Chrysler 200 problems

The Chrysler 200 is a mid-size sedan that was manufactured and marketed by Chrysler from model years 2011 to 2017 across two generations in four-door sedan and two-door convertible (first generation only) body styles.

The 200 nameplate debuted on the 200C, a prototype hybrid vehicle shown at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit and based on the Chrysler 300. The 200C concept was engineered to accept either traditional gasoline, hybrid or full-electric powertrains.

First generation (2011)

The first generation Chrysler 200 was a restyled, rebadged and re-engineered version of the third generation Chrysler Sebring that began production in 2006. Although the JS platform, of Mitsubishi origins, had been retained, there were many cosmetic and powertrain changes to the 200.

The 2.4 L four-cylinder 173 hp (129 kW) 166 lb⋅ft (225 N⋅m) engine with either a four-speed or six-speed automatic transmission carried over. Chrysler's new Pentastar 3.6 L V6 engine was also offered with a six-speed automatic transmission, generating 283 hp (211 kW) and 260 lb⋅ft (353 N⋅m) of torque. A flex-fuel version of the 3.6 L Pentastar engine was also available. Other changes included stiffer body mounts, revised suspension geometry with a softer ride rate, a new rear sway bar, and upgraded tires. The 200 was also more highly equipped than the Sebring. Chrysler added features such as LED lighting, thicker seat cushioning with higher quality materials, along with new measures to decrease noise, vibration, and harshness.

The Chrysler 200 was manufactured at Sterling Heights Assembly (Sterling Heights, Michigan) and arrived at dealers in December 2010. A 2-door convertible model was added in early 2011 with the same engine choices.

The 200 and its platform mate, the Dodge Avenger, were ranked the "Most American Made" sedans and convertibles by The Kogod Made in America Auto Index in 2013.

According to Edmunds' Acevedot, "by changing the name, Chrysler was able to let its midsize offering ride the coattails of the Chrysler 300 and to encourage consumers to think of the 200 as the younger brother of the flagship 300"; as an all-new generation of the 300 was released at the same time. Acevedot also noted that the name change has the added benefit of distancing itself from its predecessor, a vehicle notorious for quality issues and fleet pervasiveness.

In early 2013, Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne announced that the first generation model will be short lived and a redesigned next generation model would appear in auto shows January 2014.

Common Chrysler 200 problems

The Chrysler 200 is a mid-size car that has gained popularity for its luxurious features and high performance. However, like any vehicle, it has experienced common problems that owners have reported over the years. This article will delve into these issues, focusing on the model years that have received the most complaints.

The 2015 Chrysler 200 has received the most complaints of any model year, with engine problems being the worst category.

Another issue with the 2015 Chrysler 200 is rough shifting with the 9-speed automatic transmission. This problem has been reported by many owners, who describe the shifting as rough, grinding, and causing the vehicle to jerk during shifting.

Transmission failure is another problem that has been reported for the 2015 Chrysler 200. This issue renders the vehicle inoperable and is costly to fix, as it affects the car's engine and powertrain.

The 2015 Chrysler 200 also has issues with the engine that cause the car to stutter and lurch forward when the gas is applied, making it difficult to predict how the car will react during acceleration and creating a concerning safety hazard.

In addition to the 2015 model year, the 2012 Chrysler 200 has also received a high number of complaints, with the heater not working on the passenger side being the most reported problem.

Other issues reported for the Chrysler 200 include oil consumption in the 2.4-liter engine, oil leaks, a failed thermostat, suspension and brakes problems, and coolant leaks.

In conclusion, while the Chrysler 200 is a popular and high-performing mid-size car, it has experienced several common problems that owners have reported. The 2015 and 2012 model years have received the most complaints, with engine problems, rough shifting, transmission failure, and heater issues being the most frequently reported problems. It is essential to be aware of these issues and consider them when purchasing a used Chrysler 200.

Chrysler 200 2013
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-11
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-24
  • VIN: 1C3CCBBB0DN
  • Components: SEATS
  • Summary: While driving, the safety mechanism on my driver's seat headrest malfunctioned and launched forward. I was distracted for a minute after while I tried to figure out what just happened. At first I thought someone rear ended me until I saw there was no one behind me. I saw what happened to the headrest after I pulled into a gas station. I didn't take it to a mechanic because they would've wanted over $700 to replace it, which I can't afford. I replaced it myself with a headrest I bought on EBay. I still have the malfunctioned headrest because I'm not sure at this point what to do with it. There was no prior warning of any kind.

