2012 Chrysler 200 problems

The Chrysler 200 is a mid-size sedan that was manufactured and marketed by Chrysler from model years 2011 to 2017 across two generations in four-door sedan and two-door convertible (first generation only) body styles.

The 200 nameplate debuted on the 200C, a prototype hybrid vehicle shown at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit and based on the Chrysler 300. The 200C concept was engineered to accept either traditional gasoline, hybrid or full-electric powertrains.

First generation (2011)

The first generation Chrysler 200 was a restyled, rebadged and re-engineered version of the third generation Chrysler Sebring that began production in 2006. Although the JS platform, of Mitsubishi origins, had been retained, there were many cosmetic and powertrain changes to the 200.

The 2.4 L four-cylinder 173 hp (129 kW) 166 lb⋅ft (225 N⋅m) engine with either a four-speed or six-speed automatic transmission carried over. Chrysler's new Pentastar 3.6 L V6 engine was also offered with a six-speed automatic transmission, generating 283 hp (211 kW) and 260 lb⋅ft (353 N⋅m) of torque. A flex-fuel version of the 3.6 L Pentastar engine was also available. Other changes included stiffer body mounts, revised suspension geometry with a softer ride rate, a new rear sway bar, and upgraded tires. The 200 was also more highly equipped than the Sebring. Chrysler added features such as LED lighting, thicker seat cushioning with higher quality materials, along with new measures to decrease noise, vibration, and harshness.

The Chrysler 200 was manufactured at Sterling Heights Assembly (Sterling Heights, Michigan) and arrived at dealers in December 2010. A 2-door convertible model was added in early 2011 with the same engine choices.

The 200 and its platform mate, the Dodge Avenger, were ranked the "Most American Made" sedans and convertibles by The Kogod Made in America Auto Index in 2013.

According to Edmunds' Acevedot, "by changing the name, Chrysler was able to let its midsize offering ride the coattails of the Chrysler 300 and to encourage consumers to think of the 200 as the younger brother of the flagship 300"; as an all-new generation of the 300 was released at the same time. Acevedot also noted that the name change has the added benefit of distancing itself from its predecessor, a vehicle notorious for quality issues and fleet pervasiveness.

In early 2013, Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne announced that the first generation model will be short lived and a redesigned next generation model would appear in auto shows January 2014.

  • Summary: As I was waiting for the light to change, my car suddenly shuts off and won't restart. Luckily, some goof Samaritans helped push my vehicle out of traffic. The mechanic close to where the incident took place found that the ASD fuse needed to be replaced and my car started right up. Well my car shut off while waiting for a light a few days later. I will be having my car looked at again however after research it seems to be that the TIPM needs to be replaced. It would be amazing if there was a recall on this as I see so many others having the same issue. This is a HUGE safety concern.

