Chrysler 200 problems

The Chrysler 200 is a mid-size sedan that was manufactured and marketed by Chrysler from model years 2011 to 2017 across two generations in four-door sedan and two-door convertible (first generation only) body styles.
The 200 nameplate debuted on the 200C, a prototype hybrid vehicle shown at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit and based on the Chrysler 300. The 200C concept was engineered to accept either traditional gasoline, hybrid or full-electric powertrains.
First generation (2011)
The first generation Chrysler 200 was a restyled, rebadged and re-engineered version of the third generation Chrysler Sebring that began production in 2006. Although the JS platform, of Mitsubishi origins, had been retained, there were many cosmetic and powertrain changes to the 200.
The 2.4 L four-cylinder 173 hp (129 kW) 166 lb⋅ft (225 N⋅m) engine with either a four-speed or six-speed automatic transmission carried over. Chrysler's new Pentastar 3.6 L V6 engine was also offered with a six-speed automatic transmission, generating 283 hp (211 kW) and 260 lb⋅ft (353 N⋅m) of torque. A flex-fuel version of the 3.6 L Pentastar engine was also available. Other changes included stiffer body mounts, revised suspension geometry with a softer ride rate, a new rear sway bar, and upgraded tires. The 200 was also more highly equipped than the Sebring. Chrysler added features such as LED lighting, thicker seat cushioning with higher quality materials, along with new measures to decrease noise, vibration, and harshness.
The Chrysler 200 was manufactured at Sterling Heights Assembly (Sterling Heights, Michigan) and arrived at dealers in December 2010. A 2-door convertible model was added in early 2011 with the same engine choices.
The 200 and its platform mate, the Dodge Avenger, were ranked the "Most American Made" sedans and convertibles by The Kogod Made in America Auto Index in 2013.
According to Edmunds' Acevedot, "by changing the name, Chrysler was able to let its midsize offering ride the coattails of the Chrysler 300 and to encourage consumers to think of the 200 as the younger brother of the flagship 300"; as an all-new generation of the 300 was released at the same time. Acevedot also noted that the name change has the added benefit of distancing itself from its predecessor, a vehicle notorious for quality issues and fleet pervasiveness.
In early 2013, Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne announced that the first generation model will be short lived and a redesigned next generation model would appear in auto shows January 2014.

The 2015 Chrysler 200 has received the most complaints of any model year, with engine problems being the worst category.
Another issue with the 2015 Chrysler 200 is rough shifting with the 9-speed automatic transmission. This problem has been reported by many owners, who describe the shifting as rough, grinding, and causing the vehicle to jerk during shifting.
Transmission failure is another problem that has been reported for the 2015 Chrysler 200. This issue renders the vehicle inoperable and is costly to fix, as it affects the car's engine and powertrain.
The 2015 Chrysler 200 also has issues with the engine that cause the car to stutter and lurch forward when the gas is applied, making it difficult to predict how the car will react during acceleration and creating a concerning safety hazard.
In addition to the 2015 model year, the 2012 Chrysler 200 has also received a high number of complaints, with the heater not working on the passenger side being the most reported problem.
Other issues reported for the Chrysler 200 include oil consumption in the 2.4-liter engine, oil leaks, a failed thermostat, suspension and brakes problems, and coolant leaks.
In conclusion, while the Chrysler 200 is a popular and high-performing mid-size car, it has experienced several common problems that owners have reported. The 2015 and 2012 model years have received the most complaints, with engine problems, rough shifting, transmission failure, and heater issues being the most frequently reported problems. - Date Of Incident: 2024-10-11
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-24
- VIN: 1C3CCBBB0DN
- Components: SEATS
- Summary: While driving, the safety mechanism on my driver's seat headrest malfunctioned and launched forward. I was distracted for a minute after while I tried to figure out what just happened. At first I thought someone rear ended me until I saw there was no one behind me. I saw what happened to the headrest after I pulled into a gas station. I didn't take it to a mechanic because they would've wanted over $700 to replace it, which I can't afford. I replaced it myself with a headrest I bought on EBay. I still have the malfunctioned headrest because I'm not sure at this point what to do with it. There was no prior warning of any kind.

- Date Complaint: 2024-10-12
- VIN: 1C3CCBAB1CN
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: As I was waiting for the light to change, my car suddenly shuts off and won't restart. Luckily, some goof Samaritans helped push my vehicle out of traffic. The mechanic close to where the incident took place found that the ASD fuse needed to be replaced and my car started right up. Well my car shut off while waiting for a light a few days later. I will be having my car looked at again however after research it seems to be that the TIPM needs to be replaced. It would be amazing if there was a recall on this as I see so many others having the same issue. This is a HUGE safety concern.

