2014 Chevrolet Malibu problems
The Chevrolet Malibu is a mid-size car manufactured and marketed by Chevrolet from model years 1964–1983 and since 1997. The Malibu began as a trim-level of the Chevrolet Chevelle, becoming its own model line in 1978. Originally a rear-wheel drive intermediate, GM revived the Malibu nameplate as a front-wheel-drive car in 1997.
Named after the coastal community of Malibu, California, the Malibu was marketed primarily in North America, with the eighth generation introduced globally. It is currently the only sedan offered by Chevrolet in the U.S.
First generation (Chevelle Malibu, 1964)
The first Malibu was a top-line subseries of the mid-sized Chevrolet Chevelle from 1964 to 1972. Malibus were generally available in a full range of bodystyles including a four-door sedan, two-door Sport Coupe hardtop, convertible and two-seat station wagon. Interiors were more lavish than lesser Chevelle 300 and 300 Deluxe models thanks to patterned cloth and vinyl upholstery (all-vinyl in convertibles and station wagons), deep-twist carpeting, deluxe steering wheel and other items. The Malibu SS performance package was available only as a two-door Sport Coupe hardtop or convertible and added bucket seats, center console (with optional four-speed manual or Powerglide transmissions), engine gauges and special wheelcovers, and offered with any six-cylinder or V8 engine offered in other Chevelles - with the top option being a 300 hp (224 kW; 304 PS) 327 cu in (5.4 L) in 1964.
For 1965, Malibus and other Chevelles received new grilles and revised tail sections and had the exhaust pipes replaced but carried over the same basic styling and bodystyles from 1964. The Malibu and Malibu SS models continued as before with the SS featuring a blacked-out grille and special wheelcovers. Top engine option was now a 350 hp (261 kW; 355 PS) 327 cu in (5.4 L) V8. 201 of the 1965 Malibu SS cars got Regular Production Option (RPO) Z16, which include a heavily modified chassis and Chevy's new 375 horsepower 396 cubic inch V8. All were hardtops, although rumors persist that one convertible was built.
The Malibu SS was replaced in 1966 by a new Chevelle SS-396 series that included a big-block 396 cu in (6.5 L) V8 engine (Canadian market did not receive the SS396 but marketed the former Malibu SS nameplate until January 1967 when it was phased out), heavy duty suspension and other performance equipment. Other SS-396 equipment was similar to Malibu Sport Coupes and convertibles including an all-vinyl bench seat. Bucket seats and console with floor shift were now optional on the SS and for 1966 with the SS now denoting a car with a big-block engine, the bucket seats became a new option on the regular Malibu Sport Coupe and convertible, upon which any six-cylinder or small-block V8 could be ordered. Also new for 1966 was the Chevelle Malibu four-door Sport Sedan hardtop. Styling revisions on all 1966 Chevelles including more rounded styling similar to the full-sized Chevrolets with sail panels and tunneled rear windows featured on two-door hardtop coupes.
For 1967, the same assortment of bodystyles were continued with styling changes similar to all other Chevelles including a new grille and revised tail section with taillights that wrapped around to the side. New this year was a Chevelle Malibu Concours station wagon with simulated woodgrain exterior side panel trim. Front disc brakes were a new option along with a stereo 8-track tape player. The same assortment of drivetrains carried over from 1966 with the top 327 cu in (5.4 L) V8 dropped from 350 to 325 hp (261 to 242 kW; 355 to 330 PS).

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-04
- VIN: 1G11B5SL6EF
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Hello. I have a 2014 Malibu. Recently it has been stalling when coming to a stop and yet there are no engine/warning lights on. Took it to numerous mechanics, spoke with people at the dealership service area and yet nothing! Nobody can figure it out at all. I’ve had the throttle body replaced, module piece, and a few other parts by someone who previously worked at the Chevrolet dealership and even they can’t figure it out. This is not only a safety hazard but a very uncomfortable feeling riding a car and having to put it into Neutral when approaching a light or stop sign ! My car will tell me if my turn signal is on for longer than 2-3 minutes so I’m not understanding why it won’t tell me why my car is shutting off. I’m frustrated because I’m paying different mechanics to figure it out and it’s still an unsolved problem! It would be nice if Chevrolet can look at everyone’s vehicle and not charge this time!! I have children so having them ride in a car that stalls is UNACCEPTABLE!