My safety is at a high risk because as I am driving the car will randomly shut off as I am on the highway or I’m just driving down the street. It happens everywhere no matter the distance now mater how much gas is in the tank. I saw an article about a recall on Chrysler due to this electrical problem.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • VIN: 1C3CCBABXCN
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Engine. A dealership charged me thousands of dollars and refused my car of needing to leave the service mechanic shop. Due to a defect of my cylinder head gasket being diagnosed as my car causing a leak. My engine estimates was billed after declining work from the service department explaining to my car was going to blow up. I had to drive with the overheating light comes on from the engine and cooling system defect. The recall was not requested I am complaining has caused a safety issue driving my Chrysler 200 lx. Companies that have serviced the maintenance of my vehicle have billed to fix issues my car don't have. Because the safety recall my vehicle does not offer for cooling symptoms. To breakdown and overheat from paying for service to prevent the problem, repair companies billed fees to prevent declining service, for a safety risk given to me as customer. I have a invoice billing statement could not question dealership why my car hazard to blowing up. When having to pay mechanic for labor not recommendent agreed to afford as paying customer. The problem has reproduced and confirmed by a dealer. After independent service center decline me owing a inspection diagnosis balance. Another company I take it to did not let me out a agreement to decline the mechanic labor. My car has been inspected from the dealership after I explained to them was waiting for a recall to approve the labor fees billed to me. P03 error code and the car inside lights would turn on and off from breaking and turning with the signal light button. Warning signs was overheating light on when the car is not running hot. Along with the temperature gauge going higher after replacing both thermostats and cooling sensor. The car gauge needle near middle hot level was the when the issues first appear as warning. A lot of the symptons of the engine cooling system issues occur during hot weather. Cooling system from the engine defect worsen not prevented over hot or cooler weather.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-20
  • VIN: 1C3CCBCG7CN
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: I will be driving on the freeway, highway in the snow on ice in the summer Wherever, suddenly my engine shuts down. I lose my power steering, my brakes and my safety. I have had my vehicle checked out and nobody can find anything because there are no codes that are being thrown. No dashboard lights going on nothing to indicate there's an issue. The safety of me my mother who rides with me often my grandchildren are at risk. Most recently it happened during a ice rain we had and I can't push on my brakes and my power steering is gone and my car spins in the middle of the road because I have no control over it. The only thing that I have been able to maybe come up with is something in the engine that was discovered maybe in 2015 something about a PCM I believe. So they did recall 2015 and newer vehicles and left all of us with the 2011 to 2014 vehicles to Ben for ourselves. I am making payments on this vehicle and I want to send it to the junkyard. I can't keep pouring money into it trying to figure out why it just stalls. If this isn't present and safety issue to Chrysler then nothing does. I find it hard to believe a company that makes millions of dollars maybe billions a year cannot find it within themselves to recall the engines in these Chrysler 200 vehicles that are having these issues. With that I'm hoping that it won't one day die on me in the middle of traffic and I get hit possibly killed because it just dies and I have no control over it. As soon as I can pay it off I am dumping this car I will not put it on anyone else it isn't fair to them and frankly it wasn't fair to me buying this used from a dealer and having this issue. Oh by the way sometimes it will start right back up if I put it into neutral while I'm driving and hit the key others it will not sometimes it takes 2 hours for it to start again sometimes 10 minutes. I don't know why it does it frankly I don't care I would just like it fixed. I'm single I don't make a lot of money and it's frustratin

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-24
  • VIN: 1C3CCBHG5CN
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: The first time this incident occured I was driving in a residential neighborhood and my horn started randomly honking. Over the past few months the horn will randomly start honking and will continously honk for long periods of time. The horn will blast for miles and there is nothing that I can do to make it stop. I have been pulled over because of this and it's terrible driving at night with the horn blaring. The horn does not work regularly anymore. Then my car started shutting off while driving with no warning lights and total loss of anything that is powered (steering, brakes, etc). I have had to pull over on the freeway in unsafe areas, stuck in the middle of intersections with kids in the car also. After shutting off sometimes I am able to start it right away and it will be fine and other times it wont start and after some period of time it will finally start. I replaced the battery and got a new key fob but neither one has fixed these issues. On top of the random horn blaring and car completely shutting off while driving I now have begun having issues with my transmission. It started randomly not shifting while driving causing me to have to pull over and restart the car after about 5 mins. I have had to pull off the freeway to restart my car. The transmission issue was random at first but I haven't been able to drive my car at all because it will NOT shift after 10 MPH. It is automatic with manual option (which I never use) but it will not shift gears in auto mode or manual. The horn blaring is not only embarrassing but the loudness of it is detrimental to a persons hearing. I have read many reports of this particular car having these same issues and the fact that it completey shuts off without warning and loss of power steering, brakes is extremely dangerous especially when traveling on freeways/highways at 70MPH not only for me and my children but the other drivers around me. I have not had it diagnosed or repaired by a mechanic due to the transmission issue.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-05-31
  • VIN: 1C3CCBAB8CN
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I own a 2012 Chrysler 200, That I Purchased Used but in excellent condition from a reputable dealer, and had a private pre-purchase inspection by a Mechanic (showing no major issues, and I have that report). I drove my car for just around 10-14 months, performed regular maintenance, and had no issues mechanically or otherwise. On the date this Incident occurred I had travelled in the car throughout that day doing some shopping (and the vehicle ran perfectly). We got home around 8:45pm, I dropped my nana off, and got in the car to go get some dinner. While still on my road (which is dark, curvy, has drop offs and no shoulders) as I rounded a curve my car with NO WARNING, completely died. I lost engine power, power steering, lights, headlights, and my brakes became incredibly weak. I could not be seen be seen by other motorists could not use my hazards, and just by dumb luck I made it over the hill with my momentum and had to struggle( NO Pwr. Steeing) to steer across the other lane on a blind curve with no lights, I was nearly hit by another driver, and got into a vacant lot and required my brake + Emrg. Brake to get the car stopped before it hit the structure on the lot. (I know for a fact I had no warning either mechanically or warning light - because I was looking at my dash panel checking speed at the time of failure) I had to have it towed home. A mechanic diagnosed it as a TIPM failure. After researching I found that this was a widely known/occurring failure on several Chrysler branded vehicles, It is a serious safety hazard for obvious reasons - I nearly got hit myself. Chrysler even recalled the faulty TIPM's on some of their BRAND NEW models but refuses to help owners who's cars are 4-5+ years old. And I can't even spend the Ludacris amount of money for a new one because without a recall and resolution of the defect, I'm just buying another Defective TIPM for $1000+ dollars. This is not only a danger to those in defective cars but others on the road.

