2014 Chrysler 200 problems

chrysler logo

The Chrysler 200 is a mid-size sedan that was manufactured and marketed by Chrysler from model years 2011 to 2017 across two generations in four-door sedan and two-door convertible (first generation only) body styles.

The 200 nameplate debuted on the 200C, a prototype hybrid vehicle shown at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit and based on the Chrysler 300. The 200C concept was engineered to accept either traditional gasoline, hybrid or full-electric powertrains.

First generation (2011)

The first generation Chrysler 200 was a restyled, rebadged and re-engineered version of the third generation Chrysler Sebring that began production in 2006. Although the JS platform, of Mitsubishi origins, had been retained, there were many cosmetic and powertrain changes to the 200.

The 2.4 L four-cylinder 173 hp (129 kW) 166 lb⋅ft (225 N⋅m) engine with either a four-speed or six-speed automatic transmission carried over. Chrysler's new Pentastar 3.6 L V6 engine was also offered with a six-speed automatic transmission, generating 283 hp (211 kW) and 260 lb⋅ft (353 N⋅m) of torque. A flex-fuel version of the 3.6 L Pentastar engine was also available. Other changes included stiffer body mounts, revised suspension geometry with a softer ride rate, a new rear sway bar, and upgraded tires. The 200 was also more highly equipped than the Sebring. Chrysler added features such as LED lighting, thicker seat cushioning with higher quality materials, along with new measures to decrease noise, vibration, and harshness.

The Chrysler 200 was manufactured at Sterling Heights Assembly (Sterling Heights, Michigan) and arrived at dealers in December 2010. A 2-door convertible model was added in early 2011 with the same engine choices.

The 200 and its platform mate, the Dodge Avenger, were ranked the "Most American Made" sedans and convertibles by The Kogod Made in America Auto Index in 2013.

According to Edmunds' Acevedot, "by changing the name, Chrysler was able to let its midsize offering ride the coattails of the Chrysler 300 and to encourage consumers to think of the 200 as the younger brother of the flagship 300"; as an all-new generation of the 300 was released at the same time. Acevedot also noted that the name change has the added benefit of distancing itself from its predecessor, a vehicle notorious for quality issues and fleet pervasiveness.

In early 2013, Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne announced that the first generation model will be short lived and a redesigned next generation model would appear in auto shows January 2014.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-25

  • Summary: While driving this vehicle the car would shut down while driving, no ability to brake, to steer. The car would start back up, but the same issues would happen, making it extremely dangerous to drive. This happened on several different occasions. One of my issues with this problem is that Chrysler had the same issue with the 2015 Chrysler 200 and the 2015 was recalled. If you look at sites other than Chrysler, customers had reported the same problem with the 2014 and it looks like Chrysler just swept it under the rug. The dealership is saying that the TIPM system needs to be replaced on my car, for a cost of $3000.00 for a know problem.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-23
  • VIN: 1C3BCBEB1EN
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Both the driver and passaged (front seat) head rests have deployed. When looking inside them (parts are exposed since they have pooped and stayed open in a projected position) broken pieces are visible. Therefore, the headrests cannot be popped back into their proper position. This is extremely dangerous because the headrests could have deployed while we were driving. Also, the headrests no longer serve their purpose of providing safety to people riding in the front seat. There was no car accident or hit from the back. The headrests deployed (popped open like an air bag and cannot be closed) on their own. Many Chrysler 200 owners have complained about this safety issue. Chrysler should do something to help us consumers. I’m disappointed.

