Common 2002 Saab 9-5 problems

Based on complaints from owners of the Saab 9-5 2002, several common problems have been reported:

  • Engine Problems: Oil sludge buildup has been a significant concern, leading to engine damage and failure. Turbo failure, timing chain issues, and overheating have also been reported by owners .
  • Transmission Problems: Common complaints include slipping gears, hard shifting, and torque converter issues with the automatic transmission .
  • Suspension Problems: Owners have reported worn-out shocks, struts, and bushings, resulting in excessive vibrations, noise, and a rough ride due to suspension issues .
  • Body and Exterior Issues: Rust problems, especially around the wheel arches, and paint fading or peeling over time have been noted. Additionally, some owners have faced expensive headlight replacements .
  • Valve Lifters and Electronic Problems: Faulty valve lifters and costly electronic issues have been highlighted, adding to the maintenance expenses of the car .

Is Saab 9-5 a good car?

Saab's 9-5 is a competent car with capable and secure handling. A major 2010 redesign produced a car that wasn't as well rounded as previous 9-5s. It handles fairly nimbly and has great fit and finish, but the 220-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine is noisy and a little weak for the class.

What year of Saab is the most reliable?

The Saab 900 (1994-1998) is a mid-size luxury car produced by the Swedish automaker Saab. It is the fourth generation of the Saab 900 series. Known for its Scandinavian design, innovative features, and solid build quality, the Saab 900 (1994-1998) is considered one of the most reliable Saabs in its lineup.

How reliable is a Saab car?

The 9-3 is one of the most reliable and cost-efficient vehicles in the market. Some of its issues can be tedious to deal with, but most of them are preventable and repairable. If you're thinking of buying the Saab 9-3, keep in mind the importance of proper maintenance and repair.

How long does a Saab turbo last?

Turbos are designed to last the lifetime of the vehicle (or around 150,000 miles); however, it's possible for them to wear out over time depending on how hard you drive the car and the original build quality of the turbo.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-08-10
  • VIN: YS3EB49E023
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: THE ENGINE ON MY 4 CYLINDER SAAB 9-5 (2002) HAS SUDDENLY STOPPED WHILE DRIVING AT LEAST 4 TIMES SINCE OWNING THE CAR, BOTH ON THE HIGHWAY AND IN SLOWER TRAFFIC. THE FIRST TIME I REPORTED OFFICIALLY (2007) TO THE DEALER, "NO CAUSE WAS IDENTIFIED." I NOTICED THE LAST TIME THAT IT HAPPENED (AROUND MAY 2011) THAT IT SEEMED TO COINCIDE WITH INADVERTENTLY BUMPING INTO THE IGNITION SWITCH LIGHTLY WHILE DRIVING. THE SYMPTOMS MATCH THAT OF ANOTHER OWNER'S COMPLAINT ON THIS SITE FOR THE 2002 SAAB 9-5. I EXPECTED MY CAR TO BE INCLUDED IN THE RECENT RECALL INVOLVING THE FAULTY IGNITION SWITCH BUT GOT NO NOTIFICATION. I HAVE ALSO PAID IN JUNE 2008 AND AGAIN IN OCTOBER 2009 AND JANUARY 2013 TO REPLACE/RESET A FAULTY IGNITION CASSETTE, WHICH I BELIEVE SHOULD HAVE BEEN PART OF A RECALL CAMPAIGN AND NOT CHARGED TO ME, BUT THE PARTS WERE NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. IN SUMMARY, DUE TO THE CAR SHUTTING OFF, I FEEL IT IS NOT SAFE AND THAT IT SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN THE RECENT GMC RECALL. AND THAT THE FAULTY IGNITION CASSETTE SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECALLED AND NOT REPLACED AT OWNER EXPENSE MULTIPLE TIMES. I HAVE DOCUMENTED SERVICE RECORDS OF THE ABOVE INCIDENTS. *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-07-19
  • VIN: YS3EB49E623
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: IGNITION SWITCH SHUT OFF WHILE ON A BUSY HIGHWAY TWICE! ONCE IN 2006 AND ONCE LATER ANOTHER YEAR PLUS ONCE IN A DRIVEWAY (CAR PURCHASED USED IN THE FALL OF 2005). THE SAAB SWITCH IS LOCATED IN THE CENTER CONSOLE AND IF IT IS HIT IT SWITCHES OFF AND SHUTS DOWN THE CAR, SAME AS RECALLED SWITCHES IN OTHER GM CARS. VERY DANGEROUS ON THE HIGHWAY, BUT I WAS LUCKY AND ABLE TO STEER TO THE SIDE WITHOUT A CRASH. THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN A LOCK MECHANISM TO PREVENT IT FROM HAPPENING. IT NEVER OCCURRED TO ME TO REPORT IT THOUGH IT IS DEFINITELY A SAFETY HAZARD IN A WHAT WAS AT THE TIME A GM OWNED PRODUCT. I STILL OWN THE CAR AND DRIVE IT DAILY ON THE SAME HIGHWAY, HOWEVER AM VERY MUCH AWARE OF THE ISSUE. I WASN'T AWARE OF WHAT CAUSED THE SHUT DOWN UNTIL IT HAPPENED THE SECOND TIME A FEW MONTHS AFTER THE FIRST TIME. YOU SHOULD INCLUDE SAAB IN THE RECALL OF GM PRODUCTS. *TR

