2002 Buick Regal problems
The Buick Regal is a line of mid-size cars marketed by Buick since 1973. For nearly its entire production, the Regal has served as the premium mid-size/intermediate offering of the Buick product range. Introduced as a submodel of the Buick Century, the model line is currently in its sixth generation. From the 1970s to the 1990s, the Regal served as the Buick counterpart of the Pontiac Grand Prix and Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme.
Originally introduced as a personal luxury coupe, the Regal was later expanded to a full model line. To showcase its success in NASCAR racing, from 1982 to 1987, Buick introduced the Buick Regal Grand National, Regal T-Type, and the limited-production Buick GNX. During the 1990s, while the four-door sedan superseded the two-door coupe entirely, forced-induction engines made their return, with superchargers replacing turbochargers.
For 1999, the Buick Regal inaugurated the sale of GM vehicles in the Chinese market, with the 1997 design lasting through 2008. Following the 2004 model year, Buick retired the nameplate in North America, with the Regal replaced by the Buick LaCrosse.
For 2008, Opel introduced the Opel Insignia as its largest sedan, with Buick rebranding the model line as the Regal for the Chinese market. For 2011, GM reintroduced the Regal to North America, rebranding the Insignia sedan for North America. For 2018, Buick introduced the second-generation Opel Insignia, sourcing all production from Germany; alongside a first-ever liftback sedan, the Regal TourX was the first Buick station wagon in 22 years.
After 2020, as the division shifted away from car model lines, Buick ended sales of the Regal in North America.

2002 Buick Regal recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 2002 Buick Regal.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 1998-1999 Chevrolet Lumina and Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1997-2004 Buick Regal and Pontiac Grand Prix, 2000-2004 Chevrolet Impala, and 1998-2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo vehicles. The affected vehicles were previously repaired under recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, and 15V-201 to address the possibility that engine oil may drip onto the hot exhaust manifold.
- Consequence: Engine oil that drips onto the hot surface of the exhaust manifold may result in a fire.
- Remedy: The remedy applied under recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, and 15V-201 did not adequately remove the safety risk. Under the improved remedy, dealers will replace the engines front valve cover and gasket. Vehicles that are covered by recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, or 15V-201 that have not yet received the original remedy will instead receive the improved remedy under the original recall number. The recall began on February 19, 2016. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Oldsmobile customer service at 1-800-442-6537 and Pontiac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is 15757. Note: Until the improved remedy has been applied, owners are advised to park their vehicle outside since the fire risk exists even when the vehicle is unattended.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: GENERAL MOTORS IS RECALLING 1,497,516 MY 1997-2003 BUICK REGAL, MY 1998-2003 CHEVROLET LUMINA, MONTE CARLO AND IMPALA, MY 1998-1999 OLDSMOBILE INTRIGUE, MY 1997-2003 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 3.8L V6 NATURALLY ASPIRATED ENGINE. SOME OF THESE VEHICLES HAVE A CONDITION IN WHICH DROPS OF ENGINE OIL MAY BE DEPOSITED ON THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD THROUGH HARD BRAKING.
- Consequence: IF THE MANIFOLD IS HOT ENOUGH AND THE OIL RUNS BELOW THE HEAT SHIELD, IT MAY IGNITE INTO A SMALL FLAME AND MAY SPREAD TO THE PLASTIC SPARK PLUG WIRE CHANNEL AND BEYOND INCREASING THE RISK OF AN ENGINE COMPARTMENT FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE ENGINES FRONT VALVE COVER AND FRONT-VALVE-COVER GASKET WITH NEW PARTS OF AN IMPROVED DESIGN AND REMOVE THE ENGINES PLASTIC COVER AND PLASTIC OIL-FILL-TUBE EXTENSION, FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING MAY 2016. Well... not exactly... but this car is a sleeper. Just put your foot on the gas and you're off to 60 in no time. BMWs need to watch out! I have the Abboud series, so the colors and signage on the car are a little fancy and unique. It's very comfortable... and... did I say fast? I love this car.

I recently went back to an old friend, the Buick Regal GS from '94, and found that I still love it just as much as before... and even more! The car handles beautifully, has a stunning navy blue exterior, and boasts impressive power and performance that is always there when you need it. The interior is also a delight, with comfortable leather seats, a moonroof, and a top-of-the-line 'Monsoon' cassette/CD player. Overall, I was able to purchase this dealer demo for a great price and believe that it offers tremendous value in today's auto market.

This was a great find! For those of you who think that this is an old person's car, think again. It has the comfort of a luxury vehicle but the power of a sports car :)

The car is both simple and elegant. It is highly functional and has a conservative style that will remain fresh for years to come.

I've been driving a 1998 Buick Regal LS for the past five years, but I just traded it in for a 2002 Buick Regal GS Sedan with a turbocharger. As a big fan of muscle cars, I love it when my cars perform quickly and quietly. Over the years, I've owned Chryslers, Pontiacs, and Oldsmobiles, and I've enjoyed driving all of them. Although the 1998 was leaking a small amount of oil, it ran so well that I didn't want to get rid of it. However, I decided that upgrading to the 2002 model was a wise move. I briefly tried a 2006 Chevy Impala, but I found the ride and performance of the Buick to be far superior. I only just purchased it on April 13th, 2006, so I'll have to drive it more to see if it compares as well as the 1998, which was excellent. The only drawback is that it requires 91 octane fuel.

It sounds like you had a good experience with the car overall, but unfortunately experienced some issues with the steering and engine. It's always frustrating when a car doesn't live up to expectations, especially when you've taken good care of it. According to your mechanic, this is a common issue with Buick and Pontiac cars that have the 3.8 engine. They recommend using the best synthetic oil, such as Mobil One, every 2000 miles to help prevent these issues from occurring. I hope this information helps!

Our grandmother gave us this car because our 94 Plymouth Voyager finally gave out. She only drove it to the country club and the store. They took a Honda CRV for road trips. Now my family travels a lot. So we took it down to Florida and unfortunately, the car couldn't get over 55MPG coming back. The O2 Sensor or MAF sensor would go out a lot, causing us to stall at intersections. Despite its basic exterior and interior, the car has Monsoon Speakers that provide great sound. However, the handlebars and cup holders are quite cheap and break easily. Replacing the taillights is also a bit of a pain, especially the four trunk ones. The dashboard also needed to be replaced, which cost around $2000. Overall, this car may not be the best choice for someone who doesn't want to spend money on frequent repairs. Unfortunately, it doesn't have Bluetooth or MP3/Aux Input. We are trading it in today.
