1998 Chevrolet Monte carlo recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 1998 Chevrolet Monte carlo.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 1998-1999 Chevrolet Lumina and Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1997-2004 Buick Regal and Pontiac Grand Prix, 2000-2004 Chevrolet Impala, and 1998-2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo vehicles. The affected vehicles were previously repaired under recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, and 15V-201 to address the possibility that engine oil may drip onto the hot exhaust manifold.
- Consequence: Engine oil that drips onto the hot surface of the exhaust manifold may result in a fire.
- Remedy: The remedy applied under recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, and 15V-201 did not adequately remove the safety risk. Under the improved remedy, dealers will replace the engines front valve cover and gasket. Vehicles that are covered by recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, or 15V-201 that have not yet received the original remedy will instead receive the improved remedy under the original recall number. The recall began on February 19, 2016. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Oldsmobile customer service at 1-800-442-6537 and Pontiac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is 15757. Note: Until the improved remedy has been applied, owners are advised to park their vehicle outside since the fire risk exists even when the vehicle is unattended.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: GENERAL MOTORS IS RECALLING 1,497,516 MY 1997-2003 BUICK REGAL, MY 1998-2003 CHEVROLET LUMINA, MONTE CARLO AND IMPALA, MY 1998-1999 OLDSMOBILE INTRIGUE, MY 1997-2003 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 3.8L V6 NATURALLY ASPIRATED ENGINE. SOME OF THESE VEHICLES HAVE A CONDITION IN WHICH DROPS OF ENGINE OIL MAY BE DEPOSITED ON THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD THROUGH HARD BRAKING.
- Consequence: IF THE MANIFOLD IS HOT ENOUGH AND THE OIL RUNS BELOW THE HEAT SHIELD, IT MAY IGNITE INTO A SMALL FLAME AND MAY SPREAD TO THE PLASTIC SPARK PLUG WIRE CHANNEL AND BEYOND INCREASING THE RISK OF AN ENGINE COMPARTMENT FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE ENGINES FRONT VALVE COVER AND FRONT-VALVE-COVER GASKET WITH NEW PARTS OF AN IMPROVED DESIGN AND REMOVE THE ENGINES PLASTIC COVER AND PLASTIC OIL-FILL-TUBE EXTENSION, FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING MAY 2016. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-630-6537, AND PONTIAC AT 1-800-620-7668 OR HTTP://WWW.PONTIAC.COM OR HTTP:WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.
- Manufacturer: DELPHI
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY:PRESSURE RELIEF DEVICES
- Summary: CERTAIN DELPHI FUEL PRESSURE REGULATORS, P/NOS. FP10020-11B1, FP10026-11B1, AND FP10027-11B1, SOLD AFTER JANUARY 9, 2007, AS AFTERMARKET EQUIPMENT FOR VARIOUS PASSENGER VEHICLES LISTED ABOVE. THE UNIVERSAL PRESSURE REGULATORS (UPR) WERE PRODUCED WITHOUT AN O'RING AND RETAINER.
- Consequence: FUEL MAY LEAK, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A FIRE.
- Remedy: DELPHI WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND REPLACE THE UPR FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 23, 2007. OWNERS CAN CONTACT DELPHI AT 877-411-8770.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: STEERING:RACK AND PINION
- Summary: CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES HAVE LOWER PINION BEARINGS IN THE POWER RACK AND PINION ASSEMBLY IN WHICH THE RETAINER TABS WERE NOT CRIMPED PROPERLY. THESE RETAINERS COULD FAIL AND PERMIT THE BALL BEARINGS TO ESCAPE.
- Consequence: IF THIS OCCURS, THE PINION SHAFT CAN BE FORCED UPWARD DURING LEFT TURNS AND BACK DOWN AS THE STEERING WHEEL IS MOVED BACK AND TO THE RIGHT. IF THE PINION SHAFT MOVES FURTHER, THE DRIVER WILL NEED TO EXERT MORE EFFORT TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL, SIMILAR TO A VEHICLE WITHOUT POWER ASSISTED STEERING. IF THE PINION SHAFT MOVES EVEN FURTHER, THE DRIVER WILL REQUIRE MUCH HIGHER EFFORT TO TURN LEFT AND MAY NOT BE ABLE TO TURN THE WHEEL AS MUCH AS INTENDED. WITH THE MAXIMUM PINION SHAFT MOVEMENT, WHICH REQUIRES INTERNAL GEAR COMPONENT DAMAGE, THE DRIVER CAN ENCOUNTER HIGH RESISTANCE TO TURNING LEFT, FOLLOWED BY UNINTENDED POWER ASSIST TO THE RIGHT. IN ANY OF THESE CONDITIONS, A CRASH COULD OCCUR.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW LOWER PINION BEARING UNLESS INSPECT OF THE EXISTING BEARING INDICATES THAT REPLACEMENT OF THE GEAR ASSEMBLY IS NECESSARY. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 5, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080; CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438; OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-630-6537; OR PONTIAC AT 1-800-620-7668.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS
- Summary: THIS IS NOT A SAFETY RECALL IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE SAFETY ACT. HOWEVER, IT IS DEEMED A SAFETY IMPROVEMENT CAMPAIGN BY THE AGENCY. VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: 1995-1999 CHEVROLET MONTE CARLO Z34 PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE BRAKING PERFORMANCE IN WET WEATHER OR WET ROAD CONDITIONS IS REDUCED MORE THAN A DRIVER WOULD EXPECT.
- Consequence: THE BRAKING COULD FEEL DELAYED MOMENTARILY WHEN LIGHT OR MODERATE FORCE IS APPLIED ON THE BRAKE PEDAL WHILE DRIVING ON WET ROADS OR AFTER GOING THROUGH A CAR WASH.
- Remedy: DEALER WILL MODIFY THE FRONT FENDER LINERS TO REMOVE A PORTION OF THE CLOSEOUT PANELS IN THE FRONT WHEEL WELLS AT NO CHARGE TO THE CONSUMER. THIS SERVICE WILL BE AVAILABLE THROUGH AUGUST 2004.

