The BMW Z models are a line of roadsters manufactured by German automaker BMW. The Z stands for Zukunft (German for future), and has been produced in four different series with six generations consisting of roadster, coupé, sports car, and concept variants.

The introduction of the M Coupé and M Roadster in the Z3 line marked the first of the Z series to have a high-performance BMW M variant. The first generation Z4 also continued to offer M Coupé and M Roadster variants. The current Z4 (G29) uses BMW's (B58B30) inline-six, its platform is the basis for the current Toyota Supra.

BMW Z1 (E30 based; 1989–1991)

The BMW Z1 is a two-seat roadster developed by BMW and was produced from March 1989 to June 1991. It was based on the E30 3 Series platform. The Z1 featured unusual doors which, instead of opening outward or upward, dropped into the door sills and had body panels which could easily be removed and replaced; the car could be driven with all its body panels removed for weight reduction and increased performance. Only 8,000 examples of the Z1 were produced.

Common 2010 Bmw Z4 problems

The BMW Z4, a luxury compact car, is known for its reliability, but like any vehicle, it can experience issues due to worn or failed parts. Here are some common problems reported by owners of the BMW Z4, particularly the 2010 model:

  • Clunking Steering Wheel: Some drivers of 2003-2008 Z4s have reported a clunk or jolt from the steering wheel upon applying the brakes. This issue is often caused by a faulty front control arm bracket bushing, which can be replaced for $30 to $80 plus labor costs.
  • Coolant Loss: Engine coolant leakage from the expansion tank has been reported in 2003-2005 and 2008 Z4 models. If left unaddressed, this issue can lead to severe engine damage. Replacing the upper and lower hoses, along with the expansion tank, can cost around $700.
  • Defective Roof Mechanism: Many owners of the 2008 Z4 redesign have complained about a defective roof mechanism that causes the roof motor to develop rust. This issue can persist even after multiple replacements of the roof mechanism.
  • Malfunctioning Convertible Top: A malfunctioning convertible top has been reported as a common problem in the 2003 BMW Z4. The convertible top may move sluggishly or become inoperable, requiring motor and hydraulic system replacements.
  • Oil Leaks: BMW Z4s, including the 2010 model, are known to suffer from oil leaks due to issues with rocker cover gaskets, oil filter housing, and the sump. These leaks are consistent but relatively easy to fix, with plenty of room under the hood and car for repairs .
  • Misfire Coil Packs and Spark Plugs: Misfire coil packs and spark plugs are common issues in BMW Z4s. The fuel injectors and high-pressure fuel pump can also cause misfire problems, particularly in the Z4's inline-6 engines .
  • Brake Vacuum Pump Issues: Some Z4s, particularly earlier models, have experienced issues with the brake vacuum pump, causing the pedal to become very soft or very hard. A repair kit is available, and replacement pumps are not very expensive for older vehicles .
  • Coolant Issues: Coolant problems are common in some Z4 engine options, particularly those with electronic cooling pumps. These pumps can have issues due to the incompatibility of electricity and water .
  • Driveshaft A-Joint Failure: Z4s built between 30 December 2010 and 29 April 2011 may experience a failure in the driveshaft A-joint, which sends power from the engine to the rear wheels. A BMW dealer can determine if the car is affected and replace the part if necessary.
  • Power Steering Failure: Some Z4s manufactured between 1 November and 31 December 2011 may experience electric power steering system failure, causing the steering to become much heavier. A BMW dealer can check if the car is affected and replace the steering system if needed.

