2017 Chevrolet Malibu problems
The Chevrolet Malibu is a mid-size car manufactured and marketed by Chevrolet from model years 1964–1983 and since 1997. The Malibu began as a trim-level of the Chevrolet Chevelle, becoming its own model line in 1978. Originally a rear-wheel drive intermediate, GM revived the Malibu nameplate as a front-wheel-drive car in 1997.
Named after the coastal community of Malibu, California, the Malibu was marketed primarily in North America, with the eighth generation introduced globally. It is currently the only sedan offered by Chevrolet in the U.S.
First generation (Chevelle Malibu, 1964)
The first Malibu was a top-line subseries of the mid-sized Chevrolet Chevelle from 1964 to 1972. Malibus were generally available in a full range of bodystyles including a four-door sedan, two-door Sport Coupe hardtop, convertible and two-seat station wagon. Interiors were more lavish than lesser Chevelle 300 and 300 Deluxe models thanks to patterned cloth and vinyl upholstery (all-vinyl in convertibles and station wagons), deep-twist carpeting, deluxe steering wheel and other items. The Malibu SS performance package was available only as a two-door Sport Coupe hardtop or convertible and added bucket seats, center console (with optional four-speed manual or Powerglide transmissions), engine gauges and special wheelcovers, and offered with any six-cylinder or V8 engine offered in other Chevelles - with the top option being a 300 hp (224 kW; 304 PS) 327 cu in (5.4 L) in 1964.
For 1965, Malibus and other Chevelles received new grilles and revised tail sections and had the exhaust pipes replaced but carried over the same basic styling and bodystyles from 1964. The Malibu and Malibu SS models continued as before with the SS featuring a blacked-out grille and special wheelcovers. Top engine option was now a 350 hp (261 kW; 355 PS) 327 cu in (5.4 L) V8. 201 of the 1965 Malibu SS cars got Regular Production Option (RPO) Z16, which include a heavily modified chassis and Chevy's new 375 horsepower 396 cubic inch V8. All were hardtops, although rumors persist that one convertible was built.
The Malibu SS was replaced in 1966 by a new Chevelle SS-396 series that included a big-block 396 cu in (6.5 L) V8 engine (Canadian market did not receive the SS396 but marketed the former Malibu SS nameplate until January 1967 when it was phased out), heavy duty suspension and other performance equipment. Other SS-396 equipment was similar to Malibu Sport Coupes and convertibles including an all-vinyl bench seat. Bucket seats and console with floor shift were now optional on the SS and for 1966 with the SS now denoting a car with a big-block engine, the bucket seats became a new option on the regular Malibu Sport Coupe and convertible, upon which any six-cylinder or small-block V8 could be ordered. Also new for 1966 was the Chevelle Malibu four-door Sport Sedan hardtop. Styling revisions on all 1966 Chevelles including more rounded styling similar to the full-sized Chevrolets with sail panels and tunneled rear windows featured on two-door hardtop coupes.
For 1967, the same assortment of bodystyles were continued with styling changes similar to all other Chevelles including a new grille and revised tail section with taillights that wrapped around to the side. New this year was a Chevelle Malibu Concours station wagon with simulated woodgrain exterior side panel trim. Front disc brakes were a new option along with a stereo 8-track tape player. The same assortment of drivetrains carried over from 1966 with the top 327 cu in (5.4 L) V8 dropped from 350 to 325 hp (261 to 242 kW; 355 to 330 PS).

