2019 Hyundai Ioniq hybrid problems

The Hyundai Ioniq is a compact five-door liftback manufactured and marketed by Hyundai. The nameplate Ioniq is a portmanteau of ion and unique. It is marketed as the first Hyundai automobile to be offered without a standard internal combustion engine, but rather sold in hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and all-electric variants.
The Ioniq Hybrid debuted in South Korea in January 2016, with all three variants debuting at 2016 Geneva and New York auto shows. The hybrid variant launched in its home market in February 2016, followed by the electric model in July 2016. The plug-in hybrid version followed in February 2017.
From its first model year (2017) through the 2019 model year, the Ioniq Electric had been the EPA's most efficient vehicle with a rated fuel economy of 136 miles per gallon gasoline equivalent (24.8 kWh/100 mi; 15.4 kWh/100 km). The Ioniq Blue Hybrid version has been rated at 4.1 L/100 km (58 mpg‑US), making it the most fuel-efficient hybrid vehicle to be mass-produced.
Following its discontinuation in South Korea in 2021, production of the Ioniq ended in July 2022 in favour of battery electric lineup of Ioniq-badged models starting from the Ioniq 5 hatchback and Ioniq 6 sedan with Ioniq 7 to follow.

The third visit in February 2021 identified two major issues, with 21K miles. The steering wheel column/shaft was replaced, and the transmission will need to be replaced due to a grinding noise upon deceleration.
In addition to these issues, the 2019 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid has been reported to have problems with the electrical accessories, noises and leaks, exhaust, in-car electronics, steering and suspension, electric motor, and engine major. Some of the trouble spots include cruise control, clock, warning lights, body control module, keyless entry, wiper motor or washer, tire pressure monitor, interior or exterior lights, horn, gauges, 12V power plug, USB ports, alarm or security system, remote engine start, heated or cooled seats, heated steering wheel, headlights, automatic headlights, automatic wipers, and wireless charging pad.

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-15
- VIN: KMHC85LC6KU
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: This car, along with several other models of Kia and Hyundai, are unsafe due to the ease with which they can be stolen. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not yet contacted. The failure mileage was 69,000.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-26
- VIN: KMHC65LC0KU
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE
- Summary: My 2019 hyndai ioniq electrical system stopped working and results in the front door claiming that is not open. An internet search showed that this is common many hyundais and in particular the ioniq. The issue with this is 1) there is no way to know how bad this electrical issue, 2) since the door may or may not be open, the risk of the door opening while driving is present, and 3) all other notifications on my dash are no longer usable; i have no way of knowing fuel left, mpg, or any other safety warnings on the dash. Finally, the issue creates a constant beep that does not stop. This is a safety issue seeing as it is so loud, it makes being aware of the sounds around us nearly impossible to hear.
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-12-14
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- Crash: 1
- VIN: KMHC65LC1KU
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: The contact owns a 2019 Hyundai Ioniq. The contact stated that while attempting to park into her son's parking pad, the vehicle independently accelerated reverse while in the reverse(R) position. The vehicle initially hit a gutter on the side of the house; as the vehicle continued to accelerate, the contact forcefully depressed the brake pedal but to no avail. The vehicle continued to accelerate in reverse as it hit a porch column which swung the vehicle around and off the parking pad. The vehicle then hit a tree as she stood up on the brake pedal which finally stopped the acceleration. The contact immediately placed the vehicle into park and exited the vehicle. Once the acceleration stopped, her son parked the vehicle and informed her that several warning lights and warning chimes had sounded as he parked the vehicle. The contact sustained minor soreness and emotional trauma as a result of the failure but did not seek medical attention. A police report was not filed and the vehicle had yet to be towed. Her son's porch column and downspout gutter were damaged as a result of the failure. The manufacturer was notified about the failure and informed her that there were no recalls on her vehicle. The vehicle had yet to be diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 33,500.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-06-20
- Number Of Injuries: 2
- Crash: 1
- Fire: 1
- VIN: KMHC75LC9KU
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: One morning, my father turned on the car. It was still in Park. He and my mom heard a noise, as if my dad was pushing on the gas pedal, but he was not. They turned off the car, turned it on again, and everything seemed fine. After driving for a bit, my father was back home and parking the car. Because of the way the parking lot is, you have to go slowly, less than 10 miles an hour, pushing on the gas a little to go up and incline and then turn right to slide into the parking spot as you break to finally park. As he was pulling into the parking spot, the car suddenly accelerated uncontrollably, and crashed hard into the building ahead. It broke pieces of the building, and the entire front of the car is totaled. My parents saw fire under the hood and my mom suffered a hand injury. They are otherwise unharmed. I know Unintended Sudden Acceleration was an issue with Ioniq EVs from 2019. It looks like it is happening to the hybrids as well. Thank you for looking into it.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-12-10
- VIN: kmhc85lcxku
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I am not sure who to report this to, but NHTSA and Hyundai corporate office both report the car as having no recalls. The local dealership says it has 3, 2 for computer errors (my car currently has a computer error). When I asked the main Hyundai support people about this, they stated local dealership and the corporate office have different systems. I can concerned Hyundai is hiding recalls from the public by keeping them on a separate system at dealerships and not on the main website or NHTSA.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-04-21
- VIN: KHMC05LC6KU
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: RECALL WORK WAS PERFORMED TO FIX ANY POSSIBLE OVERHEATING ISSUES. A MONTH LATER I NOTICE ME HEATER NOT WORKING AND THEN IT STARTS OVER HEATING AND SMOKING FROM THE BACK, I TAKE IT IN AND THEY CLAIM THAT IT'S JUST A BUBBLE IN THE RADIATOR. ON 04/21/2020 ABOUT A MONTH LATER WITHOUT ANY WARNING LIGHTS PRIOR IT FLASHES THAT MY ENGINE IS OVERHEATED AND LARGE CLOUDS OF WHITE SMOKE STARTS COMING OUT OF MY EXHAUST PIPE. HYUNDAI SERVICE DEPARTMENT SAID THAT BECAUSE OF A FAULTY SWITCH COOLANT LEAKED INTO MY ENGINE AND THE ENGINE IS NOW RUINED AND NEEDS TO BE COMPLETELY REPLACED.

