2017 Chrysler 200 problems
The Chrysler 200 is a mid-size sedan that was manufactured and marketed by Chrysler from model years 2011 to 2017 across two generations in four-door sedan and two-door convertible (first generation only) body styles.
The 200 nameplate debuted on the 200C, a prototype hybrid vehicle shown at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit and based on the Chrysler 300. The 200C concept was engineered to accept either traditional gasoline, hybrid or full-electric powertrains.
First generation (2011)
The first generation Chrysler 200 was a restyled, rebadged and re-engineered version of the third generation Chrysler Sebring that began production in 2006. Although the JS platform, of Mitsubishi origins, had been retained, there were many cosmetic and powertrain changes to the 200.
The 2.4 L four-cylinder 173 hp (129 kW) 166 lb⋅ft (225 N⋅m) engine with either a four-speed or six-speed automatic transmission carried over. Chrysler's new Pentastar 3.6 L V6 engine was also offered with a six-speed automatic transmission, generating 283 hp (211 kW) and 260 lb⋅ft (353 N⋅m) of torque. A flex-fuel version of the 3.6 L Pentastar engine was also available. Other changes included stiffer body mounts, revised suspension geometry with a softer ride rate, a new rear sway bar, and upgraded tires. The 200 was also more highly equipped than the Sebring. Chrysler added features such as LED lighting, thicker seat cushioning with higher quality materials, along with new measures to decrease noise, vibration, and harshness.
The Chrysler 200 was manufactured at Sterling Heights Assembly (Sterling Heights, Michigan) and arrived at dealers in December 2010. A 2-door convertible model was added in early 2011 with the same engine choices.
The 200 and its platform mate, the Dodge Avenger, were ranked the "Most American Made" sedans and convertibles by The Kogod Made in America Auto Index in 2013.
According to Edmunds' Acevedot, "by changing the name, Chrysler was able to let its midsize offering ride the coattails of the Chrysler 300 and to encourage consumers to think of the 200 as the younger brother of the flagship 300"; as an all-new generation of the 300 was released at the same time. Acevedot also noted that the name change has the added benefit of distancing itself from its predecessor, a vehicle notorious for quality issues and fleet pervasiveness.
In early 2013, Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne announced that the first generation model will be short lived and a redesigned next generation model would appear in auto shows January 2014.

Common 2017 Chrysler 200 problems
The Chrysler 200, particularly the 2017 model, has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. Here are some of the issues in detail:
- Rough and Jerky Shifting: Many owners of the 2015 Chrysler 200 have found its shifting to be rough, grinding, and causing the vehicle to jerk during shifting. This issue has also been reported in the 2017 model, making the driving experience uncomfortable and potentially leading to safety concerns.
- Heater Problems: The passenger side heater in the 2012 Chrysler 200 has received a wide range of complaints for failing to work properly or at all, particularly on cold days. This issue can affect the comfort of passengers and may not be immediately apparent during a test drive or inspection.
- Engine Stalls: A wide range of 2015 Chrysler 200 owners have filed complaints stating that the car’s engine died while driving, requiring costly repairs to fix. This issue can pose a significant safety concern, especially if it occurs while driving at high speeds or in heavy traffic.
- Battery Issues: Owners of the 2012 Chrysler 200 have reported an issue with the vehicle’s electrical system that causes the battery to frequently go dead, regardless of its age. This issue can lead to inconvenience and additional costs for battery replacement or electrical system repairs.
- Oil Consumption and Leaks: The 2.4-liter engine in the Chrysler 200 has been reported to consume oil excessively, and oil leaks have also been reported. These issues can lead to engine damage if not addressed promptly and may require costly repairs.
- Faulty Thermostat: The 2.4L Multiair engine in the Chrysler 200 has been reported to have a bad thermostat, which can cause the code P0128. Replacing a thermostat can cost from $320 to $450 in a repair shop. If you replace the thermostat at a Chrysler dealer, they might also do the software update for the computer (PCM).
- Suspension and Brakes Problems: Suspension and brakes problems have also been reported in the Chrysler 200. These issues can affect the vehicle's handling and safety, and may require costly repairs.
In summary, the Chrysler 200, particularly the 2015 and 2017 models, has been reported to have several common problems, including transmission failure, rough and jerky shifting, heater problems, engine stalls, battery issues, oil consumption and leaks, faulty thermostat, and suspension and brakes problems. Potential buyers and current owners should be aware of these issues and consider the costs and risks associated with them.