- Summary: While driving 60 MPH on the highway my car started stuttering then lost all power. It threw 3 codes P0131, P2097 and P0171. I have spent over $1,000.00 and a month later they tell me it was my intake bolts that were loose. They replaced every part PCV valve, MAF sensor, O2 sensor and car still wouldn't run right. PLEASE address this issue as that is UNSAFE for a car to just stop on the highway.
POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-08
- VIN: 1G11B5SL8EF
- Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The Auto Stop/Start feature is experiencing issues where the vehicle fails to restart, resulting in significant disruptions during driving scenarios such as heavy city traffic, stop-and-go traffic, and maneuvering through busy intersections. These incidents not only cause traffic jams and congestion but also force detours for other drivers. Particularly, when encountering highway traffic from exit offramps, sudden stops due to overcrowding and tailgaters trigger the Malibu to auto stop without restarting, creating considerable challenges, especially during rush hours in cities like Atlanta. In each of these circumstances, attempts to restart the vehicle prove futile as the engine endlessly turns over without success. While resolving these situations required considerable effort and time, further elaboration is beyond the scope of this discussion, given the valuable time already expended on addressing these issues.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-16
- VIN: 1G11E5SL7EF
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I have a 2014 Malibu with 87,450 miles. It has worked perfectly up until 6 months ago. It started stalling in traffic intersections and at stop signs, which is a dangerous safety issue. The Auto Stop would engage and then when I put my foot on the accelerator, it stalled out. I would turn the vehicle off and restart it. I took it to countless mechanics who could not figure out what was causing the problem because the Check Engine light did not come on and no codes were triggered. The problem became worse over time and once the vehicle stalled, it would not immediately restart. I took it to my Chevy Dealer and they were baffled as well. They uploaded new software which included the Auto Stop feature, but it continued to stall. They replaced the front battery and checked the one in the trunk. It still stalled. The Dealer said that since the Check Engine light did not come on, they were shooting in the dark. I asked them to disconnect the Auto Stop function, but they said that they couldn't. Unlike other models, there was no disconnection method. I have looked at many on-line chats on the 2014 Chevy Malibu and this defect in the Auto Stop function seems pretty prevalent. No one has come up with a workable solution. I filed a Notice of Claim with Chevrolet corporate and asked them to provide a fix. Does anyone have any ideas of either how to fix the Auto Stop or to disable it? Right now I am shifting into neutral at all traffic signals and stop signs, so that the Auto Stop function does not engage, but that seems like a poor fix to the problem.
SUSPENSION,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-09
- VIN: 1G11E5SL2EF
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: 6 months ago our car’s auto stop/start feature started to malfunction. The car will stall and sputter on the start after coming to a stop. This is very dangerous! On multiple occasions, the car would not accelerate through a turn on a light stalling out in the intersection. we have also been nearly rear-ended at red lights because the vehicle will not accelerate on a green light. This issue is well discussed on the Internet with many owners reporting the same issue. Chevrolet should be held accountable for this repair. This is not an isolated event with my vehicle.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-01
- VIN: 1G11C5SL1EF
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Variable valve timing system Rocker arm oil control valve solenoid Need help asap! My car is unsafe!
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-16
- VIN: 1G11B5SL8EF
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: No incident has occurred, thankfully. Car was purchased used in January 2018. It is now approximately about 9 years old. This issue happens intermittently but the electrical systems seem to be misfiring. Basically, it gives false negatives/positives. (1) The check engine comes on and off all the time even after servicing the vehicle with the mechanic. (2) The passenger seat has front airbags that get activated when someone sits in the seat. Lately, the seatbelt alert goes off while nothing heavy is in the seat. I have to latch the seatbelt to get that alert to stop. (3) The automatic lights that come on when you open the door sometimes don't turn on and the auto lights indicator is on. (4) Lately, when I have turned off the engine and opened the door, the radio won't turn off even after I have removed the keys. Electrical malfunctions could be happening due to the wrong wires being installed or something and may cause the car not to work any longer. I'm not sure but I don't want to encounter issues while I'm driving.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-06-01
- VIN: 1G11C5SL2EF
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: When I stop my auto stop kicks in and when I take my foot off the brake my car rolls up a little and ends up dying. I have to turn it off and start it up giving it gas to get it going. There have been a couple instances when making a left turn I have almost gotten hit. I am no longer comfortable driving my car. There are several people posting about it online but no reason or fix for it as far as I know of. I have called the dealer and if course they want me to bring it in but I have no money for someone to go on a wild goose chase with my car. I think this should be something Chevrolet needs to figure out.
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-01
- VIN: 1G11H5SL6EF
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: The automatic start and stop function does not work properly. When the car comes to a stop and auto stops, the vehicle shuts off and does not power up when you hit the gas. My safety is put at risk due to the car shutting off and the possibility of someone hitting me. The vehicle has been inspected countless times. I was told it was an electrical issue. Then told it was the battery. Brand new battery and issue isn’t fixed. The car cut off once and all the lights came on. Now no lights comes on it just cuts off.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-22
- VIN: 1G11C5SLXEF
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Auto Start Stop Function (ASSF) malfunction. When releasing foot off brake when (ASSF) was engaged, engine failed to restart. After putting car in park and restarting the engine, it took multiple attempts for car to restart. This has happened numerous times, all of which have been while city driving (i.e. stopping at stop lights, waiting to turn in turn lane, stopped at stop sign) High safety concern for me and for other drivers on roadway. vehicle has been looked at by automotive shop, no definitive answer for the cause. no warning lights or messages appear before/during/ or after malfunction.

- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014 Buick Lacrosse vehicles manufactured January 29, 2014, through March 31, 2014 and 2014 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles manufactured February 7, 2014, through March 31, 2014, and equipped with 17 inch front brake rotors. The affected vehicles may have had brake rotors intended for the rear of the car accidentally installed on the front. The rear rotors, while the same diameter, are thinner and may result in a front brake pad detaching from the caliper.
- Consequence: If a brake pad detaches from caliper, there may be a sudden reduction in braking, lengthening the distance required to stop the vehicle and increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the front brake rotors, and install the correct rotors with new brake pads, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on June 20, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors customer service at 1-800-521-7300 (Buick) or 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet). GM's number for this recall is 14128.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014 Buick Regal, LaCrosse, Verano, and Enclave, and Chevrolet Impala, Malibu, Cruze, and Traverse, and GMC Acadia vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions. In the affected vehicles, the transmission shift cable adjuster may disengage from the transmission shift lever. As such, these vehicles do not conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 102, "Transmission Shift Lever Sequence, Starter Interlock, and Transmission Braking Effect." They also fail to conform to FMVSS number 114, "Theft Protection and Rollaway Prevention."
- Consequence: If a vehicle's shift cable disengages from the transmission shift lever, a driver may be unable to shift gear positions and the indicated shift position may not represent the gear position the vehicle is in. Should a disengagement occur while the vehicle is being driven, when the driver goes to stop and park the vehicle, the driver may be able to shift the lever to the "PARK" position, but the vehicle transmission may not be in the "PARK" gear position. If the vehicle is not in the "PARK" position there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.
- Remedy: General Motors will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace any affected transmission shift cable adjusters, free of charge. The recall began on April 10, 2014. Chevrolet owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-222-1020, Buick owners at 1-800-521-7300, and GMC owners at 1-800-462-8782. General Motors' number associated with this recall is 14048.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: VISIBILITY:DEFROSTER/DEFOGGER/HVAC SYSTEM
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles manufactured June 12, 2013, through November 5, 2013. The heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) control in these vehicles may intermittently become inoperable when the vehicle is started, preventing the windshield defroster from working. Thus, these vehicles fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 103, "Windshield Defrosting and Defogging Systems."
- Consequence: The inability to turn on the windshield defroster may decrease the driver's visibility thereby increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will update the electronic climate control module software, free of charge. The recall began during December 2013. Owners may contact GM at 1-800-521-7300. GM's recall campaign number is 13380.

