1991 Ford Probe problems

ford logo

The Ford Probe is a liftback coupé produced by Ford, introduced in 1988 and produced until 1997. The Probe was the result of Ford's collaboration with its longtime Japanese partner Mazda, and both generations of Probe were derived from the front-wheel drive Mazda G platform that underpinned the Mazda Capella.

The Probe succeeded the Ford EXP, and the instrument cluster of the first-generation Probe and pop-up headlight mechanisms were borrowed from the FC Series RX-7.

Based on the Mazda MX-6 as a sport compact coupe, the Probe was intended to fill the market niche formerly occupied by the Capri in Europe, and it was originally intended to be the fourth generation Ford Mustang in the North American market as a direct competitor with the Acura Integra, Isuzu Piazza, Nissan 200SX, and the Toyota Celica. During that time, Ford's marketing team had deemed that a front-wheel drive platform (borrowed Mazda GD and GE platforms) would have lower costs for production, and also because the platform had been gaining popularity with consumers.

Mustang fans objected to the front-wheel drive configuration, Japanese engineering, and lack of a V8, so Ford began work on a new design for the Mustang instead. On March 17, 1997, Ford announced the discontinuation of the Probe.

Common 1991 Ford Probe problems

The Ford Probe, produced from 1989 to 1997, is known for its sporty design and handling. However, like any vehicle, it has developed a number of common issues over the years. Here are some of the most common problems with the Ford Probe, based on complaints from owners:

  1. Power Windows and Door Locks Malfunction: One common issue with the first-generation Ford Probe is the tendency for the power windows and door locks to malfunction. In some cases, the windows and locks would stop working altogether, while in other cases, they would operate sporadically. This was often caused by faulty wiring or a malfunctioning power window regulator. Replacing the regulator or repairing the wiring can often fix this issue.
  2. Engine Oil Leaks: Another problem that was common with the first-generation Ford Probe was engine oil leaks. These leaks were typically caused by worn gaskets or seals, and could lead to a loss of engine oil and potential engine damage if left unchecked. Regularly checking the engine oil level and addressing any leaks promptly can prevent this issue from becoming a major problem.
  3. Manual Transmission Problems: Some first-generation Ford Probe models experienced problems with their manual transmissions. The transmissions would often grind or fail to shift properly, especially when shifting into third gear. This issue was often caused by worn synchronizers or damaged shift forks, and could require transmission repair or replacement to fully resolve.
  4. Dashboard and Instrument Cluster Problems: Some first-generation Ford Probe models had problems with the dashboard and instrument cluster. The dashboard lights would often fail to illuminate properly or stop working altogether, making it difficult to monitor the vehicle's speed and other important metrics. Replacing the faulty bulbs or fuses can often fix this issue.
  5. Cooling System Problems: Some 1993 Ford Probe models were prone to overheating due to a malfunctioning thermostat. This issue could lead to engine damage if not addressed promptly. Replacing the thermostat and performing a cooling system flush can often fix this issue.
  6. Engine Oil Pressure Gauge Malfunction: Some 1994 and 1995 Ford Probe models had issues with the engine oil pressure gauge. The gauge would often malfunction or read incorrectly, leading to confusion about the actual oil pressure in the engine. Replacing the faulty gauge or sensor can often fix this issue.
  7. Automatic Transmission Problems: Some second-generation Ford Probe models had issues with the automatic transmission, including slipping or failing altogether. This issue was often caused by worn or damaged transmission bands or clutches, and could require transmission repair or replacement to fully resolve.
  8. Electrical System Problems: Some 1996 and 1997 Ford Probe models experienced problems with the electrical system, including issues with the alternator and battery. These issues would often cause the battery to drain quickly, leading to starting problems and other electrical malfunctions. Replacing the faulty alternator or battery can often fix this issue.

While these issues can be frustrating for Ford Probe owners, regular maintenance and prompt repairs can help keep these problems from becoming major issues. It's important to stay on top of regular maintenance tasks, such as checking the engine oil level and addressing any leaks promptly, to ensure that the vehicle continues to perform at its best.

Why did the Ford Probe fail?

By 1997, the Probe's final year, Ford sold less than 20,000 units compared to 108,000 Mustangs. Ford did such a poor job of positioning and marketing the Probe it was almost destined to fail. A third-generation Probe was planned, but that design became the early-2000s Mercury Cougar, also an unsuccessful car.

How long did the Ford Probe last?

The Ford Probe is a liftback coupé produced by Ford, introduced in 1988 and produced until 1997.

Is the Ford Probe fast?

The Probe hit 60 mph in 7.0 seconds, 0.2 quicker than the MX-6. Its quarter-mile clocking of 15.5 seconds at 89 mph also edges out the MX-6's 15.6-second/88-mph performance.

Did the Ford Probe have a Mazda engine?

What happened to all the Ford probes?

Why Was the Ford Probe Taken Off the Market? By 1997, Probe sales had dropped to less than 20,000 as buyer interest was lured away from the coupe and towards the Mustang it was meant to replace. It also lost sales to the Thunderbird and Mazda's Miata, all of which had rear-wheel drive.

