2009 Lexus Gx470 problems
The Lexus GX (Japanese: レクサス・GX, Hepburn: Rekusasu GX) is a mid/full-size luxury SUV sold in North American and Eurasian markets by Lexus, a luxury division of Toyota. The GX is based on the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, from which it derives its off-road capability. Lexus introduced the first generation, known as the GX 470 in 2002, and subsequently became the third SUV to enter the Lexus lineup. A full-time four-wheel drive system is standard with low-range gearing. The 4.7-liter V8 engine in the GX 470 was the same as used on the larger LX 470. The firm next introduced the second-generation model in 2009, badged GX 460 to reflect the switch to a 4.6-liter V8 engine. Lexus later released a lower displacement GX 400 in 2012 for the Chinese market, with a 4.0-liter V6 engine. The third-generation model introduced in 2023 uses the GX 550 moniker with a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 engine and GX 550h with a turbocharged hybrid electric 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine.
As of 2024, the GX is positioned between the larger LX or TX and the smaller RX. Though it is thought the GX has always been larger than the RX, from 2015 to 2022, the RX is slightly longer and slightly wider than the GX and therefore the GX was considered smaller. All GX production has occurred at the Tahara plant in Japan, alongside the Land Cruiser Prado and the export-minded Toyota 4Runner.
Some countries classify the GX as a full-size vehicle (e.g., Australia), while some classify it as a mid-size vehicle (e.g., US), depending on local regulations.

How long does a GX470 engine last?
This engine/power train will literally last forever if you properly maintain and correct issues when they occur. Now... if you went 150,000 miles just changing the oil&filter every 3-5k and the air filter every now and then.
What is the mileage on a 2009 GX470?
Its huge V-8 engine humbled hills; the full-time four-wheel drive left lesser cars in the dust. Its gas mileage was a reflection of that powerful engine, but really, it wasn't as bad as I expected with its EPA-estimated 14/18 mpg city/highway.

I can't express enough how much I love this truck! It's an exceptional piece of machinery that will make you question why you ever drove a 4runner. The ride is incredibly smooth and the interior is plush and luxurious. It's so quiet too! As many have mentioned, there are a few areas that could be improved, but that's the beauty of owning one. You know that in just a few years, they'll release a new model. I'm absolutely thrilled with my decision to trade in my RX350 for this. It's much roomier, the gas mileage isn't too different, and it's just a more solid vehicle. This is truly an outstanding product!

From the day you purchased your 2009 GX 470 with 36,000 miles, you have loved it. The guys at the dealership call it the 'tank'. You were involved in a 4 car pile up on a bridge, but your Lexus GX470 was the only vehicle that was able to drive away from the scene. It's clear that you really love your GX470!

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with you. I used to drive a 2006 Acura MDX, but recently I decided to take a look at Lexus. I must say, the GX470 drives like a gem! The ride is incredibly smooth and I couldn't be happier with my decision.

I hope this message finds you well! I just wanted to share my personal experience with my GX that I purchased 3 years ago from Florida. It was in great condition with low mileage and I have had no issues with it since. I am a member of GXOR on Facebook and have noticed that many of the members use their GXs as daily drivers, with some even modifying them into off-road rigs. It's great to see that these vehicles are so reliable and versatile! Thank you for taking the time to read my message.

We purchased this car in November, just before Thanksgiving, but I have to admit that I'm not entirely satisfied with it. We compared it to the Tahoe and Escalade and ultimately chose the Lexus due to its high resale value. However, I find the lack of trunk space with the third row folded up and the bulky 4WD shifter to be quite frustrating. Most manufacturers have moved to a touch-button 4WD system, but Lexus has opted to keep the shifter, which takes up a significant portion of the center console. Additionally, the positioning of the shifter and 4WD controls makes it difficult to reach the heated seat controls, which can be quite inconvenient. Lastly, the transmission leaves something to be desired, as it shifts into a higher gear as soon as I begin to accelerate. Despite these issues, I'm hopeful that we can find a way to make it work for our needs.

I understand that some people may find these cars overly complex, but in my experience, they drive well for a heavy SUV and have a better ride than most. The engine has decent power, although it may be a bit expensive at the pump. While some may find the suspension system to be over the top, there are aftermarket options available for those who prefer a different setup. It is true that the engine has a reputation for going many miles, but like any car, it can have its issues. However, these issues can be resolved with proper maintenance. While the cars may be heavy, they still perform well as 4X4s. It is important to note that like any car, rust can be an issue in certain areas. Overall, I have had positive experiences with Lexus SUVs, but I understand that they may not be for everyone.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with you about our car search. We had an old Ford Expedition (Eddie Bauer 2003) and we were looking to downsize. After shopping around for a while, we finally found the GX470. It was the perfect size for us and had great four-wheel drive capabilities, which was important to us. Plus, it's built in Japan, so we knew we could count on its reliability. However, I did find that the interior was a bit lacking. The seats were too small for me (I'm almost 6 feet tall), and the driver's compartment felt a bit cramped. But overall, we're really happy with our purchase! Thanks for listening.
