1997 Chevrolet Monte carlo recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 1997 Chevrolet Monte carlo.
- Manufacturer: DELPHI
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY:PRESSURE RELIEF DEVICES
- Summary: CERTAIN DELPHI FUEL PRESSURE REGULATORS, P/NOS. FP10020-11B1, FP10026-11B1, AND FP10027-11B1, SOLD AFTER JANUARY 9, 2007, AS AFTERMARKET EQUIPMENT FOR VARIOUS PASSENGER VEHICLES LISTED ABOVE. THE UNIVERSAL PRESSURE REGULATORS (UPR) WERE PRODUCED WITHOUT AN O'RING AND RETAINER.
- Consequence: FUEL MAY LEAK, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A FIRE.
- Remedy: DELPHI WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND REPLACE THE UPR FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 23, 2007. OWNERS CAN CONTACT DELPHI AT 877-411-8770.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: STEERING:RACK AND PINION
- Summary: CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES HAVE LOWER PINION BEARINGS IN THE POWER RACK AND PINION ASSEMBLY IN WHICH THE RETAINER TABS WERE NOT CRIMPED PROPERLY. THESE RETAINERS COULD FAIL AND PERMIT THE BALL BEARINGS TO ESCAPE.
- Consequence: IF THIS OCCURS, THE PINION SHAFT CAN BE FORCED UPWARD DURING LEFT TURNS AND BACK DOWN AS THE STEERING WHEEL IS MOVED BACK AND TO THE RIGHT. IF THE PINION SHAFT MOVES FURTHER, THE DRIVER WILL NEED TO EXERT MORE EFFORT TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL, SIMILAR TO A VEHICLE WITHOUT POWER ASSISTED STEERING. IF THE PINION SHAFT MOVES EVEN FURTHER, THE DRIVER WILL REQUIRE MUCH HIGHER EFFORT TO TURN LEFT AND MAY NOT BE ABLE TO TURN THE WHEEL AS MUCH AS INTENDED. WITH THE MAXIMUM PINION SHAFT MOVEMENT, WHICH REQUIRES INTERNAL GEAR COMPONENT DAMAGE, THE DRIVER CAN ENCOUNTER HIGH RESISTANCE TO TURNING LEFT, FOLLOWED BY UNINTENDED POWER ASSIST TO THE RIGHT. IN ANY OF THESE CONDITIONS, A CRASH COULD OCCUR.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW LOWER PINION BEARING UNLESS INSPECT OF THE EXISTING BEARING INDICATES THAT REPLACEMENT OF THE GEAR ASSEMBLY IS NECESSARY. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 5, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080; CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438; OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-630-6537; OR PONTIAC AT 1-800-620-7668.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS
- Summary: THIS IS NOT A SAFETY RECALL IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE SAFETY ACT. HOWEVER, IT IS DEEMED A SAFETY IMPROVEMENT CAMPAIGN BY THE AGENCY. VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: 1995-1999 CHEVROLET MONTE CARLO Z34 PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE BRAKING PERFORMANCE IN WET WEATHER OR WET ROAD CONDITIONS IS REDUCED MORE THAN A DRIVER WOULD EXPECT.
- Consequence: THE BRAKING COULD FEEL DELAYED MOMENTARILY WHEN LIGHT OR MODERATE FORCE IS APPLIED ON THE BRAKE PEDAL WHILE DRIVING ON WET ROADS OR AFTER GOING THROUGH A CAR WASH.
- Remedy: DEALER WILL MODIFY THE FRONT FENDER LINERS TO REMOVE A PORTION OF THE CLOSEOUT PANELS IN THE FRONT WHEEL WELLS AT NO CHARGE TO THE CONSUMER. THIS SERVICE WILL BE AVAILABLE THROUGH AUGUST 2004.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 97 Monte Carlo. I've been driving it for over a year now and I'm happy to report that I've put over 65,000 miles on it without any issues at all! It's been a reliable companion on both highways and back roads, getting me an impressive 27 mpg and 23.5 mpg respectively. Even on days where I'm in the car all day long, I still find it comfortable and enjoyable to drive. I'm so grateful that I stumbled upon this car!
-
The car has been running great since I owned it. Although it doesn't take hits well, it is still reliable and easy to work on. While the fuel economy could be better, it is still a great car. It would be even better if it was rear wheel drive like the 80's Monte Carlo. Overall, I think this car is really great!
-
My girlfriend totaled her previous 1995 Monte, so I got her this one, and we both drive it everywhere. What we know is that these cars are reliable, low maintenance, and have good gas mileage. They are also very comfortable. This car only has 115k miles, cold a/c, and everything works perfectly. You should definitely consider getting one!
-
Overall, my wife and I have grown attached to this car. Although we have had to replace or repair something at least once a year, it is still better than paying a big price for a new car! Every now and then, I enjoy driving it if my wife lets me. I bought this car for her as an Easter gift and she really loves it.
-
I'm glad to hear that you've had few problems with your car. It sounds like your wife really enjoys driving it and has no plans to get rid of it anytime soon!

I have had a challenging experience with my latest car purchase. Despite investing a significant amount of money, the car has not performed as expected. Unfortunately, mechanics have been unable to resolve the issues with the motor, and I have received a low trade-in offer. I have had to replace several parts, including the motor, fuel pump, water pump, timing belt, thermostat, and alternator. The back brakes are also in need of repair, and the strut is broken. Additionally, the transmission is weak, and the car's fuel efficiency has decreased. Despite these setbacks, I remain committed to finding a solution to these issues.
Cristian Robel 2024-08-16
Two weeks after I bought this car, I had to have it repainted because the clearcoat was chipping all over the place. Although everything was fine for the next year or two, the seat belts stopped retracting, the air conditioner went out, the fuel pump went out, and the paint on the door started chipping again. In the last six months, I have had to have the fuel injection cleaned and replaced. It seems like there are some recurring issues with this car. Perhaps GM should consider recalling it.

Overall, sounds like you've got a decent reliable car with a strong engine that will drive for several thousand miles. Just be aware that there may be some minor repairs that will add up in the long run, such as the fuel pump, water pump, alternator, battery, and coil pack, which have all needed replacement in the past 3 years. But don't worry, it's still a good buy for the money!