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-08-01
  • VIN: 1ZVPT20C0M5
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: I OWN A 1991 FORD PROBE. THE DRIVERS SIDE AUTO-RETRACT SEAT-BELT ASSEMBLY IS JAMMED. SEARCHING ON THE INTERNET, (AUTOZONE RECALLS AND THIS WEB-SITE FOR TWO), I FIND INTERESTING INFORMATION REGARDING THIS ISSUE. PARTICULARLY NHTSA ID # 96V172001 / FORD RECALL 96S48 THAT DESCRIBES THIS. ALSO THE LINK ON YOUR SITE TO THIS PDF (RC-96V172-NN.PDF), IS ALSO OF INTEREST. MY ISSUE / COMPLAINT IS THAT I TOLD MY LOCAL FORD DEALER AS WELL AS HAD FORD MOTOR CO. RUN MY VIN AND THEY STATED MY VIN WAS NOT PART OF THE RECALL CAMPAIGN. I DO NOTICE THAT IN THE ABOVE PDF A STATEMENT THAT ALL PROBES STARTING AS EARLY AS 1990 WITH THIS RESTRAINT SYSTEM ARE TO BE COVERED UNDER THE RECALL. THIS SYSTEM ON THIS CAR IS FAULTY. IN IOWA THERE IS A SEAT BELT LAW. ALTHOUGH I AM NOT THE ORIGINAL OWNER, I KNOW 2 OF THE 3 OTHER OWNERS OF THIS. IT HAS ONLY 88,000 MILES. REGARDLESS OF AGE OR CONDITION, I UNDERSTAND THIS SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER THE FORD RECALL CAMPAIGN AND I SHOULD BE FREE OF ANY FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM. ANY INPUT? *JB

SUGGESTED WE CONTACT THEIR PRINTING COMPANY WHO WOULD SELL US SCHEMATICS. PRINTING COMPANY HAD NO IDEA WHICH SET OF SCHEMATICS WE WOULD NEED. VEHICLES ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE WORKING HORNS FOR SAFETY REASONS. FORD WANTED TO SELL US $100 WORTH OF SERVICE TO INSTALL A $15 PART.*AK

Negative 1991 Ford Probe car reviews

  1. Linwood Kuhic 2024-09-14

I purchased my 2.2l auto-trans car in 1994 with 47k miles. I took great care of it, performing full tune-ups every 12k miles and changing the oil every 3k miles, including the timing belt and other necessary maintenance. Despite my best efforts, the Probe gave me some trouble. I had to replace both front axles twice, the transmission went out at 75k, and the a/c stopped working at 85k. Every mechanic I went to quoted me $800 or more for the repairs. When the car reached 110k miles, the engine started to wear out and the mileage decreased to 22mpg on the highway. Finally, the clearcoat began to fade and chip. In 2001, I decided to trade it in for a Dodge.

  2. Cloyd Berge 2024-04-21

Hey there! I just wanted to share with you how much I adore my Probe L. It's my little gem and I absolutely love it! This car is super fun to drive and I plan on keeping it until the end of time. It's such a unique car too, you don't see LX models on the streets anymore. How cool is that?

  3. Marcelino Wiegand 2024-02-09

It sounds like you've had a good run with your car, but it's time to move on. With 110000 miles on the clock, it's probably a wise decision to trade it in before it starts to give you any trouble. It's great to hear that you enjoyed it at first, but it's understandable that it's lost its appeal over time. Overall, it seems like it's been a reliable car for you.

Positive 1991 Ford Probe car reviews

  1. Archibald Feil 2024-11-06

This is the third probe I've had and I loved them all, but this 3.0 has to be the best. It has just enough power and rides like a dream. I am a total Ford Probe fan and would definitely buy another.

  2. Milford Stamm 2024-10-29

After reading others' experiences, I went ahead and bought my 90 with 147K on it, and have added another 9K. I replaced the plugs, wires, distributor cap/rotor, and front brakes (which were cheap!). The timing belt blew, but I should have changed it; luckily, there was no valve damage. This car has been amazingly reliable and inexpensive. The previous owner and I both use Mobil 1 oil. It's definitely the best car buy I've ever made!

  3. Guiseppe Rolfson 2024-10-13

Your 91 Probe is now 16 years old and has close to 300,000 miles on it, but it still has the original motor and transmission (auto) and runs great without any smoke. You also purchased a 97 Probe GT a few years ago because you love this car so much. It's so much fun to drive, has great styling, and is very dependable. It's still your daily driver, and you drive 150 miles each day. This car is fantastic and handles like a sports car, still turning heads. Next week, you will travel to Minnesota to pick up your new 1991 Probe LX V-6, which has only had one owner and has 26,000 miles on it with original tires. It looks like it just came off the showroom floor. You can't wait to bring her home to Colorado. Merry Christmas 2006 to you! Trust me, this is one great car to own and drive.

  4. Raymundo Zieme 2024-10-09

When I bought this car, it had 111,000 miles on it. Eight years later, it's still going strong with over 205,000 miles and no major repairs other than a timing belt and water pump. I would definitely buy it again!

  5. George Ritchie 2024-10-08

Hi there! I recently purchased a 1990 Ford Probe from a family member, but unfortunately, they didn't mention that the car had a few glitches. As time went on, I had to replace the radiator and fix the A/C, but now it's working perfectly and giving off cold air and heat. I also added some nice window tinting and new tires. After fixing most of the major problems, the car has been running smoothly ever since. I'm currently in the process of selling it, but I can confidently say that it has been a reliable car that has never left me stranded. Of course, a car like this needs to be well taken care of. Thanks for reading!