Common 2017 Chevrolet Malibu problems
The 2017 Chevrolet Malibu has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. One of the most significant issues is related to the engine, with 148 complaints about the engine, 36 about fuel/propulsion, 89 about vehicle speed control, and 76 about the power train. The primary concern is the loss of engine power, which can occur suddenly and unexpectedly. This issue is attributed to fidgety computer control modules, but there has been no official recall or investigation yet.
Another common problem is related to the electrical system, with some drivers reporting random 'Shift to Park' messages that can drain the battery if left on overnight. This issue can be resolved by ensuring the computer knows the car is in park, but it can be annoying and potentially leave the driver stranded if not addressed promptly.
There have also been reports of fuel pump failures, which can cause the car to stall or not start. This issue is relatively uncommon and can be resolved with proper maintenance and care.
Similarly, some Malibu models have experienced air conditioning problems, including issues with the compressor and condenser. These issues are also relatively uncommon and can be easily resolved with proper maintenance and care.
Finally, there have been some recalls for the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu, including a recall for potential fuel leaks due to a potential fracture in the fuel pump flange weld. This recall affected approximately 900 Chevrolets and was issued in May 2018. It is essential to ensure that this recall is addressed promptly, as a fuel leak can be a severe safety hazard.
In summary, while the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu has been reported to have several common problems, most of these issues are relatively uncommon and can be easily resolved with proper maintenance and care. However, it is essential to address any recalls promptly to ensure the safety of the vehicle.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-11
- VIN: 1G1ZE5ST4HF
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I am writing to report a persistent issue with my Chevy Malibu, specifically related to the Stabilitrak system. The Stabilitrak light intermittently flickers on and off while driving, which raises significant safety concerns. This malfunction has been ongoing, and despite efforts to diagnose the problem, my local auto mechanic has been unable to pinpoint the exact cause. Services Performed: Initial diagnostic checks were conducted to identify any fault codes related to the Stabilitrak system. The mechanic found no definitive issues but noted that the warning light's behavior indicated a potential underlying problem. Each visit has led to additional uncertainty, with suggestions from the mechanic to proceed through the GM flow chart for further diagnosis. However, this approach may lead to extensive labor costs with no guaranteed resolution. Financial Burden: The recommendation to follow the GM flow chart for diagnosis is concerning, as it may result in significant and unnecessary expenses without a clear outcome. As a consumer, I believe that a properly functioning diagnostic system should provide clarity on such issues without incurring exorbitant costs. The erratic behavior of the Stabilitrak system poses a serious safety risk while driving. This system is critical for maintaining vehicle stability, particularly in adverse conditions, and its failure could lead to loss of control of the vehicle. I have been made aware of other drivers experiencing similar issues with their Chevy Malibu vehicles. It raises the question of whether there is a known defect in the Stabilitrak system that warrants a recall. I urge the NHTSA to investigate this matter further, as it seems that GM has not taken the necessary steps to address these concerns

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-01
- VIN: 1G1ZB5ST9HF
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: A "Shift to Park" message occasionally appears on the dash of my 2017 Chevy Malibu. I currently have 56570 miles on this vehicle. This is the second time that this issue has occurred in this vehicle. The first time it occurred I had 21849 miles on the car. On Dec. 20, 2019, a local Chevy dealership replaced the shifter (8460140 transmission electronic control replacement) at no charge since the car was still under warranty. My warranty is now expired but the same problem has occurred after putting less than 35000 miles on the car. Since this problem started, my back driver's side door will not always lock. This problem may be related to the Shift to Park issue. I have my invoice from the dealership where I first had this problem fixed and am hoping they will fix it again at no cost to me. When I searched this issue online, it appears to be a problem with many 2016-2019 Chevy Malibus. There should be a recall issued by GM for this problem. This is a safety issue because the problem will cause the battery to continuously die and the vehicle to remain running although the shifter has been placed in the Park position.

SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-01
- VIN: 1G1ZE5ST4HF
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: On Thursday, [XXX] my [XXX] son was driving my chevy malibu coming down the hill to get home when the brakes went out. He could not stop the vehicle and had to pass our neighborhood and let the vehicle slow itself down. He was able to get stopped and turned around and made it home. Saturday, [XXX] we decided maybe it needed new brakes and took it for new brakes. New brakes and rotors all the way around did NOT fix the problem. The brake was like hitting a brick and would not stop the vehicle. I had the vehicle towed to a repair shop and they found that the vacuum system for the brakes went out. He also noticed that cam shaft was cracked. Upon research through the internet I found that this problem is common and a class action suit has been filed against GM for the same problem. I am unsure why this is not a recall as its a safety issue and my son could have been injured or injured someone else. This has been an EXTREMELY expensive repair for us! When they went to replace the cam shaft there were several parts of the cam shaft just blown all over the engine. We still have not found all of the missing parts. This has caused most of the seals to have to be replaced as well. I do not have a repair receipt yet as the vehicle is still in the shop INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

- Summary: Vehicle shut down completely while at intersection with no warning including no dash board warnings, recently had vehicle repaired at dealership computer was replaced, injectors cleaned, fuel system flushed. This car is unpredictable at times and not safe if turning off with no warning, if I did get a warning it's after the vehicle shut down then started back up with "Stabil break" code and reduced steering. I have kept up with the maintence on this vehicle since purchase had no wrecks and it's money gone down the drain. These warning lights turn off and on. The dealer says this is the result of a plastic piece breaking due to general wear-and-tear and the only solutions are to replace the pistons or replace the whole engine. Multiple smaller repair shops say this is a known issue and it doesn't have any open recalls. [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The car experiences occasional lurching from a stopped position due to gears not engaging, and may stop hard as a result of gears shifting too soon, making it necessary to shift off and then back to reverse a second time. Despite the lack of error lights, I am confident that there is an issue that needs to be addressed. I will be taking the car to the dealership to have it inspected and resolved.

