2003 Subaru Impreza problems
The Subaru Impreza (Japanese: スバル・インプレッサ, Hepburn: Subaru Inpuressa) is a compact car that has been manufactured by the Japanese automaker Subaru since 1992. It was introduced as a replacement for the Leone, with the predecessor's EA series engines replaced by the new EJ series. It is now in its sixth generation.
Subaru has offered a 5-door hatchback body variant since 2008. The firm also offered a coupé from 1995 until 2001, a 4-door sedan up to the fifth generation, and a 5-door wagon from the Impreza's introduction which was replaced by a hatchback with the third generation in 2008. Mainstream versions have received "boxer" flat-four engines ranging from 1.5- to 2.5-liters, with the performance-oriented Impreza WRX and WRX STI models upgraded with the addition of turbochargers. Since the third generation series, some markets have adopted the abbreviated Subaru WRX name for these high-performance variants. The first three generations of Impreza were also available with an off-road appearance non-SUV package called the Outback Sport, exclusive to the North American market. For the fourth generation, this appearance package was raised up to be subcompact crossover SUV and renamed the XV (Crosstrek in North America), and is sold internationally. Colloquially, the car is sometimes referred to as Scooby.
Subaru has offered front- and all-wheel drive layouts for the Impreza. Since the late-1990s, some markets have restricted sales to the all-wheel drive model, putting the Impreza in a unique selling proposition in the global compact class, which is usually characterized by front-wheel drive. Japanese models remain available in both configurations.
A 2019 iSeeCars study named the Impreza as the lowest-depreciating sedan in the United States after five years.

Common 2003 Subaru Impreza problems
The 2003 Subaru Impreza is a popular car among enthusiasts, but like any car, it can have its fair share of problems. Here are some of the most common issues reported by owners:
- Transmission Issues: Transmission problems are also common in the 2003 Subaru Impreza. Some owners have reported issues with the transmission slipping, jerking, or failing to shift properly. These issues can be caused by a variety of factors, including low transmission fluid levels, worn out clutch plates, and faulty solenoids.
- Suspension Problems: Suspension problems are also common in the 2003 Subaru Impreza. Some owners have reported issues with the suspension bottoming out, particularly when driving over bumps or potholes. These issues can be caused by worn out shocks or struts, or by damaged suspension components.
- Electrical Problems: Electrical problems are also common in the 2003 Subaru Impreza. Some owners have reported issues with the car's electrical system, including problems with the battery, alternator, and starter motor. These issues can be caused by a variety of factors, including faulty wiring, corroded connections, and worn out components.
- Braking Problems: Braking problems are also common in the 2003 Subaru Impreza. Some owners have reported issues with the car's brakes, including problems with the brake pads, rotors, and calipers. - Body and Interior Problems: Some owners have reported issues with the car's body and interior, including problems with the paint, trim, and upholstery. These issues can be caused by a variety of factors, including exposure to the elements, wear and tear, and poor quality materials.
- Recall: In late 2004, Subaru UK launched a recall affecting about 1500 cars due to concerns that a control valve cover might come loose, causing oil to leak, which could lead to the risk of fire. If your car was affected, it's important to check to see if remedial work has been carried out.
It's important to note that not all 2003 Subaru Imprezas will experience these problems, and many owners have reported positive experiences with the car. However, if you're considering purchasing a 2003 Subaru Impreza, it's important to be aware of these potential issues and to have the car inspected by a qualified mechanic before making a purchase.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-01-01
- VIN: JF1GG29693G
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: My 2003 Subaru Impreza WRX has a very strong fuel odor that is coming into the cabin when I start my car up on cold days. It's been unusually cold here in Washington state this winter with temperatures in Seattle dipping well below freezing. I see that there is a recall for this exact problem for my exact car (https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2009/RCONL-09V468-4248.pdf). But when I called the dealer (Michael's Bellevue Subaru), and then subsequently called Subaru (1-800-SUBARU3), they told me that they will not fix this issue, since this recall does not apply to my state (Washington). I think that's not right. It is the exact same problem of cold weather causing this fuel line to leak, and they should honor this recall.

I GOT OUT OF MY CAR TO INVESTIGATE WHAT HAD JUST HAPPENED AND THE FRONT PORTION OF MY PASSENGER SIDE FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARM HAD COMPLETELY LOST ALL STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY. From just looking at the car, you wouldn't believe how fun it will be behind the wheel of this vehicle. The power you get from the turbo-charged engine will make you feel like a kid again, while the AWD system gives you confidence and comfort. What makes me even more confident about the WRX wagon is that the car is 100% made in Japan. No matter whether the road is wet or sandy, I always have confidence in every corner.
-
This car is an excellent value for the price of $25000. You won't find another car out there that can come close. It can even be driven in snow, when most sports cars can't move an inch, thanks to its all-wheel drive. Rain, snow, gravel, and mud are no problem. Once you hit 3000rpm, get ready to be pushed back in your seat and watch the speedometer climb fast. In summary, if you're looking for a car that offers great value for money, this is the one to get. You won't be disappointed!

I've been dreaming of owning a WRX ever since I first saw them in WRC and British car mags like CAR or EVO. Finally, after waiting for so long, I've had one for 6 months and 8000 miles now. The engine can be a bit slow up to 3000 rpms, but once it hits that point, it really comes to life. Driving part-throttle is fine above 2500 rpms, but there's still a bit of lag. I absolutely love driving this car in town, but I do find it a bit twitchy at highway speeds of 70 and up. The body is solid, with some body roll, but it's not too bad. The MPG could be better, but I still manage to average about 22 in town and 29 on the highway. If you're looking for a bit more power, you could always consider adding a muffler or some aftermarket items.
-
What a great deal to get a fully optioned-out WRX for less than 26K out the door! I want to thank MIKE A. @ SM Subaru for being so accommodating. I must say, I absolutely love this car!! It just begs to go fast, to corner hard, and to make the driver happy.

This car is a great value for the price! Although I did replace the factory tires with Yokahamas, it is otherwise stock. The seats are comfortable, the interior is fine, and the standard package is loaded. The handling is fantastic, and the 4-wheel drive is a key feature. The only minor complaints are the somewhat mushy shifter and the gas mileage, which is only about 22mpg (with premium fuel). I chose this car because it was highly recommended by both Car and Driver (a great driver's car) and Consumer Reports (for its reliability). Plus, it's much more affordable than an Audi Quattro!
