Chrysler 200 problems

The Chrysler 200 is a mid-size sedan that was manufactured and marketed by Chrysler from model years 2011 to 2017 across two generations in four-door sedan and two-door convertible (first generation only) body styles.
The 200 nameplate debuted on the 200C, a prototype hybrid vehicle shown at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit and based on the Chrysler 300. The 200C concept was engineered to accept either traditional gasoline, hybrid or full-electric powertrains.
First generation (2011)
The first generation Chrysler 200 was a restyled, rebadged and re-engineered version of the third generation Chrysler Sebring that began production in 2006. Although the JS platform, of Mitsubishi origins, had been retained, there were many cosmetic and powertrain changes to the 200.
The 2.4 L four-cylinder 173 hp (129 kW) 166 lb⋅ft (225 N⋅m) engine with either a four-speed or six-speed automatic transmission carried over. Chrysler's new Pentastar 3.6 L V6 engine was also offered with a six-speed automatic transmission, generating 283 hp (211 kW) and 260 lb⋅ft (353 N⋅m) of torque. A flex-fuel version of the 3.6 L Pentastar engine was also available. Other changes included stiffer body mounts, revised suspension geometry with a softer ride rate, a new rear sway bar, and upgraded tires. The 200 was also more highly equipped than the Sebring. Chrysler added features such as LED lighting, thicker seat cushioning with higher quality materials, along with new measures to decrease noise, vibration, and harshness.
The Chrysler 200 was manufactured at Sterling Heights Assembly (Sterling Heights, Michigan) and arrived at dealers in December 2010. A 2-door convertible model was added in early 2011 with the same engine choices.
The 200 and its platform mate, the Dodge Avenger, were ranked the "Most American Made" sedans and convertibles by The Kogod Made in America Auto Index in 2013.
According to Edmunds' Acevedot, "by changing the name, Chrysler was able to let its midsize offering ride the coattails of the Chrysler 300 and to encourage consumers to think of the 200 as the younger brother of the flagship 300"; as an all-new generation of the 300 was released at the same time. Acevedot also noted that the name change has the added benefit of distancing itself from its predecessor, a vehicle notorious for quality issues and fleet pervasiveness.
In early 2013, Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne announced that the first generation model will be short lived and a redesigned next generation model would appear in auto shows January 2014.

Common Chrysler 200 problems
The Chrysler 200 is a mid-size car that has gained popularity for its luxurious features and high performance. However, like any vehicle, it has experienced common problems that owners have reported over the years. This article will delve into these issues, focusing on the model years that have received the most complaints.
The 2015 Chrysler 200 has received the most complaints of any model year, with engine problems being the worst category.
Another issue with the 2015 Chrysler 200 is rough shifting with the 9-speed automatic transmission. This problem has been reported by many owners, who describe the shifting as rough, grinding, and causing the vehicle to jerk during shifting.
Transmission failure is another problem that has been reported for the 2015 Chrysler 200. This issue renders the vehicle inoperable and is costly to fix, as it affects the car's engine and powertrain.
The 2015 Chrysler 200 also has issues with the engine that cause the car to stutter and lurch forward when the gas is applied, making it difficult to predict how the car will react during acceleration and creating a concerning safety hazard.
In addition to the 2015 model year, the 2012 Chrysler 200 has also received a high number of complaints, with the heater not working on the passenger side being the most reported problem.
Other issues reported for the Chrysler 200 include oil consumption in the 2.4-liter engine, oil leaks, a failed thermostat, suspension and brakes problems, and coolant leaks.
In conclusion, while the Chrysler 200 is a popular and high-performing mid-size car, it has experienced several common problems that owners have reported. The 2015 and 2012 model years have received the most complaints, with engine problems, rough shifting, transmission failure, and heater issues being the most frequently reported problems. It is essential to be aware of these issues and consider them when purchasing a used Chrysler 200.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-11
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-24
- VIN: 1C3CCBBB0DN
- Components: SEATS
- Summary: While driving, the safety mechanism on my driver's seat headrest malfunctioned and launched forward. I was distracted for a minute after while I tried to figure out what just happened. At first I thought someone rear ended me until I saw there was no one behind me. I saw what happened to the headrest after I pulled into a gas station. I didn't take it to a mechanic because they would've wanted over $700 to replace it, which I can't afford. I replaced it myself with a headrest I bought on EBay. I still have the malfunctioned headrest because I'm not sure at this point what to do with it. There was no prior warning of any kind.

