

I recently purchased this Intrepid from its third owner. Despite the previous owner's neglect, I was pleasantly surprised to see that it still runs. It has a 3.3L engine and gets 16mpg in town and 28mpg on the highway. As a qualified technician, I can confidently vouch for the reliability of the Intrepid.

Bought as a program car, it has 54K miles on it. Unfortunately, I have experienced numerous mechanical problems, including the AC going out at 30K, the front right strut at 40K, the left control arm bar at 50K, and the AC and alternator belts at 53K. Even the Dodge emblem fell off the front hood. It has been a frustrating experience. When I tried to trade it in, the dealer only offered me 2k for it, which was disappointing. This experience has made me hesitant to buy American cars in the future.

This car is fast enough to get you a hefty speeding ticket, but not fast enough to outrun a police cruiser. It's a great car if you take care of it. While it may not run like a $50,000 luxury model, it still provides good value for a large car. If you're looking for opinions on local dealers, ask around your town. I've had good service where I bought it, but I've had bad experiences with other dealerships' ability to perform maintenance when I'm out of town.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 1994 base that I bought back in 1998 with 87,000 km on it. I'm happy to report that the car has been a reliable companion for me, with the a/c still working and pretty much everything else still in good condition. Of course, there have been some minor issues along the way, such as a short in the rear defogger, but nothing that couldn't be fixed. I did have a tranny problem back in 2002, but I had it rebuilt for $2,500 and it's been working great ever since. The only downside for me is the lack of head room and not the best mileage, but I'm still looking for a small 4 cyl while keeping the Intrepid. Oh, and I'm proud to say that I've never had to change the exhaust system and I never get stuck in the snow, even with just all-season tires. The rear springs were done about 2 years ago, so it's still in good shape overall.

This car has had just about every front end component replaced, and due to its design, every job is an expensive one. The transmission was replaced at 38,000 miles, and I fear that it is ready to go again. The A/C has had six separate problems, and the car eats belts like I eat pizza.

However, I was able to address these problems by spending $1700 on rebuilding the engine. Despite the challenges, I was able to successfully resolve the issues and ensure the car's longevity.
