2002 Dodge Intrepid problems
The Dodge Intrepid is a full-sized front-wheel drive four-door sedan that was produced by Dodge for the 1993 to 2004 model years. It is related to the Chrysler 300M, Chrysler Concorde, Chrysler LHS, Chrysler New Yorker, and Eagle Vision which were all built on Chrysler's new "cab forward" LH platform.
The Intrepid was sold in Canada as the Chrysler Intrepid. In the United States, it replaced the Dodge Monaco as Dodge's largest passenger car. With Dodge's introduction to Mexico during that time, it was badged as a Dodge, replacing the Dynasty which had been sold there under the Chrysler brand.
Background
The Intrepid's design goes back to 1986, when designer Kevin Verduyn completed the initial exterior design of a new aerodynamic concept sedan called Navajo. The design never passed the clay model stage. It was also at this time that the Chrysler Corporation purchased bankrupt Italian sports car manufacturer Lamborghini. The Navajo's exterior design was reworked and became the Lamborghini Portofino, released as a concept at the 1987 Frankfurt Auto Show. The Portofino was heralded as a design triumph, setting in motion Chrysler's decision to produce a production sedan with the Portofino's revolutionary exterior design, called "cab forward". The cab forward design was characterized by the long, low slung windshield, and relatively short overhangs. The wheels were effectively pushed to the corners of the car, creating a much larger passenger cabin than the contemporaries of the time.
Design of the chassis began in the late 1980s, after Chrysler had bought American Motors Corporation (AMC) in 1987. During this time, Chrysler began designing the replacement for the then-new Dodge Dynasty, which was a mid-size car. Initial proposals bore resemblance to the Dynasty, but this design approach was scrapped entirely in 1988 by François Castaing, the former AMC Vice President of product engineering and development. As AMC was purchased by Chrysler, Castaing became new Vice President for Vehicle Engineering for the new company. The acquiring automaker was in desperate need of replicating the AMC and Renault corporate culture where work was conducted in an atmosphere "of constant change". Castaing organized Chrysler's departments into AMC-style cross-function teams, as well as incorporated the use of simultaneous engineering. Moreover, the new vehicle's design, under Castaing's leadership, began with the Eagle Premier platform.
The Premier's longitudinal engine mounting layout was inherited, as was the front suspension geometry, and parts of the braking system. The chassis itself became a flexible architecture capable of supporting front or rear-wheel drive (designated "LH" and "LX" respectively). The chassis design was continually refined throughout the following years, as it underpinned more Chrysler prototypes: the 1989 Chrysler Millennium and 1990 Eagle Optima. The transmission was inspired by the Premier's Audi and ZF automatics. Borrowing heavily from Chrysler's A604 (41TE) "Ultradrive" transversely mounted automatic, it became the A606 (also known as 42LE).The initial standard 3.3 L pushrod V6 engine was joined in 1990 with a 3.5 L SOHC engine with four valves per cylinder. For the second generation Intrepid R/T the block was recast in aluminum as part of a comprehensive upgrade.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2011-01-10
- VIN: 2B3HD46R92H
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: IGNITION SWITCH FAILURE. AFTER TURNING OFF CAR, SWITCH SLIPS INTO ACCESSORY POSITION AND DRAINS BATTERY. CAR DOES NOT START WHEN I RETURN TO THE CAR TO GO SOMEWHERE. I NEED TO PAY FOR A JUMP OR NEW BATTERY, OR TOW TO MY MECHANIC. THEN I HAVE TO KEEP REPLACING THE IGNITION SWITCH. THE ORIGINAL IGNITION SWITCH LASTED UNTIL 2011. THE AFTER MARKET IGNITION SWITCHES FAIL WITHIN ABOUT A YEAR. SOMETIMES WITHIN A FEW MONTHS. SINCE JAN. 2011, I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE IGNITION SWITCH ON 1/10/11 COST $147.50, 2/16/2012, COST $220.39, ALTERNATOR ASSEMBLY, COST $588.28 (MECHANIC THOUGHT IT COULDN'T BE THE SWITCH AGAIN), STARTER ASSEMBLY AGAIN 2/21/14, COST $384.23; RECOMMENDED I REPLACE THE RADIO SINCE THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM SHORTED OUT 3/14/2014, COST $45:IGNITION SWITCH AGAIN ON 8/01/14, COST $110.56. ALSO THIS CAR KEEPS HAVING THE LEFT REAR TAILLIGHTS FAIL. THEY TELL ME THIS IS ALL PART OF THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM SHORT WHICH THEY GUESS IS CAUSING ALL OF THE ABOVE PROBLEMS. BUT ALL THESE PROBLEMS DIDN'T EXIST UNTIL I MADE THE FIRST REPLACEMENT OF THE ORIGINAL IGNITION SWITCH. I BELIEVE THAT THE AFTERMARKET WAS FULL OF FAULTY GM IGNITION SWITCHES AND THERE WAS NO WAY FOR MY MECHANIC TO TELL IF WE WERE GETTING BAD GM DESIGNED SWITCHES. LUCKILY FOR ME AND MY PASSENGERS MY CAR DIDN'T FAIL WHILE I WAS DRIVING. IT ALWAYS HAPPENED WHEN THE CAR WAS PARKED. BUT HAVING 95 YEAR OLD PASSENGERS, ON HOT FLORIDA DAYS, GET INTO A CAR THAT WON'T START, CANNOT BE COOLED DOWN, CANNOT EVEN ROLL DOWN THE WINDOWS SINCE THEY ARE ELECTRIC , THESE CONDITIONS COULD HAVE KILLED MY ELDERLY FRAGILE PASSENGERS. THERE SHOULD BE SOME WAY OF INSURING THAT ALL THOSE BAD SWITCHES ARE REMOVED FROM THE AFTERMARKET. *TR

