The Subaru Forester (Japanese: スバル・フォレスター, Hepburn: Subaru Foresutā) is a compact crossover SUV that has been manufactured by Subaru since 1997. The first generation was built on the platform of the Impreza in the style of a taller station wagon, a style that continued to the second generation, while the third-generation model onwards moved towards a crossover SUV design. A performance model was available for the second-generation Forester in Japan as the Forester STi.

First generation (SF; 1997)

The Forester was introduced at the Tokyo Motor Show in November 1995 as the Streega concept, and available for sale in February 1997 in Japan, and to the US market in 1997 for MY1998. The Forester was one of the first crossover SUVs; the idea was inspired by Volkswagen (VW). It was built in the style of a station wagon, but had a taller stance, higher h-point seating, and an all-wheel drive drivetrain. Subaru advertising employed the slogan "SUV tough, Car Easy". It used the Impreza platform but with the larger 2.5-liter DOHC EJ25D four-cylinder boxer engine from the Subaru Outback, making 123 kW (165 hp; 167 PS) at 5,600 rpm and 220 N⋅m (162 lb⋅ft) of torque at 4,000 rpm.

Japan

In its domestic market, the Forester replaced the Impreza Gravel Express, known in the US as the Subaru Outback Sport. However, the Outback Sport remained in production for the U.S. market. The Forester appeared after the introduction of the Nissan Rasheen in Japan with a similar appearance, and the Forester's Japanese competitors include the Toyota RAV4, Mitsubishi RVR, and the Suzuki Grand Vitara. Because of the Forester's low center of gravity, it meets the United States federal safety standards for passenger vehicles and does not require a "risk of rollover" warning label on the driver's visor. Size- and price-wise, it fits between the shared Impreza platform and the larger Legacy.

The automatic transmissions used on AWD-equipped vehicles will normally send 60% of the engine's torque to the front wheels and 40% to the rear wheels, using a computer-controlled, continuously variable, multi-plate transfer clutch. When the transmission detects a speed difference between the front and rear axle sets, the transmission progressively sends power to the rear wheels. Under slip conditions, it can achieve an equal split in front and rear axle speeds.

When accelerating or driving uphill, the vehicle's weight shifts rearward, reducing front-wheel traction, causing the transmission to automatically send torque to the rear wheels to compensate. When braking or driving downhill, the vehicle's weight shifts towards the front, reducing rear-wheel traction. The transmission again compensates by sending torque to the front wheels for better steering control and braking performance. If the automatic is placed in reverse or first gear, the transmission divides the torque 50/50 to both front and rear wheels. The manual transmission cars are set up with a near 50/50 torque split as a base setting, and it varies from there. Essentially, manual cars are set up with more bias towards the rear than automatic cars.

Common 2008 Subaru Forester problems

The Subaru Forester 2008 is a popular compact SUV known for its smooth ride, efficient fuel use, and great visibility. However, like any other vehicle, it has its fair share of common problems. One of the most common issues reported by owners is head gasket leaks, particularly at higher mileages

