Chrysler 300m problems

The Chrysler 300M is a full-size luxury car that was produced by Daimler/Chrysler from 1999 to 2004. It is a front-wheel drive, 255 hp (190 kW; 259 PS) V6 engined car using the Chrysler LH platform. Versus its platform mates, the 300M was roughly 10 inches (25 cm) shorter to make it more easily exportable to Europe. Priced above the Concorde and identically to the LHS, the 300M shared Chrysler's flagship position with the LHS until the LHS's discontinuation after 2001, upon which it became Chrysler's sole flagship model.

Design

Prior to Chrysler redesigning the LH-cars in 1998, the Eagle Vision filled the "import-fighter" segment. Its second-generation replacement was reportedly benchmarked against the BMW 5 Series, yet with Chrysler discontinuing the entire Eagle line after 1998, the automaker shifted this vehicle to the Chrysler lineup, bringing back the famed "300" model name. Although the cars were not rear-wheel-drive, special-production models, nor V8-powered with engines rated at 300 horsepower as did the historic models, the 300M used the next letter available in the 300 Letter Series, following the 1965 300L. The 300M also lacked the traditional "cross-hair" grille of previous 300 models, as by the mid-1980s it had been adopted by sister division Dodge for its entire model line.

Had the Eagle brand not been dropped, the 300M reportedly would have been sold as a redesigned Eagle Vision. Test cars, factory manuals, and design images were prepared for the second-generation Vision featuring a prominent Eagle badge on the grille. Sharing its powertrain and interior with the Chrysler LHS, the 300M was some ten inches shorter in overall length, allowing it to fit the European "5-metre" (16.4 ft) size class for exports to Europe. Despite this, wheelbase was shared with all other second generation LH cars, with reductions in length coming from shortened front and rear overhangs.

  1. Damaged Cam Position Sensor May Cause Engine Problems
One of the most common problems with the Chrysler 300M is a damaged cam position sensor, which can cause engine problems such as stalling, misfiring, and difficulty starting. The cam position sensor is responsible for providing information to the engine control module (ECM) about the position of the camshaft, which is crucial for proper engine operation. If the sensor is damaged or malfunctioning, it can cause the engine to run poorly or not at all.
  2. Electrical Issues
Another common problem with the Chrysler 300M is electrical issues. Many owners have reported problems with the car's electrical system, including blown fuses, malfunctioning lights, and intermittent electrical failures. Transmission problems are also common with the Chrysler 300M. Many owners have reported issues with the car's automatic transmission, including slipping, jerking, and difficulty shifting. These problems can be caused by a variety of factors, including low transmission fluid, worn-out clutch packs, and malfunctioning solenoids.
  4. Suspension Problems
Suspension problems are another common issue with the Chrysler 300M. Many owners have reported problems with the car's suspension, including excessive noise, vibration, and poor handling. These problems can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn-out bushings, damaged struts, and malfunctioning sway bars.
  5. Brake Problems
Brake problems are also common with the Chrysler 300M. Many owners have reported issues with the car's brakes, including noise, vibration, and difficulty stopping. These problems can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn-out brake pads, damaged rotors, and malfunctioning brake calipers.
  6. Engine Problems
Engine problems are another common issue with the Chrysler 300M. Many owners have reported problems with the car's engine, including poor performance, rough idling, and difficulty starting. These problems can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn-out spark plugs, clogged fuel injectors, and malfunctioning sensors.
  7. Interior Problems
Interior problems are also common with the Chrysler 300M. Many owners have reported issues with the car's interior, including broken buttons, malfunctioning climate control, and worn-out upholstery. These problems can be caused by a variety of factors, including poor design, low-quality materials, and heavy use.
  8. Exterior Problems
Exterior problems are another common issue with the Chrysler 300M. Many owners have reported issues with the car's exterior, including rust, paint problems, and damaged trim. These problems can be caused by a variety of factors, including exposure to the elements, poor design, and low-quality materials.
  9. Fuel System Problems
Fuel system problems are also common with the Chrysler 300M. Many owners have reported issues with the car's fuel system, including poor fuel economy, difficulty starting, and rough idling. These problems can be caused by a variety of factors, including clogged fuel injectors, dirty fuel filters, and malfunctioning sensors.
  10. ABS Problems
ABS problems are another common issue with the Chrysler 300M. Many owners have reported issues with the car's anti-lock braking system (ABS), including warning lights, difficulty stopping, and poor braking performance. These problems can be caused by a variety of factors, including faulty sensors, malfunctioning solenoids, and damaged wiring.

In conclusion, the Chrysler 300M is a sports-luxury car that has been praised for its evocative styling and brilliant engineering. However, like any car, it has its share of problems and complaints from owners. The most common issues based on car owner complaints include damaged cam position sensor, electrical issues, transmission problems, suspension problems, brake problems, engine problems, interior problems, exterior problems, fuel system problems, and ABS problems.

Is Chrysler 300M a reliable car?

