1994 Buick Century problems
Buick Century is the model name that was used by Buick for a line of upscale full-size cars from 1936 to 1942 and 1954 to 1958, as well as from 1973 to 2005 for mid-size cars.
The first Buick Century debuted as the Series 60 then renamed in 1936 as a shorter and lighter model featuring the same engine as the bigger Roadmaster and Limited series giving it more performance while using the shorter wheelbase body of the Buick Special. During the 1930s and 1940s it was Buick's companion to the top level Roadmaster and was offered as a 2-door and 4-door sedan and convertible. The Century name was used on six generations of cars of varying sizes as well as performance and trim levels. In 1969, Buick developed a concept car known as the Century Cruiser. In the 1970s, the Century Regal became a separate model and market positioning between the two products changed from year to year depending on sales. The Century was updated to front wheel drive in 1982 and was Buick's 2-door coupe, 4-door sedan and station wagon, with regular updates and feature upgrades as customer preferences changed over time.
Series 60 (1930–1935)
Originally, the Series 60 had the 331.4 cu in (5.4 L) OHV Buick Straight-6 engine from the Series 70, developing 99 bhp (74 kW) at 2,800 rpm. It had, at the beginning of the generation, a full-length running board denoting the top model for Buick at the time, shared with the short wheelbase, entry level Series 40. In 1930, GM built 38,180 cars. The bodystyles available were torpedo, sedan, coupe, and roadster convertible, using GM's "B-body" platform. Starting with this generation, all GM cars shared a corporate appearance as a result of the "Art and Colour Section" headed by Harley J. Earl and modest yearly changes were introduced to freshen the appearance.
In 1931, the running board was reduced and the OHV 220.7 cu in (3.6 L) Buick Straight-8 engine was introduced that developed 90 bhp (67 kW). Aesthetically, the Series 60 remained almost unchanged, and the same fact occurred also in the following year. In 1931 and 1932, a total of 55,135 were produced.
In 1933, the length of the body increased and the radiator was now concealed behind a façade with a grille. The engine power increased to 97 hp (72 kW), and 1933 was the first year all GM vehicles were installed with optional vent windows which were initially called “No Draft Individually Controlled Ventilation” later renamed "Ventiplanes". In 1934, the appearance was changed to a more rounded appearance, with a new OHV 278 cu in (4.6 L) eight-cylinder engine and 100 hp. In 1935, the model remained almost unchanged while the body style selections were similar to larger Buicks but more affordably priced. Six choices were available to include both 2- and 4-door convertibles using the term "phaeton" for the 4-door convertible with a listed price of US$1,675 ($37,224 in 2023 dollars ). Total production from 1933 to 1935 was 31,385. In 1936, the model changed its name to "Century".