. Overheating, coolant loss, and a coolant odor coming from under the hood are all signs of this problem. If left unaddressed, the engine can sustain costly damage from overheating. Therefore, it's crucial to check the coolant (antifreeze) level regularly and top it off if necessary. When changing the coolant, Subaru advises using a special cooling system conditioner; consult your local Subaru dealer for more information. Another issue is the misfiring of engines, which can be caused by fouled or worn spark plugs or old spark plug wires. Sometimes, the ignition coil pack can corrode or crack, leading to shaking, lack of power, and the Check Engine light coming on. Depending on the diagnosis, spark plugs, wires, and other parts may need to be replaced. Failed catalytic converters are also a common problem reported by many owners, causing the Check Engine light to come on with the code P0420. Some owners have opted for cheaper aftermarket parts fitted at local muffler shops. Loose exhaust heatshields can cause a rattling noise at certain RPMs, which can be fixed by re-securing the heatshields, an easy repair. Wheel bearings can also be a problem, with a humming noise that gets louder at highway speeds being the main symptom. Replacing the wheel bearing may require 2.5-3.0 hours of labor plus the part. Subaru issued a few recalls, which can be checked at the NHTSA website. The Forester offers two engines of the EJ25 family: the 173-hp 4-cylinder 2.5L SOHC and the turbo-charged 224-hp 2.5L DOHC. Both engines have a timing belt that must be replaced at recommended intervals. The turbo-charged DOHC engine requires premium gasoline. The transmission choices include a 5-speed manual with a Hill Holder clutch or a 4-speed automatic. In summary, while the Subaru Forester 2008 has its share of common problems, regular servicing and maintenance can help ensure its reliability and longevity. It's essential to address any issues promptly to prevent further damage and costly repairs.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-11-08
  • VIN: JF1SG67638H
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: The airbag on driver’s side deployed (malfunctioned)without incident while parked in my garage. It is currently at local Subaru dealer. Mechanics cannot determine what caused the malfunction. An engineer from Corporate Subaru inspected. Another team of engineers from Corporate is going to conduct a more thorough investigation once more photos of interior and exterior are provided by retailer. It is, of course, available for inspection. Fortunately, I was not driving the vehicle at the time of deployment. No one was in the car at the time of deployment. Vehicle was parked in my garage and deployed overnight. The dealer has confirmed deployment, but as stated above, has not been able to determine cause of deployment. Dealer’s mechanics and a Corporate engineer are only ones to my knowledge that have inspected the vehicle. As there was no accident, police and insurance representatives were not notified. No warning lights, messages or symptoms that I’m aware of. I, as stated, was not in the car at the time of deployment. Did not discover the deployment until the following morning when I went to garage to move the vehicle. I was shocked when I saw the airbag draped over the steering wheel and called dealership immediately. Car was towed to dealership and has been there for a month as of December 10, 2022.

  • Summary: Right front lower control arm failed due to rust (safety recall WVX34 and NHTSA campaign 11v464000). Part of arm completely detached from connection to frame. Dealer states the recall is closed and there is nothing they will do. I notified Subaru by Email last night on the day it occurred -1 Dec 2021. Have not had reply as yet. This caused uncontrollable steering as it was not controllable by the steering wheel. Fortunately this failed as I was backing out of a parking spot and not at speed on the highway. Car was not drivable. I inspected the left front control arm and it too seems to be also affected by rust.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-06-16
  • VIN: JF1SG63648G
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: I was getting on the highway in Minnesota doing 55-60 mph when the car started violently shaking and I lost steering with cars whizzing by me at 65-70+ mph. I was finally able to get the car just off the road and called for roadside assist. Once the car was left at my house I examined the right front wheel which was cockeyed to discover the lower control arm steel body had disintegrated (see photos). Looking online I discovered there had been a recall on these arms 9 years ago. I sent a message to Subaru Customer Care and received no reply. I sent a tweet on twitter to Subaru of America and received no reply. I finally called their 800 number and was told the recall had been completed on this vehicle in 2012 by putting some "rust-proofing" on the arms. They did not go through the effort to replace with the upgraded replacement part. SOA said they would not cover any repair or replacement of the lower control arms. There have to be 10s of thousands of these vehicles on the roads with arms rotting from the inside out because SOA did the recall on the cheap. The bushings and balljoint was still intact and no clunking or judder prior to the catastrophic failure. Is it going to take a death(s) to get this corrected. SOA know they should have replaced these arms and will sell you the upgraded one for around $300. No aftermarket companies are making these arms as far as I can find. Subaru admits on their own parts site the arms "do not often fail" i.e the body and instead the bushings wear out. The body of the car has very minimal rust and no signs the arm(s) would have deteriorated. I have asked SOA to replace the arms with ones that are structurally sound but think a second recall on cars that didn't get new arms may be required.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-06-04
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: jf1sg63668h
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I was driving to work and my Subaru stalled at an intersection. I restarted the car and continued to work. It is raining heavily. I arrived at work and the parking lot is full of water. I was slowly pulling up forward in the parking spot. I had my foot on the brake trying to get as far forward in the spot to avoid as much of the huge puddle in the lot as I could when suddenly the vehicle lurched forward over the concrete stop in the parking spot, onto a raised concrete sidewalk and then smashed into my work's building. It happened in a split second and I can hardly believe what has happened myself. After searching on the internet, I can see that newer models are having this problem so I came here to let someone know that at least a 2008 model had this problem too.