- Date Complaint: 2024-10-12
- VIN: 1C3CCBAB1CN
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: As I was waiting for the light to change, my car suddenly shuts off and won't restart. Luckily, some goof Samaritans helped push my vehicle out of traffic. The mechanic close to where the incident took place found that the ASD fuse needed to be replaced and my car started right up. Well my car shut off while waiting for a light a few days later. I will be having my car looked at again however after research it seems to be that the TIPM needs to be replaced. It would be amazing if there was a recall on this as I see so many others having the same issue. This is a HUGE safety concern.

- VIN: 1C3CCCAB1FN
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The uconnect/radio is off and it is available for inspection. In some extreme cases, a malfunctioning radio could potentially interfere with other critical vehicle functions, creating a safety hazard. Also it interferes with my A/C & only blows hot air when it chooses to work. It hasn’t been expected by the manufacturer, it’s only been expected audio tech & mechanics & stated they can’t detect the problem. There was no warning signs just a complete shut off & never turned on again

- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-02
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-07
- VIN: 1C3CCCAB9FN
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The radio screen sounded as if it shorted out, went blank, and now my battery dies if I don't run my car every day. My odometer flashes and my engine light is on, but the engine codes that come up are related to the Evap. System Integrity Module, and the Active Grille Shutter that I'm sure need replacement due to age. I'm not sure if there is indeed a short, but my battery has been replaced three times (this time being the fourth) since 2019 which seems excessive leading me to believe that there may be one. When reaching out to my local dealership I am advised to bring in for them to look at which costs $150.00 just for the service department to troubleshoot. I during a previous recall I was informed that it costs $1800 to replace the radio. Upon further review I discovered that I am not the only owner with this same issue. Several owners have has this happen to their vehicles. I believe this is worth looking into.

For example coming up to a red light that turns green before you finish stopping, yield signs or slowing into a turn lane and trying to get across on-coming traffic. It is extremely dangerous and seriously needs to be looked into. I have seen several complaints about this. This is very common and needs to be fixed. This is also reoccurring problem that happens in these situations every time.

- Date Complaint: 2024-09-12
- VIN: 1C3CCCAB5FN
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: I took my car in to get my recalls fixed and they are not fixed yet they claim to be fixed on record. One is a transmission sensor and the other is electrical. The issue i am having is my car is shutting off the power to the engine while driving. This is causing serious issues when driving on busy highways and other roadways. I am terrified of my engine stopping on the interstate and getting hit by other car due to being unable to drive my car. This instance has happened once where my engine has stopped randomly while on the highway. The other issue is it will not start, there is an issue with the electrical not sending information over to my cars computer to start it. I have been left stranded late after work some days or unable to drive my car at all. The dealership claims all recalls have been fixed but after going to (2) different places they do not assume they have been fixed due to this being the only cause for this issue to be happening still. The code my car is reading is the P0335 Sensor which has been replaced * i did witness a new one being put in* and throwing a check engine light.

I can tell when the car will stall on me when the RPM's fluctuate and the car stutters. My safety is put at risk to me and to other people because my car loses power while I am driving it. I lost power to the car four times this morning alone and almost got smashed by a 5th wheel truck. I have lost power on the freeway while my children were in the car with me. My husband is a mechanic and he thinks it is the fuse box that needs to be replaced.

Don't get me wrong, the car is nice and does what it should. It's flashy and high-tech. However, the shifting points are off. Fast acceleration from a stop is horrible. From reverse to drive, it takes a good 3 seconds to process.