I leased this car back in 2013 and opted for the LT1 trim level. It has been a reliable ride for me as I commute to the next city on a weekly basis. The ride is smooth and the transmission is very efficient. Although I initially wanted a sunroof, I decided to go with remote start instead, which has been a great trade-off for the Ohio winters. The car handles the snow with ease. The exterior design is very sharp, but I did notice that the rear door trim is coming apart and the paint scratches easily. On the inside, everything is laid out nicely, and I particularly enjoy using OnStar and MyLink. However, the chrome interior can be a bit annoying.

Hey there! Just like a car needs a driver, a driver needs a car too!

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your new car! Even though it's smaller than your previous Jeep Grand Cherokee V6, it sounds like you're finding it to be a great fit. The driver leather power seat and good rear vision, along with the backup camera, are definitely nice features to have. It's great to hear that you're finding the touch controls easy to use and that the screen is easy to read. And I agree, the blue lighting adds a nice ambiance to the interior. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the car's steering and responsiveness. It sounds like you're really enjoying all the new features, which is fantastic. Stay safe on the road!

Super reliable vehicle. You'll be happy to know that I've only had the AC compressor rebuilt and bought new Michelin Tires.

I've been driving a 2014 Chevy Malibu LT for six years and absolutely love it! The interior feels high-end and luxurious, and the car drives smoothly. The trunk is surprisingly spacious for a sedan. Unfortunately, we're looking to trade it in because we now have two children and need more space for all their stuff when we travel. Recently, I've noticed some cracking on the driver's seat material, which is a bit of a downside. Additionally, the auto stop feature cannot be turned off, and sometimes the whole car will restart when it shuts off (causing the radio to restart, etc.). I've also experienced the car leaving autostop when I don't move at all. Finally, I haven't found an easy way to pop the trunk when the key is in the ignition, and there's no button for the trunk on the interior of the car. Despite these minor issues, I know I will miss my car so much when I trade it in!

I have expressed my concerns about the car's fuel consumption to GM multiple times, but unfortunately, it has not been helpful. Despite my efforts to drive carefully on highways, the MPG remains consistently low at around 25, which is disappointing. While the car's quality appears to be good, the fuel economy is a major drawback. Additionally, I have felt uneasy driving in snowy weather and have almost slid off the road while driving at a speed of 30 miles per hour. Furthermore, the car falls short in comparison to its competitors, even the basic models. Overall, I believe that Chevy has done an excellent job with many aspects of the car, but these issues have affected its ranking negatively.

Although my experience with this car was not great, I would recommend considering other options such as Honda, Toyota, or Kia. These brands have proven to be reliable and easy to service with minimal problems. Thank you for considering my opinion.

I purchased this car used with high hopes of it being a reliable and long-lasting vehicle. While the gas mileage is a positive aspect, unfortunately, the sheet metal is quite poor. I noticed two dents on the top of the car after my son leaned on it while talking on his cell phone (which should not have caused any damage). If you prefer a car with a straight body, I would advise against putting any pressure on this car. The driver's side door beauty cover at the top of the door is already loose, and the front bumper fascia is misaligned with the other side. Adjusting the seat for daily driving can be a bit of a challenge, so I recommend finding your ideal position and leaving it there. Additionally, the car sits quite low to the ground, which may be problematic for those with knee issues. The backup camera is helpful in this regard, but it can still be difficult to see behind the car. At 6 feet tall, I find it a bit of a hassle. The transmission can be indecisive at times, and the start-stop feature is not worth the investment. It is also worth noting that there is no interior trunk release button, which can be a minor inconvenience. As a Chevy enthusiast, it pains me to speak negatively about this car. However, I must admit that my 99 Toyota Camry, with over 220k miles, has better fit and finish. If you are looking for a reliable and long-lasting car, I would recommend considering other options.

This car has poor gas mileage and burns more gas than a V6. It has been unreliable for me, with the transmission needing to be rebuilt twice - once at around 40k miles and again at 60k. Although I do a lot of driving, I don't think that's an excuse for the car falling apart with only 80k miles on it. My advice to anyone looking for a nice, reliable car is to definitely avoid this one. I hope my review was helpful. I wish I had read some reviews before purchasing this vehicle.