AIR BAGS,SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-13
  • VIN: 1C3BCBEBXEN
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEATS
  • Summary: A couple of years ago my passenger head restraint deployed while parked and would not reset. I was charged $652.00 to re place. Chrysler later reimbursed me for this expense and extended my warranty for this for one year. Two days ago the driver side activated while the car was parked. That means the warrant extension had passed. Did some research and this is a common problem caused by the weakening of the plastic that is under pressure of the retaining springs. This problem not only affects the Chrysler 200, but 300s and several keep and Dodge vehicles manufactured between 2010 and 2015. It is just by the grace of God no one has been injured. Mileage was 78000 the first time and 106500 the second time

Thankfully I didn't have any passenger's in my car! I have no warning lamps other than low tire notification that refuses to go away after taking my car several times to make sure the tires are properly inflated and a check engine light that ofcourse came on today. I'm home and searched how to fix it and came across an article stating that I need to report this. I don't have any files. Just a pic of the headrest, current milage and notification lights. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-11-22
  • Number Of Injuries: 3
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 1C3CCBAB6EN
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,ENGINE
  • Summary: My wife and daughters almost died in a car accident due to the apparent failure of this vehicle. We were driving on an HWY at night and the car just died out of nowhere. Dash started to flash and just died. We initially thought that it was the mechanic that had just fixed the car but after an investigation concluded that it was not anything they could have done. My family sustained life-threatening injuries and almost did not make it out alive as thee were rear-ended by a truck. Then on top of it when they were hit no airbags deployed which is what caused the injuries to be so much worse. After reading multiple complaints on NHTSA about the same issue for the same year and make I am baffled that this issue has not been addressed. I almost lost my family.

  • Summary: Vehicle was at detail shop - parked. Employee moved seat to access back and drivers side head rest deployed. There was no collision. Unable to reset, as part is broken. Appears to be a major safety concern which could lead to an accident. I will be attempting to address this issue quickly as it represents a major safety problem. It is available for inspection for now. Had this happened while driving I believe an accident would have resulted. I will be contacting the dealer and an independent shop on Monday. At this time it has not been inspected by anyone official. No warning signs were noted.

2014 Chrysler 200 recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2014 Chrysler 200.

2016-09-15
  • Manufacturer: Chrysler (FCA US LLC)
  • Components: SEAT BELTS:PRETENSIONER
  • Summary: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2011-2014 Chrysler 200, 2010 Chrysler Sebring, 2010-2012 Dodge Caliber and 2010-2014 Jeep Patriot, Compass and Dodge Avenger vehicles. The Occupant Restraint Control (OCR) module may short circuit, preventing the frontal air bags, seat belt pretensioners, and side air bags from deploying in the event of a crash.
  • Consequence: If the frontal air bags, seat belt pretensioners, and side air bags are disabled, there is an increased risk of injury to the vehicle occupants in the event of a vehicle crash that necessitates deployment of these safety systems.
  • Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the OCR, free of charge. Interim letters informing owners that parts are not available yet were mailed on October 26, 2016. The recall began on August 15, 2017. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is S61.

Negative 2014 Chrysler 200 car reviews

  1. Emile Muller 2024-08-16

I am sorry to hear about your experience with your 2014 Chrysler 200. It sounds like you have had a lot of trouble with it and have had to spend a lot of money on repairs. Thank you for sharing your experience and warning others about the potential issues with this car.

  2. Elijah Stoltenberg 2024-07-12

The 2013 Chrysler 200 convertible was purchased from Myrtle Beach Chrysler Jeep for $35,000, including taxes. However, due to a business need for an SUV, the car was sold back to the dealership only six weeks later. Myrtle Beach Chrysler Jeep offered $24,000 for the car, which was declined. After taking the car to Toyota, they offered $14,000 for it. Despite the low mileage, the car was not worth much. Myrtle Beach Chrysler Jeep eventually offered $17,000 for the car, but only because they were the original seller. The car lacked navigation and USB for iPod, and was not fuel-efficient. Overall, it was a regrettable purchase.

  3. Bertrand Tromp 2024-06-03

My journey with this vehicle started off on a positive note. However, after about a year, I began to experience some issues. Unfortunately, I had to replace the TPM and encountered several other problems under the hood. Due to the fact that it is a Chrysler, the parts are quite expensive, and the model itself is not very reliable. The battery placement is also quite inconvenient, and it is recommended to take the car to a mechanic for repairs. Although it was my first car and I have a sentimental attachment to it, I believe that for the price I paid, I could have purchased a better vehicle. It was not worth the investment. UPDATE: I was involved in a total loss accident and, to be honest, I am relieved. This particular version of the car was not up to par.