We had a 2012 200 convertible with the 4 cylinder that we liked, but upgraded to a 2014 200 convertible with a V6 that we love. It's my wife's daily driver and our summer fun car. It works well in the snow too, since it's FWD! The suspension was improved in 2013 and with the added power of the 6 cylinder, it makes for a much better overall driving experience. This is the last year for the convertible, so we plan on keeping it for a long time as nothing else comes close. By the way, we bought this certified pre-owned with just 12,000 miles for only $18,500.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 2013 200 that I bought back in 2015. It was an ex-rental car from Hertz, so it had a few miles on it, but all the maintenance was up to date. The best part? It was under $10,000! I had been looking for a car with the pentastar 3.6 engine, and I have not been disappointed. It's a great engine that gives almost 300 hp on a small car, and the 200 accelerates fast and smooth. The gas mileage is only a tiny bit more than the 2.7, which is fantastic. I have never had any trouble with it mechanically in 70,000 miles. However, some of the interior and body work appears cheap and shoddy. In particular, the trunk latch went out, and there is no external keyhole on the trunk, which is a bit frustrating. But, I found a cheap solution! I ran some cable from the front seat to the trunk and attached it to the emergency trunk release. Just give it a tug, and it opens! The battery is in a terrible place down by the front driver-side wheel, and the light bulbs are an absolute nightmare to replace, unless you have flexible octopus arms. Despite all of this, that engine and the 6-speed shifter are beautiful. It's definitely worth keeping!

When I started shopping, I didn't even consider the 200. However, after owning it for 6 weeks and driving 1700 miles, I couldn't be happier with my decision. I absolutely love the uConnect system, which is far superior to anything else I've used. The rotary shift and eParking brake are conveniently placed and add a lot of storage under the center console. The SafetyTec package includes all sorts of tech that still amazes me. The ride is super quiet, and it's clear that a lot of thought went into reducing road noise. The car has a high-quality feel, and the wood accents are a nice touch. However, what really impresses me is how tightly everything fits together, which shows that Chrysler did a great job with this car.

When I first bought my car, I noticed a flapping noise coming from the dashboard. After taking it to the mechanic, I found out that the rotator fan was broken. Although I thought the issue was resolved after replacing it, I was wrong. Every time I turn on the heat during cold weather, the car makes a loud and annoying flapping noise for about two minutes. Additionally, the heat gradually gets colder on the passenger side. During the first winter, I had to pay $900 for a new heater core, which fixed the issue for that season. However, the problem resurfaced the following winter. Despite the warranty on the heater core, the shop claimed that the difference in temperature on the passenger side was only about 5 degrees, which was not true. In icy conditions, only the driver's side window would defrost. After researching online, I discovered that many other people have experienced the same issue with the heat not working correctly. Despite this problem, the car is great in every other aspect. If you live in a warm climate, I would definitely recommend purchasing it. However, if you live in a cold climate, I would advise against it.

I have experienced a few issues with my car after driving it for 9 months and covering 22,500 miles. The engine has shut down at red lights twice in the past month. After researching online, I discovered that many 2011 V-6 owners are experiencing the same problem. Unfortunately, Chrysler has not been able to identify the root cause of this issue. Additionally, I have noticed some front-end noise and overheating, which was fixed after discovering a crack in the overflow tank. Considering that I spent $24,000 on this car in November 2011, I believe it should not have any problems. I will keep you updated on any further developments. Lastly, I have noticed that the center armrest keeps moving when I rest my arm on it, and the transmission does not shift smoothly.

I really like the look of the new 200, which is what drew me to it. I wasn't in the market for an expensive car, but this one met my needs. The car drives decently, with good handling, brakes, and features. However, there are some issues with the computer/transmission relationship that can be frustrating. At times, the car doesn't seem to know which gear it wants to be in and can hesitate when you need acceleration the most. I've found a solution to this problem, though. When driving in stop and go traffic or around town, I switch to 'L' or low gear. While this does decrease my gas mileage slightly, it greatly improves the power and acceleration of the car. On the open highway, 'D' works just fine. Overall, I have some issues with the car, but I've found ways to work around them. I hope this information is helpful to you.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2011 Chrysler 200 LX that I purchased used 4 months ago. Overall, I think it's a good car with great handling, decent speed for a 4 cylinder, and impressive gas mileage. However, I did notice an issue with the cruise control right after I bought it. Sometimes it would work, and sometimes it wouldn't, which was frustrating. After taking it to the local Chrysler dealership a few times, they finally acknowledged the problem. It turned out to be an issue with the wiring in the steering wheel. The Chrysler technician mentioned that it looked like someone had been in there before, but there was no record of warranty work being done. The technician also mentioned that it could have left the factory like that. Additionally, the brakes tend to squeak in reverse. Overall, I still think it's a great car and I'm happy with my purchase. Let me know if you have any questions!
