2016 Chrysler 200 problems

The Chrysler 200 is a mid-size sedan that was manufactured and marketed by Chrysler from model years 2011 to 2017 across two generations in four-door sedan and two-door convertible (first generation only) body styles.

The 200 nameplate debuted on the 200C, a prototype hybrid vehicle shown at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit and based on the Chrysler 300. The 200C concept was engineered to accept either traditional gasoline, hybrid or full-electric powertrains.

First generation (2011)

The first generation Chrysler 200 was a restyled, rebadged and re-engineered version of the third generation Chrysler Sebring that began production in 2006. Although the JS platform, of Mitsubishi origins, had been retained, there were many cosmetic and powertrain changes to the 200.

The 2.4 L four-cylinder 173 hp (129 kW) 166 lb⋅ft (225 N⋅m) engine with either a four-speed or six-speed automatic transmission carried over. Chrysler's new Pentastar 3.6 L V6 engine was also offered with a six-speed automatic transmission, generating 283 hp (211 kW) and 260 lb⋅ft (353 N⋅m) of torque. A flex-fuel version of the 3.6 L Pentastar engine was also available. Other changes included stiffer body mounts, revised suspension geometry with a softer ride rate, a new rear sway bar, and upgraded tires. The 200 was also more highly equipped than the Sebring. Chrysler added features such as LED lighting, thicker seat cushioning with higher quality materials, along with new measures to decrease noise, vibration, and harshness.

The Chrysler 200 was manufactured at Sterling Heights Assembly (Sterling Heights, Michigan) and arrived at dealers in December 2010. A 2-door convertible model was added in early 2011 with the same engine choices.

The 200 and its platform mate, the Dodge Avenger, were ranked the "Most American Made" sedans and convertibles by The Kogod Made in America Auto Index in 2013.

According to Edmunds' Acevedot, "by changing the name, Chrysler was able to let its midsize offering ride the coattails of the Chrysler 300 and to encourage consumers to think of the 200 as the younger brother of the flagship 300"; as an all-new generation of the 300 was released at the same time. Acevedot also noted that the name change has the added benefit of distancing itself from its predecessor, a vehicle notorious for quality issues and fleet pervasiveness.

In early 2013, Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne announced that the first generation model will be short lived and a redesigned next generation model would appear in auto shows January 2014.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-22
  • VIN: 1C3CCCAB4GN
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: On 08/22/2023, I took my vehicle into an auto service repair center to have diagnostics done due to a creeking sound. I was worried something could be wrong, and should any issues not be addressed or resolved, I could do more damage by continuing to drive my vehicle. Unfortunately I was advised that the sound was due to a rear suspension knuckle issue, a part that can't just be repaired based on how it was engineered and that the whole thing would need to be replaced. Due to the diagnosis I received, I knew it was imperative for me to see if there were any open recalls and review any notations from other Chrysler vehicle owners on said issue. I was able to locate, within just a few moments, that there are several manufacturers that have open recalls due to rear suspension knuckle and bushing problems. I contacted Chrysler Customer Service via email on 08/22/2023, regarding the rear suspension problems, especially since this seems to be a very common issue as noted on several online forums, from Chrysler owners all over the country. Some owners have different Chrysler models, however many happen to be the 200, all of which, are experiencing the same issue. I received a timely response to my email from Chrysler Customer Service to which i appreciate. The email stated: "we are aware of this and are doing the best we can to resolve this." Can you please advise further on said response? With Chrysler being aware of this issue, what is currently being done? What can Chrysler owners expect as far as a resolution and when should we expect a resolution or statement on this issue from Chrysler?

