1999 Chrysler 300m problems

The Chrysler 300M is a full-size luxury car that was produced by Daimler/Chrysler from 1999 to 2004. It is a front-wheel drive, 255 hp (190 kW; 259 PS) V6 engined car using the Chrysler LH platform. Versus its platform mates, the 300M was roughly 10 inches (25 cm) shorter to make it more easily exportable to Europe. Priced above the Concorde and identically to the LHS, the 300M shared Chrysler's flagship position with the LHS until the LHS's discontinuation after 2001, upon which it became Chrysler's sole flagship model.

Design

Prior to Chrysler redesigning the LH-cars in 1998, the Eagle Vision filled the "import-fighter" segment. Its second-generation replacement was reportedly benchmarked against the BMW 5 Series, yet with Chrysler discontinuing the entire Eagle line after 1998, the automaker shifted this vehicle to the Chrysler lineup, bringing back the famed "300" model name. Although the cars were not rear-wheel-drive, special-production models, nor V8-powered with engines rated at 300 horsepower as did the historic models, the 300M used the next letter available in the 300 Letter Series, following the 1965 300L. The 300M also lacked the traditional "cross-hair" grille of previous 300 models, as by the mid-1980s it had been adopted by sister division Dodge for its entire model line.

Had the Eagle brand not been dropped, the 300M reportedly would have been sold as a redesigned Eagle Vision. Test cars, factory manuals, and design images were prepared for the second-generation Vision featuring a prominent Eagle badge on the grille. Sharing its powertrain and interior with the Chrysler LHS, the 300M was some ten inches shorter in overall length, allowing it to fit the European "5-metre" (16.4 ft) size class for exports to Europe. Despite this, wheelbase was shared with all other second generation LH cars, with reductions in length coming from shortened front and rear overhangs.

Common 1999 Chrysler 300m problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the Chrysler 300M 1999, several common problems have been reported. Here is a detailed list of these issues:

  • Body Control Module: The body control module in the Chrysler 300M 1999 is prone to failure. This component is responsible for managing various electrical functions in the vehicle, and when it malfunctions, it can lead to issues with lights, locks, and other electrical systems. Replacing the body control module is essential to ensure the proper operation of these systems.
  • Transmission Problems: The 1999 Chrysler 300M has been associated with serious transmission issues. Owners have reported instances where the automatic transmission fails, leading to jerky movements, bad noises, and an inability to shift gears. In some cases, this has resulted in the complete failure of the transmission, necessitating costly replacements. Proper maintenance, including using the correct transmission fluid, is crucial to prevent such failures.
  • Electrical Problems: Electrical issues are a common complaint among Chrysler 300M owners. These problems include random flashing of dash lights and headlights, issues with automatic door locks, alarm systems going off randomly, and various other electrical malfunctions. Troubleshooting and repairing these electrical issues can be challenging and may require replacing components like the body control module or addressing issues with the automatic temperature control unit.
  • Cracked Dashboard: Another prevalent problem reported by owners is the dashboard cracking. This issue affects the interior aesthetics of the vehicle and can be a common occurrence in older models. Cracked dashboards not only detract from the car's appearance but can also indicate issues with the quality of materials used in the vehicle's construction.

