1991 Mazda Navajo problems
The Mazda Navajo is a mid-size SUV manufactured by Ford Motor Company for the Japanese automaker Mazda, and is a rebadged version of the first generation Ford Explorer. It was Mazda's first SUV, and was offered with a choice of rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive.
The Navajo won the 1991 Motor Trend Truck of the Year award, but because of its Explorer origins, its reputation deteriorated amid the Firestone and Ford tire controversy.
Differences
The Navajo featured a few minor changes from the Explorer it was based on. It got a revised front fascia, new taillamps and wheels, and the bumpers were painted dark gray (resulting in the deletion of all chrome trim). The interior was largely shared between the two model lines, with the Navajo receiving its own lettering for the instrument panel (in line with other Mazda vehicles), and Mazda lettering was added to the Ford steering wheel hub.

Common 1991 Mazda Navajo problems
The 1991 Mazda Navajo is a compact SUV that has been known for its reliability and towing capabilities. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems reported by owners. This article will explore these issues in detail, drawing from the complaints and experiences of 1991 Mazda Navajo owners.
- Fuel Tank Damage and Fire Risk
One of the most serious problems reported with the 1991 Mazda Navajo is the risk of fuel tank damage, which could lead to fuel or vapor leakage and a potential fire hazard. This issue is a result of the fuel tank's susceptibility to damage during rear-end collisions or when using a bumper-mounted trailer hitch ball. If you own a 1991 Mazda Navajo, it is crucial to have the fuel tank inspected for any signs of damage and to address the issue promptly to prevent any safety risks.
- Brake System Issues
Some 1991 Mazda Navajo owners have reported issues with the brake system, particularly the master cylinder separating from the vacuum booster when the brakes are applied. This can lead to the service brakes not fully activating, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash or loss of control. If you experience any issues with your brakes, it is essential to have them inspected and repaired by a professional as soon as possible.
- Transmission and Drivetrain Problems
Several owners of the 1991 Mazda Navajo have reported problems with the transmission and drivetrain, including difficulty shifting gears, slipping, and excessive noise. These issues can lead to poor performance and decreased fuel efficiency. Regular maintenance and inspection of the transmission and drivetrain components can help identify and address these problems early on.
- Air Fuel Mixture Issues
Some 1991 Mazda Navajo owners have experienced issues with the air-fuel mixture, which can cause the engine to run roughly or stall, particularly when taking off from a stop. Regular maintenance and cleaning of the throttle body and air intake system can help prevent these issues.
- Interior and Exterior Accessories
A few 1991 Mazda Navajo owners have reported issues with interior and exterior accessories, such as the armrest breaking or the 4WD system failing. While these issues may not pose a significant safety risk, they can affect the overall functionality and comfort of the vehicle. Regular inspection and maintenance of these components can help identify and address any potential issues before they become more serious.
In conclusion, the 1991 Mazda Navajo is generally considered a reliable and capable compact SUV. However, like any vehicle, it can experience common problems that may affect its performance, safety, and comfort. Regular maintenance, inspection, and cleaning of the vehicle's components can help identify and address these issues early on, ensuring a safe and enjoyable driving experience.

I think you have a great truck! It's awesome that it gets you and your friends around all the time. Not only does it look nice, but it also drives great and is awesome on gas. Plus, it's fun to drive! Sounds like it's your best truck yet.
-
You have a fantastic truck! It has fast acceleration and stops quickly with very little lockup. It's also a great 4x4 in the snow. I noticed that you converted to manual locking hubs since the automatic ones weren't working well. You also get great highway gas mileage - you were able to go from Worcester MA to Portland Maine and back with just half a tank of gas! Your truck starts up every time, even in the coldest of weather (-20 F), and the heat blows nice and hot. Overall, it sounds like you have a great truck that serves you well.

Hello! I just wanted to mention that the Navajo and the Ford Explorer are very similar cars. Interestingly, the Explorer has a Consumer rating of 8.3 while the Navajo has a rating of 6.6. Despite this, I can personally attest to the Navajo's reliability. After a tuneup and some Slick50, my truck with 146,000 miles is running great!

Although my Indian friends were offended by the name of my car and even went as far as to key it, I am confident in stating that it is the worst car I have ever owned, and it does not score more than a 1 in any category. However, I am grateful that the situation did not escalate further.

It sounds like you have a great truck! Even with 230,000 miles on it, it's still going strong. Although it has had a few issues, like the 4WD not working and the armrest breaking, it's impressive that the engine still has most of its original performance. Overall, it seems like a reliable and trustworthy vehicle.

I purchased a used 91 LX in 1998 and unfortunately, it turned out to be a terrible car experience. It left me stranded so many times that I started calling it the paycheck eater. It was a total lemon and I felt relieved when I finally traded it in. I hope it was disposed of properly. Due to this experience, I have decided not to go with Mazda again.
