2017 Honda Civic problems

honda logo

The Honda Civic (Japanese: ホンダ・シビック, Hepburn: Honda Shibikku) is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1972. As of 2023, the Civic is positioned between the Honda Fit/City and Honda Accord in Honda's global car line-up.

The first-generation Civic was introduced in July 1972 as a two-door fastback sedan, followed by a three-door hatchback that September. With a 1,169 cc transverse engine and front-wheel drive like the British Mini, the car provided good interior space despite overall small dimensions. Initially gaining a reputation for being fuel-efficient, reliable and environmentally friendly, later iterations have become known for performance and sportiness, especially the Civic Type R, Civic VTi, Civic GTi and Civic SiR/Si.

The Civic has been repeatedly rebadged for international markets, and served as the basis for the Honda CR-X, the Honda CR-X del Sol, the Concerto, the first generation Prelude, the Civic Shuttle (later to become the Orthia) and the CR-V (which, by extension, was used as the basis for the Honda FR-V).

The Civic is one of the all-time best-selling automobiles in the world, with over 27 million units sold since 1972 as of 2021.

Common 2017 Honda Civic problems

The 2017 Honda Civic has been reported to have a few common problems, primarily related to airbag lights, engine mounts, and power window switches.

  • Airbag Light Due to Failed Occupant Position Sensor: This issue has been reported by many Honda Civic owners, with the airbag light illuminating due to a failed occupant position sensor. Honda has issued recalls for some model years affected by this issue, requiring the replacement of the defective sensor, which should be covered by Honda. However, the general diagnosis of the problem can cost between $88 - $111.
  • Bad Engine Mounts Causing Vibration, Roughness, and Rattle: This problem is often reported by Honda Civic owners, with the issue typically occurring when the car is placed in reverse or drive. The replacement of the engine mount usually resolves the problem, but it's essential to verify that the issue is caused by a bad engine mount and not a broken window motor, as the latter would require unnecessary replacement and repairs.
  • Failure of Power Window Switches: Honda Civic owners have reported issues with power window switches, which may cause the power windows to stop opening or closing. This issue is intermittent and might resolve itself without any apparent reason. When taking the Civic to an auto service center, it's crucial to verify that the problem is caused by a defective switch and not a broken window motor to avoid unnecessary repairs.

In conclusion, while the 2017 Honda Civic is generally a reliable vehicle, these common problems can affect its performance and require repairs. It's essential to address these issues promptly to ensure the car's longevity and safety.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-16
  • VIN: SHHFK7H58HU
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The condensor, compressor & evapoartor core all broke down This is dangerous as this is our family vehicle and we have no A/C in the hot summer The dealer inspected the vehicle and confirmed the issue. They will only fix the first two (condensor & compressor) under warranty. They say Honda won't fix the evaporator core even though this one breaking is almost certainly a result of the condesor & compressor breaking. We believe this should also be covered under warranty. There was no warning of the issue The evaporator core costs $2k to repair and Honda refuses to help, even though the dealer let us know that this part breaking was almost certainly caused by the parts under warranty breaking down. We asked for second oppinions with other mechanics who told us the same thing.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-01
  • VIN: 19XFC1F71HE
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: I previously filed a complaint on this car about the sticky steering. I understand Honda has recalled many cars for this same problem on model years 2020-2023. Why would they not recall my 2017 civic with this very same steering issue. It IS a safety issue, especially at highway speeds.

  • Summary: The NH-788P White Orchid Pearl Paint that was given an extended warranty due to a "paint peeling problem" on the Fit and HR-V models is now affecting Civics. I currently own a 2017 Civic Hatchback with the same paint, from the same country of manufacturing origin, within the same time frame, and was never given an extension warranty and currently am being denied help. The worst paint peeling, under the trunk, is actually protected from weather ... this is easily a defect that originated from Honda. Honda is denying any responsibility at the moment, refuses to help me via phone calls or email defaulting to the response of "Your car isn't under warranty." even though they have acknowledged issues and provided coverage for different models AND Canada covers my situation unlike the USA: [XXX] Had I know about this defect with my car with an official statement from Honda, it would have impacted my choices back in 2020 and 2021. I would of sold it around 2021 or contacted Honda earlier to settle these issues that would of happened under the extended warranty if I was given one. Honda's constant inaction once again damages consumers everywhere where the repair for paint is roughly 60% of the value of the car itself ... STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-09
  • VIN: 2HGFC1F32HH
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: The current recall affecting 2022 to 2025 vehicles also affects my 2017 Honda Civic. This is also a common issue across Honda forums. My steering sticks, mostly when driving in a straight line or when at highway speeds on a slight left curve. This is especially unnerving when driving in rain and having to force the steering wheel to make slight steering adjustments. I paid to have my dealership perform a wheel alignment hoping this would correct the issue, but it did not help. I did not complain to the local dealership yet about this since the wheel alignment.

STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-10
  • VIN: 19XFC2F5XHE
  • Components: STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The paint on my Honda Civic 2017 began peeling off the back window of my vehicle starting in 2022. I've since then paid to have it repaired, but now peeling is starting to occur on other places of the vehicle, such as the front hood, the fender, and the bumper. Honda has already admitted that a manufacturing issue involving the paint on the back window has been reported. This peeling problem is becoming too expensive to handle and Honda will not extend the paint warranty beyond the 3-year time frame. This is a serious issue as having too much of the car body exposed with lead to rusting.

The problem has been reproduced by countless other civic owners within a set manufactured model years. Yes it has been inspected by a Honda dealership. No, never any warning, messages, or alerts before or during the AC failure. Also no warnings of the faulty AC system when i purchased the car from a certified Honda Dealer.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-12
  • VIN: 2HGFC1F42HH
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: The abs speed sensor on honda vehicles are placed in such a way that is breaks often. And when it breaks, it leads to multiple sensors going off which may cause the abs to lock up while braking normally, car accelerating unexpectedly. For me the speed sensor on the right wheel was broken. This lead the car to accelerate unexpectedly and then the sensors would go off. Car accelerating and braking in a weird way would definitely lead to some issues. And when you go to the dealership for this issue, first they won't be able to diagnose it. They will simple reset the codes and say uts an intermittent failure and charge you 100 dollars for nothing. Then you have to go again the other day with the same issue and then they tell you its speed sensor. I think that's a bad service and since honda knows of this beong common issue with how they have placed the sensor it should be recalled.

Negative 2017 Honda Civic car reviews

  1. Kevon Schmitt 2024-09-27

Incredible power and fuel economy. The dual zone climate control is wonderful. However, the touch screen for adjusting vents and fan speed can be difficult to use. It requires the driver's full attention and does not respond when wearing gloves. Additionally, the keyless entry key fob can be a bit of a headache, as it is not uncommon to find windows down, sunroof open, or trunk unlocked. Overall, this is an excellent car, but there are some details that could be improved.

  2. Adonis Carroll 2024-08-13

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 2017 Honda Civic. Although I've only driven it for 4,500 miles from 2017 to 2019, I've had some trouble with the heating and air conditioning. During the winter, the windows tend to frost up, which can make it difficult to see outside. And during the summer, the outside air is cooler than the inside of the car, which can be uncomfortable. While it's been a bit frustrating, I'm hopeful that I can find a solution. If you're considering buying this car, just be aware of these issues. Thanks for listening!

  3. Terry Legros 2024-08-13

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my CR-V after 16 months of ownership. Unfortunately, I've decided to trade it in due to some issues I've been having. With approximately 14,000 miles on the clock, I've been experiencing the oil dilution issue that has been affecting the 1.5 liter turbos in the CR-V's. I'm not too keen on the 'fixes' that Honda has been offering to the public. When I changed the oil last month, I found that approximately 10 ounces of fuel had mixed with the oil. That's nearly 10% of the oil volume, which is definitely not normal, even for turbo engines. Additionally, I've noticed some oil seeping from the valve cover gasket and the oil pan. There have also been a couple of electronic issues with the touch screen interface and the instrument panel. As someone who has owned many Hondas, I have to say that this is the first one that I cannot recommend. If you're in the market for a CR-V, I would suggest staying away from the 1.5 turbo. Let me know if you have any questions!

  4. Benton Rogahn 2024-05-23

I fell in love with this car immediately after test driving it. It seemed like the perfect size, had great gas mileage, stylish design, and good technology. After shopping around some more, I purchased it about a month later. Unfortunately, the car let me down, as well as the dealership. The passenger side tire popped twice within a year, causing the wheel, rim, and tire to need replacing, costing over $1200 each time. The electric windows got stuck in the winter time, and the rear lights stopped working, causing me to get pulled over. When I tried to get it taken care of, they charged me to reset the entire computer system, resulting in a pretty high bill. The build quality was embarrassing, and the road noise was unbearable. Overall, I wish I never got this car and truly hope Honda can win me over again. I warn everyone not to get fooled by the brand reputation or the attractiveness of this vehicle, as you will be disappointed. At this price point or just slightly higher, you can get a much better quality vehicle, including entry-level luxury/premium cars.

  5. Jaleel Emmerich 2024-05-06

I have owned five Civics, and while the power, ride, and steering of the latest model are a step up from the 2012 LX, I have found the front seats to be very uncomfortable, particularly on my daily 88 mile roundtrip commute. As a taller person at 6'2 and 185 pounds, the lack of lumbar adjustment on the LX seats has been a problem for me, although shorter people have tried my car with no issues. Additionally, the passenger seat and floorboard have also been a source of discomfort for my wife and son. While the materials and center console are an improvement over previous models, the cluttered gauge and inferior stereo have been disappointing. I would recommend taking this car on a long ride before purchasing, or even renting one to test it out. As much as I love Honda, I may have to look elsewhere for a more comfortable option. It is worth noting that my son has a 2007 Civic with no issues, so it may be a matter of personal preference. After developing plantar fasciitis, I found the car too uncomfortable to continue driving and gave it to my son. Since then, my back and feet have been feeling much better.