- Summary: WE BOUGHT THIS CAR AS THE THIRD OWNER THE AIR BAG LIGHT WAS ON THE CRUISE CONTROL DIDN'T WORK AND THE HORN WOULDN'T SOUND.AFTER SEARCHING THE INTERNET,AND FINDING OUT THAT THEY HAD MANY MANY OF THE INTERNAL PASTS CHANGED AND THE MULTITUDES OF PEOPLE REIMBURSED, WE TOOK OUR CAR TO THE DEALER AND TOLD BECAUSE WE WERE THE THIRD OWNER,AND THAT THE MILEAGE WAS HIGH,THEY WOULD NOT ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY. THE CAR WAS NEVER BEEN IN A ACCIDENT,NOR HAS IT BEEN ABUSED. I THINK THAT BECAUSE MY HORN CAN'T WORK IT MAY BE A CONCERN. I ALSO THINK WILE DRIVING MY AIR BAG MAY DEPLOY CAUSING AN INSIDENT.BOTH DODGE INTREPID , AND OTHER DODGES HAVE THE SAME PROBLEMS. THE PROBLEM CAN BE RESOLVED BY PAYING 4-TO5 HUNDRED DOLLARS TO THE CONSUMER. I FEEL AS THOUGH THE COST AND REPLACEMENT OF THE PART SHOULD GO BACK TO THE MANUFACTURER AS IT IS AN INTERNAL PART IN THE STEERING THAT BREAKS WITH OUT WARNING AND WITHOUT ANY CAUSE FROM OUTSIDE SOURCES I.E.ACCEDENTSOR OTHER. BECAUSE NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE CONTACTED YOU, THE MANUFACTURER DECIDED IT WASN'T GOOD ENOUGH TO BE CONSIDERED OR ISSUE A RECALL.

THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BY CLEANING THE SLUDGE OUT OF THE ENGINE HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. - Summary: MY 2002 DODGE INTREPID HAS HAD MANY PROBLEMS SINCE I BOUGHT IT ROUGHLY FOUR YEARS AGO. I WAS INFORMED THAT IT HAD A REBUILT ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION. JUST RECENTLY IT HAS BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS SHIFTING OUT OF KNOW WHERE. I WAS AT THE STOP LIGHT AND WHEN IT TURNED GREEN I PRESSED ON THE GAS AND IT DID NOT WANT TO GO. I LET UP THE GAS AND IT KICKED IN TO FIRST GEAR. WHEN I AM DRIVING AND GETTING UP TO ABOUT 30-35 MPH IT WOULD GO UP TO 3RPM AND NOT SHIFT. I DO REGULAR OIL CHANGES ON BOTH THE TRANSMISSION AND ENGINE. THIS PROBLEM CAN CAUSE AN ACCIDENT BECAUSE THE CAR IS JUST DOING WHATEVER IT WANTS TO. AFTER READING ALL THESE OTHER COMPLAINTS IT IS VERY SIMILAR TO MY PROBLEM. I AM UNDERSTANDING NOW WHY DODGE STOPPED MAKING INTREPID. I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED AND WILL NEVER BUY DODGE AGAIN. *TR