  • Components: TIRES,WHEELS
  • Summary: ON FEB 20, 2013, I WENT TO GILLYS, A LOCAL TIRE COMPANY, SOLD ME TWO TIRES AND WELDED A CRACKED RIM. ON MAR 2, 2013 THE TIRE BLEW OUT AND UPON INSPECTION AT WALMART AUTOMOTIVE. IT WAS DISCOVERED THE TIRE WAS ILLEGALLY PLUGGED ON INNER WALL. THE RIM HAD RECRACKED. THIS VIOLATES 49 CFR 570.10 WHEEL ASSEMBLIES. THE COMPANY THAT SOLD ME THE FAULTY TIRES WITHOUT MY KNOWLEDGE. I BELIEVED I WAS PURCHASING TWO USED TIRES WITHOUT PLUGS, BUT RECEIVED TWO TIRES WHICH SHOULD NEVER BE ON THE ROAD. ONCE I NOTIFIED THE TIRE SHOP, THE OWNER DISPUTED THE FINDINGS DESPITE TWO LETTERS FROM SEPARATE TIRE SHOPS. *TR

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-08-01
  • VIN: YS3EB49E623
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: HELLO...I NEED TO ASK FOR YOUR HELP. I HAVE A 2002 SAAB 9-5 WHICH HAS A PROBLEM WITH THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE SEAT BELT. IT DOES NOT RETRACT AND THEREFORE THE PASSENGER IS UNPROTECTED. I KNOW THAT SAAB HAS A HISTORY OF THIS BEING A PROBLEM. MY ATTEMPTS TO GET SOME HELP FROM SAAB HAVE BEEN FUTILE. IF THIS WAS A MINOR ITEM, I WOULD JUST PAY TO HAVE IT FIXED. I HAVE BEEN QUOTED $450 TO HAVE THE SEAT BELT FIXED. I CANNOT AFFORD TO PAY THAT. ISN'T THIS THE KIND OF VERY BASIC THING THAT A VEHICLE OWNER SHOULD EXPECT WHEN THEY PURCHASE A CAR? ALSO, ISN'T THIS THE VERY BASIC KIND OF THING THAT A VEHICLE MANUFACTURER IS RESPONSIBLE FOR PROVIDING TO ITS CUSTOMERS, AT A REASONABLE COST? I EXIST ON A VERY LIMITED INCOME (SOCIAL SECURITY) AND CAN'T AFFORD TO PAY $450 TO FIX THIS. IT IS A KNOWN PROBLEM IN OTHER YEARS AND MODELS OF SAAB. CAN I ASK FOR YOUR HELP IN TRYING TO GET SAAB TO CORRECT THIS SITUATION? THANK YOU. *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-08-15
  • VIN: YS3EH49G623
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: WE HAVE A COMPLAINT REGARDING RECALL 05V399000 FOR OUR 2002 SAAB 9-5 AERO. OUR IDM SERIAL NUMBER FALLS WITHIN THOSE REQUIRED TO BE REPLACED BY THE RECALL. HOWEVER, SAAB WILL NOT REPLACE IT BECAUSE OUR VIN # DOES NOT FALL WITHIN THEIR RECALL. OUR IDM NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. THIS DOES NOT MAKE SENSE. OUR SAAB WAS DELIVERED IN GERMANY (IT IS US SPEC) TO A SERVICEMEMBER STATIONED THERE. WE BOUGHT IT USED WHILE STATIONED OVER THERE. NO RECALL NOTICES WERE SENT TO US OVER THERE. WE JUST STARTED GETTING RECALL NOTICES ONCE WE SHIPPED THE CAR TO THE STATES. WE HAD TO PROVIDE OUR CERTIFICATE OF ORIGIN TO SAAB. SAAB TOLD US THEY HAD NO IDEA OUR CAR EXISTED UNTIL WE GAVE THEM THE CERTIFICATE OF ORIGIN (WHICH SOUNDS FISHY). THIS RECALL WAS ISSUED BEFORE WE MOVED BACK TO THE STATES. OUR DEALERS SERVICE DEPARTMENT SAYS OUR IDM SERIAL NUMBER AND THE PROBLEM WITH IT FALL WITHIN THE RECALL. BUT SAAB WILL NOT REIMBURSE THEM FOR REPLACING IT. *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-02-27
  • VIN: YS3EB45E923
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: 2002 SAAB 9-5 HAS HAD FAILURE OF HEADLIGHT BULBS AT A RATE OF ONE OR TWO PER YEAR FROM THE VERY FIRST YEAR I HAVE OWNED THIS CAR. NO OTHER BULB HAS BURNED OUT IN THE PAST 8 YR. A LOCAL GARAGE MECHANIC TOLD ME IT WAS RELATED TO A FAULTY FRONT ELECTRICAL HARNESS IN THE SAAB BUT THE DEALER SAID THIS WAS NOT A RECALL, EVEN THOUGH IT HAS BEEN A PROBLEM FROM THE FIRST YEAR OF OWNERSHIP. NOW I HAVE 2 HEADLIGHT BULBS BURNING OUT WITHIN ONE DAY OF EACH OTHER -- ONE HIGH BEAM, ONE REGULAR. IS THERE A RECALL OF ELECTRICAL HARNESS ON SAABS TO CORRECT FREQUENT HEADLIGHT BULB BURNOUT? SO FAR I HAVE JUST BEEN REPLACING THE BULBS AT $50/BULB AT THE RATE OF ONE OR TWO PER YEAR. *TR