Negative 2012 Chrysler 200 car reviews

I recently purchased a 2012 Chrysler 200 touring, but unfortunately, I encountered some issues with the car. The back windows were leaking like a waterfall, and the door needed to be taken apart to replace the seals around it. Despite contacting Chrysler for assistance, they were unable to provide any help. As a result, I am now uncertain about my opinion of Chrysler products, as their lack of concern for their customers is concerning. It is important for companies to prioritize their customers and their needs. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I was really excited to find this car as it had everything I was looking for. I purchased my 2012 200 Limited convertible in April 2015 with under 30,000 miles on it for $21,800.00 (a bit overpriced but at the time I was okay with it). During the test drive, we drove at high speed on the highway, with the top down and up, as both a driver and a passenger. Since we travel a lot, one of the top things I was looking for was noise, and the only noise at the time was a small wind coming through the rear driver’s side window. I decided to deal with it since it wasn’t in my ear as a passenger, proving I’m not unreasonable. Then the fun began. I used to have a 2008 Mercury Sable Premier, so I was spoiled. Even though they were both priced at almost $30,000 new, the 200 has nothing on the Sable. I have had several issues since buying it and after several trips to the dealer, I’m left with ‘It’s normal’. The top squeaks when it’s up, sometimes worse than others and after a rain, I cannot put my windows down without a flood of water coming in… consistently. Not drips, a flood. The driver's side window would catch on the trim but they adjusted that. I have a bad wind noise in the car now, not sure where the hell that came from but… IT’S NORMAL, so they say! During this process, I had been emailing Chrysler and they were getting back to me and following up regularly. After I got the final exam done on the car with the same ‘it’s normal for a convertible’, I then responded to Chrysler telling them I expected more from a $30,000.00 car. They did talk to the dealership and agreed… here’s a quote. “They drove your vehicle and found the noise was the air rush on the outside of that car that would be due to it being a convertible. It is a normal noise. He stated you may experience a creek noise as it will move due to it being a convertible. They found no water or air leaks. He stated there is nothing wrong with the vehicle. He stated the body shop adjusted the windows. When you put the windows down on a convertible sports top, it's normal for some water to come in. After carefully reviewing your request and the files on this matter, we agree with the decision made by the dealership. nnI've owned both a hard top and a soft top before. The hard top was a Mercedes, so I can let that slide, but the soft top was either a 96' or 97' Sebring. I wanted a better and quieter car, which is why I got the hard top and the Limited. However, I feel like it was a waste of money. I could have spent less money and gotten the same quality. nnThere are a few other issues that I've noticed. For example, there's a delay in the transmission. After you accelerate and then let off the gas, it hesitates and drags back down. I was told that this is normal, but it's still uncomfortable. Even if it's listed as 'premium' leather, the seats are uncomfortable. The navigation is also a pain in the butt to use, and the gas mileage isn't so good. I wish it had memory seats and a retractable gas pedal (I'm only 4'11

