Chrysler New yorker 1998 problems

chrysler logo

The Chrysler New Yorker is an automobile model produced by Chrysler from 1940 until 1996, serving for several decades as either the brand's flagship model or as a junior sedan to the Chrysler Imperial, the latter during the years in which the Imperial name was used within the Chrysler lineup rather than as a standalone brand.

A trim level named the "New York Special" first appeared in 1938, while the "New Yorker" name debuted in 1939. The New Yorker helped define the Chrysler brand as a maker of upscale models that were priced and equipped to compete against upper-level models from Buick, Oldsmobile, and Mercury.

The New Yorker was Chrysler's most prestigious model throughout most of its run. Over the decades, it was available in several body styles, including sedan, coupe, and convertible.

Until its discontinuation in 1996, the New Yorker was the longest-running American car nameplate.

The Chrysler New Yorker, particularly the 1998 model, has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues:

  • Engine Noise: The engine in the Chrysler New Yorker has been reported to have several noise-related issues. For instance, hard starting and a miss at idle can be traced to defective fuel rails in the 1993-94 models. Revised parts are available for this issue, which was reported in the 1993-96 models.
  • Transmission Failure: Transmission failure has been reported in the 1990 New Yorker, with one complaint recorded.

  • Engine Oil Sludging: The Chrysler 3.5L engine, used in the Chrysler New Yorker, has been reported to have oil sludging issues, which can cause the engine to fail at relatively low mileages. This issue is caused by the engine running hot and the PCV system not pulling enough air through the crankcase.

These are some of the most common problems reported by Chrysler New Yorker owners. It is important to note that these issues may not affect all vehicles of this make and model, and some may not experience any problems at all. However, it is essential to be aware of these potential issues when purchasing or owning a Chrysler New Yorker, particularly the 1998 model.
