Origin of the name
The name of "Cadillac's first small car" was selected over a revival of LaSalle or the GM design staff's preference, LaScala, primarily because, as noted by GM Marketing Director Gordon Horsburgh, "It had no negatives." The initial suggestion was "Leland" in honor of one of the make's founders but it was rejected because most buyers wouldn't understand the reference and Henry Leland had also founded rival Lincoln.
Hundreds of suggestions were considered: after extensive research, LaSalle was the top pick with St. Moritz a distant second, trailed further by Seville. A troubled past (LaSalle) and difficult pronunciation (St. Moritz) led to the eventual selection of the Seville nameplate.
Seville is the name of a Spanish province and its capital, renowned for its history and treasures of art and architecture. Cadillac had first used the nameplate for a two-door hardtop version of the 1956 Eldorado. 1960 was the last model year for the Eldorado Seville, returning in 1967 under a different name.

This is my second STS. The original 2000 had some hard shifting points and was somewhat soft in the corners. However, the 2003 model was smoother to shift and is much firmer in cornering. I have found both models to be incredibly dependable, inexpensive to run and extremely reliable. My wife, who is in her thirties, loved the look of the car and asked me to buy the first one over a BMW or Mercedes.

This is my fourth Cadillac, second Seville. It's definitely the best car on the road! The car turns heads, which I absolutely love. The ride is comfortable yet road responsive - a true pleasure. I only had one repair about seven years ago, and Cadillac roadside service arrived in about half an hour and fixed the car on the spot - WOW! When you get dressed and go out, the car helps you feel special. Put the pedal to the metal and you can fly, both physically and emotionally. A car should do more than just travel; it should make you feel good. The Seville is all that and more!

What are the common problems with the Northstar engine? With my extensive experience of over 450,000 miles with Northstar engines, I have identified only four issues with a Northstar equipped car. Firstly, the owner plays a crucial role in maintaining the engine's health. Secondly, Cadillac decided to place the secondary air pump in a challenging location, which can be expensive to repair if it gets wet. Thirdly, the torque converter clutch solenoid tends to short out, but I have found a solution to this problem by adding a 3 Ohm power resistor to the circuit. Lastly, since Cadillac dropped the K chassi in favor of the Buick G (C) platform, working on the engine has become more challenging. It is important to note that the Northstar engine's cooling system requires regular maintenance, and neglecting it can lead to severe damage. By changing the thermostat every year and the water pump every 150,000 miles, you can drive the car for 300,000 miles without any trouble. However, if the engine overheats twice, it will pull the head bolts out of the block, and it will be beyond repair.

The car is very comfortable on long trips and handles well. However, when I try to keep up with traffic and reach speeds of 82 to 85, it vibrates slightly. The dealer has attempted to fix the issue, but unfortunately, without success. Despite this, the car is still beautiful and performs well at lower speeds.
