1990 Dodge Daytona problems
The Dodge Daytona is an automobile which was produced by the Chrysler Corporation under their Dodge division from 1984 until 1993. It was a front-wheel drive hatchback based on the Chrysler G platform, which was derived from the Chrysler K platform. The Chrysler Laser was an upscale rebadged version of the Daytona. The Daytona was restyled for 1987, and again for 1992. It replaced the Mitsubishi Galant-based Challenger, and slotted between the Charger and the Conquest. The Daytona was replaced by the 1995 Dodge Avenger, which was built by Mitsubishi Motors. The Daytona derives its name mainly from the Dodge Charger Daytona, which itself was named after the Daytona 500 race in Daytona Beach, Florida.
History
The Daytona originally used the 2.2 L Chrysler K engine in naturally aspirated or turbocharged form. Power outputs are 93 and 142 hp (69 and 106 kW) respectively. The 100-horsepower (75 kW), 2.5-litre K engine was added for 1986. In 1985, the 2.2-L Turbo I engine's horsepower was increased to 146 hp (109 kW). The 1984 Daytona was available in three trim lines: standard, Turbo and Turbo Z. Total production was 49,347. The Daytona Turbo was on Car and Driver magazine's 10Best list for 1984. Both the Daytona and Chrysler Laser were available with the Chrysler electronic voice alert system through 1987. A performance oriented "Shelby" version of the Daytona was introduced in 1987.
1984
The Daytona debuted with a 142 hp Turbo I motor. Many Turbo Z models were produced and were more luxurious than other years due to their use of Mark Cross leather, light up speakers, and rear amplifier switches. These options were dropped after 1984.

This car is amazing! I had a minor idle problem when I bought it, but it was an easy fix - just had to clean out a vent in the oil pan. It's incredibly reliable and many people have gotten over 200,000 miles out of the V6 engine :). Even during a -20 weather spell, it only took a couple of tries to start. The handling is fantastic and it accelerates really well. While it may be a bit challenging to find body kits or engine mods, they are out there. The interior is great too, especially the front seats which have plenty of leg room. The rear seats could use some improvement, but overall this car is a great choice!

A 5-star safety rating - without airbags! Your Daytona sounds like an amazing car! It's impressive that it starts up in any weather and handles corners with no body roll. The turbo sounds like it's still going strong too. It's a shame that parts for it are no longer available, but it's great to hear that it has served you so well over the years. It's clear that your Daytona holds a special place in your heart as your first and best car. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

Daytona's are a fantastic choice for a high school student car. They are easy to fix and have a great reputation for quality. You won't regret investing in one!

You made an excellent choice by ordering this car new from the dealer with every option available. It is truly the most reliable car you have ever owned. The 5-speed transmission has proven to be trouble-free, and the V6 engine performs exceptionally well without any signs of quitting. This car is perfect for Northeastern winters, making it an excellent 'snow car'. You can rest assured that this car was built to last, so forget about any 'initial quality' assessments.

I've been the proud owner of a 1988 Daytona Shelby Z since the day before Thanksgiving in 1987. Four years ago, I stumbled upon a 1990 Daytona ES with a 3.0 V6 engine. It only had 70,000 miles on it and looked fantastic, complete with an automatic transmission and air conditioning. Now, I have two Daytona's in my garage, and they both look and run great despite being over/under 30 years old. The 3.0 engine is a powerhouse with plenty of torque, but the valve seals are a well-known issue. Frequent oil changes help with the smoking issues they are known for. The handling is superb, and I always get compliments on them (you hardly ever see one of these anymore). I mostly drive them for pleasure, and they are both bright red. The Shelby has leather interior, and the ES has cloth. Both have 4-wheel disk brakes (pretty modern back in the late 80s), and they are relatively easy to work on and maintain. If you can find one, they are a lot of fun.

I have owned a 90 Daytona for 12 years and have faced numerous mechanical issues, including problems with the door handles, pop-up headlights, suspension, and more. However, I am confident in my ability to handle these issues and have gained valuable experience in maintaining my vehicle.

I purchased my car for $1000 with 150000 miles and unfortunately, within 8 months, I experienced multiple issues including engine failure, transmission problems, two clutch replacements due to a snapped bolt, flywheel malfunction, drive axle issues, subframe corrosion, and a broken frame while driving on the highway causing the wheel to detach from the car. Additionally, the carburetor was damaged and the heads were gummed up, resulting in a fuel economy of only 4MPG. Despite my efforts, this car was unreliable and cumbersome. As a result of my experience, I have decided not to purchase a Chrysler vehicle again.