It takes approximately 3 to 4 car lengths to fully stop at 10 mph. I replaced the brakes and bled the brakes properly but I have come to the conclusion that the brake booster has gone bad. My safety and others is at risk due to the length of time it takes to stop and the lack of stopping power. I am unable to take it to a dealer as it doesn't run at the present time. The abs and park brake lights were on and the dash says to service electronic braking system. 2016 Chrysler 200 recalls

2018-05-17
  • Manufacturer: Chrysler (FCA US LLC)
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING
  • Summary: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2018 Dodge Journey, Charger and Durango, RAM 2500, 3500, 3500 Cab Chassis (more than 10,000lb), 4500 Cab Chassis and 5500 Cab Chassis, Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee and Chrysler 300, 2014-2019 RAM 1500, 2015-2018 Dodge Challenger, 2015-2017 Chrysler 200, 2016-2018 RAM 3500 Cab Chassis (less than 10,000 lb), 2017-2018 Chrysler Pacifica and 2018 Jeep Wrangler vehicles. These vehicles are being recalled to address a defect that could prevent the cruise control system from disengaging. If, when using cruise control, there is a short circuit within the vehicle's wiring, the driver may not be able to shut off the cruise control either by depressing the brake pedal or manually turning the system off once it has been engaged, resulting in either the vehicle maintaining its current speed or possibly accelerating.
  • Consequence: If the vehicle maintains its speed or accelerates despite attempts to deactivate the cruise control, there would be an increased risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the software, and perform a software flash on the engine or powertrain control module, free of charge. The recall began June 4, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Note: Owners are advised to stop using cruise control until the software update has been performed. In the event that cruise control cannot be disengaged while driving, owners should firmly and steadily apply the brakes and shift the transmission to neutral, placing the vehicle in park once it has stopped.
2016-08-10

  • Remedy: Chrysler has notified owners, and dealers will inspect the joints and tighten or replace the fasteners, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on September 2, 2016. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is S59.

Negative 2016 Chrysler 200 car reviews

  1. Camden Zemlak 2025-05-17

I really like the look of the new 200, which is what drew me to it. I wasn't in the market for an expensive car, but this one met my needs. The car drives decently, with good handling, brakes, and features. However, there are some issues with the computer/transmission relationship that can be frustrating. At times, the car doesn't seem to know which gear it wants to be in and can hesitate when you need acceleration the most. I've found a solution to this problem, though. When driving in stop and go traffic or around town, I switch to 'L' or low gear. While this does decrease my gas mileage slightly, it greatly improves the power and acceleration of the car. On the open highway, 'D' works just fine. Overall, I have some issues with the car, but I've found ways to work around them. I hope this information is helpful to you.

  2. Adelbert Schiller 2025-01-16

11 days after owning the car, I had to send it to the dealership because the push-start button and engine light came on. The vehicle decelerates when I drive. I have read reviews of people having the same issues. I'm very worried about owning the car now. I am just waiting for the dealer to finish what they have to do, and then I will make my decision as to whether to keep it or return it. I believe Chrysler can do better.

  3. Davonte Rau 2025-01-12

This vehicle has had issue after issue. It began with horrible shifting and jerking of the transmission - causing me to think I'd been rear-ended on several occasions due to the severe jolt. The problem could not be replicated the first couple of times I took it in for service at the dealership. -Though it happens EVERY time I drive. Finally, after the third or fourth time I took it in - I was informed that ALL FOUR MOTOR MOUNTS WERE BROKEN! They believed me at that point! They re-flashed the software and said it was fixed. It was not. I was forced to pay a $100 deductible so that it would be covered under the warranty later on. It made no sense to me, but I paid it anyway. Since then, this 2016 vehicle - has had NOTHING but problems. Transmission problems - continuousThermostat had to be replacedBad airbags and constant notification alert and light - occured at 37k miles (1k post warranty coverage!) $126 for them to tell me it would be a $500+ fixCompressor came apart internallyCondenser went outSerpentine belt brokeWheel hubs - all four are going out according to the dealership - no doubt this is due to the havoc the jerking of the transmission causes.NOW: The starter went out two days ago and smoke billowed from under the hood at the same time. The dealerships wants to charge me $1000 to replace the starter so that THEN they can determine what else is wrong and caused the smoke and noise while driving to work that morning. Plus the fee for diagnosis of approx $150.I've since contacted Chrysler and an agent will get back to me on Tues or Wed of next week. Meanwhile, I have no car, nor a loaner vehicle since the dealership didn't have any available. I was informed I could rent a car and be reimbursed as applicable - so, if that means if they decide to.

  4. Taylor Hamill 2024-11-07

This car has a lot of potential, but it may require some extra attention to ensure it runs smoothly. It's important to note that there may be some initial issues that need to be addressed, but once those are taken care of, the car should be reliable. It's always a good idea to have a quality check before purchasing any vehicle to ensure it meets your standards and expectations.