Common 1994 Buick Century problems
The 1994 Buick Century has been reported to have several common issues, primarily related to the engine and transmission. The following are the most frequently reported problems based on owner complaints.
- Transmission Slipping: The 1994 Buick Century has experienced transmission slipping issues, with an average cost of $2,100 to fix and typically occurring at around 78,000 miles. This problem is often associated with the transmission's internal components wearing out or failing, leading to a loss of power and poor driving performance.
- Intake Manifold Gasket Leak: This issue is prevalent in the 2003 Buick Century, with an average cost of $900 to fix and typically occurring at around 90,000 miles. The intake manifold gasket is responsible for sealing the connection between the engine block and the intake manifold. When it fails, it can cause coolant or engine oil leaks, which can lead to engine damage if not addressed promptly.
- Leaking Coolant, Intake Manifold Gasket Failure: This problem is common in the 2001 Buick Century, with an average cost of $900 to fix and typically occurring at around 88,000 miles. Similar to the intake manifold gasket leak, this issue is caused by the failure of the intake manifold gasket, leading to coolant leaks and potential engine damage.
- Power Window Switch Failure: This is a common issue in the 1994 Buick Century, with the power window switch failing and causing inconvenience to the driver and passengers.
- Transmission Pressure Control Solenoid Failure: This problem can lead to transmission shifting issues and poor driving performance.
- Fuel Pump Issues: Some 1994 Buick Century owners have reported issues with the fuel pump, including no power to the fuel pump, which can prevent the engine from starting or running properly.
In addition to these issues, the 1994 Buick Century 3.1 V6 has specific problems related to hard starting, low idle, rough running, and bucking under load, as reported by a forum member. These issues can be caused by various factors, including faulty sensors, vacuum leaks, and ignition system problems. Some possible causes include a misfire, a faulty crankshaft sensor, a clogged catalytic converter, or a restricted exhaust.
To diagnose and fix these issues, it is recommended to perform a thorough inspection of the engine and its components, including the intake manifold, fuel injectors, throttle position sensor, and EGR valve. Checking for vacuum leaks, performing a compression test, and testing the fuel pressure can also help identify the root cause of the problem.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-11-24
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 3G4AG55M4RS
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: ON 3 SEPARATE OCCASSIONS THAT RESULTED IN AN ACCIDENT, TWICE WITH ME AND ONCE WITH MY WIFE, THE BRAKES HAVE FAILED TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THEIR HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS OTHER OCCASIONS WHERE THE BRAKES HAVE FAILED TO STOP THE THE VEHICLE IN A PANIC OR NEAR PANIC SITUATION. THE ANTI-LOCK WORKS FINE, THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE BRAKES WILL NOT BRING THE CAR TO A COMPLETE STOP. IT KEEPS ROLLING MANY FEET FARTHER THAN IS SAFE. THE THREE ACCIDENTS OCURRED AT LES THAN 5 MPH. YOU HIT THE BRAKES AND THE VEHICLE NOT ONLY WON'T LOCK THE BRAKES IT WON'T STOP THE VEHICLE. I HAVE INSTALLED SEMI-METALLIC AND STANDARD BRAKE PADS WITH NO SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT. THE ROTORS ARE FINE AND THE PADS HAVE NEVER BEEN ALLOWED TO WEAR DOWN SIGNIFICANTLY. I HAVE HAD NUMEROUS VEHICLES AND ALSO RACED CARS AND THEY ALL STOP IMMEDIATELY FROM 5 - 10 MPH. THIS VEHICLE WILL USUALLY REQUIRE 30 - 40 FEET TO STOP FROM THE TIME THE PEDAL IS PUSHED. I HAVE NOTED THE PROBLEM TO THE DEALER IN THE PAST WITH NO RESULTS. MY WIFE AND I HAVE BOTH RELAYED THE SITUATION TO OTHERS IN THE PAST AND ON SEVERAL OCCASSIONS THE OTHER PARTY HAS SAID SOMETHING TO THE EFFECT OF "OH, I GUESS YOU HAVE A BUICK". SO, THIS PROBLEM IS OBVIOUSLY NOT ISOLATED TO MY VEHICLE. EVEN AT HIGH SPPED THE BRAKES WORK EXCEPTIONALLY WELL TILL THE LAST FEW FEET WHERE THE BRAKES WILL NOT BRING THE VEHICLE TO A COMPLETE STOP IN A SATISFACTORY DISTANCE. I HAVE DRIVEN MANY OTHER VEHICLES WITH AND WITHOUT ANTI-LOCK BRAKES. I FULLY UNDERSTAND THAT THE OPERATOR APPLIES BRAKES DIFFERENTLY WITH ANTI-LOCK BRAKES. I HAPPENED TO GET INTO THIS WEB-SITE TODAY INQUIRING ABOUT ANY POSSIBLE RECALLS ON MY OTHER VEHICLE (2000 VOYAGER) AND FIGURED I WOULD NOTE THIS PROBLEM WHILE I WAS HERE. *AK