By addressing these common problems with the Chrysler 300M 1999, owners can ensure the longevity and reliability of their vehicles. Regular maintenance, timely repairs, and using the correct fluids and parts are essential to mitigate these issues and keep the car running smoothly.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-07-08
  • VIN: 2C3HE66G3XH
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: MY AIRBAGS EXPLODED ON MY CHRYSLER 300M 1999 JULY 8TH. THE CAR DOESN'T HAVE A RECALL ON THE AIRBAGS. CLEAN TITLE. I CAME HOME FROM WORK, PARKED MY CAR AND EVERYTHING WAS FINE. 3 HOURS LATER I HAD TO RUN TO THE STORE AND AS I WALKED TOWARDS MY CAR I NOTICED BOTH OF MY FRONT AIRBAGS OUT. I LOOKED AROUND MY CAR TO SEE IF THERE WAS ANY DAMAGE AND I COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING. I ASSUMED THAT THE EXPLOSION OF THE AIRBAGS COULD'VE BEEN DUE TO THE SEVERE WEATHER WE HAD IN OUR AREA, THERE WAS SOME FLOODING AND ALSO THE HOT/HUMID WEATHER. I DIDN'T MOVE MY CAR AFTER SEEING THE AIRBAGS OUT, THE CAR WAS LEFT AS IS. I CALLED MY INSURANCE COMPANY AND TOLD THEM WHAT HAPPENED AND THEY SENT ONE OF THEIR AGENTS TO TAKE A LOOK AND TAKE PICTURES AND CHECK THE CAR OUT HIMSELF. HE WAS SURPRISED TO HEAR THAT AIRBAGS EXPLODED WITHOUT THE CAR BEING IN AN ACCIDENT, BUT HE SAID THAT HE WOULD HAVE TO TALK WITH SOME OTHER PEOPLE AND SEE WHAT THEY HAVE TO SAY BECAUSE THEY'VE NEVER COME ACROSS A PROBLEM LIKE THIS. ABOUT A WEEK LATER HE SENT ANOTHER AGENT TO TAKE A LOOK AT THE CAR AND HE WAS SURPRISED AS WELL, HE TOOK A LOOK AT THE CAR, INSIDE AND OUT, COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING. THIS WAS BASICALLY AN INVESTIGATION AT THIS POINT. A WEEK LATER THE FIRST AGENT CALLS BACK TO NOTIFY ME THAT THEY ARE UNABLE TO PAY US FOR THIS DAMAGE AND THAT WE ARE ON OUR OWN BECAUSE THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO, THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHO TO PUT THE BLAME ON. I THEN DECIDED TO CALL CHRYSLER TELL THEM WHAT HAPPENED AND THEY SAID THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO DO EITHER AND ALSO TOLD ME THEY COULDN'T HELP BECAUSE IT'S A 99. IN ORDER TO REPLACE THE AIRBAGS I WOULD HAVE TO PAY 4K OUT OF POCKET. *TR

STEERING,SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-12-16
  • VIN: 2C3HE66G8XH
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION
  • Summary: ALIGNMENT HAS BEEN OFF FOR ABOUT 2 YEARS. TOOK TO MY MECHANIC FRIEND AND HE SAID THAT ALL THE BOLTS ASSOCIATED WITH MY RACK AND PINION HAD BECOME LOOSE. HE TIGHTENED THE BOLTS UP, AND THE VERY NEXT DAY THEY WORKED LOOSE AGAIN. HE DID RESEARCH ON MY VEHICLE AND FOUND THAT THERE ARE SEVERAL COMPLAINS ABOUT THE RACK AND PINION AND IS SHOCKED THAT CHRYSLER HAS NOT MADE A RECALL YET. I HAVE NOT HAD ANY MAJOR ACCIDENTS OR PROBLEMS, BUT AS I READ ON THE INTERNET SOMEONE HAS DIED FROM THE RACK AND PINION PROBLEMS, AND THERE HAS BEEN SEVERAL PROBLEMS DUE TO THE RACK AND PINION NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. MY MECHANIC FRIEND IS GOING TO TRY TO TIGHTEN THE BOLTS AGAIN USING LOCK TIGHT(?) ON THE BOLTS AND HOPEFULLY THIS WILL HELP THE PROBLEM. MY FEAR IS THAT THERE ARE OTHERS WHO HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM, AS LISTED ON WWW.ARFC.ORG/COMPLAINTS/2000/CHRYSLER/300M/STEERING/PROBLEM.ASPX AND CANNOT GET THE HELP THAT THEY NEED AND THEIR ONLY HELP LIES WITHIN A RECALL BY CHRYSLER ESPECIALLY DUE TO THE DIFFICULT ECONOMY. NOT EVERYONE IS LUCKY TO HAVE A MECHANIC THAT IS A FRIEND. *TR

