The BMW M4 is a version of the BMW 4 Series automobile developed by BMW's motorsport division, BMW M, that has been built since 2014. As part of the renumbering that splits the coupé and convertible variants of the 3 Series into the 4 Series, the M4 replaced those variants of the BMW M3. Upgrades over the standard BMW 4 Series include an upgraded engine, suspension, exhaust system, brakes and weight reduction measures including increased use of carbon fibre, such as on the roof of the car.

First generation (F82/F83; 2014)

On 25 September 2013, BMW released the technical specifications of the M4. It is powered by the S55B30 engine, which is developed and engineered by BMW M GmbH. This 3.0-litre inline-6 engine has been built specifically for the new M4/M3, having a redline of 7,600 rpm with the rev limiter actuated at 7,300 rpm. The engine uses two mono-scroll turbochargers with a peak boost pressure of 18.1 psi (1.2 bar). The power is rated at 317 kW (431 PS; 425 hp), however this is achieved not at a specific engine speed, but is instead rated throughout the range of 5,500–7,300 rpm. The engine's torque is rated at 550 N⋅m (406 lbf⋅ft) throughout the range of 1,850–5,500. Two transmission choices are available, the 6-speed manual and the 7-speed M-DCT transmissions. The 7-speed M-DCT transmission accelerates the car from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.1 seconds) and the 6-speed manual transmission from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.3 seconds. The weight of the European specification M4 equipped with a manual transmission is 1,572 kg (3,466 lb) and with the M-DCT dual-clutch transmission, the car is some 40 kg (88 lb) heavier, losing some 80 kg (176 lb) as compared to the E92 M3.

As per its E92 predecessor, the roof of the coupe model is constructed from carbon fibre (except if the optional sunroof is fitted). Carbon fibre is also used for the bootlid and engine brace. For the first time in a M3/M4 model, an electric power steering unit is used. The steering system is specifically tuned for both the M3 and M4, however it has been criticised for lacking in feel. The 18 inches (460 mm) and 19 inches (480 mm) wheel options are available with lightweight forged alloy wheels being standard. The M compound brakes come standard (with blue brake calipers), while carbon ceramic brakes (with gold brake calipers) are available as an option.

The M4 features Active Sound, live amplification of the engine's natural sound inducted into the passenger cabin via speakers in the car. BMW claims this technology has been used so that the well insulated cabin can reduce road/wind noise but still provide the driver with the sporty sound of the M powered engine. There are no artificial sound or any pre-recorded track in the system. This system was first implemented in the M5 (F10).

The M4 is based on the F32 4 Series however 50 percent of its components are unique as compared to the 4 Series.

The convertible variant of the M4 was announced along with its coupe sibling, also internally known as F82 or F83 M4. It shares almost everything with the coupé version, but weighs more due to its folding metal roof. The convertible weighs 1,750 kg (3,858 lb) (manual), 1,691 kg (3,728 lb) (M-DCT). The three-piece retractable hardtop folds in 20 seconds. The only significant difference between the two is the weight due to its retractable hardtop. Like its hardtop counterpart, the F83 M4 uses carbon fibre reinforced plastic to lighten and stiffen the car.

Because of its extra weight it accelerates slower, taking it 0.3 seconds longer to 100 km/h (62 mph); 4.6 seconds with the manual and 4.3 seconds with the M-DCT transmission. The dynamic differences between the two variants are marginally small.

Starting from the 2019 model year (production from 07/2018 onward) BMW removed the carbon fibre driveshaft so as to be able to fit an Otto Particulate Filter (OPF), necessary to comply with WLTP emissions regulations and this also meant that the M Performance Exhaust was no longer able to be offered on these cars by BMW.

