Common 1996 Chevrolet Monte carlo problems

The 1996 Chevrolet Monte Carlo is known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners of this car.

One of the most reported problems is the Passlock Security system, which was designed to prevent car theft but has caused issues for many owners. The system can sometimes lock out the actual owner, making it difficult or impossible to start the car. This problem is particularly prevalent in the 1996 Monte Carlo, with many owners reporting issues with the system.

Another common problem with the 1996 Monte Carlo is leaking coolant due to intake manifold gasket failure. This issue has been reported by five owners of the 1996 model, with an average cost to fix of $1,100 and an average mileage of 55,000 miles.

A clicking noise from the steering column when braking is also a common problem in the 1996 Monte Carlo, with five owners reporting this issue. This problem can be caused by a variety of issues, including worn-out steering column bearings or a problem with the brake system.

The 1996 Monte Carlo also has issues with the engine not starting or turning over, with two owners reporting this problem. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including a dead battery, a faulty ignition system, or a problem with the fuel system.

Finally, the "service engine soon" light staying on is a common problem in the 1996 Monte Carlo, with two owners reporting this issue. This problem can be caused by a variety of issues, including a faulty oxygen sensor, a problem with the fuel system, or a problem with the emissions control system.

In addition to these problems, the 1996 Monte Carlo has also been subject to recalls, including a recall for engine and engine cooling problems and a recall for electrical system problems. The engine and engine cooling recall affects certain 1998-1999 Chevrolet Lumina and Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1997-2004 Buick Regal and Pontiac Grand Prix, 2000-2004 Chevrolet Impala, and 1998-2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo vehicles. The recall was issued due to the possibility that engine oil may drip onto the hot exhaust manifold, which could cause a fire. The recall affects vehicles that were previously repaired under recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, and 15V-201. The electrical system recall affects 6,729,742 model year 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo, 1997-2005 Chevrolet Malibu, 1999-2004 Oldsmobile Alero, 1998-2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1999-2005 Pontiac Grand Am and 2004-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix vehicles. The recall was issued due to the possibility that the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine. This could result in the airbag system not deploying in a crash situation, increasing the risk of injury.

In conclusion, the 1996 Chevrolet Monte Carlo has several common problems based on complaints from owners of this car. These problems include issues with the Passlock Security system, leaking coolant due to intake manifold gasket failure, a clicking noise from the steering column when braking, the engine not starting or turning over, and the "service engine soon" light staying on. The car has also been subject to recalls for engine and engine cooling problems and electrical system problems.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-01-14
  • VIN: 2G1WW12M8T9
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: THE PROBLEM DESCRIBED BELOW HAS OCCURRED ON 3 PREVIOUS OCCASIONS.(1) EVENTS LEADING UP TO THE FAILURE - "DEX COOL" COOLANT LEAK FROM INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET. 2) FAILURE AND ITS CONSEQUENCES - LOSS OF COOLANT LEADING TO ENGINE OVERHEATING OR FAILURE. (3) WHAT WAS DONE TO CORRECT THE FAILURE; I.E, PARTS REPAIRED OR REPLACED (AND IF OLD PART IS AVAILABLE) - GM STARTED USING "DEX-COOL" EXTENDED LIFE COOLANT IN 1996 IT DIDN'T TEST THE LONG TERM AFFECTS ON IT'S EXISTING GASKET TECHNOLOGY. ONE ARTICLE I READ STATED "IT APPEARS THAT ON SOME ENGINES, THE USE OF CONVENTIONAL PLASTIC-AND-RUBBER GASKETS IN COMBINATION WITH MORE AGGRESSIVE OAT (ORGANIC ACID TECHNOLOGY) ENGINE COOLANTS HAS CAUSED A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF SEALING RELATED ISSUES FOR CONSUMERS AND AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE PROVIDERS", SAID FEL-PRO CHIEF ENGINEER JERRY ROSENQUIST -- PER P://WWW.THEAUTOCHANNEL.COM/NEWS/2004/10/14/252583.HTML. DEX-COOL IS AN OAT COOLANT MANUFACTURED BY TEXACO FOR GM. OVER THE PAST FEW DAYS I'VE READ MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT GM INTAKE GASKET LEAKS AND IT SEEMS MORE LIKELY THAT THE COOLANT, RATHER THAN THE GASKET ITSELF, IS CAUSING THE PROBLEM.*AK