1994 Buick Century recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 6 recalls for different components of the 1994 Buick Century.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: SEAT BELTS:FRONT:ANCHORAGE
- Summary: THESE VEHICLES WERE ASSEMBLED WITH REAR OUTBOARD SAFETY BELT ANCHORAGES THAT MAY NOT WITHSTAND THE REQUIRED LOAD. THIS DOES NOT COMPLY WITH FMVSS NO.210, "SEAT BELT ASSEMBLY ANCHORAGES."
- Consequence: CONSEQUENCE OF NON-COMPLIANCE: IN A COLLISON, STRESS CAN CAUSE THE ATTACHMENT METAL TO TEAR AND ALLOW THE ANCHORAGE TO SEPARATE FROM THE BODY OF THE VEHICLE. THE SAFETY BELT MAY NOT PROTECT AN OCCUPANT IN THE EVENT OF A VEHICLE CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE EXISTING ANCHOR BOLTS WITH A NEW SHOULDER BOLT AND THREAD LOCKING ADHESIVE. ADDITIONALLY, NOISE CONTROL PATCHES WILL BE APPLIED AT EACH ANCHORAGE.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: STEERING:LINKAGES:KNUCKLE:SPINDLE:ARM
- Summary: THE RIGHT HAND SPINDLE NUT WAS NOT PROPERLY TIGHTENED DURING ASSEMBLY. THIS CAN CAUSE PREMATURE WHEEL BEARING FAILURE AND OVER TIME, THE SPINDLE CAN FRACTURE.
- Consequence: THIS WOULD CAUSE THE WHEEL TO SEPARATE FROM THE AXLE AND RESULT IN A VEHICLE CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE TORQUE ON THE RIGHT HAND FRONT SPINDLE NUT. IF THE SPINDLE NUT IS UNDERTORQUED THE DEALER WILL REPLACE THE RIGHT HAND FRONT WHEEL BEARING ASSEMBLY AND THE SPINDLE NUT WILL BE REPLACED.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:DOORS:LATCH
- Summary: WATER INTRUSION CAN CAUSE A SHORT CIRCUIT IN THE POWER DOOR LOCK ASSEMBLY.
- Consequence: A SHORT CIRCUIT IN THE POWER DOOR LOCK ASSEMBLY CAN RESULT IN A VEHICLE FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE POWER DOOR LOCK RELAY AND ANY CORRODED TERMINALS. IN ADDITION, THE NEW RELAY WILL BE RELOCATED TO AN AREA WHERE WATER INTRUSION IS LESS LIKELY.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:SPRINGS
- Summary: IN THE EVENT OF A PRIMARY ACCELERATOR CONTROL SPRING FAILURE, THE SECONDARY (BACK-UP) ACCELERATOR CONTROL RETURN SPRING WILL NOT RETURN THE THROTTLE TO THE FULLY CLOSED POSITION, AS REQUIRED BY FMVSS NO. 124, "ACCELERATOR CONTROL SYSTEM."
- Consequence: CONSEQUENCE OF NON-COMPLIANCE: LOSS OF THROTTLE CONTROL COULD RESULT IN A VEHICLE CRASH WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE SECONDARY THROTTLE RETURN SPRING.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:CABLES
- Summary: DURING ASSEMBLY, WATER MAY HAVE ENTERED THE ACCELERATOR CONTROL CABLE CONDUIT CAUSING IT TO DEVELOP A HIGH EFFORT AND/OR BINDING CONDITION IN VERY COLD WEATHER.
- Consequence: HIGH EFFORT OR BINDING CONDITIONS CAUSE LOSS OF NORMALTHROTTLE CONTROL OR THE THROTTLE MAY NOT RETURN TO IDLE WHEN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL IS RELEASED. IF THIS WERE TO OCCUR WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION, A VEHICLE CRASH COULD OCCUR.
- Remedy: THE DEALER WILL PURGE THE THROTTLE CABLE OF ANY INTERNALLY TRAPPED WATER, IF IT IS PRESENT.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE MAY SEPARATE FROM THE CONDUIT END FITTING WHILE ENGAGED AND ACCELERATOR CONTROL COULD BE LOST.
- Consequence: LOSS OF ACCELERATOR CONTROL MAY NOT REDUCE ENGINE SPEEDTO A LEVEL ANTICIPATED BY THE DRIVER. ALTHOUGH THE VEHICLE CAN STILL BE STOPPEDWITH THE SERVICE BRAKE, LOSS OF ACCELERATOR CONTROL COULD RESULT IN A VEHICLECRASH WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.
- Remedy: REPLACE THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE.