I'm glad to hear that you've enjoyed owning this vehicle! It's unfortunate that you've had some issues with the AC and electrical, but it's great to hear that the car is still going strong and looks good after seven years.
-
I bought my first Intrepid SE with all the extras and I absolutely love it! It's really fun to drive and roomy too. The gas mileage could be a little better, but overall it's an extremely comfortable car that's very easy to handle. The rear visibility and car length can make parking a bit difficult, but it's easy to get over when you consider how great this car is. I'm so happy I bought it!
-
Hey there! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. My dad bought it when it was 2 years old with only 20K miles on it, and it was in great condition - not a single scratch or dent! We've taken it on some long trips, from Twinfalls, Idaho to Denver and even to Portland, Oregon, and it's been a reliable ride. Now that I own it with 110K miles on it, I can confidently say that it still looks great and runs smoothly. The power, looks, reliability, and gas mileage are all awesome, and it can even give some V8s a run for their money with the 3.8 engine. Even after my mom had an accident with it, it's still been an awesome car. I've put 22,000 miles on it and only had to replace the rear brakes - that's it! Thanks for listening to my story.
-
This car has been the best I have ever had! I bought it with only 16 miles and now have over 151K. I want to go over 300K with it. I would love to buy another Intrepid, but unfortunately, this body style is not available anymore and I can't seem to find a car that I would like to drive. I feel very comfortable driving on the highway every day. The engine is strong and the handling is great. Michigan driving in all weather is not a problem at all!

I've owned my SXT for almost two years now and I'm happy to report that I haven't had any problems with it. Unfortunately, I was rear-ended just eight months after buying it, but the shop did an excellent job of restoring it to near-new condition. Despite the accident, the car has been mechanically sound. It's a great car for both long-distance travel and quick trips to the corner store. As a MOPAR fan since my teenage years, I appreciate how the styling of this car fits in with some of the classics, such as the 68-70 Charger. I'm looking forward to seeing this car exceed 100K miles before I even consider a replacement.

I had a bad experience with my 02 Dodge Intrepid. Unfortunately, the engine blew after needing a water pump, which is a known issue with Intrepids according to the internet and mechanics. I would not recommend buying an Intrepid. Additionally, the vehicle had the engine light on when I left the parking lot with it, and there was no warranty provided. While European Auto did fix some of the issues, they suddenly went out of business without fulfilling their promise to buy my Isuzu Trooper and issue me a check for it. Although they sold the Trooper the first week, I never received the promised check.

At 57K miles, we purchased this car and primarily used it for highway driving. Unfortunately, at 122K miles, the engine failed due to a known issue with oil sludge buildup caused by a poor oil pan design. Despite the expensive cost of the engine replacement, Chrysler only reimbursed us for about 1/3 of the cost. As a result, we have decided not to purchase another Dodge product and are currently in the process of car shopping.

I strongly advise against purchasing any Dodge vehicle. My personal experience with a used car resulted in frequent overheating issues, followed by major engine problems. Despite multiple repairs, the car has only been usable for 2 out of the 3 years I have owned it. Additionally, my brother also experienced numerous issues with his Stratus. Based on these experiences, I cannot recommend Dodge vehicles with confidence.

The car has had a few issues over the years, including needing new brakes in 2004 and 2006, and experiencing problems with the automatic windows. Additionally, the paint on the bumper has begun to flake off. In August of 2009, the car required a new transmission and cam shaft. Unfortunately, in November of the same year, the engine was completely ruined by oil sludge, despite the car only having 110,000 miles on it.