I HAVE CONTACTED SUBARU OF AMERICA AS WELL. THE VEHICLE HAS 90,700 MILES ON IT. I AM 6 FT 2" @ 240#'S SOLO OWNER AND DON'T ABUSE MY VEHICLE. I THOUGHT SUBARU'S WERE BETTER BUILT. IN 2014 I HAD TO REPLACE THE CYLINDER HEAD (GASKET) WHEEL BEARINGS AND BRAKES. 2015 THE COMPETE SUSPENSION WAS REPLACED IN 2010 UNDER ORIGINAL WARRANTY THE SWITCH FOR MOON ROOF AND THEN 2 MONTHS LATER THE MOTOR FOR THE MOON ROOF WAS REPLACED. Negative 2008 Subaru Forester car reviews

Overall, the car was in good condition and I got a great purchase price. The team at Baker Chrysler Jeep were incredibly friendly and helpful. I would definitely consider buying another vehicle from them in the future. While there are a few things that need fixing, such as the CD player not working and the back panel of the lift gate rattling, the car is otherwise in good shape. I've only had it for a month so far.

I recently bought my first brand new vehicle and I absolutely love it! While I haven't had it long enough to comment on the gas mileage, it's already a huge improvement from my old car which only got 15 miles per gallon. The SUV handles really well and my kids are thrilled with it. It's also very spacious - even my husband, who is a big guy at 350 pounds, fits comfortably. I would definitely recommend this vehicle to anyone!

Settling down doesn't mean slowing down. You'll love the new toy! I had an '02 Tacoma Limited and traded up for it, and I have no regrets. It has great performance and power when you need it, despite its tame looks. It's a great choice!

  2. Kendall Barton 2024-10-16

I have driven 500 miles on my new Forester and I absolutely love it! The power is great, and I'm getting 25 MPG even before the break-in period. The handling is quick and sure, and the hill holder function works seamlessly. The clutch and shift are the smoothest I've ever experienced, making it a pleasant and easy manual to drive. The ride is comfortable, and the heated seats are a nice touch. The moon roof is awesome, and the stereo with 6 CDs is a great feature. While the ride can be a little hard over washboard pavement, it handles RR tracks with ease and takes corners and clover leafs like a champ. It's like an undercover sports car dressed up as a little SUV, perfect for winter. The PZEV rating is a nice bonus for those concerned about global warming. I will definitely re-rate at 5K and 10K.

  3. Rory Conn 2024-10-07

I recently switched from my '04 Volvo XC70 to an '08 Forester and I couldn't be happier with my decision. The Subaru feels much more in tune with the road and is easier to maneuver, especially when parallel parking. My daughter even commented that it feels like driving a go cart! My wife has owned two Foresters in the past, both base models, but I am thrilled that I decided to upgrade to the Premium package. With its carrying capacity of a small van, it's the perfect no-nonsense and highly competent runabout. I'm already looking forward to passing it on to my wife in two years when I upgrade again!

  4. Reilly Marks 2024-09-12

This is my first Subaru and I'm absolutely loving this little SUV! It has great pickup and feels surprisingly roomy inside. Plus, it's a breeze to park. I was thrilled with all the safety features - they make me feel so secure on the highway, even in heavy traffic. I'm really looking forward to testing it out in the snow! I also appreciate the convenient cup holders in the doors and the comfortable interior. Although I've only had it for a month, I'm optimistic that it will be reliable. And since there aren't many of them where I live, it feels extra special!

  5. Trace Harvey 2024-09-09

The bulletin for PZEV models at the shop indicates that ethanol in the gas can cause a rough idle and noise during cold starts. As all gas in this area contains ethanol, it is not surprising to experience this issue. While I have owned many cars, I have not encountered this specific problem before. It would be reasonable to expect Subaru to address this issue and find a solution.