These common problems should be considered when purchasing, maintaining, or repairing a BMW Z4. Regular inspections and timely repairs can help ensure the vehicle's longevity and reliability.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-05-16
  • VIN: WBALM7C57AE
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: BMW HAS ACKNOWLEDGED A KNOWN ISSUE CAUSING FAILURE OF THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP. THE BMW TECHNICAL BULLETIN IS (SI B 13 03 09). THIS EXTENDS THE WARRANTY OF THE PART TO 10 YEARS. THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE FAILURE IS NOT WELL DOCUMENTED BY THE VEHICLE ISSUE LOGGING SYSTEM, AND THAT OTHER ISSUES WITH THE CAR ARE CITED AS A REASON TO NOT PERFORM THE PART REPLACEMENT. BMW N. AMERICA AND BMW OF AUSTIN DO NOT, AND CAN NOT PROVIDE A TEST TO CHECK THE VEHICLE'S FUEL SYSTEM INDEPENDENTLY. THIS PUTS DRIVERS, PASSENGERS AND ANYONE ELSE AT RISK SHOULD THE PART FAIL SUDDENLY AFTER EXHIBITING PARTIAL FAILURES. THE COMPLAINT SHOULD ALSO NOTE THAT BMW DOES NOT PROVIDE AN EASY WAY TO REPORT THIS IMPORTANT SAFETY ISSUE AS THERE IS NO FIXED PROCESS TO DOCUMENT THE ISSUES.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-03-31
  • VIN: WBALM7C56AE
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: DURING A COLD, DRIVING RAIN STORM, WITH DRIVER & 1 PASSENGER, STARTED TO DRIVE. (VERY 1ST DRIVE IN THIS CAR WITH COLD WEATHER) WHAT A SURPRISE: WINDSHIELD IMMEDIATELY FOGGED UP. TURNED ON DEFOGGER, WINDSHIELD THEN FOGGED UP 100% AS WELL AS ALL OTHER WINDOWS - AS VISIBILITY DISAPPEARED, I STOPPED THE CAR & OPENED THE WINDOWS WITH THE BLOWER ON. NO HEAT COULD BE USED. THIS PROCESS WAS REPEATED OVER THE NEXT 1 TO 1-1/2 HOURS IN ORDER TO CONTINUE DRIVING. ISSUE WAS REPORTED TO BMW MANY TIMES OVER. I HAD TO LEARN THAT DESPITE COLD AMBIENT TEMPERATURES W-W/O RAIN, SNOW, ETC. - THE A/C MUST BE TURNED ON IN ORDER TO NOT FOG THE WINDOWS. BMW: THERE'S NOTHING TO FIX, THAT'S THE WAY IT IS. THE AMBIENT AIR IS DIRECTED THROUGH A PORTION OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT, THIS HEATS UP THE AIR. BMW STATED THAT I MAY VOID THE WARRANTY IF I MODIFY THE SYSTEM TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM. THIS HAS CONTINUED TO OCCUR. ON A DRIVE ON CA'S COAST HIGHWAY, WITH TEMPS IN THE LOW 50'S - ONE MUST STILL RUN THE A/C & NO HEAT. BMW ASKED: WHAT DO YOU HAVE AGAINST RUNNING THE A/C ALL THE TIME? IN ADDITION TO IMPAIRED VISIBILITY - THIS RESULTS IN CONSTANT, VERY LOW MPG WITH THE A/C ALWAYS ON. WHEN BMW PROVIDED MPG'S TO FED. AGENCIES, I BELIEVE THAT BMW'S A/C'S WERE NOT ON & THESE CARS DEMAND PREMIUM FUEL. I SPOKE WITH A NATIONALLY KNOWN, RESPECTED TESTER/ADVISERS OF MANY VEHICLES - IT WAS CONFIRMED TO ME THAT THE MPG TESTS ARE CONDUCTED WITHOUT THE A/C'S BEING TURNED ON. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-07-06
  • VIN: WBALM5C51BE
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: 2011 BMW Z4, PURCHASED NEW WITH APPROXIMATELY 7K MILES. STARTED TO FEEL VIBRATION WHEN I PUT ON BRAKES AROUND 5K MILE MARK. VIBRATION LASTS 1-2 SECONDS. HAPPENED 20 TIMES SO FAR. I WAS DRIVING TODAY, 7000K MILE MARK, AND THE ENGINE FAILED AND DIED. LIKE SOMEBODY JUST TURNED IT OFF. LUCKILY I WAS ON LOCAL STREET SO I JUST CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS! THEN I RESTARTED THE CAR AND IT CAME BACK TO LIFE AND RAN LIKE NORMAL. TOOK IT TO DEALER AND DEALER SAID NOTHING WAS WRONG. SOMETHING IS WRONG IF YOUR CAR DIES WHILE YOU'RE DRIVING!! *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-06-18
  • VIN: WBALM5C50AE
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: WHENEVER SLOWING DOWN TO A NEAR STOP, THE ENGINE WILL RANDOMLY STALL. THIS CAN OCCUR AT ANYTIME, BUT IS MORE LIKELY TO OCCUR WHEN THE OUTSIDE AIR TEMPERATURE IS IN THE 90'S OR ABOVE (IT WILL STALL IN COLD TEMPERATURE AS WELL, BUT NOT AS OFTEN). THE ENGINE TEMPERATURE AT THE TIME OF THE STALL IS ALWAYS COMPLETELY NORMAL, THE CAR IS NOT OVERHEATING IN ANYWAY. IT IS ALSO MORE LIKELY TO OCCUR IN "SPORT MODE". THIS ISSUE ONLY EFFECTS BMW E89 3.0 AUTOMATICS. AN AUTOMATIC SHOULD NEVER STALL. ONCE THE ENGINE STALLS YOU ARE FORCED TO STOP THE CAR IN ORDER TO RESTART TO MOVE. THIS ISSUE IS OCCURRING WORLD-WIDE. I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR TO THE BMW DEALER IN AUSTIN, TX TO LOOK INTO THIS ISSUE. THEY STATED THAT THERE WERE NO ERROR CODES PRESENT IN THE COMPUTER. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS NOT ON. I HAD A BMW SHOP FOREMAN DRIVE WITH ME AND WE REPRODUCED THE ENGINE STALL AS WE APPROACHED A STOPLIGHT. HE STATED THERE WERE NO BMW SERVICE BULLETINS ABOUT THIS ISSUE. OTHER E89 Z4 OWNERS HAVE TAKEN THEIR CAR IN FOR SERVICE AT BMW DEALERS IN CALIFORNIA, FLORIDA AND TEXAS AND IN ALL CASES THE BMW MECHANICS FOUND NO REASON FOR THE ENGINE STALL AND DO NOT HAVE A FIX. RANDOM ENGINE STALL WHEN SLOWING IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS ISSUE. I CONSIDER THIS VEHICLE (E89 3.0 AUTOMATIC) TO BE UNSAFE AND UNRELIABLE IN HOT WEATHER. SERIOUS INJURY CAN OCCUR IF A CAR RANDOMLY SHUTS ITSELF OFF AS IT IS BEING SLOWED. OVER THE PAST 6 MONTHS, THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME AT LEAST 15-20 TIMES. *TR

