Dodge Dynasty problems

The Dodge Dynasty is a mid-size four-door sedan that was marketed by the Dodge division of Chrysler Corporation from 1988 until 1993 model years. Serving as the direct successor of the Dodge 600 sedan, the Dynasty was slotted between the Dodge Spirit and Dodge Monaco in the Dodge sedan line.
One of the largest Chrysler K-car variants, the Dynasty used the front-wheel drive Chrysler C/AC platform, sharing its body with the 1988–1993 Chrysler New Yorker. The 1990 through 1993 Chrysler New Yorker Fifth Avenue and Chrysler Imperial share the platform with the Dynasty/New Yorker, but use an extended-wheelbase chassis, denoted the Chrysler Y platform (the longest-wheelbase sedan variant of the K-car).
Chrysler assembled the Dodge Dynasty at its Belvidere Assembly Plant facility (Belvidere, Illinois) alongside the Chrysler New Yorker, New Yorker Fifth Avenue, and Imperial. The final vehicle was produced on May 28, 1993. For the 1993 model year, Dodge introduced the Dodge Intrepid as its largest sedan line, replacing both the Dynasty and the Monaco.

Common Dodge Dynasty problems
Based on the complaints from owners of Dodge Dynasty cars, common problems with these vehicles include:
- Transmission Problems: Transmission slipping and occasional failures have been a recurring problem with Dodge Dynasty cars. This could be caused by faulty shift solenoids, damaged gears, or issues with the transmission relay.
- Quality Control Lapses: Some owners have mentioned quality control issues, such as mismatched parts like a Chevrolet tailgate on a GMC pickup, indicating potential inconsistencies in manufacturing.
- Electrical System Concerns: Complaints about electrical malfunctions, like the automatic transmission relay causing transmission issues, have been raised by owners. This could lead to operational problems and require troubleshooting to identify the root cause.
- Reliability of Ultradrive Automatic Transmission: The Ultradrive 4-speed automatic transmission used in Dodge Dynasty cars has been known to have flaws, including solenoid pack failures and burnt clutch packs. These issues can lead to transmission slipping and locking into gears, necessitating repairs or replacements.
- General Wear and Tear: Over time, Dodge Dynasty cars may experience wear and tear issues like oil leaks, which, if left unaddressed, can lead to more significant problems and impact the overall performance of the vehicle.
By addressing these common problems in detail, Dodge Dynasty owners can better understand the potential issues they might face with their vehicles and take appropriate measures to maintain and repair them effectively.

IT DID CAUSE THE SERPINTINE BELT TO COME OFF OF ALL THE PULLIES OF THE MOTOR. I HAD TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED HOME, AGAIN FOR THE SECOND TIME SINCE SEPT. 2006. HEN THE VEHICLE WAS AT MY HOME I FINISHED REMOVING THE PULLEY THAT WAS LOOSE, CAUSING IT TO BENT ENOUGH TO THROW IT TOTALLY OFF OF ITS TENSION PURPOSE. UPON REMOVAL A BOLT WAS ALSO BROKEN WHICH MAY HAVE CAUSED THE TOTAL PROBLEM BECAUSE IT WAS NOT TIGHTENED TO TORQUE SPECS. HAD TO REPLACE BOTH PARTS ATTACHED TO THIS PULLEY.*AK

Your 1991 Dynasty sounds like a great car! It has been with you for 11 years and has clocked 189,000 miles, which is impressive. Although it needs some work now, the 3.3 V6 engine is still going strong. You have only had to replace a few parts, such as two water pumps, a starter, and a transmission overhaul at 155,000 miles. It has a good ride and great styling. It's unfortunate that most Dynasty's have rust at the bottom of the front right passenger door, but it's great that you were able to fix it for only $100. I understand that you were disappointed to find out that neither rear door opens from the inside since the 180,000 mile mark. Nonetheless, it's clear that you really like your Dynasty and it has served you well. You'll hate to see it go.

I love this car because it is easy to drive. It's quiet, good on gas, and my husband approves of it too.

I absolutely adore traditional large, comfortable cruisers, and the Dodge Dynasty fits the bill perfectly. As Chrysler's full-sized offering of the time, it was intended to replace the Diplomat, and it did so with flying colours. The car boasted traditional and conservative styling without looking dated, and I was lucky enough to own two of them. My first was a 1989 model with the LE package, and I loved it so much that I got a 1991 model afterwards. The power options and the softness and roominess of the front seat were particularly impressive, making it feel like driving your living room couch to work. The ride was soft and floaty, the interior was put-you-to-sleep quiet, the 3.3 V6 was powerful, smooth and quiet, and the transmission was smooth until it started hunting for gears in town or on an incline. It did come with its problems too, however. At 117k miles, the transmission shifted into 2nd gear from a highway cruising speed of 65 and never shifted out again. I had it replaced with a low mileage transmission for $600, and I never had another ounce of trouble again. Even after 150k miles, the car still looked and performed beautifully. The power windows and locks never failed, and neither did the A/C. I was truly sad to see it go when I sold it.

I'm so glad to hear that you had such a positive experience with your car! It's great to know that it has held up so well over the years, even after driving over 110,000 miles. The ride sounds solid and reliable, with no annoying squeaks or major problems. It's impressive that you were able to get such a great deal on a loaded car back in 1993, and it's even better that it still doesn't rust. It's wonderful to hear that this vehicle has never left you stranded, and it's reassuring to know that it performed well in crash tests. It seems like Chrysler products from 1992-1994 were really top-notch. Thanks for sharing your experience, and good luck with your future car purchases!

I purchased this vehicle used, knowing that the transmission needed special attention. Since I work on my own car, changing the transmission fluid frequently has been easy and has paid off. It's an excellent car, extremely undervalued, and drives smoothly with a very comfortable and roomy interior (for its size, it's no Deville!).

I purchased my Dodge from a used car lot with 56,000 miles. Despite only being 3 months later and having driven only 61,000 miles, the transmission has failed. It is my professional opinion that this car is not a recommended purchase. Please exercise caution before making a decision.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I noticed that you mentioned a few issues with your car, but it sounds like you've done a great job taking care of it so far! After putting in a new radiator, transmission filter, and spark plugs, it's great to hear that you haven't had any other problems. Although the odometer doesn't work and the A/C needs to be recharged with R12, it's good to know that all other speeds on the blower switch work. I understand that the gas mileage isn't ideal, but you're still getting around 10 miles per gallon in town and 15 on the highway, which is pretty good. Let me know if there's anything else I can help you with!

You've had this car for almost 3 years and it's only needed 2 repairs, which is pretty impressive for a 10-year-old car. It's very roomy, although the outside appearance isn't the best. As a young person, you find it a bit too big, but the V6 engine provides great power. Plus, the trunk is huge!

Why did they stop producing this car? I guess it was a mistake to make a car that just won't die, haha! I bought my 91 Dynasty in '98 with less than 39k. It is truly a low-maintenance, very dependable (3.3L) car. It's like a good friend that never lets you down! Although my paint was bad, I got a new paint job and it looked brand new! Keep your eye on it because thieves like it. Mine was stolen, but luckily I got it back a week later.