Latest negative Chrysler 300m car reviews

  1. Unique Buckridge 2025-10-24

    Vehicle year: 1999

Although I was initially hesitant to purchase an American car, the exterior design of this vehicle won me over. However, I have experienced some mechanical issues with this Chrysler, including engine fans, rotors, front wheel bearings, multiple sensors, and brake pads, which have required an investment of over 3k within the first 4 months of ownership. Despite these challenges, I am still reluctant to sell it. It is my hope that Chrysler will address these mechanical issues in the future, as this car has the potential to be a class leader. Thank you for your consideration.

  2. Carmelo Tremblay 2025-10-21

    Vehicle year: 2003

The car is quite attractive and the interior looks great. The leather quality is impressive. The gas mileage could use some improvement, but overall it's a good car. It requires a set of four tires that cost $900.00, but they are the only size that fits. The factory brakes are not the best and the ride is a bit rough, but the car has some great features. The only downside is that it sits quite low in the front end.

  3. Max Kub 2025-10-13

    Vehicle year: 2003

I purchased this car back in 2012 with 115,000 miles on it, along with the Route 66 extended warranty. Initially, it was a lot of fun to drive, as it handled great, sounded great, and was really comfortable. Unfortunately, in 2013, it experienced a rod bearing issue, which resulted in the engine needing to be replaced. The engine was replaced with a new one that had 80k miles on it, and it lasted for a year until December 2014, when it experienced rod bearing issues again. The engine was replaced once more with another 80k mile engine, which cost $1,100 (only because it's bank-owned). It's worth noting that the Chrysler 300m special has a known issue with its EGK engine, which is only made for the Special with 255hp, and Chrysler has never issued a recall for it. So, if you're considering purchasing this car at 115k miles and it's the Special, be prepared for some potential headaches.

  4. Claude Nikolaus 2025-09-18

    Vehicle year: 2004

The layout of the front of the car could be more convenient to work with. While the cupholders can hold larger cups, they don't grip bottles of water well, which can lead to spills. Additionally, the location of the holders is not ideal as they can hit your arm as you move. The storage under the armrest is also awkward to reach and difficult to access while driving, especially since the change holder is located there. It's also not possible to get toll money while driving without taking your eyes off the road, which could be dangerous. I wonder how many accidents are caused by this? Finally, the manuals take up most of the glove compartment, leaving no storage place for CDs, and it's difficult to reach into the backseat. While the car is comfortable, it could be more functional.

I'm sure that when this vehicle first came out, it excited the lower end luxury buyers. It comes with lots of features that put it way ahead of a Corolla or Accord of the same year. The car has seat warmers, a 4-disc changer, a tape player, and an electronic display showing direction, gas mileage, estimated miles remaining in the tank, temperature, and even tire pressure! However, I bought the car used and, unfortunately, shortly after, the Water Pump, A/C and Timing Belt all needed to be changed. Now the transmission is dying and preventing me from registering it further unless it gets replaced. Too many problems and repairs make it a frustrating car. The lower gas mileage of about 14-17 city also makes it an expensive and frequent fill up. Although she looks beautiful, the car's performance is terrible.

I've owned this car for a year now and I can't seem to find anything to complain about. We've driven long distances and it's a beautiful road car. Without cruise control, we could be in a lot of trouble, but thankfully that's not an issue. The braking is excellent and the automatic climate control is great. So far, it's been a great experience!

I traded my 1999 300M for my 2003 300M Special and I have never regretted it. Both cars were great, but the Special was truly spectacular. It had larger wheels, better suspension, better looks, a two-tone interior, and I even felt like it performed better. Both cars were fully loaded with features like a sunroof, CD changer, premium sound system, full leather interior, and heated, full power seats.

I've driven this car for over 3 years and have covered 80K miles. It has only required routine maintenance and no repairs. I agree with other reviewers about the tire wear, which can be quite expensive at $800 a set. I was considering trading it for either the Lexus RX330 or the Infiniti FX45, but after test driving both, I found that the 300M is more comfortable, rides more smoothly, handles better, and is considerably faster than either of the others. Overall, this has been a nearly perfect car, except for the tire wear. My only regret is that I bought it in the 'cypress green' color, which I now find silly.

If only this car had a better looking front and was more reliable, it could have easily joined the ranks of classic cars. I'm a bit confused as to why Chrysler hasn't addressed the recurring issues that seem to persist year after year.

I purchased the car with 45,000 km and may have paid more than I should have. I traded my Sebring for the 300M and had no major problems in the first year. However, after that, the front suspension began to break down and I had to replace many parts such as stabilizer bars, link-bars (upper-lower) bars, brakes, etc. The parts were quite expensive, similar to those of a Mercedes or some foreign car. Unfortunately, there were too many electrical issues with lights flashing and the engine light coming on. Despite my regular maintenance, the car had too many problems and I spent over $10,000.00 in repairs since 2005. My advice would be to stay away from this car when it starts showing problems and sell it fast!
