2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse spyder problems
The Mitsubishi Eclipse is a sport compact car that was produced by Mitsubishi in four generations from 1989 until 2011. A convertible body style was added during the 1996 model year.
The first two generations share the automobile platform and parts with the rebadged Eagle Talon and Plymouth Laser captive imports. They were built during Mitsubishi Motors' close relationship with Chrysler Corporation. Their partnership was known as Diamond-Star Motors (DSM). In Japan, the first two generations were sold at a specific Japanese retail chain called Mitsubishi Car Plaza. The third, 2000–2005 generation shared a redesigned platform with the Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Stratus. In May 2005, the fourth, and final generation Eclipse was introduced, replacing the Chrysler platform used for the third generation with the PS platform.
According to Mitsubishi Motors, the Eclipse was named after an unbeaten 18th-century English racehorse that won 18 races in a row and then retired.
At the end of August 2011, the final Eclipse was manufactured and subsequently auctioned for charity.
In 2017, Mitsubishi resurrected the Eclipse name on a compact crossover vehicle, called the Eclipse Cross.

Common 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse spyder problems
The 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder is known for several common problems that owners have reported. These issues range from mechanical problems to electrical and cosmetic concerns.
One of the most common problems reported by owners is related to the timing belt. The timing belt is a critical component of the engine that synchronizes the movement of the pistons and valves. If the timing belt breaks or jumps time, it can cause significant damage to the engine, including bent valves. Therefore, it is essential to replace the timing belt at the recommended intervals, typically around 60,000 to 100,000 miles, depending on the vehicle's maintenance history.
Another problem reported by owners is related to the fuel pump. Some owners have reported that the fuel pump fails prematurely, causing the car to lose power or stall. In some cases, the fuel pump may need to be replaced entirely.
Additionally, owners have reported problems with the electrical system, including issues with the headlights. Some owners have reported that when they turn on the headlights at night, the RPMs jump, and the car won't accelerate over 10 mph. This problem can be caused by a variety of factors, including a faulty alternator or a problem with the wiring.
Cosmetic issues are also common in the 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder. Some owners have reported that the car rusts out prematurely, with rust appearing on the body panels and the floor. This problem can be particularly prevalent in areas with harsh winter conditions or high humidity.
Finally, some owners have reported problems with the interior of the car, including issues with the seats and the climate control system. Some owners have reported that the stock seats are not comfortable for long drives, and the suspension can be harsh, causing bumps to be felt more than in a standard V4 sedan.
In summary, the 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder is known for several common problems, including issues with the timing belt, fuel pump, electrical system, cosmetic issues, and interior problems. It is essential to maintain the car regularly and address any issues promptly to avoid more significant problems down the road.

THEY SAID THERE ARE DENTS ON THE 6TH PISTON FROM SOMETHING BEING DROPPED INTO THE ENGINE THEREFORE THAT IS WHY IT WON'T HOLD COMPRESSION AND I NEED A NEW ENGINE BLOCK. THE ONLY WORK I EVER HAD DONE PRIOR TO THIS WAS OIL CHANGES EVERY 3,000 MILES. THEY WANT ME TO PAY FOR A NEW ENGINE AT 44,000 MILES. MY CAR IS STILL AT THE DEALERSHIP.

ABOUT 2 MONTHS OFTER THE ACCIDENT AND REPAIRS HAD BEEN MADE, ONE OF MY TIRES COULD NOT HOLD TIRE PRESSURE. I HAD THE TIRES REPLACED ON THE VEHICLE. THE SAME TIRE CONTINUED TO GO FLAT. I INSPECTED THE FACTORY 17" ALLOY RIM AND I FOUND A CRACK IN THE RIM. I INSPECTED THE OTHER RIMS AS WELL AND NOTICED SIMILAR SMALLER CRACKS FORMING. I DO NOT NOW IF THE CRACKS ARE DUE TO THE ACCIDENT OR DUE TO FAULTY WORKMANSHIP. A WELL MADE RIM WOULD NOT HAVE CRACKED DUE TO A RELATIVLEY MINOR IMPACT. ACCIDENT REPORT ON FILE HAMILTON TWP POLICE. TIRES,WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2004-07-15
- VIN: 4A3AE85H32E

- Summary: MY CAR STARTED SHAKING AT SPEEDS OF 15 TO 20 MPH AND PULLING HARD TO THE RIGHT. WHEN I TOOK THE CAR INTO THE DEALERSHIP THEY INFORMED ME THAT I MUST HAVE "HIT SOMETHING AT A FAST SPEED BECAUSE MY RIM WAS SEVERLY BENT. THEN THEY PROCEEDED TO TELL ME THERE WERE SEVERAL OTHER PROBLEMS WRONG. THE CAR WAS ALMOST AT 48,000 MILES. I PAID OUT OF POCKET, SIMPLY TAKING THEIR WORD FOR IT. THEN I KEPT LOSING AIR OUT OF ANOTHER TIRE ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE. AT THIS TIME I FIGURED IT WAS THE TIRE THAT I PURCHASED A FEW MONTHS EARLIER. I HAD THE TECH. TAKE A LOOK AT IT AND HE SHOWED ME THAT THERE WERE SEVERAL CRACKS IN THE RIM WHICH WERE ALLOWING THE AIR IN THE TIRE TO LEAK. ONCE AGAIN I BOUGHT THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I HAD TO SPEND ANOTHER $230 TO GET A NEW RIM. I HAVE HAD SEVERAL CARS IN MY LIFE AND NEVER ONCE HAD TO REPLACE ONE RIM LET ALONE 2 AND IN A PERIOD OF 2 MONTHS. I THINK SOMEONE NEEDS TO LOOK INTO THIS. THIS IS NOT ONLY EXPENSIVE BUT EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. I THINK THAT THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD HAVE A RECALL ON THESE RIMS AND REFUND THE CUSTOMERS THAT HAD TO PAY OUT OF POCKET.*AK