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-02-05
  • VIN: WBALM5C52AE
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: CAR IS A NEW (11 /21/09) BMW Z4 WITH LESS THAN 2,000 MILES. WHEN DRIVING IN SUBURBAN TRAFFIC AT APPROXIMATELY 45MPH, DRIVER SIGNALED FOR A RIGHT HAND TURN AT AN INTERSECTION WITHOUT A TRAFFIC LIGHT. WHEN BRAKES WERE APPLIED, THERE WAS VIRTUALLY NO STOPPING POWER. UNABLE TO SLOW FOR THE RIGHT TURN, DRIVER PROCEEDED TO THE NEXT TURN WHILE APPLYING ALL OF THE PHYSICAL PRESSURE SHE COULD MUSTER, WHICH FINALLY SLOWED THE CAR TOP THE POINT IT COULD BE TURNED AND STOPPED. IF THIS BRAKE FAILURE HAD OCCURRED WHEN THERE WAS STOPPED TRAFFIC, AN ACCIDENT WOULD HAVE CERTAINLY OCCURRED. THE PROBLEM WAS A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF THE POWER BRAKES HYDRAULIC BOOSTER. ADDITIONALLY, NO WARNING LIGHT EVER CAME ON BEFORE, DURING OR AFTER THE BRAKE FAILURE. THE BMW SERVICE DEPARTMENT SAID THAT THERE ARE WARNING LIGHTS FOR LOW FLUID AND LOW PADS, BUT NOT FOR BOOSTER FAILURE, WHICH IS UNBELIEVABLE. *TR

Positive 2010 Bmw Z4 car reviews

  1. Rusty Ratke 2025-02-15

This is my first BMW purchase and I'm thrilled with the vehicle. Driving it has been a real pleasure. The driving and steering response is excellent, and I'm getting great mileage at 23.5 city and highway. It's a shame that the vehicle doesn't use regular gasoline, but the run-free tires are a great option. One thing to note is that if low tire pressure occurs, the dashboard only indicates low pressure and doesn't specify which tire is low.

  2. Westley Muller 2025-02-11

I've always wanted a convertible, but I never really enjoyed soft tops. I've always loved BMWs and even owned a 325i, so when they released the new BMW Z4, I was really excited. Even though the car is totally impractical and overpriced, my local dealer offered me a killer lease deal of $500 for a loaded SDrive35, and BMW finance also kicked in a rebate. I thought to myself, 'You only live once,' and drove off in my first convertible. The car is absolutely stunning, a true beauty in Deep Sea Blue Metallic and Ivory White Nappa Leather, just like in the ads. I constantly get looks and compliments, and in this economy, the car is a rare eye-catcher. As any BMW owner knows, driving is always a top priority.

  3. Alexandre Fahey 2025-01-22

I'm thrilled to share that my first roadster has exceeded all my expectations! It's fast, handles great, and more. While some people try to compare it to the Boxter, I think it's important to note that BMW wasn't trying to compete with that car. Instead, the Z4 is an everyday car that can also transform into a sports convertible, making it a perfect choice for those who want the best of both worlds. It's definitely a head-turner and you'll feel like a rock star driving it. Plus, the safety features are top-notch and have already saved me from trouble. Overall, I highly recommend this car!

  4. Skye Ondricka 2025-01-22

Congratulations on your new Z4! It's great to hear that you're enjoying every minute of owning it. The 2009 model is definitely a step up from the 2006, with improved looks, ride, comfort, and handling. The build quality is also excellent. Your choice of white with black leather sounds like a winning combination. It's impressive that you're getting 23 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on road trips. It sounds like you've had some amazing cars in the past, including two Porsches, but the Z4 is the most fun car you've owned. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

  5. Will Batz 2025-01-13

When I was younger, I used to own two MGs and two Vettes, but I have to say that the Z4 is in a league of its own. I've only had it for a week, and unfortunately, I can't drive it every day because I need my Prius to get into the HOV lane. However, the car handles superbly and is incredibly comfortable. Even with the top up, the car looks just as good as it does with the top down. I opted for the upgraded stereo, and it rocks! I have all of the packages except for the convenience package, but that's okay since the car is still amazing. I'm impressed with how much BMW has improved the iDrive - it's fun to use, especially with voice commands. It may take a couple of years to learn how to operate, but it's worth it.
