The Volkswagen Atlas is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured by the German automaker Volkswagen since 2017. Developed mainly for the North American and Chinese market, the vehicle is based on the Volkswagen Group MQB platform. Outside the US, Canadian, and Chilean markets, the vehicle is marketed as the Volkswagen Teramont. It is positioned above the long-wheelbase Tiguan and below the smaller but more upmarket Touareg.

Overview

Marketed as the Atlas in North America, Chile, and Israel, the vehicle is known as the Teramont elsewhere, including the rest of the Middle East Africa, as well as in Mexico, Russia, Colombia and China, where production in Ningbo began in 2017. For markets outside China, the Atlas/Teramont is produced in the Chattanooga plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, United States.

The vehicle features a transverse mounted four-cylinder or Volkswagen's VR6 engine. Up to the introduction of the China-only Viloran, the Atlas was the largest vehicle produced on the Volkswagen Group MQB platform.

Common 2023 Volkswagen Atlas problems

The 2023 Volkswagen Atlas is a midsize SUV that has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the engine and electrical systems.

One of the most common problems with the 2023 Volkswagen Atlas is engine failure, which can be caused by damaged engine connecting rod bearings. This issue can result in engine failure and a stall, increasing the risk of a crash. If the engine failure causes an oil leak, it can also increase the risk of a fire. This problem affects certain 2021-2023 Audi Q5 Sportback, Q5, 2022-2023 Volkswagen Atlas FL, and Atlas Cross Sport vehicles.

Another common problem with the 2023 Volkswagen Atlas is a brake fluid leak, which can increase the distance required to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash. This problem affects certain 2023 model year Atlas FL and Atlas Cross Sport vehicles.

The 2023 Volkswagen Atlas has also been reported to have issues with the electrical system, particularly with the touch screen and dashboard behind the steering wheel. These electronic systems have been known to go completely black for 10 seconds, dropping calls, stopping music, and making it impossible to see any of the dashboard items behind the steering wheel. This problem has been reported by a user who had just purchased a 2023 VW Atlas.

In addition to these specific problems, the 2023 Volkswagen Atlas is expected to be less reliable than the average new car, based on data from 2021 and 2022 models and the Volkswagen brand scores.

It is important to note that these problems are based on complaints from owners of the 2023 Volkswagen Atlas and may not be representative of all vehicles in this model year. However, they do provide a useful indication of the common problems that owners have experienced with this vehicle.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-01
  • VIN: 1V2JP2CA7PC
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I bought my car about 5 months ago. 3 weeks ago while merging onto the beltway, MY CAR SHUT OFF. I took it to the dealership and they kept it 9 days. They did absolutely NOTHING. I contacted corporate they are doing NOTHING. this has happened twice. It's an intermittent issue and all VW has to say is that "since there is no fault code and they cannot duplicate the issue" there's nothing they can do. Online I've found several others with the same issue. I sent screenshots and links to YouTube videos of several others with the SAME issue and they still do not care. I told them what other dealers did to fix this safety issue and they won't do anything, even though the car is under warranty. They told me the car is fine even though I was nearly in a 4 car accident. This is a MAJOR safety issue in VW cars. My car note is $950 and I don't feel safe driving my car.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-31
  • VIN: 1V2KR2CA6PC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: There have been issues with my control panel/radio multiple times since purchasing this vehicle May 2023. At least twice, the control panel went black while I was driving, or backing, and would only reset after placing car in park and turning car off and back on. The issue was reported to dealer who said they couldn't recreate it and the system was up to date, so no help/fix. These occurred before the 10k mile service at dealership. A different time, the radio went silent and the control panel froze. The functionality only returned after doing a "hard reset" , as suggested in an online forum. Turning the vehicle on and off did not help. There was at least one other instance when the sound and functionality of the radio/media options completed shut off for several minutes before resetting itself while I was driving and unable to pull over to turn the vehicle on/off.

