- Summary: BOUGHT A 97 NISSAN PATHFINDER IN SEPT. 03...SHORTLY AFTER PURCHASING THE VEHICLE THE SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. THE ENGINE LIGHT HAS SINCE HAD A MIND OF ITS OWN, TURNING ON AND OFF DEPENDING ON THE CLIMATE OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE. I RECENTLY LEARNED THAT IT IS THE EVAP VENT CONTROL VALVE AND O RING WHICH NEED TO BE REPLACED. I HAD TAKEN THE CAR INTO 3 DEALERSHIPS ON THE EAST COAST WHERE I WAS TOLD NUMEROUS OTHER ISSUES WERE CAUSING THE LIGHT. I HAVE PUT $4500 WORTH OF WORK INTO THE VEHICLE ONLY TO FIND OUT THAT IT WAS A $122 PART THAT SUPPOSEDLY NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. I HAVE SPOKEN TO OTHER NISSAN OWNERS (MANY WITH OTHER NISSAN VEHICLES-NOT PATHFINDERS) AND THEY TOO HAVE HAD THIS SAME EXPERIENCE WITH THEIR VEHICLE. THE PARTS ARE NOT AVAILABLE THROUGH ANYBODY EXCEPT THE NISSAN DEALERSHIPS WHICH MEANS THERE IS NO WAY TO GET A COMPETATIVE PRICE. IN ORDER TO GET THE LIGHT TO SHUT OFF ONCE MY MECHANIC HAS REPLACED THE PARTS I WILL THEN BE FORCED TO TAKE THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP TO PAY THEM TO SHUT IT OFF. I WAS INFORMED BY THE MECHANIC AT THE DEALERSHIP THAT THIS PROBLEM WOULD NOT EFFECT THE DRIVABILITY OF THE VEHICLE THAT IT WAS AN EMISSIONS SITUATION. ULTIMATELY, THE VEHICLE WILL NOT PASS EMISSIONS INSPECTIONS NOR WILL IT GET DECENT GAS MILEAGE UNTIL THIS PART IS REPLACED.

TURNED TO THE CAR AND SAW A TWO TO FOUR INCH FLAME COMING OUT OF THE SWITCH ASSEMBLY. I PUT OUT THE FIRE. CHECKED THE FUSE BLOCK FOR A BLOWN FUSE AND THERE WAS NONE. THE FUSE DID NOT BLOW FOR THE AUTOMATIC WINDOW CIRCUIT. PULLED SWITCH ASSEMBLY AND DISCONNECTED THE WIRE HARNESS CONNECTOR. PLANNING ON REPLACING THE SWITCH ASSEMBLY AND SIDE PANEL.

THE FAILED COMPONENT/PART SECTION INDICATES THAT THERE WAS 22,000 INJURIES, THE SIDE AIRBAG DEPLOYED ON 6-1-99 AND THAT THERE WERE 35 FATALITIES. THIS IS NOT TRUE. I ENTERED THE INFORMATION CORRECTLY TWICE AND IT STILL KEEPS COMING UP INCORRECT IN THE CONFIRMATION AREA.

- Consequence: WITHOUT THE AMBER REFLECTORS, THE VEHICLE WILL BE POORLY ILLUMINATED, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A VEHICLE CRASH WITHOUT WARNING.

- Consequence: THIS CAN RESULT IN GRADUAL WEAR OVER A PERIOD OF TIME INSIDE THE JOINT THAT COULD LEAD TO THE SEPARATION OF THE WIPER LINKAGE ASSEMBLY FROM THE WIPER MOTOR LINKAGE AT THE BALL JOINT. A LOSS OF WINDSHIELD WIPER FUNCTION CAN RESULT IN THIS SEPARATION OCCURS.
- Remedy: TO PREVENT GREASE FROM BEING WASHED OUT OF THE JOINT, THE DEALERS WILL MODIFY BY ADDING A WATER DIVERSION SEAL THAT WILL PREVENT WATER FROM ENTERING THE WINDSHIELD WIPER LINKAGE BALL JOINT AREA.

I purchased my Nissan 200sx brand new in March of '97 as a leftover model. As a Navy Seabee reservist, I had the opportunity to drive it from coast to coast for the next 17 years. Along the way, I had a few run-ins with some deer and even a jeep, but thankfully, the damage was never too severe. Despite the occasional bumps and scratches, the value of my car remained high enough that the insurance company always covered the repairs. Since retiring, I've continued to drive my trusty Nissan as it still gets an impressive 53 mpg going over the Rockies and 45+ on local trips. Recently, I even rebuilt the engine and replaced the 5-speed transmission, which had worn down after all those miles. I was amazed to get 235,000 miles out of the original timing chain! If you happen to own one of these cars, I highly recommend holding onto it. In my opinion, it's worth its weight in gold. I did have to replace a length of brake line and a section of AC pressure line, but the AC still works so well that it can freeze you out! The heater is just as impressive, and I often leave it set on low while still cracking the window. Although I also own a MB, my Nissan is my go-to choice when I'm riding solo. It's like the Energizer Bunny - it just keeps going, going, going!

I bought this car brand new in '96 and now, 12 years and 211,000 miles later, the engine still runs great! It has had an oil leak for about 100,000 miles (which has always been a bit of a pain) and a few minor repairs, such as changing the CV joints, starter, alternator, front tie rods, tires, and routine maintenance. However, I have never once had to change the clutch or timing belt because it has a chain. The A/C still blows cold as ice. This car has been through everything with me over the years, but I finally bought a new car and am selling it. People at my work are literally fighting over the chance to buy it. Overall, it has been an amazing car!

The car I owned was the best! It was solid, comfortable, and very responsive. I always felt safe on the road. Nowadays, it's hard to find a car like that in the same price range.