  4. German Haley 2024-06-01

I bought my 200 on 2/2/13 and it's not a bad car at all. It has a lot of options and so far, I haven't had any problems with it. However, it only has 3750 miles on it and the 4-cylinder engine's gas mileage is a little disappointing. I wish it was a little wider, but overall, it's a good car. I traded my 2011 Mitsubishi Galant, which had the same size engine, and got 100 miles more on a tank of fuel even though it had the same size tank. If you're going to buy a 200, I recommend getting the V6. Sometimes I think I should have kept my Galant, but only time will tell. It's too early to complain, and if I have any issues with the car, I will let everyone know about it. Also, watch out for the blind spots.

  5. Wyman O'Conner 2024-05-02

In November 2013, my husband and I purchased this car. However, just 6 months later, we noticed that the brakes were squeaking and there was a pop noise while driving. Despite taking it to the dealership on three separate occasions, they refused to take any action, citing oxidation as the cause. Even Chrysler was unresponsive to our concerns. As loyal customers of Chrysler and Dodge products, we are disappointed that our warranty was not honored. We strongly believe that a new car should not make such noises. Rest assured, we will be reconsidering our future purchases if this issue is not resolved.

Positive 2014 Chrysler 200 car reviews

  1. Sylvan Ratke 2025-01-06

I purchased my 200 last year after conducting the same research that many of you are currently undertaking. Overall, reviews indicated that it was a good car, although some mentioned some negative aspects. It's important to note that everyone will have a different opinion. Personally, I have a positive view of the car. Previously, I owned a 2008 Chevy Malibu, and this was a significant upgrade. It's fairly fuel-efficient, which is important to me as I drive a lot. I have an all-black model, which looks sleek and stylish. I haven't had to perform any major repairs on it, only regular maintenance such as oil changes, etc. I absolutely love it. It's a great quality car that provides excellent value for money.

  2. Price Hickle 2024-11-16

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your car so far! The interior definitely has a luxurious feel and the exterior is sleek as well. It's great that both you and your fiance appreciate the horsepower. I understand that the gas mileage could be better, but overall it sounds like you made a good choice. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

  3. Louisa Dibbert 2024-11-15

The hard top convertible is really convenient, quiet, secure and has a great Wow factor! I am the 3rd owner and purchased it at 65k miles privately. It seems to have been well cared for. The V6 is pretty good, although I wish they had developed the 8 speed AT earlier or given it maybe 20 more HP. But it is definitely adequate. As one reviewer mentioned, the interior lighting lacks safety lights on the doors and lights under the dash, as well as dim trunk lighting. I'm not sure why, with all the LEDs and attention to detail, they missed that. But I bought some bright LED license plate lights that are tiny. She's about to get a lighting upgrade! I've owned it for a year and put new rear brakes and Kuhmos all around. When it's stored for long periods, the steering pops a bunch. But I discovered that when I was driving it daily, the popping went away after a week or so. It's a super looking and riding vehicle. It's my all-time favorite! I'm even enjoying the refinement over the raw power of the old 'vette. It's been the right car for the right time.

The steering wheel had been shaking, and it was discovered that the tires were faulty from the outset. After replacing the tires, the issue was resolved. However, there is currently an error with the hard top, which will need to be taken in for repair. The interior was originally black and white, but it was changed to all black, which looks fabulous. Unfortunately, the hard top harness was shorted due to poor design, resulting in a $400 repair bill. Despite this setback, the hard top is now functioning properly.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share some information about my car with you. It was bought brand new in June 2013 and has been driven for 78000 miles. The battery was replaced 2 years ago and I took it back to the dealer in 2014 for a slight transmission pan leak, but it was fully covered by the warranty. I've had a few recalls, but I've been ignoring them. When I'm on the interstate, I usually set the speed to 78 and lock it in 6th gear. It's a great car and can easily handle speeds of up to 85 mph. I would love to add a turbo to it someday!
