2010 Volkswagen Golf problems
The Volkswagen Golf is a compact car/small family car (C-segment) produced by the German automotive manufacturer Volkswagen since 1974, marketed worldwide across eight generations, in various body configurations and under various nameplates – including as the Volkswagen Rabbit in the United States and Canada (Mk1 and Mk5), and as the Volkswagen Caribe in Mexico (Mk1).
The original Golf Mk1 was a front-engined, front-wheel drive replacement for the air-cooled, rear-engined, rear-wheel drive Volkswagen Beetle. Historically, the Golf is Volkswagen's best-selling model and is among the world's top three best-selling models, with more than 35 million units sold as of 2019.
Initially, most Golfs were 3-door hatchbacks. Other variants include a 5-door hatchback, estate (Variant, from 1993), convertible (Cabriolet and Cabrio, 1979–2002, Cabriolet, 2011–present), and a Golf-based saloon, called the Jetta, Vento (from 1992) or Bora (from 1999). The Golf covers economy to high-performance market segments.
The Golf has won awards, including the World Car of the Year in 2009, with the Mk6 and in 2013 with the Mk7. Along with the Renault Clio and the Vauxhall Astra, the Golf is one of only three cars to have won European Car of the Year twice, in 1992 and 2013. The Golf has made the annual Car and Driver 10Best list multiple times. The Mk7 won the Motor Trend Car of the Year award in 2015, and the Mk1 GTI also won the award in 1985. The Mk4 won for the best-selling car in Europe in 2001.

Common 2010 Volkswagen Golf problems
The Volkswagen Golf 2010 is known for several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are some of the issues in detail:
- Rear Wheel Bearing Housing Issues: Some Volkswagen Golf 2010 models may have rear wheel bearing housings that were incorrectly manufactured, leading to premature failure.
- Passenger Airbag Deployment: There have been reports of passenger airbags not deploying as intended in certain Volkswagen Golf 2010 models.
- Front Brake Disc Thickness: Some Golf 2010 models may have front brake discs that are not of the correct thickness, which can affect braking performance.
- Head Restraint Security: In some cases, the head restraint may not be securely attached, which can increase the risk of injury in the event of a collision.
- Rear Seat Bench Welded Connection: There have been instances where the welded connection of the rear seat bench was not correctly performed, potentially affecting the seat's structural integrity.
- Housing Bolts on the Camshelf Adjuster: The housing bolts on the camshelf adjuster may come loose, which can lead to issues with the engine's timing.
- Infotainment System Glitches: The touchscreen infotainment system in some Volkswagen Golf 2010 models may be slow to respond or fail to respond at all. A software update may fix the problem.
- Faulty Crash Sensors: Volkswagen issued a recall for faulty crash sensors in the airbag and restraint system in some Golf 2010 models. These sensors were replaced to ensure the safety of the vehicle.
- DSG Automatic Gearbox Issues: The Direct-Shift Gearbox (DSG) automatic gearbox in the Volkswagen Golf 2010 has had some reliability concerns, and if it fails, the repair costs can be high.
- High Oil Consumption: Some petrol engines in the Volkswagen Golf 2010 may consume more oil than expected, so it's essential to check the oil level regularly.
- Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve Failure: Exhaust gas recirculation valves are known to fail on diesel models, often costing over £700 to repair.
- Dual Mass Flywheel Issues: Dual mass flywheels can also be problematic in the Volkswagen Golf 2010, particularly in diesel models.
When considering a Volkswagen Golf 2010, it's essential to be aware of these common issues and ensure that any potential vehicle has been well-maintained and serviced according to the manufacturer's guidelines.

Yes, it's the Volkswagen Golf, the 'hear hooves, think horses' of family hatchbacks. It's an industry benchmark. A vanguard in the battle against the overdone, overblown and ostentatious. AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS,SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-07-09
- VIN: Wvwdb7aj9aw
- Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS,SEATS
- Summary: Shortly after acquiring this car, an airbag light appeared on the dashboard after my sister adjusted the passenger side seat. The airbag indicator showed that it was off afterward, despite my sister being adequate weight to require the airbag. Continued problems ensued when the seat would show that it was occupied (airbag on and seatbelt chime when unbuckled, even though there was no one in the seat). Now this happens sporadically, and it is unknown whether the airbag will be operational or not whenever I start the car. Often, turning the car off then back on will allow for the airbag to show it is on for a passenger. I have seen in other locations online that this is an issue that has affected other people online with this model of car.