I’ve been to my dealership multiple times and it just seems as if my car is declining after each session. I can’t even remote start my vehicle anymore. There will be times where I am stopped for a period of time and my car will stall and/or glitch out. The Stability Control and Electric Park Brake Trouble Indicators will come on as well as the Anti-lock Brake System Fault and Electric Power Steering Fault Indicators…All at the same time. I will be looking around for Auto Shops that I trust but later down the line, if there is no breakthrough, I will buy another vehicle.

There’s nothing I can do in that moment besides try to get to safety before the car stops in the middle of the road. I’ve brought it in multiple times with no change or information as to what’s causing it. One dealership claimed I just needed an oil change which it didn’t but to prove my point, I brought it in after it stalled 2-3 days after an oil change. At this point, there’s been zero help or care. It’s only a matter of time until it causes an accident. Other owners definitely have this issue as well since they’re reported on here too. Any help? Or do all of us just lose money or potentially more…?

- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: MY 2017 CHRYSLER 200, THAT I PURCHASED ON OCTOBER 8, 2018 HAS STARTED TO JUST SHUT DOWN WHILE I'M DRIVING, WITH NO WARNING. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS ESPECIALLY IN THE TYPE OF BUSY TRAFFIC THAT I DRIVE IN, DAILY. I'M THANKFUL THAT THE TIMES IT DID SHUT OFF, IT HAPPENED IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD, WHILE I WAS SLOWING DOWN TO STOP AT A STOP SIGN, AND BEFORE I'D GOTTEN INTO HEAVY TRAFFIC. IT SHUT DOWN ON DECEMBER 20, 2019 AT A STOP SIGN, AND THE EXACT SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN ON DECEMBER 22, 2019. BOTH TIMES, IT DIDN'T RESTART IMMEDIATELY WHEN I PRESSED THE START BUTTON. IT STALLED FOR A MOMENT THE FIRST TIME, AND PERHAPS 2 MINUTES THE SECOND TIME. I TURNED ON MY EMERGENCY BLANKERS THE 2ND TIME IT HAPPENED, AND I LET OTHER DRIVERS KNOW TO GO AROUND ME BECAUSE IT TOOK A LITTLE LONGER TO RESTART. THIS ISN'T SAFE, NOR IS IT GOOD FOR ME AS A CONSUMER. THAT'S WHY I BOUGHT AN ALMOST NEW CAR SO I WOULDN'T HAVE ISSUES SUCH AS THIS WHILE DRIVING.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-09-24
- VIN: 1C3CCCAB5HN
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
- Summary: I PURCHASED MY VEHICLE BRAND NEW IN 2017 AND STARTED EXPERIENCING ISSUES WITHIN THE FIRST YEAR. THE CAR HAS CUT OFF MULTIPLE TIMES WHILE DRIVING, WITHOUT WARNING, IN THE MIDDLE OF RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC. IT ALSO FREQUENTLY STALLS. I'VE TAKEN MY VEHICLE TO 3 DIFFERENT DEALERSHIPS IN 2 DIFFERENT STATES AT LEAST 10 TIMES. TWO OF THE THREE DEALERSHIPS CLAIMED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS SOME SORT OF FUSE UNDERNEATH THE DRIVER'S SEAT. AFTER THE CAR CONTINUED TO SHUT OFF WITHOUT WARNING, I WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS DUE TO LOW OIL. I'VE CALLED CHRYSLER'S HEADQUARTERS WHO HAS GIVEN ME A FREE OIL CHANGE PACKAGE AND INSTRUCTED ME TO RETURN TO A DEALERSHIP EVERY 500 - 1000 MILES FOR AN OIL CONSUMPTION TEST. THEY KNOW THAT THE CAR IS BURNING AN UNUSUAL AMOUNT OF OIL WHICH IS A CLEAR INDICATION THAT THERE'S A PROBLEM. INSTEAD OF ISSUING A RECALL, THEY CONTINUE TO PUT LIVES IN DANGER BY GIVING THEM BACK THEIR DEATH TRAP OF A CAR AND INSTRUCTING THEM TO CHECK AND GET FREQUENT OIL CHANGES. I'M GUESSING THEIR HOPE IS TO KEEP THE OIL CHANGES GOING UNTIL THE WARRANTY RUNS OUT. SOMEONE'S GOING TO LOSE THEIR LIFE OR GET SERIOUSLY INJURED IN THESE CARS, I JUST PRAY THAT IT'S NOT ME.

