1991 Toyota Mr2 problems
The Toyota MR2 is a line of two-seater, mid-engined, rear-wheel-drive sports cars, manufactured in Japan and marketed globally by Toyota from 1984 until 2007 over three generations: W10 (1984–1989), W20 (1989–1999) and W30 (1999–2007). It is Japan's first rear mid-engined production car.
Conceived as a small, economical and sporty car, the MR2 uses simple but effective design elements, including an inline-four engine, transversely mounted in front of the rear axle, four-wheel disc brakes, and fully independent coilover suspension – MacPherson strut fronts and Chapman strut rears.
The name MR2 stands for either "mid-ship run-about 2-seater" or "mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive, 2-seater". In French-speaking markets, the vehicle was renamed Toyota MR because the abbreviation "MR2" sounds like the profanity "merde" when spoken in French.

Common 1991 Toyota Mr2 problems
The Toyota MR2, particularly the 1991 model, is known for several common problems that often arise as the vehicle ages and accumulates mileage. Here are the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from owners:
- Ignition Key Malfunction: Another problem that tends to occur at high mileages, specifically after 100,000 miles, is that the ignition key may not work correctly. This issue can be resolved by replacing the ignition key.
- Oversteering: The MR2 is known for its tendency to oversteer, which can lead to dangerous situations if not handled properly.
- Rust: Rust is a common issue with the MR2, particularly in the sills, due to foam installed by Toyota that absorbs water and causes the car to rot from the inside out.
- Cooling System Issues: The MR2's cooling system can be problematic, with copper heater hoses that run over the fuel tank tending to crack at the brackets, leading to leaks and requiring a massive job to replace them.
- Parts Availability: Parts for the MR2 are generally available, but certain components, such as replacement engines, may be more challenging to find and could be expensive.
- Rust Spots: As with many cars of this age, rust can be a common issue, particularly in the wheel arches, sills, bottom of the doors, and other areas prone to water accumulation.
- T-Bar Roof: The T-Bar roof variant of the MR2 is a popular choice, but it is essential to check for any leaks or dampness in the interior, particularly near the front of the doors and the boot floor.
- Engine Issues: While the MR2's engine is generally reliable, it is essential to ensure that regular oil changes and cambelt swaps have been performed, particularly at the recommended intervals of 60,000 miles or five years.
In summary, the Toyota MR2 has several common problems that owners should be aware of, particularly as the vehicle ages and accumulates mileage. These issues include automatic transmission shifting problems, ignition key malfunctions, oversteering, rust, cooling system issues, parts availability, rust spots, T-Bar roof leaks, and engine issues. By being aware of these problems and taking the necessary precautions when viewing and purchasing a car, potential buyers can ensure that they are making a sound investment in a reliable and enjoyable vehicle.
Are MR2 engines reliable?
Reliable: Toyota is known for producing reliable cars, and the MR2 is no exception. With proper maintenance, it can last for many years. Fuel efficient: The MR2's small size and efficient engine make it a fuel-efficient car.
Is Toyota MR2 hard to maintain?
The 00–07 Toyota MR2 Spyder isn't much more expensive or difficult to work on than many other Toyotas of the era. Toyota didn't make any other mid-engined cars, so many components are unique to the Spyder (which means there are no other compatible models to borrow parts from).
Which year MR2 is the best?
The 1993-1995 models are particularly desirable, as they featured several upgrades, including revised suspension tuning and larger brakes. Ultimately, the "best year" for a Toyota MR2 will depend on individual preferences and priorities, such as performance, styling, and reliability.
What to look for when buying used MR2?
Used MR2 Mk1 – checking the bodywork
Probably the most important inspection of any potential buyer is to check for corrosion. Like many cars produced during this era, early MR2s are prone to corrosion later in life and you need to check them thoroughly before purchase.
Are Toyota MR2 reliable cars?
Toyota's hard-earned reputation for reliability is evident in the MR2 and there's little to be worried about when buying this mid-engined roadster. However, it's worth checking for any signs of crash damage, or track day use such as excessively worn tyre edges.

I recently purchased my first MR2 Turbo with 122k miles and it's in mint condition. I absolutely love it! The interior is a bit tight, but after a while, you forget about it. The interior design is good and the seats are comfy. The driving position is good and there are really no blind spots. It handles great and is very quick. It sips fuel as long as you're not under boost. The driving experience is much more raw, but not overbearing. It's not as smooth as the VW Corrado, but it has an approach all its own. The car sits low, so getting in and out can be a bit of a pain, but any true car enthusiast wouldn't mind. I'm very happy with my purchase and still look forward to driving it. I recently changed the gear fluid to Redline Lightweight Synthetic High Impact, which made a big difference. Although it needs a few repairs that are common with these cars, it still runs great! I plan to take care of the AC leak in the winter months and repaint it in the future. Like with all old cars, it's all about maintenance.

The MR2 is a fantastic compact car! It's lightweight, has excellent handling, and a unique appearance that turns heads. While it could benefit from more power, the turbo is available for that purpose, while the NA is perfect for tight curves. Additionally, there are other engines that can be swapped into the MR2. Overall, it's a great car that is sure to impress.

It's great to hear that you find the car fun to drive, with excellent economy and performance!

Hey there! I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your car! Even though it's 11 years old, it still runs like new, which is amazing! I know that it needed a full tune-up when you bought it, but with a little TLC, these cars can really come back to life. I think the acceleration is great on both models and the fun factor is through the roof! Of course, if you're not a fan of small cars like I am, then this might not be the car for you. It's important to find the car that fits your lifestyle. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

It's the fastest car I have ever driven. It also has the best handling. I've got the full body kit, turbo, and intercooler. The car can do the 1/4 mile in under 11 seconds. I have driven Skylines and Supras, but this MR2 is by far the best car I have ever driven.