- Summary: FOR THE SECOND COLD MORNING THIS YEAR MY IONIQ STALLED. I WAS PARKED IN MY DRIVEWAY. TEMPERATURE WAS -3F, I PRESS THE POWER BUTTON, CAR TRIED TO START AND STALLED THREE TIMES IN A ROW THEN GOT A CHECK HYBRID SYSTEM WARNING MESSAGE. I'm so glad I finally got the car I wanted! It's amazing how efficient it is in the Los Angeles traffic, and I love that I can drive almost entirely on electric. The acceleration and brake regeneration are outstanding, and the intelligent cruise control is fantastic (although it can be a little scary at times). I have to admit, the electronic gearbox changes can be a bit rough, but overall I'm really happy with my Hyundai. Thanks for making such a great car!

In April 2019, I traded in my 2014 Accent GLS Hatchback 6-speed for a new Ioniq Hybrid Blue. I absolutely loved driving the Accent, but found the cargo space to be somewhat limiting at times, which was my main reason for the upgrade. So far, I have been blown away by the Ioniq. The car is incredibly comfortable, quiet, and easy to drive, and the mileage has been nothing short of amazing. I used to get about 5.5 L/100km in the Accent, but to date, I am averaging 4.0 L/100km with the Ioniq -- amazing considering the Ioniq is a considerably larger car than the Accent. On one particular trip across Toronto in the heart of rush hour, the dash display was showing 2.9 L/100km -- that's 81 miles per U.S. gallon! I was somewhat disappointed that the Blue trim did not include the cargo cover, and the price to buy the cover in Canada is insane, so I ordered one from a U.S. dealership close to the border. My only other complaints are that the stock radio does not sound very good, and I would have liked fog lights and a tachometer in the display, but these are minor gripes. I am surprised that I don't see more Ioniq (of any

Great car so far! The gas mileage is phenomenal - over 500 miles on the first tank of gas.

Overall, this is an excellent vehicle that is easy to drive and has outstanding safety features. Additionally, it boasts great MPG.

This is definitely the best hybrid value out there! If you're not into drag racing, this car might be perfect for you. Don't let the pro reviewers fool you into thinking that all cars need to be high-performance. This car is all about style and comfort, and it won't break the bank. Plus, with 60 mpg, you can't go wrong!