  • VIN: YS3ED58EX13
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 SAAB 9-5. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE HAS NOT EXPERIENCED ANY FAILURES AT THIS TIME WITH THE AIR BAGS; HOWEVER, HE FEELS THAT THEY WILL NOT DEPLOY DURING A CRASH. HE ALSO BELIEVES THAT THEY MAY DEPLOY WITHOUT WARNING AT ANY TIME. THE AIR BAGS ARE RUNNING THROUGH A CENTRAL RIBBON CABLE AND NOTHING ELSE CONNECTED TO THAT CABLE IS FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. THE CENTRAL WARNING LIGHT IS ILLUMINATED, WHICH COULD ALSO CAUSE THE AIR BAGS TO MALFUNCTION. THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED TWO WEEKS AGO AND THE CENTRAL WARNING LIGHT WAS ALSO ILLUMINATED AT THAT TIME. THE DEALER DID NOT DETERMINE WHAT CAUSED THE LIGHT TO ILLUMINATE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 117,000.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-05-15
  • VIN: YS3EB49E423
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: LOSS OF REVERSING LIGHTS, TRUNK OPENING WARNING LIGHT AND CRUISE CONTROL FUNCTION WITH NO INTERNAL WARNING INDICATIONS. UPON INVESTIGATION, THE CAUSE WAS THE FAILURE OF TRUNK WIRING HARNESS AT 70K MILES - 2 WIRES WERE COMPLETELY SEVERED, ALL OTHERS (6) HAD LOST INSULATION. FAILURE IS AT THE FOLDING POINT JUST PRIOR TO ENTRY INTO THE TRUNK LID. CAUSE APPEARS TO BE EXCESSIVE TIGHTNESS OF THE INTERIOR WIRES. THE RUBBER BOOT WAS ENTIRELY INTACT, SEALED TO CONNECTORS IN THE BODY AND TRUNK LID AND THERE WAS NO VISIBLE INDICATION OF THE INTERNAL FAILURE. WIRES ARE SEPARATE INSIDE THE BOOT UP UNTIL THE TRUNK LID ENTRY WHERE THEY ARE WRAPPED WITH ELECTRICAL TAPE. THIS WAS DISCOVERED ONLY DURING SERVICE, NOT REPORTED BY SELF-CHECK DISPLAY WHICH ALWAYS REPORTS LIGHT BULB OUTAGES IN TEXT MESSAGES ON THE 2 LINE SAAB INFORMATION DISPLAY (SECONDARY FAILURE). PRIOR TO DISCOVERY A NUMBER OF CARS HAD ALMOST REAR ENDED THE CAR WHEN BACKING UP (REVERSING LIGHT FAILURE WAS NOT REPORTED OR KNOWN). CORRECTED TEMPORARILY BY SPLICING IN WIRES AND HEAT WRAPPING, WAITING FOR APPOINTMENT WITH THE SAAB DEALER TO REPLACE THE HARNESS. *TR