- Summary: The uconnect/radio is off and it is available for inspection. In some extreme cases, a malfunctioning radio could potentially interfere with other critical vehicle functions, creating a safety hazard. Also it interferes with my A/C & only blows hot air when it chooses to work. There was no warning signs just a complete shut off & never turned on again

- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-02
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-07
- VIN: 1C3CCCAB9FN
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The radio screen sounded as if it shorted out, went blank, and now my battery dies if I don't run my car every day. My odometer flashes and my engine light is on, but the engine codes that come up are related to the Evap. System Integrity Module, and the Active Grille Shutter that I'm sure need replacement due to age. I'm not sure if there is indeed a short, but my battery has been replaced three times (this time being the fourth) since 2019 which seems excessive leading me to believe that there may be one. When reaching out to my local dealership I am advised to bring in for them to look at which costs $150.00 just for the service department to troubleshoot. I during a previous recall I was informed that it costs $1800 to replace the radio. Upon further review I discovered that I am not the only owner with this same issue. Several owners have has this happen to their vehicles. I believe this is worth looking into.

It is extremely dangerous and seriously needs to be looked into. I have seen several complaints about this. This is very common and needs to be fixed. - VIN: 1C3CCCAB5FN
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: I took my car in to get my recalls fixed and they are not fixed yet they claim to be fixed on record. One is a transmission sensor and the other is electrical. The issue i am having is my car is shutting off the power to the engine while driving. This is causing serious issues when driving on busy highways and other roadways. I am terrified of my engine stopping on the interstate and getting hit by other car due to being unable to drive my car. This instance has happened once where my engine has stopped randomly while on the highway. The other issue is it will not start, there is an issue with the electrical not sending information over to my cars computer to start it. I have been left stranded late after work some days or unable to drive my car at all. The dealership claims all recalls have been fixed but after going to (2) different places they do not assume they have been fixed due to this being the only cause for this issue to be happening still. The code my car is reading is the P0335 Sensor which has been replaced * i did witness a new one being put in* and throwing a check engine light.

I lost power to the car four times this morning alone and almost got smashed by a 5th wheel truck. I have lost power on the freeway while my children were in the car with me. My husband is a mechanic and he thinks it is the fuse box that needs to be replaced.

Vehicle year: 2012
I was searching for a car that was both enjoyable to drive and fuel-efficient, while also being comfortable and affordable. Specifically, I was interested in finding a convertible to replace my current vehicle. After reading and hearing positive reviews about the 200, I decided to take it for a test drive. I was immediately impressed and knew it was the right choice for me. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with my purchase!

Vehicle year: 2016
I recently purchased this vehicle on July 15th, 2016, and at the time of purchase, I didn't know much about it. However, I was impressed by its great looks inside and out, a fantastic warranty, and all the bells and whistles that came with it. Although it was a little more expensive than the Ford Fusion and other vehicles in its class, I felt that the cost was justified depending on what you were looking for in a new sedan. The exterior of the vehicle is sporty and luxurious in appearance, with a great body fit and a flawlessly applied metallic clear coat paint job. This is a significant improvement compared to other new vehicles that I've purchased in the past. Entering the vehicle can be a tight situation depending on your height, due to the 200 sedan's low roof line, which is low and sloped, and further creates a space and headroom problem for drivers and passengers who are six feet and taller. However, once inside and seated, I found the design and quality of materials used to make up the interior to be of higher quality than those of competitors. It was a mix of sport and luxury that complemented the overall appearance of the vehicle inside and out. The seating was very comfortable and supportive, making long drives less stressful and more satisfying, and short drives more fun. The dash and console have a cockpit-like design, and a dial for gear selection inspired by Jaguar has taken the place of the traditional hand shifter. The placement of instrumentation is good, and everything is within easy sight for the driver. The lighting is a nice touch that is easy on the eyes and enhances the driving experience when driving at night. However, I am disappointed in the speakers for the stereo. I love music, and these speakers are only adequate. I plan to replace them with aftermarket speakers of higher quality and function soon. The sliding armrest on the nice-sized floor console between the driver and passenger was a nice touch and convenient. Since my limited lacked the presence of a CD player, the console will be the right place for me to have one installed. The noise level inside the passenger compartment while in operation is almost zero, except for the normal road noise of tires, which is hard to muffle on any vehicle. There is no wind noise, and the ride is super smooth. The steering is precise, and you get a good feel for the road. Although the interior of the Chrysler 200 is smaller and cramped compared to the Ford Fusion and others, it still provides a great driving experience. Once inside, you'll find it upscale and nice to be in, depending on what you're looking for in a sedan. Keep in mind that this sedan is not for everyone. The trunk space is large for a sedan of this size. One more exterior feature that I love is the projection headlights that automatically self-adjust for night-time driving. Despite past complaints of the 2015 200 sedan, Chrysler has corrected the matter for 2016. From a standing stop, the 4-cylinder performance is normal and adequate, and while highway driving, the 4-cylinder has more than enough power thanks to the 9-speed automatic. The RPMs remain low, and top speeds can be unthinkable. Drive one and see for yourself. Although this is not a muscle car, the 4-cylinder engine is ample and responsive, providing good performance for what it is intended. If you want more power in this sedan, the V-6 comes highly recommended. The call is yours to make. Drive one and see. Overall, I remain optimistic about my purchase and experience. This is one nice sports sedan that turns heads and meets my present expectations. I would definitely recommend this vehicle to a friend.

