1993 Dodge Stealth problems
The Mitsubishi 3000GT is a front-engine, all-wheel/front-wheel drive grand touring/sports car manufactured and marketed by Mitsubishi from 1990 until 2000 over three different generations. Manufactured in a three-door hatchback coupé body style in Nagoya, Japan, the 2+2 four-seaters were marketed in the Japanese domestic market (JDM) as the GTO, and globally as 3000GT. In North America, it was sold both as the Mitsubishi 3000GT (1991–1999) and the Dodge Stealth (1991–1996), a badge engineered, mechanically identical captive import. As a collaborative effort between Chrysler and Mitsubishi Motors, Chrysler was responsible for the Stealth's exterior styling.
The car was based on Mitsubishi's Sigma/Diamante and retained their transverse mounted 3-liter, 24-valve V6 engines and front-wheel-drive layout. The GTO's engines were naturally aspirated or with twin-turbochargers and were also available with active aerodynamics (automatically adjusting front and rear spoilers), four-wheel-steering, full-time all-wheel-drive and adaptive suspension.
Mitsubishi marketed a retractable hardtop variant, which were engineered and converted from coupé models in California by ASC, and sold as the GT Spyder or VR4 Spyder for model years 1993–1995. These were the first fully automated retractable hardtop marketed since the 1959 Ford Skyliner.
The JDM model took its name from the Galant GTO, a two-door hardtop coupé marketed by the company in the early 1970s, which in turn took its name from the Ferrari 250 GTO, short for Gran Turismo Omologata – "Omologata" signifying that it met motorsport homologation requirements.

THIS IS A NOT A EASY TASK FOR MOST OWNERS AND IS NOT LIST IN REQUIRED MAINTANCE IN ANY OF THE MANUELS. SO IT IS SELDOM DONE. - Summary: THIS TRANSMISSION PROBLEM HAS OCCURED SINCE THE 3000GT AND STEALTH TWIN TURBO HAS BEEN OUT. WE'VE HAD MANY PEOPLE ON THERE 4TH AND 5TH TRANSMISSION ALREADY AND HAVE GONE OUT AS EARLY AS 20,000 MILES. THIS IS A VERY COSTLY AND DANGEROUS SITUATION. AS IN MY CASE IT WOULD HAVE COSTED ME $5800 JUST FOR A NEW TRANSMISSION QALONE SINCE REPLACEMENT PARTS ARE NOT AVAIL. AND IF THE TRANNY WOULD HAVE GOING, IN MY INSTANCE, ALL 4 TIRES WOULD HAVE LOCKED UP ON ME SINCE ITS AN AWD SYSTEM. THIS COULD CAUSE A VERY LIFE THREATING PROBLEM.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 1993 Dodge Stealth.

- Components: POWER TRAIN:TRANSFER CASE (4-WHEEL DRIVE)
- Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES BUILT BY MITSUBISHI MOTOR CORPORATION FOR DAIMLERCHRYSLER, A CONDITION EXISTS THAT ALLOWS OIL TO LEAK FROM THE ALL-WHEEL DRIVE TRANSFER CASE.
- Consequence: LOW OIL LEVELS IN THE TRANSFER CASE COULD CAUSE BEARING DAMAGE AND RESULT IN DRIVE TRAIN LOCKUP, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE TRANSFER CASE FOR INDICATIONS OF OIL LEAKAGE. VEHICLES THAT HAVE NO OIL LEAKAGE WILL HAVE THE TRANSFER CASE OIL CHANGED. VEHICLES THAT HAVE OIL LEAKAGE WILL HAVE THE TRANSFER CASE RESEALED OR REPLACED IF NECESSARY. OWNER NOTIFICATION IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DECEMBER 2, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT DAIMLERCHRYSLER AT 1-800-853-1403.

- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS
- Summary: UNDER CONDITIONS OF FULL LOCK STEERING AND FULL SUSPENSION TRAVEL, THE LEFT OR RIGHT FRONT WHEEL-SIDE BRAKE HOSE CAN CRACK, RESULTING IN BRAKE FLUID LEAKAGE.
- Consequence: BRAKE FLUID LEAKAGE WILL CAUSE ILLUMINATION OF THE BRAKE WARNING LAMP AND REDUCTION IN BRAKING EFFECTIVENESS INCREASING THE RISK OF A VEHICLE ACCIDENT.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE LEFT AND RIGHT FRONT WHEEL-SIDE BRAKE HOSES WITH REVISED HOSE ASSEMBLIES.

The car drives like a dream. Everyone who gets in it says that it rides like a Cadillac. Driving it is extremely fun and comfortable, and everywhere I go, people turn their heads. The car has been great and reliable, and its DOHC 24 valves do their job really well. This is the best year of all the Stealths since it is the last year of that body style too.

Although it may not be the fastest car on the road, it certainly turns heads and is an absolute blast to drive. While I do wish I had a manual, I couldn't pass up the price, and even with the automatic transmission, it still packs a punch!

I've always wanted one, so when I had the chance to get one, I had to get it. Once I got in, I experienced overwhelming joy as I pushed on the pedal. Its handling and performance are exactly what I expected it to be.

My car is now ten years old and unfortunately, the ABS just went out. I'm currently shopping for a new car but I'm having trouble finding one that compares to the Stealth!!! This car has been amazing for the past ten years. It's fun to drive, fits tall people, turns heads, and is great in Chicago winters due to its front-wheel drive. The folding down hatch also allows me to fit my bike and anything else inside. I'm really disappointed that Mitsubishi stopped making this car. I would buy a new one in a heartbeat and I'm not ready to give it up yet!

You've made an excellent choice! This car is not only the fastest and coolest for the dollar in the past decade, but it's also unbelievably reliable.

Hey there! I know what you mean, it can be tough when things start to wear out. I've got a '93 myself and it's starting to show its age too. But you know what? It's been a great car up until now and I'm grateful for all the good times we've had together.