2017 Chrysler 200 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2017 Chrysler 200.
- Manufacturer: Chrysler (FCA US LLC)
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING
- Summary: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2018 Dodge Journey, Charger and Durango, RAM 2500, 3500, 3500 Cab Chassis (more than 10,000lb), 4500 Cab Chassis and 5500 Cab Chassis, Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee and Chrysler 300, 2014-2019 RAM 1500, 2015-2018 Dodge Challenger, 2015-2017 Chrysler 200, 2016-2018 RAM 3500 Cab Chassis (less than 10,000 lb), 2017-2018 Chrysler Pacifica and 2018 Jeep Wrangler vehicles. These vehicles are being recalled to address a defect that could prevent the cruise control system from disengaging. If, when using cruise control, there is a short circuit within the vehicle's wiring, the driver may not be able to shut off the cruise control either by depressing the brake pedal or manually turning the system off once it has been engaged, resulting in either the vehicle maintaining its current speed or possibly accelerating.
- Consequence: If the vehicle maintains its speed or accelerates despite attempts to deactivate the cruise control, there would be an increased risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the software, and perform a software flash on the engine or powertrain control module, free of charge. The recall began June 4, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Note: Owners are advised to stop using cruise control until the software update has been performed. In the event that cruise control cannot be disengaged while driving, owners should firmly and steadily apply the brakes and shift the transmission to neutral, placing the vehicle in park once it has stopped.

Positive 2017 Chrysler 200 car reviews

This car is fantastic! It has more than enough power and still has great gas mileage. It handles like a dream and all the creature comforts exceeded my expectations. The cabin is designed with all the controls within reach and the comfort is better than I expected. This is one of the best all around cars I have ever owned. I have recently gone over 40,000 miles and still have not had a single problem with this car.

I absolutely love my 2016 200 S, even though it seems to be an unpopular choice. While the 2.4 engine may not be the fastest, it provides just the right amount of power when needed. The transmission also holds its gears into high rpm upon acceleration, producing a satisfying sound. The car's exterior design is fantastic and the interior layout is very well thought out. I was able to purchase mine used with only 15k miles on it for a great price of 15000 dollars. I would definitely buy it again and again!

I bought this 2016 4-door Chrysler 200 from a used car lot over a year ago when it had only 14,000 miles on it. The Carfax report showed that it had few miles and no issues, and it was from the Tampa Florida area. The local dealer put on new tires and all new brakes/rotors. My wife and I have put 7,000 miles on it, mostly during Covid. It's roomy enough for us, and my wife, who is only 5 feet tall, loves the interior, the quietness, and the V6 performance. We haven't had any mechanical issues, and the gas mileage locally ranges from 21+ to sometimes 28+. We're looking forward to a trip to South Carolina and Florida soon. I love the feel of the road and how quiet it is. The beautiful Vivid Blue paint and spacious trunk are perfect for our luggage.

I have a 200 c awd v6 with every option available on the 200 that they had. It has 78,500 miles on it and I use it as my daily commuter (I drive a lot!). I'm considering buying another one since they are discontinued, so I have a replacement in another 100k or so. The adaptive cruise is awesome, and the v6 is the perfect balance of power and mileage. The 9-speed has been flawless, and the interior and electronics are the best. The only improvement would be USB ports in the back seat area. The AWD is okay in the snow, but it allows a little more spin before it kicks in than I'd like. However, it works great after it locks in. The brakes are good, and the pads last a long time, even though I drive hard! The stock tires are not great, but that's to be expected. The only repairs I've made are a new thermostat housing and gasket due to a leak and a new battery (the factory one was not great). I highly recommend giving this car a test drive if you are in the market. Don't waste your time on the I 4; the v6 is a whole different animal and the only way to go! Please note that some negative reviews are written by people who are not mechanics or professional drivers, so treat their opinion as such and see for yourself.