  • VIN: 1V2FE2CA6PC
  • Components: ENGINE

Second occurrence parking and while pulling in the engine stalled while moving and had to stop, park, and restart engine. No warning lights on dash. Dealership unable to reproduce. POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-25
  • VIN: 1V2FE2CA9PC
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: At approximately 8500 miles the car started randomly stalling, maybe once or twice a week. Now at 9600 miles it stalls every time we drive the car. This is not the Start/Stop system as we deactivate that when we get in the car. Typically, the car is warm, the AC is on, we have idled with the car in park then place the car in gear to drive and it dies. The dealer claims they cannot duplicate the problem. Also, the throttle is very non-linear. One time you push the throttle a little and the car takes off slamming you back in the seat. The next time you can push the throttle halfway down before the car responds then it just slowly accelerates. This problem has not been brought to the attention of the dealer yet but will upon the next appointment. This is very dangerous as other drivers are expecting you to move but you have to put the car in park and restart it. This could get someone killed.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-22
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • VIN: 1V2KE2CA7PC
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: On [XXX] I was driving approximately 30 mph on a sunny, 83F day. There were no other vehicles around me, no pedestrians, no bicycles, no animals, etc. I was traveling south on a straight section of the road when my car came to an abrupt and complete stop. The car's automatic braking system was engaged without any prior warning. The car went from 30mph to 0 mph instantly. There was a loud beep, the red ABS indicator light came on, the wipers started operating involuntarily. The force of the momentum cause items to fly forward in the car. The seatbelt locked up. The force of the stop also caused whiplash and the belt tightening caused pain to my ribs and back. I was stunned and scared. Thankfully, no cars were around me and I was going 30mph instead of 70mph when I travel the highway most of the time. If someone was behind me or I had been traveling faster, the incident could have had grave consequences. I was next to a dentist office so I pulled into their parking lot slowly. I turned the car off and looked at the exterior. There was no indication that I had struck anything and there was nothing in the road that would have set the system off. Not even a leaf or bug. I had received a letter 2 days prior about a class action lawsuit against VW describing this same issue going back to 2017. I looked up what to do in the situation and everything online suggested deactivating that feature on the car. I turned the car on and deactivated it. I drove 15 mph to my office 0.4 mi away because I was scared it would happen again. I called my dealership and scheduled a diagnostic appointment. They couldn't get it in until [XXX]. They have had it overnight and have pulled data from it and sent it to VW in Germany apparently. Since I deactivate the feature before each trip, the problem has not happened again for me. There are many stories of this happening online but VW hasn't issued a recall at all and says it isn't an issue. STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-16
  • VIN: 1V2JR2CA1PC
  • Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-15
  • VIN: 1V2WR2CA4PC
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The car stalls while driving. The vehicle will just shut off while trying to back up, pull into parking lots, pull away at traffic lights, and trying to turn into a roadway. It has done this dozens of times. Volkswagon has replaced the eval canister numerous times, as well as other parts. It still constantly stalls while actively driving it on the road. It is extremely unsafe. The evap canister is the known issue, but it continues to break and the stalling issue continues.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-01
  • VIN: 1V2BR2CA2PC
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The engine completely stalls while driving. It has happened many many times at various speeds and as well as in stop n go traffic. It’s happened on main highways like I-95. No check engine light or any other alerts appear. The screen says put car in “P” (park) and manually start engine. I’ve taken my car to the dealership to report the issue at my 20k miles service. They looked over the car and decided it must be the battery and replaced it. On my way home it stalled again and two more times throughout my day. I called the service department manager to tell her it’s still happening and how stressful and dangerous this is. She has asked for me to leave my car with them to try to figure out the issue. They are however well aware that’s is an issue with their vehicles. I’ve personally spoken to others who have the same vehicle having the same exact issue. These vehicles need to be recalled as soon as possible before someone gets into an accident.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-11
  • VIN: 1V2SE2CA4PC
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: This is my second Volkswagen Atlas, that has the same issues of breaks making loud squealing noise when I hit the brakes. Volkswagen changed the brakes on my 2022 Atlas, then allowed me to trade it in for a 2023 Atlas. I been having the same problem with the brakes and all the dealers says is' ( Volkswagen is aware of the brake problem and working on a solution)., however it has been a ongoing issue for over a year. Just today in Walmart parking lot located at [XXX] , I hit brakes and the brakes squeal loud, this is not just an issue because of the noise, this is a safety issue. Now the dealer is telling me the brakes are only under warranty for 24,000 miles and my car has 34,000 miles, leaving me having to try to find out what to do on my own. My car note is $914.10, I love Volkswagen, but I will never buy another one. Imagine paying $914.10 per month for a vehicle that has a safety issue and the dealer has been working on a solution for over 2 years. The break lights doesn't come on, so the dealer stated it is only a annoying sound not a safety issue, I believed these vehicles need a examination or please examine mines, because if your brakes squeals, something is wrong with the vehicle. Negative 2023 Volkswagen Atlas car reviews