THE MANAGER CONTACTED THE WARRANTY AND WITHOUT HEARING AN EXPLANATION OR CLOSELY INSPECTING THE CAR THE DECIDED THAT IS NOT GOING TO BE FIXED. *AK

THE MANUFACTURER INFORMED ME THAT THE RIM WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. THE COST OF REPLACING THE RIM WAS A LITTLE OVER $200.00. WHEN THIS HAPPENED 2 MORE TIMES, I HAD DIFFERENT FEELINGS ABOUT IT. PRIOR TO THIS, I HAVE NEVER HAD TO REPLACE A RIM IN MY LIFE. ONE TIME, WHEN I BROUGHT THE CAR BACK TO THE MANUFACTURER, THE SERVICE SHOP TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS A GIRL WHO JUST CAME INTO THE SHOP WHO BLEW OUT 2 RIMS ON HER VEHICLE. IT IS APPARENT THAT THIS IS A MANUFACTURER'S EFECT. THIS IS NOT ONLY EXPENSIVE, BUT IT IS ALSO DANGEROUS. I HAVE REACHED OUT TO MITSUBISHI SEVERAL TIMES ABOUT THIS WITH VERY LITTLE SUCCESS.*AK

NEVER HAD A PROBLEM. I DON'T RACE AND DON'T BURN THE CLUTCH. AT ABOUT 25K MY CLUTCH STARTED TO GO OUT. NOW THE CAR WON'T MOVE AT ALL. I KNOW A LOT OF OWNERS, ESPECIALLY WITH THE V6 HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. AND SPENDING $1500 ON A CLUTCH THAT WILL WEAR OUT IN TWO YEARS IS NOT AN OPTION. MY HOPE IS THAT MITSUBISHI WOULD RECALL THIS DEFECTIVE CLUTCH AND REIMBURSE THOSE WHO HAD TO PAY OUT OF THEIR OWN POCKET FOR A DEFECTIVE PRODUCT THAT SHOULD NEVER EXIST ON A BRAND NEW CAR. PLEASE STOP THIS PROBLEM AS I KNOW ONLY MORE PEOPLE WOULD HAVE TO PAY A LOT OF MONEY ON A STILL DEFECTIVE CLUTCH. MAKE THEM STOP PLEASE! *JB

I haven't had any problems with this car, just the usual oil changes and maintenance. Everything works excellently. It's definitely worth the money I spent on it and it's the best sporty car I've driven.
-
I'm a young person and you know what? I absolutely love this car! If it were a low ride, I couldn't even begin to describe how much I would love it.
-
This car is amazing! It's great to drive, looks fantastic, and is a lot of fun, all without breaking the bank. I've even had people ask to ride in the back seat just to experience it! It has plenty of power for hills and highway driving, and the standard transmission shifts very smoothly. The top is also easy to put up and down. Plus, it's incredibly reliable and handles well even in bad weather. While the initial 0-60 time isn't the best, it still outperforms other sports cars that cost much more. Overall, this car is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a fun and affordable ride!
-
I'm so glad you're happy with your car!
-
This car is sleek and stylish, making it a joy to drive and very comfortable. While the mileage is good, it may not meet the expectations of those looking for a small car. However, it has proven to be very reliable, even in cold and snowy conditions.

The car can be enjoyable to drive, but making a u-turn can be a bit of a challenge. If you ever need to make a tight turn into a parking spot or at an intersection, you may need to back up. Additionally, the spoiler in the rear window (which is already small) limits the visual, and the interior lighting could be improved. The boot is more of a showpiece than a practical feature.
Alfonso Brakus 2024-05-03
In the first two years of owning this new vehicle, I've unfortunately experienced a few issues. The horn, headlight hard wiring, convertible roof motor, radio, and a speaker have all needed repairs. Additionally, the headlight hard wiring needs to be replaced again. It's been a bit disappointing, but I'm hopeful that these issues will be resolved soon.
Cordelia Parisian 2024-04-06
Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my third convertible car. I've had two Sebring Convertibles before this one, but unfortunately, this car has given me some trouble. I've had to spend quite a bit of money on repairs, including a rear differential pressure sensor short, a blown center speaker, a new set of rims, and a replaced fog lamp. I even had to replace the instrument panel and center stack light. It's been a bit frustrating, especially since the rear differential pressure sensor blew due to a mistake made by a Mitsubishi dealer mechanic who left off the radiator hose. Despite these issues, I'm still enjoying the car and hope to have better luck with it in the future. Thanks for listening!
Brown Stiedemann 2024-04-06
The vehicle had been performing well until recently when it had to be towed by AAA to the Mitsubishi dealer in Coconut Creek due to a wiring issue with the ignition. The dealer informed me that there were several recalls, some of which were major, that I was not aware of at the time of purchase. Despite this setback, I am confident that the issue will be resolved and the vehicle will continue to perform well. I will keep a close eye on any future recalls and address them promptly.
Camren Metz 2024-03-12
The car has several design defects, including issues with the rear axle bushings, front brakes, and rims. Despite these problems, the manufacturer has not taken responsibility for them. It is disappointing to see the number of recalls and TSBs on the NHTSA site, which reflects poorly on the quality of this car. Additionally, the car has experienced a significant drop in depreciation. As a result, I will not be purchasing a Mitsubishi again.