Positive 2017 Honda Civic car reviews

  1. Elwin Schinner 2024-11-21

I've owned several cars and wasn't really in the market for a new one, but when Honda offered a lease special (only $199!!!) for a 2017 Civic Si, I couldn't resist. Let me tell you, I'm extremely happy with my decision. I got it in Lunar Silver and I actually think it's a really good-looking coupe. The rear wing does interfere with rear vision a bit, but it's certainly not a deal breaker. The car is an absolute joy to drive, with great damping to soak up bumps and not be too harsh considering it's a sports car. It's quick enough to be fun, but not so quick that you're breaking the law in just 2nd gear. There is the expected turbo lag (and/or boost threshold) issue, but keep it under 3000rpm and you'll get nearly 40mpg out of this 1.5-liter engine. As with most Honda manuals, shifting gears is a joy. It's not quite as slick as a Miata or as precise as the S2000s I've owned, but it's still fun. It's not like the long, rubbery throws of VWs, BMWs, and Audis I've owned. I'm 6'1

  2. Jaren Schaden 2024-10-28

I recently traded my 2015 Honda Fit for a 2017 Sonic Grey Civic hatch and while I love the power delivery with the turbo 1.5 and the CVT transmission, there are a few things I miss about my Fit. Firstly, the seats in the Civic just aren't as comfortable as the Fit's were, which my wife agrees with. Secondly, getting in and out of the Civic can be a bit of a chore, especially as I'm not as young as I used to be. Thirdly, I've noticed some rattles in the Civic when driving on Michigan's roads, which I never experienced in the Fit. Fourthly, the Fit had less wind noise than the Civic, which is something I miss. Lastly, there are slight vibrations between 55-65mph, which concerns me as I've heard stories about Honda CVT trannys doing this. However, it's not all bad! The Civic has great fuel economy, averaging 38mpg in mixed driving, and the cargo room is fantastic. I was even able to fit a large powered recliner in the car with ease. Plus, the car looks great in Sonic grey, which is why I bought it. Overall, while I miss my Fit, the Civic has its own unique advantages and I'm happy with my purchase.

I used to own a 2012 Toyota Avalon, but I was tired of the luxury scene and wanted something more fun to drive. After reading Car and Driver's review of the Civic SI, I decided to test drive one and I absolutely loved it. The review was spot on! Although it's not a luxury car, it's a sports car that requires you to be more involved with your driving. The only option available is whether you want summer or all-season tires, with summer tires costing a little more ($300). I opted for the all-season 18By the way, I wanted to share my experience with the sedan version of this car. I have a large family and needed four doors, so the sedan was an easy choice. Surprisingly, it's only 17 pounds heavier than the coupe, which is great. The back seat is incredibly roomy, even for a tall person like me (I'm 6'4''). The 1.5L Turbo engine is impressive and delivers incredible performance. On the highway, I get at least 38 MPG even with a heavy foot (averaging 75 MPH). I do have a small suggestion for Honda - the cup holders could be deeper to accommodate larger cups like Yetis. Also, it would be great if there was an option for a leather or synthetic interior. Overall, I'm extremely pleased with my purchase and would highly recommend this car. Thanks for reading and happy driving!

I have the CVT 1.5 L turbo sedan. This car is outstanding in every way except for two things, one big and one small. The display screen, unfortunately, is just as bad as everyone is saying. It's not at all intuitive, is way too complicated, and simply has too much technology which is accessible only by staring at the screen and figuring out how to find what you want. This can be dangerous when you're driving and don't have anyone to assist you. Changing a radio station, for example, becomes more complicated than in a car with simple dials and buttons. This is a major drawback. Another drawback is that the tilt and telescopic controls are difficult to locate while driving. They're hidden away so badly that it's hard to know where they are without pulling over and looking for them. Despite these weaknesses, the car has really good power and acceleration, amazing gas mileage, and lots of room and storage space.

I'm not sure why anyone would opt for the sport or sport touring version of this hatch for a mere 6 extra horses, as it requires premium fuel for the entirety of your ownership and has inferior fuel economy. The modest increase is barely noticeable. While the exhaust setup looks nice, in my opinion, it's too aggressive-looking - that's better suited for the type R or Si. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase. The fuel economy in mixed driving is slightly below what it's rated for, but I'm hoping that will improve. Although I'm not a huge fan of the honeycomb faux vents on the rear bumper, they blend in better with the black color I chose. I love the overall design of this hatch, and while I typically prefer a good M/T over an automatic, I'm pretty impressed by the CVT on this car.
