Plymouth Neon 1995 problems

plymouth logo

The Neon is a compact car that was built from in January 1994 until 2005 by the American Chrysler Corporation over two generations. It has a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout and came in two-door and four-door sedan body styles. In the United States it was sold as either a Dodge or a Plymouth, while in Europe, Mexico, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Egypt, Australia, South Africa, and South America it was branded as a Chrysler, the Neon was offered in multiple versions and configurations over its production life, which lasted from the 1995 model year until 2005. The Neon nameplate was subsequently resurrected in 2016 for the Dodge Neon, a rebadged variant of Fiat Tipo sedan for the Mexican market.

1991 concept car

The Neon nameplate first appeared as a concept car in 1991 under the Dodge brand. Although radically styled and clearly not production-ready featuring sliding suicide doors, the Neon concept resembled the future production vehicle.

The Neon concept was designed by Chrysler designers who had joined the company from Chrysler's buyout of American Motors Corporation (AMC) in 1987.

Common Plymouth Neon 1995 problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 1995 Plymouth Neon, several common problems have been identified:

  • Oil Filter Gasket Blowouts: Some owners experienced oil pressure problems leading to oil filter gasket blowouts, particularly when increasing the engine's RPMs. This issue could be a sign of underlying engine pressure irregularities that may require investigation and potential repairs to prevent further damage.
  • Front and Rear Engine Mount Wear: The front and rear engine mounts in manual-transmission Neons, especially in city driving conditions, were reported to wear out, typically around 100,000 miles. This wear could lead to increased engine vibrations and affect the vehicle's performance. Replacing these mounts, especially with Mopar Performance replacements, was recommended to address this issue.
  • Speedometer Issues: Some owners faced speedometer malfunctions where the speedometer would only work when pressure was applied. This issue could be related to electrical or sensor problems within the speedometer system, requiring troubleshooting and potential repairs to ensure accurate speed readings.
  • Transmission Shifting Problems: Many owners encountered difficulties getting their manual transmission into gear or reverse. These shifting problems were often attributed to worn shift linkage bushings, leading to a mushy shifter feel and difficulty engaging gears. Replacing these bushings with products like Booger Bushings was suggested as a solution to restore smooth shifting and transmission performance.

These common problems reported by owners of the 1995 Plymouth Neon highlight various issues ranging from engine performance irregularities to transmission and speedometer malfunctions. Addressing these problems promptly through proper diagnosis and repairs can help maintain the vehicle's reliability and performance.

  • Summary: MY 1995 VOYAGER WAS SUPPOSEDLY SERVICED FOR NHTSA RECALL 99V113000 AND MANUFACTURER'S RECALL 818/AIRBAG SYSTEM WIRING ON SEPTEMBER 2, 1999. AT THAT TIME THERE HAD BEEN NO FAILURE OF THE SYSTEM. WHAT WAS DONE AT THAT TIME I DO NOT KNOW. IN FEBRUARY, 2007, I WAS DRIVING IN A SNOW STORM WITH THE REAR WIPER TURNED ON. I PARKED THE VEHICLE FOR A SHORT TIME. WHEN I STARTED THE VEHICLE ABOUT AN HOUR LATER, I NOTICED THE AIRBAG LIGHT REMAINED ON. I SUBSEQUENTLY NOTICED THE REAR WIPER NO LONGER FUNCTIONED. I THOUGHT THIS WAS A STRANGE COINCIDENCE. LATER I READ AN ARTICLE ABOUT GOING ONLINE TO SEE IF THERE WERE ANY RECALLS ON YOUR CARS. THAT WAS WHEN I FOUND OUT ABOUT RECALL 99V113000. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER WHO REFUSED TO REPAIR THE MALFUNCTION ACCORDING TO THE RECALL. I CALLED CHRYSLER WHO ALSO INFORMED ME I MUST PAY TO HAVE THE SYSTEM DIAGNOSED AND PAY FOR ANY REPAIRS IF THEY DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS NOT DUE TO THE RECALL CONDITIONS. I BELIEVE THE FAILURE THAT OCCURRED WAS RELATED TO THE RECALL AND CHRYSLER IS RESPONSIBLE FOR MAKING THE REPAIR AT NO COST TO ME.