  • Summary: The contact owns a 2013 Chrysler 200. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked and turned off the contact heard a loud explosion coming from the vehicle. The contact noticed that the front passenger's side headrest had exploded and separated with no warning light illuminated. No injuries were sustained. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the Occupant Restraint Control failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 46,000.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-04
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-12
  • VIN: 1C3CCBAB1CN
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: As I was waiting for the light to change, my car suddenly shuts off and won't restart. Luckily, some goof Samaritans helped push my vehicle out of traffic. The mechanic close to where the incident took place found that the ASD fuse needed to be replaced and my car started right up. Well my car shut off while waiting for a light a few days later. I will be having my car looked at again however after research it seems to be that the TIPM needs to be replaced. It would be amazing if there was a recall on this as I see so many others having the same issue. This is a HUGE safety concern.

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-06-17
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-11
  • VIN: 1C3CCCAB1FN
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The uconnect/radio is off and it is available for inspection. In some extreme cases, a malfunctioning radio could potentially interfere with other critical vehicle functions, creating a safety hazard. Also it interferes with my A/C & only blows hot air when it chooses to work. It hasn’t been expected by the manufacturer, it’s only been expected audio tech & mechanics & stated they can’t detect the problem. There was no warning signs just a complete shut off & never turned on again
Chrysler 200 2015
  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-02
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-07
  • VIN: 1C3CCCAB9FN
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The radio screen sounded as if it shorted out, went blank, and now my battery dies if I don't run my car every day. My odometer flashes and my engine light is on, but the engine codes that come up are related to the Evap. System Integrity Module, and the Active Grille Shutter that I'm sure need replacement due to age. I'm not sure if there is indeed a short, but my battery has been replaced three times (this time being the fourth) since 2019 which seems excessive leading me to believe that there may be one. When reaching out to my local dealership I am advised to bring in for them to look at which costs $150.00 just for the service department to troubleshoot. I during a previous recall I was informed that it costs $1800 to replace the radio. Upon further review I discovered that I am not the only owner with this same issue. Several owners have has this happen to their vehicles. I believe this is worth looking into.

It is extremely dangerous and seriously needs to be looked into. I have seen several complaints about this. This is very common and needs to be fixed. This is also reoccurring problem that happens in these situations every time.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-12
  • VIN: 1C3CCCAB5FN
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: I took my car in to get my recalls fixed and they are not fixed yet they claim to be fixed on record. One is a transmission sensor and the other is electrical. The issue i am having is my car is shutting off the power to the engine while driving. This is causing serious issues when driving on busy highways and other roadways. I am terrified of my engine stopping on the interstate and getting hit by other car due to being unable to drive my car. This instance has happened once where my engine has stopped randomly while on the highway. The other issue is it will not start, there is an issue with the electrical not sending information over to my cars computer to start it. I have been left stranded late after work some days or unable to drive my car at all. The dealership claims all recalls have been fixed but after going to (2) different places they do not assume they have been fixed due to this being the only cause for this issue to be happening still. The code my car is reading is the P0335 Sensor which has been replaced * i did witness a new one being put in* and throwing a check engine light.

  • Summary: The car randomly stalls while I am driving it. I lose all power to the car and the RPM's go to zero. I have to jiggle the fuse box and turn the key to the on position until I hear the fuel pump kick on, then I can start the car. I can tell when the car will stall on me when the RPM's fluctuate and the car stutters. My safety is put at risk to me and to other people because my car loses power while I am driving it. I lost power to the car four times this morning alone and almost got smashed by a 5th wheel truck. I have lost power on the freeway while my children were in the car with me. My husband is a mechanic and he thinks it is the fuse box that needs to be replaced.