Negative 1999 Chrysler 300m car reviews

I am very satisfied with this vehicle. It is easy to drive, performs exceptionally well, and has an attractive appearance. Although, after 4 years of use, I have noticed some minor issues with the interior materials. Specifically, some of the plastic around the window/lock switches and gear selector can become sticky, which can be difficult to clean. Additionally, I have noticed some minor wear on the upper portion of one of the rear leather seats, despite my efforts to maintain the vehicle. However, these issues are minor and do not detract from the overall quality of the vehicle.

I have experienced persistent issues with the car doors over the past six months. Despite having the moldings and door panels replaced, the doors still require excessive force to close and produce an unpleasant wind noise. During a recent car wash, water leaked into the car through the doors, and the window fell out upon closing. Additionally, the car's design has poor visibility when reversing. I will be taking the car to a Toyota dealer to address these concerns with confidence that they will be resolved.

  4. Garret DuBuque 2024-11-03

The car was everything I wanted except for its reliability. I am disappointed that after only 3 years of ownership and 76900 miles, I have had to deal with several repairs. During the warranty period, the driver's side window motor was replaced 3 times, and the remaining three window motors were replaced twice for the same reason. Additionally, the speed sensor for the transmission was replaced twice due to failure. Unfortunately, I had to pay for repairs out of warranty, including the speed sensor for the transmission for the third time, which only lasted 30,000 miles this time and was not covered by the dealership's standard 1 year or 12,000 mile warranty. I also had to replace the fuel pump module due to failure, which cost $300 just for the device, with labor and tax extra.

Based on the electrical issues encountered in such a short period of time owned, I strongly advise against purchasing this car. Despite having put the car through its paces, including driving it hard, having it scoped twice, and checking it physically, there were still some unregistered codes due to a block in the link. Although no negative codes were presented, the car's performance was not up to par. After bringing the car home, we encountered several issues such as the rear window getting stuck open, the interior lights above/front not working anymore, and none of the windows working full-time. These issues are definite red flags and should not be ignored.

I had a good laugh reading these reviews. It seems like I have experienced every issue mentioned: windows stopped going down, interior lights wouldn't shut off, alternator needed replacement, motor fans stopped working, alignment was problematic, radiator had to be replaced, battery (which is in a ridiculous spot) started leaking and burned hoses, and now, it has finally reached its end as the transmission is done. On the bright side, it has already clocked 190,000k miles and if I did get the transmission fixed, it might go up to 250k. But come on, Chrysler!

  2. Kaden Schroeder 2024-11-17

I've been wanting one of these since the unveiling in 1998, and in 2004, I finally got my hands on one. It did not disappoint. The V6 engine provides great performance for a car of its size, making it an excellent daily driver. I can't think of any other car that could top it, except for maybe a new hemi 300. The only downside has been the expensive AC repairs and some faulty sensors over the years. The car only left me stranded once when the battery died. I believe that most of the issues with these cars stem from a lack of maintenance, either by the current or previous owners. Take care of the car, and it will take care of you.

Choice of this loaded used car or a new Intrepid with limited toys... Had an intrepid.. loved it, but wanted something a little more plush. Glad I did. I have had no problems other than a dashboard crack, which was fixed under recall, and a window motor that went out. That cost me 150 bucks. But the car is solid after 65000 miles and looks great.

  4. Marcelo Gutkowski 2024-10-24

I love this car! It's such a joy to drive. Although, there are a couple of things that I wish could be improved: 1) More torque and horsepower, and 2) cupholders in the back. Other than that, it's been a great experience driving this car and I haven't encountered any issues so far.

  5. Monserrate Friesen 2024-10-22

The car is great, but the tires that came with it are not the best quality. They tend to be quite noisy. However, once you replace them, the road noise disappears. It's worth noting that I've driven over 45000 miles and have only needed to get oil changes!