PRIORITY 1 VEHICLES ON THE NHTSA LIST INDICATE THAT FAILURE IS MORE LIKELY IN PRIORITY 1 LOCATIONS AFTER 6-9 YEARS. MY VEHICLE IS MORE THAN 6 YEARS OLD & HAS SPENT MOST OF IT'S LIFE WHERE IT WAS PURCHASED, IN VIRGINIA BEACH, VIRGINIA WITHIN A FEW MILES OF CORROSIVE SALT WATER IN THE ATLANTIC OCEAN. After searching all the other cars in its class, I have come to the conclusion that the Golf is in a class of its own. I have been driving the car for a month and a half now and I must say, I am thoroughly impressed. The styling and drivability are top-notch. I have driven 4200 miles in it, including a long road trip, and it has performed phenomenally. All driver controls are easy to use and the trip computer was a lifesaver on the road trip. I am even getting better mileage than what is average, despite driving it the way it is supposed to be driven. I couldn't ask for a better car. The only thing I have added since buying it is the adjustable armrest, which has made a huge difference in my comfort. As someone who is 6 ft and 230 lbs, the car fits me perfectly.
-
This is a fantastic car! It's spacious, enjoyable to drive, very well-built, quite speedy, and incredibly fuel-efficient. I get 43-45 mpg during my commute, mid 50's on the highway (I even got 59 mpg recently!), and mid 30's in the city. The Golf is surprisingly adept in the winter (I put snow tires on it), as it easily made it through over a foot of snow in my driveway last winter. This car never ceases to amaze me with its abilities.
-
One of the best cars out there for the money! The performance is excellent, and the gas mileage is great - I'm getting 38.5 mpg around town. The interior is top-notch, too. If you're looking for a car with great styling, an excellent interior, and awesome performance while getting great gas mileage, you should definitely give this car a try. You can't go wrong!
-
Congratulations on your new 2010 Golf TDI! From your description, it sounds like you made an excellent choice. The car has exceeded your expectations in terms of fuel economy and performance, which is fantastic to hear. It's great to have a car that is both practical and fun to drive. The build quality of the car is also impressive, making it feel solid and reliable. It will be interesting to see how the mark VI Golf performs in the long run, but for now, it seems like you have a winner on your hands.

This is my first brand new car and I'm absolutely thrilled with it! It's so much fun to drive and the ride is really solid. There are so many little things about it that I just adore, like the entertainment I get from watching people try to open the hatch. The back seats are also really spacious and easy to get into, even though it's a 2-door. And I'm getting an average of 30 mpg, which is fantastic!
Bill Becker 2024-11-11
This is a lovely little car! The interior is incredibly user-friendly, and the exterior is about as good as you can get with an economy car. However, there are a few downsides to consider. Dealers tend to mark up from MSRP because of tax credit of the TDIs. Additionally, the build quality seems to be lacking. Within 3,000 miles, it had a small oil leak which turned out to be a faulty crankshaft seal. Also, the side marker lamp went out, and the dealership (Lewisville VW) claimed something hit it, yet the lens was still intact and undamaged. I bought the car for dependable long-distance rides, but I'm having some serious doubts about it now...

I am confident in stating that the cause of the issue with my 2010 Golf TDI, DSG was due to contaminated diesel fuel. Despite having fueled my car at four different stations, the Massachusetts Division of Standards has not reported any other problems. It is disappointing that the $11,000 damage incurred is not covered by the warranty, but I am certain that I followed all instructions for operating the vehicle during the warranty period. In hindsight, I would not have purchased the TDI if I had known that there was even a remote chance of such an issue occurring.

Fit and finish is great, as with most German-made autos! It drives like a sports car, but feels like a luxury car on the inside. If you're going to buy one, you should opt for the TDI. It gets a real 48 mpg on the highway! The TDI also comes loaded. The only options I added were a moonroof and Bluetooth, which cost an extra 1200 for both. If you're thinking hybrid, take a look at this clean-burning diesel (WORLD CAR OF THE YEAR). You won't be disappointed!

The interior is nice, although there is a gap in the center console. The engine has good torque, but it runs out of steam on the top end. The ride is firm, but there is some body lean. At higher speeds on the highway (above 85), this car starts to feel a little 'floaty'. Although there were some initial quality issues, I do like this car. In fact, I thought it was nicer than the Civic or the TC I test drove. Shifting is better than some, but not as nice as my 2000 Celica, which I do miss more than I thought I would since buying the Golf. In closing, I would like to mention that the throttle by wire lacks any real feel and seems like it could be calibrated much better.

I have the cloth standard seat which are very comfortable, but unfortunately, several threads are ripping already after only 3300 miles. This is quite disappointing. I am only 190 lbs and am careful on how I get in and out since I saw this as a potential trouble spot early on. I have yet to take it to the Dealer for the 90 day checkup. If I go even very slowly over neighborhood speed bumps, there is a loud metal-on-metal bang as the suspension tops out. Additionally, I find the sunroof switch to be counter-intuitive with no obvious detent for 'closed'. On the bright side, I am currently getting 55 mpg @ 45 mph and 43 mpg @55 mph. Thank you for your attention to these matters.
