1993 Dodge Dynasty problems

The Dodge Dynasty is a mid-size four-door sedan that was marketed by the Dodge division of Chrysler Corporation from 1988 until 1993 model years. Serving as the direct successor of the Dodge 600 sedan, the Dynasty was slotted between the Dodge Spirit and Dodge Monaco in the Dodge sedan line.
One of the largest Chrysler K-car variants, the Dynasty used the front-wheel drive Chrysler C/AC platform, sharing its body with the 1988–1993 Chrysler New Yorker. The 1990 through 1993 Chrysler New Yorker Fifth Avenue and Chrysler Imperial share the platform with the Dynasty/New Yorker, but use an extended-wheelbase chassis, denoted the Chrysler Y platform (the longest-wheelbase sedan variant of the K-car).
Chrysler assembled the Dodge Dynasty at its Belvidere Assembly Plant facility (Belvidere, Illinois) alongside the Chrysler New Yorker, New Yorker Fifth Avenue, and Imperial. The final vehicle was produced on May 28, 1993. For the 1993 model year, Dodge introduced the Dodge Intrepid as its largest sedan line, replacing both the Dynasty and the Monaco.

This is the best car I have ever owned! I purchased it as a rental return/program car from a dealer who had 50 of them for sale, all at the same price. I test drove 5 of them until I found the perfect one, which drove the salesman crazy, but I didn't care about the color. We raised our young family in this car, and when we traded up to a van in 1998, my 10-year-old son mourned our white Dynasty's passing like it was a dead relative! In the 100K miles we put on this car, all I did was replace the brakes once, spark plugs twice, plug wires once, battery once, serpentine belt and the bearing it rode on once, and standard maintenance.

I love it! This car has never let me down, unlike some of the other cars I've owned. I remember one very cold winter day when most newer cars were stuck in the mall parking lot, but my car started right up as if it was a sunny day in shorts. It will be hard to part with someday, but I'll keep fixing it until it can go no more.

I absolutely adore traditional large, comfortable cruisers, and the Dodge Dynasty fits the bill perfectly. As Chrysler's full-sized offering of the time, it was intended to replace the Diplomat, and it did so with flying colours. The car boasted traditional and conservative styling without looking dated, and I was lucky enough to own two of them. My first was a 1989 model with the LE package, and I loved it so much that I got a 1991 model afterwards. The power options and the softness and roominess of the front seat were particularly impressive, making it feel like driving your living room couch to work. The ride was soft and floaty, the interior was put-you-to-sleep quiet, the 3.3 V6 was powerful, smooth and quiet, and the transmission was smooth until it started hunting for gears in town or on an incline. It did come with its problems too, however. At 117k miles, the transmission shifted into 2nd gear from a highway cruising speed of 65 and never shifted out again. I had it replaced with a low mileage transmission for $600, and I never had another ounce of trouble again. Even after 150k miles, the car still looked and performed beautifully. The power windows and locks never failed, and neither did the A/C. I was truly sad to see it go when I sold it.

I purchased my Dynasty from my grandmother in 1998. She had bought it from Budget Car Sales when it had only 30,000 miles on it. I bought it with 98,000 miles and today it has over 200,000 miles on it and is still running strong! I had to rebuild the transmission, but besides the normal repairs and replacements, I have never had any issues with it. It has never left me stranded anywhere, and the seats are still as comfortable as ever! The seats alone are reason enough to own this car! The engine, comfort, and design are all great! In my opinion, Dodge made a big mistake by discontinuing this automobile. I will continue to drive it until the body rusts away! I absolutely love my Dodge!

This has truly been a great car, but it is time to say goodbye. Although we have had some minor repairs, the engine has almost reached 160,000 miles since we got her at 88,000. Unfortunately, as she has aged, more things are starting to go wrong. The electrical system has completely gone out, leaving only the headlights working. Despite our best efforts, it keeps failing within a few days. Additionally, there is a heavy rattle in the engine. However, we are grateful for the many years of reliable service it has provided us. We cannot complain.

I purchased this car because I believed it had more to offer than a Taurus. I was able to get a great deal on a comfortable car. However, there were a few issues that I encountered. The base model did not have any cup holders, and the back doors tended to pop open or not latch shut in cold weather. I found that I needed to warm up the car before the back doors would stay closed. Additionally, I was surprised to find that I had to spend $300 on paint to remove lower body surface rust. Despite the 10-year warranty against rust through, I had to address the issue before it became worse.

Despite the recent transmission issue, I have been thoroughly enjoying my 91 dynasty. It has been a reliable car, starting up without fail until now. I have decided to have a used transmission installed and am confident that it will restore the car to its former glory. Although the odometer broke at 47,000 k, I have found the bench seats to be quite comfortable. While they may not be as ergonomic as their Japanese counterparts, they still provide a pleasant driving experience. Additionally, the car boasts a reasonably powerful engine. Overall, I am pleased with my 91 dynasty and look forward to many more enjoyable drives.

I purchased this vehicle used, knowing that the transmission needed special attention. Since I work on my own car, changing the transmission fluid frequently has been easy and has paid off. It's an excellent car, extremely undervalued, and drives smoothly with a very comfortable and roomy interior (for its size, it's no Deville!).
Corbin Kertzmann 2025-03-19
I purchased my Dodge from a used car lot with 56,000 miles. Despite only being 3 months later and having driven only 61,000 miles, the transmission has failed. It is my professional opinion that this car is not a recommended purchase. Please exercise caution before making a decision.
Jarrell Herzog 2025-03-04
You've had this car for almost 3 years and it's only needed 2 repairs, which is pretty impressive for a 10-year-old car. It's very roomy, although the outside appearance isn't the best. As a young person, you find it a bit too big, but the V6 engine provides great power. Plus, the trunk is huge!