I am disappointed that both the 2019 SEL and 2020 Limited models required major work before reaching 30,000 miles, despite financing around $64,000. However, I am grateful for the comfortable ride and efficiency of the car. It has taken me to various destinations, including Florida, Wisconsin, Tennessee, the coast, and the mountains. The car is stylish, well-built, and solid. It is also well-appointed and has great features such as a sound system, ApplePlay, and adaptive cruise control. Although I have had some issues with the transmission and fuel injector, I appreciate the great customer service from the dealership. I hope the car lasts through the warranty and financing period. For background, I have owned three hybrids previously and enjoyed them very much. After researching and price shopping, I chose to purchase the 2019 Hyundai Ioniq SEL, which had excellent rebates and came with a 100,000 mile powertrain warranty and a lifetime warranty on the hybrid battery. I brought up my concerns to a service advisor once again, and they kindly agreed to resurface the rotors. After the rotors were resurfaced, I requested that they take the car for a test drive and decelerate from 60 to 40 mph, and let me know what they heard. They performed the test as I described and determined that there was a problem. Although they weren't sure if it was the hybrid system or the transmission, my car was in their shop for two weeks (give or take a day), and the transmission was replaced under warranty. I was pleasantly surprised when Hyundai corporate reached out to me to ensure that I was satisfied with the service that the dealership was providing, and that I was still satisfied with my car. The great service at my Hyundai dealership (Johnson Hyundai in Cary, NC) did their best to bridge the gap between what I was sold and what I received. Although Hyundai declined to offer an extension on the warranty, I received a response from corporate after a lengthy delay in responses on their part. Since I did not respond to them within 48 hours of the receipt of their e-mail, they deemed the case closed. In conclusion, I cannot recommend this car to anyone in good faith. It will have to make it to 100,000 miles without so much as a misfire for me to be able to recommend it. The car has great features and the efficiency is the best in the class, but there's a reason that Hyundai priced it so low and offered incentives. Live and learn. Here's hoping that the little car improves with age, and I am once again satisfied with my purchase...However, I have only been able to establish a first-name basis with the service department and dealership managers so far.

Despite experiencing three major malfunctions within the first three months of owning my brand new vehicle, I am pleased to report that I have not had any further issues since reaching 19,500 miles. I continue to achieve impressive gas mileage of 55-60 mpg in warm weather and 40-45 mpg in cold weather. While I am concerned about the lack of a spare tire, I am confident in the reliability of my vehicle. It is unfortunate that I had a negative experience with Hyundai's customer service during the first few months of ownership, but I am satisfied with the performance of my car overall.

I had a bad experience with my Ioniq 2019 due to repetitive suspension issues, column shaft replacement, and transmission replacement. Unfortunately, this is the third time my car has had to go in for a warranty issue. The first issue occurred in October 2019 with less than 6K miles and in less than 6 months, where there was a defective right rear shock that was replaced. The second issue occurred in March 2020 during the second service, where there was a defective speaker that was replaced. During my third visit in February 2021, there were three more issues identified with 21K miles. The steering wheel column/shaft was replaced and the transmission will need to be replaced due to a grinding noise upon deceleration. There was also the same suspension issue in the rear back with a popping noise coming from the rear right, which the technicians and service team have not been able to identify the problem. I am disappointed with my purchase, as I bought a new car to avoid stress, discomfort, and worries about my family's safety. I do not believe that these issues are normal for a car with less than 2 years of use and less than 22K miles.

After driving 7000 miles, mostly on the freeway, I have noticed that the transmission struggles to find the correct gear on steeper hills or bridges. It is important to note that you may not achieve the advertised mileage at highway speeds of 70mph. While the interior can be noisy in the back seat area, both the interior and exterior are very nice. Unfortunately, there is no jack provided for a flat tire, and you must use a fill kit which can result in a costly bill to replace the tire and pressure sensor. Although the Sirius radio is costly and not worth the price unless you drive constantly, I still prefer it over a CD. It is important to note that it can be costly to have pay-to-play radio that sits in the driveway. Overall, I like this vehicle more than the Prius we had. However, it may take some time to get used to it, especially if you live in an area with hills. I would recommend this vehicle for those who live in flat areas. Good luck with your choice! Best regards, Agnes.

I really appreciate your feedback on the Ioniq! I can definitely understand where you're coming from with the rear window. The horizontal line created by the hatch lock can be quite distracting.