Latest negative Chrysler 200 car reviews

  1. Clemens Littel 2024-11-28

    Vehicle year: 2015

I purchased this car brand new and it had only 18 miles on it. At first, the engine sounded good and the style was beautiful. It felt much more expensive than it actually was. However, I started experiencing some issues such as never-ending rattles from the door and pillar panels, as well as vibrations from the engine that made cups rattle in the cup holders. The 4-cylinder engine now sounds like it has a heavy piston tap when at idle in gear with the AC on, but I was told that it's the 'Multi Air' System and it's perfectly normal. The real problem came with the transmission. During the 500 mile 're-learn' period after they 'update/flash/reset' the car, it drove as normal as it could with so many gears. Once it 'learned my driving', the transmission had a number of added features such as sudden lunges when downshifting, getting stuck in 3rd gear when coming to a stop, and harsh shifts. However, I must say that the car does have some lovely features such as a burst of acceleration halfway through a U-turn and a surge when cruising along at any consistent speed in 4th or 7th gear. Overall, if you decide to buy this car, be aware of these issues and know that it may not be the smoothest ride. Thank you, Chrysler, for the free upgrade and the driver alertness package my car wasn't purchased with. The Uconnect system in my Chrysler 200 has been causing me some trouble. The AC couldn't be controlled and it freezes when I plug my phone into the USB port. Recently, I've been experiencing some strange issues where the Uconnect system messes with my phone if it's plugged in. For example, I'll set the car to play the radio, but it will randomly switch back to playing my phone every 2-3 minutes. It's frustrating because I can't charge my phone without driving in silence with it turned off. I've had to visit the service center 10 times in just 15k miles, which means I've met nearly every service advisor at both dealerships within 35 miles of my house. Despite the poor build quality and customer service standards, I've had the pleasure of speaking with a number of agents working at Chrysler Customer Care, including a lovely lady named TRIVIA who works in the customer resolutions department. Although she's incredibly overworked, she's been helpful in my review of a Lemon Law dispute with the car. I understand why Chrysler is discontinuing the 200 and Dart, but it's a shame that the company will be bleeding money by the time they're done with recalls, buybacks, and bad public relations. I hope that my tax dollars aren't being used to bail them out again.

I recently purchased a 2012 Chrysler 200 touring, but unfortunately, I encountered some issues with the car. The back windows were leaking like a waterfall, and the door needed to be taken apart to replace the seals around it. Despite contacting Chrysler for assistance, they were unable to provide any help. As a result, I am now uncertain about my opinion of Chrysler products, as their lack of concern for their customers is concerning. It is important for companies to prioritize their customers and their needs. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I bought my 200 on 2/2/13 and it's not a bad car at all. It has a lot of options and so far, I haven't had any problems with it. However, it only has 3750 miles on it and the 4-cylinder engine's gas mileage is a little disappointing. I wish it was a little wider, but overall, it's a good car. I traded my 2011 Mitsubishi Galant, which had the same size engine, and got 100 miles more on a tank of fuel even though it had the same size tank. If you're going to buy a 200, I recommend getting the V6. Sometimes I think I should have kept my Galant, but only time will tell. It's too early to complain, and if I have any issues with the car, I will let everyone know about it. Also, watch out for the blind spots.

I have the 2.4L Sedan. The transmission shifts extremely rough and slips a lot. The fuel economy is average, with 14 mpg around town and around 21 with cruise control going about 60 mph. Although it is slow and heavy, it does handle very well. Based on my experience, I would not recommend purchasing another Chrysler 200.

I was really excited to find this car as it had everything I was looking for. I purchased my 2012 200 Limited convertible in April 2015 with under 30,000 miles on it for $21,800.00 (a bit overpriced but at the time I was okay with it). During the test drive, we drove at high speed on the highway, with the top down and up, as both a driver and a passenger. Since we travel a lot, one of the top things I was looking for was noise, and the only noise at the time was a small wind coming through the rear driver’s side window. I decided to deal with it since it wasn’t in my ear as a passenger, proving I’m not unreasonable. Then the fun began. I used to have a 2008 Mercury Sable Premier, so I was spoiled. Even though they were both priced at almost $30,000 new, the 200 has nothing on the Sable. I have had several issues since buying it and after several trips to the dealer, I’m left with ‘It’s normal’. The top squeaks when it’s up, sometimes worse than others and after a rain, I cannot put my windows down without a flood of water coming in… consistently. Not drips, a flood. The driver's side window would catch on the trim but they adjusted that. I have a bad wind noise in the car now, not sure where the hell that came from but… IT’S NORMAL, so they say! During this process, I had been emailing Chrysler and they were getting back to me and following up regularly. After I got the final exam done on the car with the same ‘it’s normal for a convertible’, I then responded to Chrysler telling them I expected more from a $30,000.00 car. They did talk to the dealership and agreed… here’s a quote. “They drove your vehicle and found the noise was the air rush on the outside of that car that would be due to it being a convertible. It is a normal noise. He stated you may experience a creek noise as it will move due to it being a convertible. They found no water or air leaks. He stated there is nothing wrong with the vehicle. He stated the body shop adjusted the windows. When you put the windows down on a convertible sports top, it's normal for some water to come in. After carefully reviewing your request and the files on this matter, we agree with the decision made by the dealership. nnI've owned both a hard top and a soft top before. The hard top was a Mercedes, so I can let that slide, but the soft top was either a 96' or 97' Sebring. I wanted a better and quieter car, which is why I got the hard top and the Limited. However, I feel like it was a waste of money. I could have spent less money and gotten the same quality. nnThere are a few other issues that I've noticed. For example, there's a delay in the transmission. After you accelerate and then let off the gas, it hesitates and drags back down. I was told that this is normal, but it's still uncomfortable. Even if it's listed as 'premium' leather, the seats are uncomfortable. The navigation is also a pain in the butt to use, and the gas mileage isn't so good. I wish it had memory seats and a retractable gas pedal (I'm only 4'11