This car is fantastic! The ride is incredibly smooth and the gas mileage has been consistently in the mid 30's for mpg. It's spacious and comfortable, even for larger individuals. Despite being a 4 cyl, it still has plenty of power and the turbo makes it even quicker. While it would have been nice to have a spoiler and fog lights, the digital speedometer and gauges are all easy to read, even at night. The radio is top-notch with 8 speakers and the ability to play your own music through the mp3 port or USB drive. The Bluetooth and GPS are both easy to use and work flawlessly. I've owned this car for over a year now and it's still one of the best I've ever had. I did have a minor issue with the rear tail light shorting out in 2018, but it was covered under warranty and I haven't had any other problems since. Even after replacing two tires due to potholes, it's still my dream car!
-
The car has lots of leg room and trunk space, as well as fancy and techie features like hands-free cell phone, navigation system, and Onstar. However, it does get quite a bit of road noise due to its low-to-the-ground design. Additionally, the radio and air conditioner turn off when you're on the phone, which may not be ideal in hot climates if you talk frequently. Nonetheless, the car still has the get-up-and-go you need, even with a 4-cylinder engine.

I leased the 2017 Premier and it happened to have the Pearl White Paint. Unfortunately, it was the last Malibu available on the dealer's lot that day. However, I didn't want to spend too much time shopping around and the Premier seemed like the perfect fit. It has been a reliable and trouble-free car so far. The 2 Liter Turbo provides enough power to get around. The interior is decent, although there is a bit too much plastic for a car that costs around $35,000. On the plus side, I really enjoy the full moon roof and the ample trunk space with the seats folded down. The back seat is spacious and there are USB ports available as well. The My Link info system is user-friendly and I particularly appreciate the larger screen set into the dash. Unlike other cars that have a laptop-like screen stuck on top of the dash, the Premier's design is sleek and visually appealing. The wheels are large and provide excellent road grip, although I did have to pay over $400 to replace a flat tire. The pearl paint looks stunning when the car is clean and waxed. The drive is smooth and the speakers are decent, although they could be better. I appreciate all the standard safety features that come with the Premier. My lease is up on January 21st and after searching high and low for a new vehicle, I have decided to keep my 2017 Chevy Premier. The new models don't offer anything that I don't already have on this car, which only has 22,000 miles on it. I would highly recommend the Premier to anyone looking for a stylish, good-looking, and reliable car. I have certainly been happy with mine.

The auto stop/start feature of the car cannot be turned off. However, this feature should not deter you from purchasing the car as it has many other great features. As someone who has owned a Malibu for over 10 years, I can attest to the quality and reliability of the brand.

This car seems to have some noise issues when driving on rough roads. However, if you mainly drive in town, it could still be a decent car. While it may not have been the best GM car I've owned, I still think it has some redeeming qualities. Overall, it's not the best car out there, but it's not the worst either.

I really like the overall appearance of the car. I was pleasantly surprised by the power it has and it handles nicely. However, I did notice a couple of things that I wasn't a big fan of, such as the auto shut off at each stop and the way the steering wheel jerks when the car starts again. Additionally, I think it would be more convenient if the car had built-in navigation instead of having to connect your phone. While the seats aren't the most comfortable, the back does have lots of leg room.

Sometimes, everyday items can be frustrating. The interface with cell phones can be difficult and cumbersome, requiring physical connection for full interactivity. Bluetooth alone does not provide full functions. GPS can sometimes lead us in the wrong direction. Remote start is limited to two starts only, which can be a serious difficulty if you are unexpectedly delayed and need to start the car a third or more times. Additionally, the car will not warm the interior of the vehicle when remote started, even when the temperature and fan are set to high prior and after two starts. Unfortunately, the fan is weak, and the Malibu's dash and floor fan setting on high is equal to most other brands' low setting. Lastly, the auto start/stop feature can be annoying and cannot be turned off, creating an unsafe condition at times when parking. You can bypass it by shifting to L6, but it's rather inconvenient. The real kicker is that the auto stop/start offers no fuel mileage benefit, seeming more like a gimmick.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with Chevrolet vehicles. I've been driving them for 50 years and I have to say that I've noticed some issues with the noise level on most roads. It can be difficult to hear the radio or have a conversation with someone. However, I have found that the noise drops on smooth asphalt, which is a relief. Unfortunately, I have to say that this particular vehicle seems to be poorly engineered. Thank you for taking the time to read my thoughts!

It's wonderful if you're planning on keeping it for more than 2-3 years. I understand that all cars depreciate, but the Malibu seemed to have a rapid decrease in value. If you decide to buy it, make sure it's for the long term.