  5. Helmer Haag 2024-10-17

The massive discount on this car--nearly $10,000--initially caught our attention. However, we ultimately decided against it due to some issues we encountered during our test drive. The car's sluggish responsiveness and hesitant acceleration were disappointing, especially considering it has a 6 cylinder engine. Additionally, the lack of rear seat room made it difficult for more than two adults to ride comfortably, and getting in and out of the car was a bit of a challenge for taller individuals. Lastly, the car did not have enough hauling capacity for our needs, and we were disappointed to learn that adding a trailer hitch would void the warranty. Looking for a mid-sized car that is both stylish and safe? Look no further than the 200! With all the latest safety features, including brake assist, lane departure warnings, and adaptive cruise control, you'll feel secure and confident on the road. And that's not all - this car also boasts a stunning interior, with heated and cooled seats, a heated steering wheel, and remote start capabilities. Plus, with a spacious trunk and excellent handling, it's the perfect choice for anyone seeking both comfort and convenience. Don't miss out on this true bargain - it's a winner at any price! Update as of 1/4/17: I love this car so much that I bought another one for my granddaughter. The newer model has a 9-speed transmission that shifts even more smoothly. It's a shame that they stopped building this car to focus on more profitable trucks.

    1. You got a great deal! I bought a used 2016 model in 2017 with 9800 miles and paid $16,000 with financing provided by the dealer. 2. The mechanical aspects are still under warranty since I purchased it. I had one warranty service where the entire rack and pinion was replaced at 30,000 miles after I went off-road (shhh). The motor, transmission, brakes, A/C, starter, alternator, etc. are performing great and holding up strong at 49,000 miles. I use it as a company vehicle. 3. The performance has surpassed my expectations, especially since I'm not a big fan of 4 cylinders. As expected, it has slow acceleration, but I have tracked highway mileage at over 49 MPG at 1800 RPM on flat highways. The cold air is a plus. The brakes are average, but I have stomped on them hard several times and the pedal is still firm, although it doesn't stop as quickly as truck brakes. I fully expect the motor and transmission to hold out well until I trade it in at 125,000 miles. I have no complaints about the 9-speed transmission, it shifts smoothly for me. It starts easily, idles and runs smoothly. I have driven it hard in Texas climate from hill country to desert terrain to Saltwater Gulf at 40,000 miles in less than 18 months. It runs strong and durable. 4. The interior is loaded with features, as are most 4 cylinders to hide the economy of the power train. The Bluetooth, stereo, automated controls, etc. are the best I have had, but this is the newest vehicle I have ever owned, so I assume power ports, etc. are now standard equipment as phone, computer, audio, video technologies merge. It looks expensive based on the dash (back-up camera, programmable features, monitors for MPG, air pressure, temperatures, etc.). Overall, it provides a good driving experience for the balance of economy cost for purchase price, maintenance costs (American-made parts and labor), operation (1 gallon of gas over 40 miles highway), and enough power for climbing hills, entering freeway speeds, and carrying people and cargo load capacity. The back seat headroom was never an issue for me because the front is extra roomy. I would just put kids or shorter passengers in the back (my mom even slept in the back on road trips). If you're looking for a vehicle that looks stylish inside and out for an average suburban family, this is the one for you. I would definitely buy it again!

I recently purchased a 3.6 liter V-6 Chrysler 200S and I absolutely love it! Coming from driving Cadillacs and Audis, I can confidently say that it is an incredible value and a unique vehicle on the road. The sleek coupe-like design is both elegant and sporty. I highly recommend it!

This car is fantastic! It has more than enough power and still has great gas mileage. It handles like a dream and all the creature comforts exceeded my expectations. The cabin is designed with all the controls within reach and the comfort is better than I expected. This is one of the best all around cars I have ever owned. I have recently gone over 40,000 miles and still have not had a single problem with this car.

Your 200C is still running like new! I'm glad to hear that you haven't had any repairs and have no complaints. It's amazing that you're getting over 40 miles per gallon on the highway. It's too bad that they discontinued production, but it seems like everyone is buying SUVs these days. Overall, it sounds like you have an outstanding car!