Vehicle year: 2011
I have owned my 200 for 4 years and I absolutely love her. Recently, I was involved in a 3 car accident where an aggressive driver hit another vehicle head on and spun. His vehicle spun right into the front driver side of my car. She stopped him dead in his tracks and threw out a pillow for my upper body to rest into. When all is said and done, my car will be totaled but when I see the pictures of what she took at 60 miles per hour on a surface street, I am amazed I walked away with just minor bruising. Chrysler made a vehicle that not only looks sophisticated and is fun to drive, but can also save your life. They have built a very sturdy and reliable vehicle. I would buy one for my mom, my child, and myself any day of the week. I am truly impressed!

Gas mileage is right on target. The 4-cylinder engine is not overpowered, but it drives fine for everyday use. The ride is smooth and quiet. The interior is top-notch and very nice. The back seat can hold two adults, and the trunk is truly massive - I doubt any human can fill it up! The large screen option is fantastic and very easy to use.

I have owned three 200/Sebring vehicles, and my experience has been nothing but positive. My 2010 Sebring was mechanically sound, but the interior materials were hard plastic. I drove it for 160K miles without any issues. The 2011 200 was an upgrade, featuring soft-to-touch materials. I had no issues with it and traded it in with 156K miles on it after taking it from one of my salesmen at 82K. The 2014 200 I drive now has also been perfect. I bought it with 8200 miles, and it now has 121K miles. It has been trouble-free, with only normal service items required. It is quiet, solid, handles well, and is comfortable, with excellent fuel mileage. The I-4 engine mated to the 6-speed transmission consistently gets low 30's in terms of fuel economy without any issues. While it is not a race car, it performs well at 80 mph on the interstate, with enough passing power to be safe. I change the oil (blend) once per month (about 4000 miles) and rotate/balance the tires each time. In my opinion, it is a great vehicle, despite the negative reviews from some auto experts who base their opinions on the models they test.

I was given a Chrysler 200 to use for a few months, but unfortunately, I haven't had the best experience with it so far. The transmission has been a bit of a nuisance, and it feels like there might be something wrong with the car, but I was told that this is just how the car operates. Apparently, all the cars in the fleet have the same issue. It can be uncomfortable to drive for long distances due to the constant small acceleration/deceleration changes. Additionally, the ride quality is not great, and I'm not sure if it's due to the transmission or suspension. The layout and type of controls are a bit unconventional, with the shift control knob located near the radio controls, which can be confusing. However, the car does look nice. It's worth noting that the emergency brake is electric, and the car relies heavily on a computer for all controls, which may not be everyone's preference. Overall, I appreciate the opportunity to use the car, but it may not be the best fit for everyone, especially those who are taller than six feet and may find the back seat a bit cramped.

I purchased this car on September 19th, 2015. At first sight, I fell in love with it. It has a sunroof, leather seats, and power everything. The baby blue color is stunning, and it came with new tires and only 35,000 plus miles. The interior leather is awesome, and the heated seats for both driver and passenger are a great feature. The stereo system is fantastic, and the trunk space is pretty big. The gas mileage is about 19 mpg city and 22 mpg highway, which is not bad at all. The air conditioning works great, and the sunroof is a fun addition. If you have big feet, be careful not to hit the hood release easily. I plan to give this car to my daughter for school in 5 years if she keeps good grades. You won't regret purchasing this car, enjoy!

I bought a 2013 Chrysler 200 car for my daughter because of its sporty looks. As a retired car salesman of 24 years, many of which were spent with Chrysler, I didn't buy it new, but it had very low miles on it and plenty of warranty left. Unfortunately, my daughter called me from college complaining about the brake system. I had the brakes inspected several times by several shops, but to no avail. I was informed that the brake system checked out fine and my daughter should feel safe driving the car. There was no repairable solution for this problem. After the warranty expired, the Thermostat Housing Kit cracked, which was a very expensive repair out of pocket. It has not been a good experience, but I still like it for its looks.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share that a few of us who own a 2012 Chrysler 200 are experiencing an issue with the heater core. Unfortunately, there's no heat on the passenger side and it doesn't defrost either. We've been advised that the cost to fix it is around $600-800. It seems like this might be a common issue that could potentially be a recall problem. However, our mechanic says that it's normal for a Chrysler 200. Have you experienced anything similar?

I bought this car with high hopes for its bells and whistles, but unfortunately, I've had some issues with it. Within the first month, the transmission started shifting really hard and the radio wouldn't work properly. I took it back to the dealer and they tried to fix it, but the same issues kept happening. Despite their efforts, the transmission has continued to get worse and the radio has had to be repaired multiple times. While I understand that some issues are beyond the manufacturer's control, the transmission problems have become a safety concern. I'm hopeful that the service department's request to Chrysler will lead to a resolution. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