*** May 2016 Update Still purring at 18,700 miles. The upper backrest of the driver's seat squeaks. Every little change in throttle and braking elicits a reminder that Chrysler needs a wee bit more development budget. The seats are brilliantly comfortable and contribute to forgetting the noise. The sunglasses holder also makes an occasional annoying rattle sound. Everything else is still awesome. Engine, AWD, fabulous dash, huge trunk and head-turning bodywork and wheels make this a truly enjoyable daily driver. A Benz owner asked me if it was a Tesla! *******Purchased new in May '15 and have 12,250 as of Nov 1st so yes, I have piled on the miles. Traded in an aging '09 Audi A8L, so my basis for comparison is a highly ranked luxury sedan. Driving DynamicsThere is a bit of a mixed bag here. The star of the show is the engine. Step on it, and it pulls. Let up, step on it again, and it pulls harder. Cruising at 90 and stomping on it gets you to 110+ RIGHT NOW. It is amazing. Every bit as fast as the Audi A8L. The brakes are confident with minimal if any fade. Handling is good, not great. The car has some issues with reliability, as there is no way to know how it will hold up in the long run. Additionally, the rearview mirror is quite large and can obstruct the view of SUVs at intersections. However, despite these concerns, the car is still a great choice for those who are not too tall or heavy. It is unfortunate that Chrysler has moved production to Mexico and kept their lease residuals high, making it difficult to trade in the car for a good value. On the styling front, some may find it difficult to distinguish the 200 from other cars on the road. However, I have found that my new Cadillac CTS4 with Performance Package is highly distinctive and runs circles around the 200. When searching for a car for my daughter, I found that used Chrysler 200s' in the 35-50k range were selling for $13-$15,000, which reinforces my decision to switch to a Cadillac. While it is sad to say goodbye to American cars, I have found that the Audi A8 is a car that epitomizes fine motoring.

Hi there! I wanted to share with you that I've been driving this car since it first came out in 2015, and I'm happy to report that it's still going strong with the original engine and transmission even after 200,000 miles!

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your car so far! The interior definitely has a luxurious feel and the exterior is sleek as well. It's great that both you and your fiance appreciate the horsepower. I understand that the gas mileage could be better, but overall it sounds like you made a good choice. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

The hard top convertible is really convenient, quiet, secure and has a great Wow factor! I am the 3rd owner and purchased it at 65k miles privately. It seems to have been well cared for. The V6 is pretty good, although I wish they had developed the 8 speed AT earlier or given it maybe 20 more HP. But it is definitely adequate. As one reviewer mentioned, the interior lighting lacks safety lights on the doors and lights under the dash, as well as dim trunk lighting. I'm not sure why, with all the LEDs and attention to detail, they missed that. But I bought some bright LED license plate lights that are tiny. She's about to get a lighting upgrade! I've owned it for a year and put new rear brakes and Kuhmos all around. When it's stored for long periods, the steering pops a bunch. But I discovered that when I was driving it daily, the popping went away after a week or so. It's a super looking and riding vehicle. It's my all-time favorite! I'm even enjoying the refinement over the raw power of the old 'vette. It's been the right car for the right time.

The Chrysler 200C is a fantastic vehicle. It offers more performance than most people will ever need, thanks to its V6 engine. It's zippy and still manages to average around 27mpg on 75mph trips and 23mpg around town. The fit and finish are superb, and the upgraded premium leather has to be seen to be believed. The Mocha brown is one of the best colours available in the car market, regardless of price. The road handling is perfect, and the car's forward anti-collision, distance control cruise control, and self-parking features have to be experienced to be truly appreciated. It's a truly great car and the best buy out there - bar none.