I've been a loyal Volvo driver for many years, but the maintenance costs have become too expensive. Recently, I decided to switch to a Chrysler 200C. As someone who is used to driving luxury cars, the 200C met all my requirements. After an extensive search, I found the perfect one in Virginia and had it shipped to California. The blue exterior and leather linen interior are absolutely gorgeous! I believe mine is the V6 model with extra paddle shifters, which makes for an exhilarating driving experience. The styling and seating are both wonderful and extremely comfortable. The features are also fabulous, although it did take some time to get used to all the bells and whistles. My whole family loves driving it so much that we've become regulars at the CDJR dealership! In fact, we've purchased several other Chrysler products, including a 2016 Dodge Dart Limited for my daughter, a 2016 Jeep Patriot High Altitude for my son, and a 2020 Ram 1500 Laramie, which is a dream truck. We've had zero issues with any of our Chrysler products and couldn't be happier with them. We recently added another Chrysler product to our family, a 2010 Jeep Commander, which is perfect for our trips to the mountains. It has third-row seats that fit seven people and a V8 Hemi engine. Although it does consume a lot of gas, we still love it! All of our CDJR vehicles are running great, and we couldn't be happier with them!

11 days after owning the car, I had to send it to the dealership because the push-start button and engine light came on. The vehicle decelerates when I drive. I have read reviews of people having the same issues. I'm very worried about owning the car now. I am just waiting for the dealer to finish what they have to do, and then I will make my decision as to whether to keep it or return it. I believe Chrysler can do better.

I'm so glad I rented this car first. I was considering getting one, but after this experience, I don't think I will. Just a heads up, if you do decide to get one, be prepared for the 'Key Fob not Detected' message. The push button start is fine as long as it detects the key fob. The ride is a bit noisy and uncomfortable, and the acceleration is not the best as it hesitates. Personally, I wouldn't rent one again.

I bought the car brand new, but unfortunately, I had to take it back to the dealership multiple times for various issues. During the first month, I had to take it back because the cruise control would slow down going up a small hill and speed up going down. The dealership told me that it was just the nature of the model. A few months later, I had to take it back for problems with the front passenger carpet, which they semi-fixed. However, I had to take it back again a month later for the same reason, and they ended up replacing it. Six months later, I had to take it in for a noise on the nob shifter, which they fixed by replacing a sensor in the shifter. Unfortunately, a couple of months later, while driving down a busy highway, I experienced a sudden drop in speed and all my gauges went haywire. I pulled over and waited a few minutes before attempting to drive again, and the car seemed to be fine. However, the check engine light stayed on, so I took it back to the dealership the following morning. They found that it was a sensor in the transmission and fixed it. But the day I got it back, the transmission wouldn't engage in reverse. I took it back to the dealership, and they had the car for another week, but they couldn't find anything wrong. Since then, the car has been shifting funny, and I had to take it back to the dealership for the carpet issue again. I love the design and looks of the car, but I'm at the point where I don't know what to do anymore. I just know that I don't want this car.

I purchased a brand new limited edition floor model from a reputable dealership. Unfortunately, after only 9 months of ownership, I began experiencing electrical issues that left me stranded on the side of the road. While the vehicle was still under warranty, I had the issue resolved. However, a few months later, I encountered transmission problems. As a result, I have decided to move on from my Chrysler 200. Although I initially loved the car, the numerous issues have become too much to handle. As a parent, safety is my top priority, and I am grateful that my child was not with me during the times I was stranded.

I bought this used vehicle in Arizona back in October 2016. Unfortunately, I've been experiencing some issues with the car shutting down due to low oil levels, which happens quite frequently. It seems to consume oil at a high rate, which is a bit concerning. I usually have to add a quart or two of oil every 2-3 weeks, and I'm not sure where it's going since there are no visible leaks. I've taken it to the dealer at least 7 times, but the issue persists. It can be quite dangerous when the car shuts down in the middle of traffic, especially on the freeway. The dealer says it's to protect the engine, but I'm still worried. I also have a check engine light that's always on, which is quite frustrating. It's intermittent, and the dealer can't seem to get a reading if it's not on. Two weeks ago, the light came on again, and I took it to AutoZone to get a reading since it was closer. It said it was the catalytic converter, and the dealer confirmed it the next day. I returned a week later to have it repaired, and it turned out to be a misfire instead of the catalytic converter. It's quite confusing how both places had the same reading, but it turned out to be something else. The acceleration is also poor, and it slows down when it shouldn't, especially when going up a hill. I've had this car for less than a year, and it's been in and out of the shop most of the time. I wouldn't recommend this vehicle because it's not reliable and can be quite costly. #verydissatisfied