SERVICE BRAKES, AIR PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2003-02-09
  • VIN: 2G1WW12M9T9
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, AIR
  • Summary: I WAS RECENTLY DRIVING MY 1996 CHEVROLET MONTE CARLO LS (VIN # [XXX]) ON THE HIGHWAY DURING A HEAVY RAINSTORM. I KEEP NOTICING THAT THE BRAKES FELT LIKE THEY WERE NOT WORKING WHEN I APPLIED BRAKE PRESSURE. AFTER A SHORT WHILE THE BRAKES WOULD BEGIN TO FEEL AS THOUGH THEY WERE FUNCTIONING AND THE CAR WOULD SLOW DOWN. AFTER NOTICING THIS PROBLEM, I SEARCHED FOR RECALLS ON MY VEHICLE AND CONTACTED MY DEALER. THE DEALER'S RECORDS SHOWED THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS ON MY VEHICLE. HOWEVER, THE NHTSA WEB SITE INDICATED TWO PROBLEMS. ONE WAS A RECALL, WHICH APPLIES ONLY TO VEHICLES MANUFACTURED DURING A SPECIFIC TIME PERIOD. THE OTHER NOTICE WAS FOR A SAFETY IMPROVEMENT CAMPAIGN (APPARENTLY DIFFERENT FROM A RECALL). THE NHTSA NUMBER FOR THIS CAMPAIGN IS 011014000. THE NHTSA WEBSITE STATES THAT THIS CAMPAIGN ONLY APPLIES TO THE Z34 VERSION OF THE 1996 MONTE CARLO. THE PROBLEM THAT IS DESCRIBED IS EXACTLY WHAT I HAVE EXPERIENCED WHEN DRIVING MY LS MONTE CARLO IN WET CONDITIONS. IT APPEARS TO ME THAT THE Z34 AND THE LS VERSIONS OF THE 1996 MONTE CARLO HAVE IDENTICAL FENDER WELLS AND LINERS AND WOULD EXPERIENCE IDENTICAL WET BRAKING PROBLEMS, THEREBY REQUIRING THE SAME FENDER LINER MODIFICATION. THUS, THIS SAFETY PROBLEM IS NOT LIMITED TO THE ONLY Z34 MODEL AND THIS CAMPAIGN SHOULD BE EXTENDED TO ALL 1995-1999 CHEVROLET MONTE CARLO VEHICLES. I WOULD LIKE THE MANUFACTURER TO MODIFY MY VEHICLE SO THAT I WILL NOT EXPERIENCE WET BRAKE FADING AND BE ABLE TO PROPERLY STOP MY CAR WHEN DRIVING IN WET CONDITIONS. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

Negative 1996 Chevrolet Monte carlo car reviews

  1. Cortez Sporer 2024-11-20

This car has unfortunately experienced several issues within a short period of time. However, we have taken the necessary steps to address these problems, including rebuilding the engine and transmission, replacing the Theftlock system, and installing a new alternator. We are confident that these repairs will ensure the car's reliability and longevity in the future.

  2. Devon Zulauf 2024-07-04

The first set of wires went at about 30k and were replaced under warranty. The second set went at about 80k. Unfortunately, the alternator died at 84,000 miles and the water pump and thermostat had to be replaced at 105,000. After the transmission went at 110,000 miles, I thought I had rebuilt the car and would get a few years of trouble-free use, but I was wrong. I have had to replace the thermostat, wires, battery, water pump, tires, and the head gasket is shot. I am disappointed with my experience and will not be purchasing another Chevy.

  3. Kris Beer 2024-02-23

Starts rough, engine dies when warm andmust be re-started, moonroof stuck openwith no manual close and/or listing asto motor location.

  4. Manley Schoen 2024-02-15

If you're thinking about purchasing a Monte Carlo from 1995-1999, I would suggest looking into other options. Unfortunately, these models have received poor reviews and may not be the best investment. I personally had some mechanical issues with mine and ended up spending over $5000 in repairs over the course of almost 4 years. A significant portion of that money went towards fixing the engine and transmission. Just something to keep in mind!

Positive 1996 Chevrolet Monte carlo car reviews

  1. Ladarius Harber 2025-01-04

My parents bought this car for me when I started college, hoping it would last me through my studies. It was a used car, one year old, and we got it for $17,000. It had 22,000 miles on it, having been a rental car. My dad was a bit hesitant, but I couldn't resist the bright red paint and spoiler. After we tinted the windows and put on 17

  2. Titus Prosacco 2024-11-27

The only big problem was the alternator. The car handles like a mix between a sports car and a luxury car.

  3. Dayne Block 2024-10-28

I bought this car 2 years ago and I have to say, I'm really happy with it. The 3.4L Engine still performs really well for an 11 year old car and I get about 27 miles per gallon on the highway and 19-21 in the city. The keyless entry is such a nice feature to have, especially on a 10 year old car. The power windows and locks work great and the stereo system sounds really good. The front seats are very comfortable, especially with the power seats. I've only sat in the back once, but I found it to be pretty comfortable (and I'm a big guy at 6'2 and 225 pounds). The leather seats still look great and haven't shown any signs of wear. The exterior is amazing - when I bought it with 85,000 miles, there were no rust spots or chips. People always think the car is newer than it actually is. I even added an aftermarket spoiler with LED tailamps (not too showy, though).

  4. Jordon Grant 2024-09-19

Overall, I think it was a good purchase, but it can be expensive to maintain. The driver compartment is comfortable, but it can be a bit tight for rear passengers. I found it to be a joy to drive, and contrary to others' experiences, I've enjoyed good fuel economy, for example, 28 mph on the highway and 21 in the city. The black exterior/interior and styling (with rear spoiler) are eye-catching and appealing. I have driven it for over 336,000 miles - yes, that's over a third of a million! I have only had to replace the timing belt at 300,000 miles and the transmission at 320,000 miles, and I have serviced the car at the dealership over 50 times in the 8 years of ownership. I expect to sell it for $3,000 in the spring of 2006.

I'm so glad to hear that you're satisfied with your purchase! It sounds like the car rides smoothly, which is great. If you're looking to replace the radio with a CD player, I'm sure you'll be able to find a great option. And I agree, the car looks fantastic overall!