APPROXIMATELY 800 M4 GTS'S WERE EVER BUILT AND THESE PARTS ARE FAILING AT ALL MILEAGE VALUES. THIS ISSUE IS WELL DOCUMENTED ON BIMMERPOST.COM FROM SEVERAL OWNERS. BMW WILL NOT COVER THE COST TO REPLACE IF THE VEHICLE IS OUTSIDE OF THE WARRANTY, REGARDLESS OF THE MILEAGE; MINE HAS 6,500 MILES. IT HAD LAST BEEN SERVICED SIX MONTHS AGO AT 18,806 MILES FOR A REGULARLY SCHEDULED OIL CHANGE. THERE HAD NOT BEEN ANY ISSUES IN THE 10 MONTHS OF OWNERSHIP. WE WERE DRIVING FROM DENVER TOWARDS SALINA, KS ON I-70 ON OUR WAY TO OK TRAVELING 75-80MPH. THE CAR WAS DRIVING NORMALLY WITH NO WARNING LIGHTS. THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS ON, THE AC WAS ON HALF AND THE WINDOWS AND TOP WERE UP. IT WAS DARK AND THE HEADLIGHTS WERE ON. WITH NO WARNING, DARK NOXIOUS SMOKE STARTING POURING INTO THE CABIN, POSSIBLY THROUGH THE AC VENTS. THE SMOKE BURNED OUR EYES AND CAUSED US TO START COUGHING AND MADE IT DIFFICULT TO SEE AND BREATHE. BECAUSE IT WAS DARK OUT, WE COULDN'T IMMEDIATELY TELL WHERE THE SMOKE WAS COMING FROM. WE ROLLED THE WINDOWS DOWN, BUT THAT INCREASED THE AMOUNT OF SMOKE COMING INTO THE CABIN, SO WE ROLLED THEM BACK UP. WE PULLED OVER AND EVACUATED THE VEHICLE. OTHER THAN THE SMOKE, ALL OF THE CAR FUNCTIONS WERE STILL WORKING. THE CAR WAS DRIVING FINE, BRAKES WERE WORKING, HEADLIGHTS WERE WORKING, AC WAS WORKING, WINDOW CONTROLS WERE WORKING. NO WARNINGS OR WARNING LIGHTS WERE ACTIVATED. A FEW MINUTES AFTER GETTING OUT OF THE VEHICLE, THE FIRST FLAMES BEGAN COMING UP THROUGH THE TOP OF THE HOOD BY THE WINDSHIELD. I TOLD THE ATTORNEY THIS IS WHY THERE IS A THROTTLE BODY AND A BLOW OFF VALVE SO THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN. WHEN THE THROTTLE BODY IS CLOSED, NO AIR GETS IN THE ENGINE SO THIS IS IMPOSSIBLE. THE BLOW OFF VALVE TAKES ALL THE PRESSURE OUT OF THE TURN SYSTEM.I OWN THE GTS VERSION, A VERY RARE 300 PIECES FOR THE USA AND ANOTHER OWNER IS EXPERIENCING THE SAME SITUATION. IF THIS IS TRUE WHAT BMW SAYS, THEY NEED TO RECALL ALL OF THEIR TURBO VEHICLES BECAUSE THIS WILL CAUSE THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE TO GET HURT. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BUT TWO MONTHS LATER A LOUD NOISE WAS HEARD COMING FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE AS THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING AT 40 MPH. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT HE WAS A SHORT DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE DEALER SO HE WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE GOING UNDER 5 MPH. AT THE DEALER IT WAS INFORMED THAT THE DRIVER SIDE DRIVE SHAFT HAD FRACTURED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED.   • Summary: THIS CAR IS EQUIPPED WITH AUTO START/STOP TECHNOLOGY. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS THE CAR HAS COMPLETELY STALLED OUT AND FAILED. THE DEALERSHIP HAS BEEN NOTIFIED OF THE ISSUE WITH CAR, AND HAS STATED THEY ARE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM, AND OFFER NO REMEDY. AFTER MY CAR HAS BEEN OUT OF SERVICE FOR A WHOLE HOST OF ISSUES TO INCLUDE TRANSMISSIONS, EXCESSIVE BRAKE NOISE AND HESITATION, ENGINE MISFIRING AS WELL AS BLUETOOTH AND NAVIGATION SYSTEM FAILURE. THESE PROBLEMS HAVE BEEN ISSUES WITH MY CAR SINCE ABOUT 13,000 MILES TILL NOW WHICH IS 40,220. BMW HAS DENIED ISSUES WITH THE CAR ALTHOUGH RECENTLY THEY ACKNOWLEDGED THE MISFIRING AND THE ENGINE RUNNING HOT AND THE MALFUNCTIONS NAVIGATION UNIT.

  • Components: POWER TRAIN:DRIVELINE:DRIVESHAFT
  • Summary: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2016-2017 BMW M3 Sedans, 2016-2017 BMW M4 and M4 GTS Coupes and 2017 BMW M4 Convertible vehicles. The connection between the driveshaft and the flange may fail resulting in a loss of propulsion.
  • Consequence: A loss of vehicle propulsion can increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: BMW will notify vehicle owners, and dealers will replace the driveshaft, free of charge. The recall began April 9, 2019. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

  • Summary: BMW North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2016 BMW M2 Coupe vehicles, 2015-2017 M3 Sedan vehicles and 2015-2016 M4 Coupe and M4 Convertible vehicles. During servicing of the rear differential for a prior service action, the rear sub-frame bolts may have been reused instead of being replaced. Reuse of the existing bolts may cause the bolts to loosen.
  • Consequence: Loose rear sub-frame bolts may adversely affect vehicle handling and control, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the rear sub-frame bolts with new bolts, free of charge. The recall began on November 3, 2016. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

  • Summary: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 M3 Sedan vehicles manufactured May 30, 2015, to September 2, 2015, 2016 M4 Coupe vehicles manufactured July 3, 2015, to September 11, 2015, and 2015-2016 M4 Convertible vehicles manufactured May 29, 2015, to August 4, 2015. The affected vehicles have a driveshaft with a slip-joint that may not have been filled with grease. As a result, the slip-joint may fail over time.
  • Consequence: If the slip-joint fails, there would be a loss of power to the rear axle and therefore the vehicle would stop moving, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the driveshaft, replacing it as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on January 14, 2016. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