Awesome car! It has great style and handling, with amazing burnout/smoking capabilities. It's definitely an incredible vehicle.
-
I bought this car on a whim when I took the car that I owned in for an oil change. I loved it so much from the get go that I cancelled the oil change and arranged to buy this car. The GM's 3800 V6 is wonderful and powerful, the seats are comfy. I really enjoy the good stereo and love the steering wheel controls. I actually like this much better than the newer Montes.
-
I love my Monte, but there are a few things that could be improved. Firstly, the driver's seat could use more support to provide a better grip. Secondly, the seat belt guide can be a bit annoying when trying to get something or someone out of the backseat. Thirdly, the fit of the passenger airbag could be better. Fourthly, I added stiffer tires to improve its cornering ability. Fifthly, I have had to replace the lid on the center console twice after leaning over it to get something out of the back. Sixthly, GM's dedication to the

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it back in January of 2001 with 45,000 miles on it, and I have to say, it was a great investment. I drove that car everywhere and never had to put it in the shop. I made sure to take really good care of it, getting regular oil changes and new tires when needed. I even purchased an extended warranty when I first bought the car, which gave me peace of mind. However, when the warranty ran out in October of 2002, I decided to trade the car in. At that point, it had 76,000 miles on it, and I still never had a problem with it. Overall, I'm really happy with my experience with this car!
-
It's a great all-around car to have! I purchased it a year ago with 97,000 miles on it. Although it had a few issues with the directional switch right away, the dealer was able to fix it. The starter also had a problem, but thankfully my warranty covered it. Other than that, the car is quite solid and the engine still purrs like it did when it was brand new. I have no major complaints, as all other problems are minor. Unfortunately, the hinge on the storage compartment broke on mine and the transmission doesn't seem to grip right away when shifted into park (it coasts a bit and then snaps to a rest pretty hard). Additionally, the gas mileage isn't great on mine, averaging 22 mpg, but I'm purchasing some upgrades to improve that.

Overall, it's not a bad car. It has good power and the interior is nicely laid out. However, I've had to replace the rotors on this car three times already (both front and back) and the brake pads about five times (also both front and back). My major concern is how a car that I purchased brand new in '98 for about 22K can be appraised for only 4.5K just three years later. Yes, I do put excessive mileage on the car, but I keep it in immaculate condition both inside and out. The turning radius on this car is very poor at best and the paint job scratches and dents very easily.

Despite the unfortunate incident of the engine catching on fire, the car is a spacious and impressive vehicle.

When I bought the car, it had a whine coming from the power steering pump, but that was fixed by replacing the hose with a larger diameter one. I had to replace the alternator three times, each time with a new battery. The car gets an average of 19 mpg for fuel economy. The ride is smooth and the power is great. Unfortunately, the anti-lock brakes and AC are not working and repairing them would be too expensive.

First brakes at 44700, all wheels wearing very evenly. New brake pads squeak, however. Just had the first new battery at 45000. The original corroded severely, and the positive post fell off the battery. It is recommended to change it out after 3-4 years, regardless of condition. The battery is very difficult to access, located under the windshield washer. The hood sheet metal is very thin and weak, so it dents if you push it closed. Please be careful when closing the hood.

I bought the car back in January 2003 and have had it for a year now. It's a decent looking car, but now that I'm nearing 100,000 miles, it seems like everything is going wrong at once. When you accelerate to 3500, the transmission shifts very hard when it's warm, but when it's cold, it's smooth as a daisy. Unfortunately, it's leaking oil from the pan and the windows don't roll all the way up when it's cold. Additionally, the anti-lock light is on and it seems that the shocks are going. I do regular maintenance and change the oil, but I just don't understand what's going on.