I bought my Chrysler 200 in January 2012, which was my first new car purchase. Although I've had fewer problems with the used cars I've owned, my 200 has been reliable with just over 30,000 miles. My first service visit was right after I purchased it because my key fob wasn't working properly. It turned out to be a loose coupler, which took three visits to fix. I also had some nylon string unraveling from below the steering wheel and a knocking in the steering column, which has been fixed multiple times. Lastly, I had to replace the heater core and radiator due to heater failure. Despite these issues, I still enjoy driving my Chrysler 200.

I purchased the car as certified used with 14,000 miles on it. Everything was fine until we reached 34,000 miles and noticed some jerking from the transmission. We took it to the dealer, but they couldn't recreate the issue. They suggested checking the transmission fluid, which was about a quart and a half short. Unfortunately, the jerking persisted even after visiting multiple transmission shops and speaking with the dealer. It took about 6 months to a year before they finally believed me and had me bring it in. After about 6 hours, they called and informed me that the bearing in the transmission had failed. To my surprise, they repaired it with new parts instead of replacing the entire transmission. However, a year later, the same jerking and sluggishness while driving returned. I contacted the company, but they were no help. The dealership (Galeana Chrysler of Columbia, South Carolina) was also unhelpful, with the salesmen even blaming my mother for signing the paperwork. Unfortunately, no one could give me an answer for why the transmission was so low on fluid. As a result, I have decided to never purchase another Chrysler or from that dealership again, or any dealer they own.

The 2012 Chrysler 200 has been a disappointing purchase for me. Despite keeping up with all maintenance and driving it carefully, I have had to spend a significant amount of money on repairs over the past three years. The car has experienced numerous malfunctions, including issues with the heater core, alternator, radiator hose, thermostat housing, transmission, master switch, tire pressure gauge, brakes, and AC fan. Additionally, the driver seat headrest unexpectedly popped out and hit me in the back of the head. Overall, I cannot recommend this car to anyone as it has proven to be a costly investment.

Nice handling and great looking. Tough enough for snow and ice.

I have a 2012 Chrysler 200 Limited with about 3,200 miles on it. This car is an excellent value, loaded with features, including a great V6 engine and a quiet interior. The ride is smooth, and the fit and finish are great. The beautiful cherry red paint is a nice touch. I love the UConnect radio/phone, and I learn something new about it every time I'm in the car. It's easy to learn to operate with steering wheel controls, and the sound system is fantastic. I strongly recommend this car because of its value and what seems to be great quality.

  3. Bo McKenzie 2024-09-14

This car has many features that I wouldn't have thought of, but now I can't live without them! Notably, the driving comfort is excellent, especially for someone like me who is 5'3''. The seat can be raised up or down, the wheel can be adjusted in/out as well as up/down, and the seat belt can be lowered to a comfortable shoulder height. The adjustable seat also provides great visibility when sitting up high. All of these features can be easily changed for my taller husband (if I ever let him drive). The car is also fun to drive, with a sharp interior and great handling. The only issue I have experienced is pulling to the right, which I am calling about today. I hope they are as great about fixing it as they were about selling it! Overall, this car offers a lot of value for the money and I had a great buying experience.

I love this car! No regrets.

  5. Jed Fisher 2024-08-10

After driving my favorite car of all time, an Oldsmobile Aurora, for many years, my family and I decided to purchase a Hyundai Sonata. Although I missed many of the comforts of the Aurora, such as climate control, sun roof, and V6 engine, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Chrysler 200 was priced far below the competition. While this car would not have been my first choice, after driving it for 13,000 miles, I can confidently say that I have not found another car that I would choose over this one for the money. Overall, it is the best value. Although I do miss the super quiet Cadillac NorthStar engine and silky smooth automatic transmission in my Aurora, I am still very happy with my purchase.
