2020 Chevrolet Malibu problems
The Chevrolet Malibu is a mid-size car manufactured and marketed by Chevrolet from model years 1964–1983 and since 1997. The Malibu began as a trim-level of the Chevrolet Chevelle, becoming its own model line in 1978. Originally a rear-wheel drive intermediate, GM revived the Malibu nameplate as a front-wheel-drive car in 1997.
Named after the coastal community of Malibu, California, the Malibu was marketed primarily in North America, with the eighth generation introduced globally. It is currently the only sedan offered by Chevrolet in the U.S.
First generation (Chevelle Malibu, 1964)
The first Malibu was a top-line subseries of the mid-sized Chevrolet Chevelle from 1964 to 1972. Malibus were generally available in a full range of bodystyles including a four-door sedan, two-door Sport Coupe hardtop, convertible and two-seat station wagon. Interiors were more lavish than lesser Chevelle 300 and 300 Deluxe models thanks to patterned cloth and vinyl upholstery (all-vinyl in convertibles and station wagons), deep-twist carpeting, deluxe steering wheel and other items. The Malibu SS performance package was available only as a two-door Sport Coupe hardtop or convertible and added bucket seats, center console (with optional four-speed manual or Powerglide transmissions), engine gauges and special wheelcovers, and offered with any six-cylinder or V8 engine offered in other Chevelles - with the top option being a 300 hp (224 kW; 304 PS) 327 cu in (5.4 L) in 1964.
For 1965, Malibus and other Chevelles received new grilles and revised tail sections and had the exhaust pipes replaced but carried over the same basic styling and bodystyles from 1964. The Malibu and Malibu SS models continued as before with the SS featuring a blacked-out grille and special wheelcovers. Top engine option was now a 350 hp (261 kW; 355 PS) 327 cu in (5.4 L) V8. 201 of the 1965 Malibu SS cars got Regular Production Option (RPO) Z16, which include a heavily modified chassis and Chevy's new 375 horsepower 396 cubic inch V8. All were hardtops, although rumors persist that one convertible was built.
The Malibu SS was replaced in 1966 by a new Chevelle SS-396 series that included a big-block 396 cu in (6.5 L) V8 engine (Canadian market did not receive the SS396 but marketed the former Malibu SS nameplate until January 1967 when it was phased out), heavy duty suspension and other performance equipment. Other SS-396 equipment was similar to Malibu Sport Coupes and convertibles including an all-vinyl bench seat. Bucket seats and console with floor shift were now optional on the SS and for 1966 with the SS now denoting a car with a big-block engine, the bucket seats became a new option on the regular Malibu Sport Coupe and convertible, upon which any six-cylinder or small-block V8 could be ordered. Also new for 1966 was the Chevelle Malibu four-door Sport Sedan hardtop. Styling revisions on all 1966 Chevelles including more rounded styling similar to the full-sized Chevrolets with sail panels and tunneled rear windows featured on two-door hardtop coupes.
For 1967, the same assortment of bodystyles were continued with styling changes similar to all other Chevelles including a new grille and revised tail section with taillights that wrapped around to the side. New this year was a Chevelle Malibu Concours station wagon with simulated woodgrain exterior side panel trim. Front disc brakes were a new option along with a stereo 8-track tape player. The same assortment of drivetrains carried over from 1966 with the top 327 cu in (5.4 L) V8 dropped from 350 to 325 hp (261 to 242 kW; 355 to 330 PS).

Common 2020 Chevrolet Malibu problems
The 2020 Chevrolet Malibu has been reported to have several engine problems, including crank no start, extended crank, and engine misfire.
Another common problem with the 2020 Chevrolet Malibu is rapid brake wear, which has been reported by owners at around 30,000 miles. The stock brakes on the car tend to wear out quicker than other cars, with replacing the brake pads costing around $350 and a new set of rotors being roughly $600.
The electronic "Shift to Park" system in newer Chevy Malibu models, including those released between 2016 and 2020, has been known to fail, causing the car to be unable to recognize when it is in park, preventing drivers from turning their cars off. This issue has resulted in General Motors issuing recalls and currently facing a lawsuit.
The quality of the transmissions used within Chevy Malibus is often criticized, with models reaching around 100,000 miles experiencing hefty jerking and difficulty changing gears.
The 2020 Chevrolet Malibu also has issues with its fuel pump, with some models experiencing complete failure, leading to a loss of power.
There is only one recall on the 2020 Chevy Malibu, which covers the seat belt retractors which were not secured properly. Chevrolet will re-install the retractors for free on affected models.
A well-maintained 2020 Chevrolet Malibu can last around 200,000 miles, which is roughly 100,000 miles less than the long-lasting Toyota Camry. Regular annual maintenance costs are slightly higher than some competitors, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $503 per year.
The 2020 Chevrolet Malibu is reasonably safe, earning 4 out of 5 stars in government crash tests. It comes standard with a rearview camera. Optional upgrades include adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, along with forward collision warning.
In summary, the 2020 Chevrolet Malibu has several common problems, including engine issues, rapid brake wear, transmission problems, and fuel pump failures. While these issues can be costly to repair, regular maintenance and care can help prevent them. The car has a strong safety record and can last around 200,000 miles with proper maintenance.

SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-05
- VIN: 1G1ZD5ST0LF
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: On [XXX] I was driving to work and my check engine light came on. Immediately after this I was completely unable to brake. My brake pedal became so stiff and impossible to press. I very narrowly avoided an accident. I had the car towed to an auto shop where I was informed that I had a vacuum pump failure that essentially exploded and destroyed my cam shaft and shot fragments of metal into my engine in the process. I was quoted over $12,000 in repairs. After receiving this quote I began searching online to find what could have caused this to happen. I stumbled upon a class action lawsuit for this EXACT same thing (plaintiff [XXX] ). In addition to the suit there were 12 PAGES of comments from other Malibu owners who have experienced similar issues with their vacuum pump and braking system. This issue is also noted on MANY car repair forums, Chevy owner forums, YouTube repair videos etc. Please note that when I received the check engine light on 9/5 this is the first and only time I had any indication of a potential problem with my vehicle. In the year and a half that I have owned the car there has never been any issues, warnings or check engine lights. Sometimes I can jiggle the shift lever a little to make it go out, other times I have to start/stop engine , shift out and into park several times to make it go out. I don’t want to leave the vehicle without making sure it’s in park. I read in another complaint that the doors won’t lock, and that it goes into accessory mode and could drain the battery down if left that way, but I did not check if that happens on my vehicle. It just started doing this a few weeks ago. I have not contacted the dealership yet, but I understand that GM has put out a recall on the Malibu and other models concerning this issue. I am hoping it will cover my VIN. number soon. Thank you for taking time to read my complaint.

Driving a Malibu for the first time was an unforgettable experience for my wife and me. We rented one for our wedding week in 2021 and were amazed by its spaciousness, fuel efficiency, comfort, features, and style. The black wheels on our current Malibu add an extra touch of edge. Whether you're commuting or traveling for leisure, this car is the perfect choice! The sales team went above and beyond the typical car salesman experience, treating us like valued individuals.

I've been driving Chevys for years so I may be a bit biased. However, the Malibu I own is perfect for me. It has good mileage, comfortable seats, and easy-to-use controls. It's also one of the few sedans still available. I really appreciate the iconic Chevy look.

I really like everything about this car. The appearance is great and the Bose sound system is top-notch. The quality is hard to improve upon.

This car may not be the best in terms of quality when compared to Ford, Toyota, Honda and Subaru. However, spending an extra $1K to $2K on a car from these brands may be worth it and make you happier. I wish I had considered this before purchasing my current car. Now, I am looking to trade it in for another car.
Abe O'Reilly 2024-06-23
The 1.5 turbo engine in this POS may feel underpowered when pulling out and at low speeds, but it is important to note that this is a normal characteristic of the engine. While it may not be to everyone's liking, it is not a fault of the car itself. It is important to consider all factors before making a purchasing decision.
Alan Herman 2024-06-07
It seems like my car is not functioning properly as it keeps showing the 'reduce engine power' warning. This issue is not just limited to my car, but my friends who also own a Malibu have faced the same problem. It's frustrating to have the same problem occur three times within just four months and 15000 km, and even the mechanics seem to be unsure about how to fix it.
Curt Bechtelar 2024-04-15
The Malibu is a beautiful car, but it lacks some of the safety features that its competitors offer.
Ignatius Tillman 2024-03-13
The driver will find the car comfortable and easy to handle. Although there is a bit more engine noise than the competition, the interior has improved dramatically from older models. However, the proximity keyfob can be a bit annoying. You are forced to take the fob out to look at it in order to press the right part of the rubber monobutton on the control face. Additionally, the fob has lock and unlock buttons next to each other on a single surface, with no way to tell which button you're pushing by feel. The trunk unlatch button on the fob can also be balky. The buttons on the steering wheel are made in a cheap rubberized monobutton style.