  1. Lexus Dietrich 2024-08-23

I love driving Atlas. However, the factory sound system has received negative feedback from thousands of users on multiple forums. It seems that VW has not yet addressed this issue. I was considering switching to the SEL Premium with the premium fender system, but unfortunately, it seems that this system is also not up to par.

  2. Mikel Frami 2024-05-04

The driver's door has been producing a significant amount of wind noise. Despite having it inspected twice by the dealer, the noise has only slightly improved due to a faulty door seal. Additionally, there have been issues with the infotainment center and digital cockpit, both of which have malfunctioned. Despite only having the car for 4 months and driving 5K kms, VW has requested a charge for inspection. It is important to note that Toyota or Domestic brands may be a better option to consider.

  3. Claude Buckridge 2024-04-01

Although the vehicle may not have all the features that some may consider essential, it still offers great value for its price. It is important to note that the navigation system is only available in certain levels of the same models, but it can still be accessed through a dedicated button. While there may have been some misunderstandings with the dealer, it is important to remember that the vehicle cannot be returned after purchase. Overall, this vehicle is a solid choice for those looking for a reliable and affordable option.

  4. Raphael Hilpert 2024-02-19

I love the aesthetics of the New Atlas and the interior is well designed and spacious. However, I did notice that it wasn't as smooth to drive as I had hoped, and there was a decent amount of road noise when accelerating onto the highway.

Positive 2023 Volkswagen Atlas car reviews

  1. Alberto Predovic 2024-11-28

Hi there! You've given us everything we could ask for!

  2. Junior Ledner 2024-11-08

This is actually my second Atlas! The first one unfortunately got totaled in an accident (not my fault), but I loved it so much that I decided to get another one. I'm now driving a 2023 Atlas Sel premium R line and I love it just as much as the first one. I did a lot of research and looked at other brands like Mercedes, BMW, and Audi, but I'm really happy with the technology that VW offers at this price point.

  3. Joan Rosenbaum 2024-11-03

You have a lot of space, great technology, and it's quite agile for its size.

We absolutely love our 2022 Atlas R-Line! After three years of driving it, we have no major complaints. It's just the right size - not too small and not too big - and the height off the ground is perfect. The heated and cooled seats for both front seats and second row are a luxury that we never want to give up. The Atlas has plenty of room and is stylish, with a design that we think will still look great in 10 years. We were initially considering a Toyota Highlander, but the new models' styling and lack of passenger side comforts turned us off. The Atlas is loaded with tech, including an overhead camera to help with parking and collision avoidance. The only downside is the gas mileage on our V-6, but it's tolerable and the vehicle has plenty of power when we need to accelerate or pass someone. Overall, we're extremely happy with our Atlas and can't wait to see how it holds up over the next three years!

Congratulations on your Pyrite Silver SUV! It looks outstanding and has great features that provide comfort. It's wonderful that you bought this for your wife's retirement. The SUV is luxurious and beautiful from every angle. The car is very quiet and the exterior lighting is impressive, including the courtesy lighting on the door and hatch. Although you have driven less than 1000 miles, it has already exceeded your demands. You considered other great options in the 3 row, v6, SUV category such as Cadillac, Honda, and Kia, but the roominess and aesthetics of this SUV won you over.