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-10-26
  • VIN: YS3EH55G223
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS SUMMARY: DRIVING ON HIGHWAY, PRESSURE LINE FROM FUEL TANK CAME LOOSE AND STARTED LEAKING MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF GAS ALL OVER THE UNDERSIDE OF THE VEHICLE AND STREET. STREAM OF FUEL ON HIGHWAY ALERTED DRIVER. LOST UNKNOWN AMOUNT OF GALLONS OF GAS QUICKLY . HAD TO PULL OVER AND CALL FOR TOW TRUCK TO TAKE TO NEAREST FACILITY. I EVACUATED THE CAR DUE TO LARGE AMOUNTS OF GAS UNDER VEHICLE AND STREAMS OF FUEL NEAR HOT EXHAUST PIPES. TECHNICIAN DISCOVERED FUEL LINE HAD COME LOOSE AFTER LOOKING INSIDE PORT FROM UNDER BACK SEAT. NO EVIDENCE OF ANY BREAKAGE OR OTHER ISSUES THE FIRST EVENT-- THE LINE SIMPLY CAME LOOSE AND WAS EASILY RE-ATTACHED. THE SECOND EVENT HAPPENED IN JUNE 2007 AND FUEL AGAIN WAS POURING OUT FROM THE UNDERSIDE IN A PARKING LOT. I CALLED THE SAME INDEPENDENT DEALER WHO IMMEDIATELY HAD THE CAR TOWED . THIS TIME THE REPAIR WAS DONE WITH METAL STRAPS TO PREVENT ANY FURTHER COMING APART. I THEN RECEIVED A RECALL LETTER FROM SAAB AFTER THIS OCCURRENCE TWO TIMES. I WAS TOLD BY SAAB USA TO SUBMIT REPAIR ORDERS FOR REIMBURSEMENT WHICH I DID. I RECEIVED A DENIAL LETTER UNTIL AN AUTHORIZED SAAB DEALER COULD CHECK THE WORK COMPLETED BY THE INDEPENDENT DEALER. I WAS CALLED BY THE AUTHORIZED DEALER IN MARIETTA, GA AND TOLD THAT I MAY NEED A COMPLETE FUEL ASSEMBLY FOR $1100 DUE TO THE INDEPENDENT DEALERS REPAIRS AFFECTING ELECTRICAL WIRING. THE CAR IS AT THE DEALER FOR INVESTIGATION AND HOPEFULLY A SAAB USA WILL STAND BEHIND THE NEEDED REPAIRS. CONSULTATION ON INTERNET CHAT ROOM SAABNET.COM FINDS THAT AT LEAST 4 OTHER OWNERS OF SIMILAR VINTAGE SAAB 9-5 VEHICLES HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS SAME PROBLEM. SAAB USA IS QUESTIONING MY REPAIRS AT THE INDEPENDENT DEALER. *TR

  • Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, IF AN OWNER CHANGES THEIR WHEELS/TIRES BETWEEN SUMMER AND WINTER USING A STEEL WHEEL IN THE WINTER AND AN ALLOY WHEEL IN THE SUMMER, IT IS POSSIBLE FOR RUST AND CONTAMINATION TO BUILD UP ON THE WHEEL HUB DURING THE STEEL WHEEL USAGE. IF THIS OCCURS AND THE CONTAMINATION IS NOT REMOVED, IT IS POSSIBLE THAT AFTER THE TIRE CHANGE SERVICE, SOME OF THIS CONTAMINATION COULD FLAKE OR GRIND AWAY RESULTING IN REDUCED CLAMPING FORCE OF THE WHEEL TO THE HUB. OVER SEVERAL SEASONS, IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THIS REDUCED FORCE COULD RESULT IN FRACTURES DEVELOPING IN THE WHEEL BOLTS DUE TO WHEEL TO HUB MOVEMENT.
  • Consequence: THESE FRACTURES WOULD RESULT IN WHEEL BOLT BREAKAGE, ALLOWING THE WHEEL TO DETACH FROM THE WHEEL HUB, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
  • Remedy: OWNERS WILL BE CONTACTED BY MAIL AND ASKED WHETHER THEY CHANGE BETWEEN STEEL AND ALLOY WHEELS. IF THEY DO ENGAGE IN THIS PRACTICE, THEY WILL BE INSTRUCTED TO BRING THEIR CARS TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER. THE DEALER WILL REMOVE THE WHEELS, CLEAN ANY CONTAMINATION FROM THE WHEEL AND WHEEL HUB, AND REPLACE THE WHEELS USING NEW IMPROVED BOLTS WITH ATTACHED WASHERS. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN MARCH 31, 2003. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT SAAB AT 1-800-955-9007.

  • Manufacturer: SAAB CARS USA, INC.

  • Summary: THE STEERING KNUCKLE CASTINGS ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES MAY HAVE BEEN CONTAMINATED DURING THE CASTING PROCESS.
  • Consequence: THESE KNUCKLES CAN BREAK, RESULTING IN POSSIBLE LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE STEERING KNUCKLE FOR THE CASTING NUMBER. IF THE KNUCKLE WAS IN THE DEFECTIVE BATCH, THE STEERING KNUCKLE WILL BE REPLACED. OWNER NOTIFICATION IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING JANUARY 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT SAAB AT 1-800-955-9007.

Negative 2002 Saab 9-5 car reviews

  1. Jeffrey Huels 2024-05-17

This car was a disappointment. The performance tires were not suitable for snowy conditions, and the dealer refused to exchange them for regular ones. Additionally, there were several flats and interior issues during the year that I owned it.

  2. Johnny Denesik 2024-01-14

This car has been in the shop for 45 days in the last 18 months due to various issues such as transmission hesitation, sunroof malfunction, engine light coming on, and climate control problems. Despite our disappointment, we remain confident in our decision to move on from Saab and explore other options. We believe that our experience with this car is not representative of Saab's overall quality and we wish them the best in their future endeavors.

Positive 2002 Saab 9-5 car reviews

Exhillarating (yet quiet) 4 CYL. Sport button coverts this into a fun toy. The stereo is very good. However, the build quality could be improved, as the heated seat controls and open/close vent thingys look a bit cheap. Additionally, for a car built for Northern Europe, it may not handle well in snow and the winter setting doesn't seem to do much good. Therefore, I would not recommend it as an only car if snow and hills feature in your life.

Hi there! I've been the proud owner of my 9-5 for 3.5 years now. I bought it from a local dealer when it was coming off lease, and I've put approximately 90k miles on it. I'm constantly amazed at the mileage I get, especially on the highway where I average 32-34 mpg (depending on A/C needs). This car is incredibly quiet, comfortable, and somewhat fun to drive. While it may not be a sports car, it handles well and accelerates nicely, especially in sport mode. I actually bought a Maxima, but it just sits in the garage while I half-heartedly attempt to sell my 9-5 - that should tell you something! Overall, the Saab 9-5 is a well-done package, even if it's not overly exciting in any one area.

Great job on your performance, and I'm impressed with the stability!

  4. Jordon Brakus 2024-08-15

I've been driving my Saab 9-5 Aero for 21 months now and it has been an absolute joy. It has everything I was looking for in a car - great performance and an impressive 32 MPG on the highway. The trunk is incredibly spacious and the handling is top-notch. Plus, the onstar system is a game-changer with its built-in phone that allows for hands-free communication. I've even surprised a few people at stoplights with the sport mode, which launches the car like a rocket from a standstill. I'm happy to report that I haven't had any problems or repairs so far, which only reinforces my belief that this is one of the most underrated cars on the market today.

This car is an absolute blast to drive and is the best luxury car for the money. I have been driving it for a year now and have not had to take it back to the dealership for any problems. Every time I get behind the wheel, the car still amazes me. The turbo is incredible, the gas mileage is fantastic, and the seats are so comfortable. It corners like it's on rails and the passing acceleration is among the best of any car I've ever driven. I even had a BMW 7 series try to keep up with me on an on-ramp to the freeway and I flat blew him away!