This is my first car and I absolutely love it! At first, I wasn't too excited about getting my grandma's 12-year-old car, but after doing some research and driving it around, I've grown to really appreciate it. It's a great-looking car and mine is in above-average shape with only 70,000 miles on it. Plus, it's been incredibly dependable for my grandmother and I haven't had a single problem with it yet. While the gas mileage with the 3.1L V-6 could be better at about 17 mpg in the city, it's still a very comfortable car to drive. The seats are like a couch and the driving position feels great. The radio is surprisingly good for a stock radio and sounds great when turned up. The ride quality is smooth and quiet, just like a Town Car. Overall, I absolutely love my Buick Century!
-
We bought this car used with about 61,000 miles on it after searching for a vehicle that would have sufficient cargo room while driving like a car. We think we got a great deal as it has been really reliable. Other than routine maintenance, we only had to replace the muffler and alternator. The car has plenty of cargo room and a nice balance between power and gas mileage. It's getting harder to find a mid-size wagon other than in the luxury range, so we plan to keep this one for 2-3 more years, at least as a second car.
-
I hope you're enjoying your 1994 Century! It's always exciting to get a new car.
-
You're going to love this story! I sold my car to my parents when it had 96,000 miles on it. They drove it for a while and then gave it to me when it had 113,000 miles on it. I've owned it for 3 years now and it has 163,000 miles on it, but it still drives great! Other than a fuel pump replacement around 150,000 miles, it has been a reliable and bulletproof car. Mine has the V6 and gets 29 mpg on the interstate and 24 mpg in the city. Everything still works perfectly and it doesn't have any leaks. It's a really high-quality car!
-
I bought this car as a second vehicle to get me back and forth to college each day since I am going back to school. I absolutely love the car! It's more fun to drive than my 2002 PT Cruiser and I find it very quick! It moves when I need it to move, that's for sure. I've left quite a few trucks and Jeeps behind which refused to let me out onto the interstate or refused to let me go over into the other lane when I needed to. Granted, it is not a road rocket but it is very quick as well as impressive for its age. I like it! I may keep it and sell the Cruiser. :)

Bought this car for my son and he absolutely loves it! It has a nice ride, smooth handling, and is great on gas, which is a huge plus with the way gas prices are these days. If you're lucky enough to find one, I highly recommend buying it. It's safe for both young and old and feels very solid.

Hi there! Thank you for considering this wagon. It has been well-maintained and has only 104,000 miles on it. Recently, we invested in some important repairs, including a new alternator and fuel pump, which cost $300 and $500 respectively. The wagon runs smoothly and quietly, and the 3.1 V6 engine is healthy. While it may not be the most powerful, it still gets the job done. Plus, it has some great features like power windows, locks, tilt steering, and a fold-up seat in the rear that can seat up to 5 adults and 3 kids. With a fuel economy of 18/26 mpg, it's a great alternative to a van or SUV. Let us know if you have any questions!

What a great story! It's amazing how reliable your car was. Even after all those years and miles, it still ran like a champ. Of course, with any car, there were some minor repairs needed, but it sounds like you took great care of it. It's always tough to say goodbye to a car that's been such a big part of your life. Thank you for sharing your story!

This car has been in the family since it was new and has proven to be a reliable 4-cylinder vehicle. My mother loved it and my wife still does. While it may not be the best for long trips, it is perfect for getting around town. Some minor repairs were needed around 120k miles, but nothing major. It may not be the most comfortable for taller individuals, but it's great for my wife who is 5 feet tall. Plus, it gets good gas mileage!

We bought it used for $2600.00 in 2007 and it had 6200. Miles on it. The transmission was replaced 2xs! And the gas mileage was really bad. I have always had used cars and this was by far the worst. We had other problems here but to many to mention.
