The Chevrolet Malibu is a mid-size car manufactured and marketed by Chevrolet from model years 1964–1983 and since 1997. The Malibu began as a trim-level of the Chevrolet Chevelle, becoming its own model line in 1978. Originally a rear-wheel drive intermediate, GM revived the Malibu nameplate as a front-wheel-drive car in 1997.
Named after the coastal community of Malibu, California, the Malibu was marketed primarily in North America, with the eighth generation introduced globally. It is currently the only sedan offered by Chevrolet in the U.S.
First generation (Chevelle Malibu, 1964)
The first Malibu was a top-line subseries of the mid-sized Chevrolet Chevelle from 1964 to 1972. Malibus were generally available in a full range of bodystyles including a four-door sedan, two-door Sport Coupe hardtop, convertible and two-seat station wagon. Interiors were more lavish than lesser Chevelle 300 and 300 Deluxe models thanks to patterned cloth and vinyl upholstery (all-vinyl in convertibles and station wagons), deep-twist carpeting, deluxe steering wheel and other items. The Malibu SS performance package was available only as a two-door Sport Coupe hardtop or convertible and added bucket seats, center console (with optional four-speed manual or Powerglide transmissions), engine gauges and special wheelcovers, and offered with any six-cylinder or V8 engine offered in other Chevelles - with the top option being a 300 hp (224 kW; 304 PS) 327 cu in (5.4 L) in 1964.
For 1965, Malibus and other Chevelles received new grilles and revised tail sections and had the exhaust pipes replaced but carried over the same basic styling and bodystyles from 1964. The Malibu and Malibu SS models continued as before with the SS featuring a blacked-out grille and special wheelcovers. Top engine option was now a 350 hp (261 kW; 355 PS) 327 cu in (5.4 L) V8. 201 of the 1965 Malibu SS cars got Regular Production Option (RPO) Z16, which include a heavily modified chassis and Chevy's new 375 horsepower 396 cubic inch V8. All were hardtops, although rumors persist that one convertible was built.
The Malibu SS was replaced in 1966 by a new Chevelle SS-396 series that included a big-block 396 cu in (6.5 L) V8 engine (Canadian market did not receive the SS396 but marketed the former Malibu SS nameplate until January 1967 when it was phased out), heavy duty suspension and other performance equipment. Other SS-396 equipment was similar to Malibu Sport Coupes and convertibles including an all-vinyl bench seat. Bucket seats and console with floor shift were now optional on the SS and for 1966 with the SS now denoting a car with a big-block engine, the bucket seats became a new option on the regular Malibu Sport Coupe and convertible, upon which any six-cylinder or small-block V8 could be ordered. Also new for 1966 was the Chevelle Malibu four-door Sport Sedan hardtop. Styling revisions on all 1966 Chevelles including more rounded styling similar to the full-sized Chevrolets with sail panels and tunneled rear windows featured on two-door hardtop coupes.
For 1967, the same assortment of bodystyles were continued with styling changes similar to all other Chevelles including a new grille and revised tail section with taillights that wrapped around to the side. New this year was a Chevelle Malibu Concours station wagon with simulated woodgrain exterior side panel trim. Front disc brakes were a new option along with a stereo 8-track tape player. The same assortment of drivetrains carried over from 1966 with the top 327 cu in (5.4 L) V8 dropped from 350 to 325 hp (261 to 242 kW; 355 to 330 PS).

For some time now my car has been shaky. i have taken it in and balanced my tires because of this issue and nothing had helped. I am always scared to drive it because it has been so shaky but now that this message has popped up it’s even worse and it’s during my whole drive. Also every time i park it isn’t connecting and says “shift to park” even though it is shifted into park. i have to shake it and press some button to go all register that it is shifted into park and can shut my vehicle off. I have read every where that this issue has happened to so many 2016/2017 chevy Malibu’s. I have read the dangers and i do not feel safe driving my car like this. I also didn’t have my car when there was a recall on this exact part before. and i’m guessing the dealership who had it before me did not fix it, causing the problems to worsen other parts of my car. I can’t drive this car due to the safety and i believe it should be a recalled. I am not totally sure what is doing it but as of all the other people online, they said it has to do the gas pedal (2k replacement) and fuel pumps and also could have burned wires which my car also has. thank you.

I was driving 35 to 40 mph before vehicle slowed to almost a stop and when pressed gas pedal it excel slowly creeped to less than 30 MPH THANKFUL I wasn't rear-ended.Pulled into nearest Autozone part store and diagnostic scan showed the P2138 code. DC severity, sensor, and accelerator pedal position - see photos attached. Waited with engine off for approx over 30 minutes then started vehicle , engine lght off and proceeded to my destination excell with no issues.This has happened several times since purchase of vehicle began 2019. Throttle body repairs, ECM replacements and harness repairs later still reoccurring documented at dealships and repair shops. This is a serious and costly hazard.

They won't know until they start taking it apart. Was told it will take 12 hrs for each part at $180 an hr. Damage is estimated at $4500. Car is currently under an extended warranty, we are waiting to hear if the warranty will cover the damage. My son still owes $9000 on the car, we bought it 2 yrs ago. Beyond angry that Chevy/GM has not recalled this car!!!

Car is currently at a Mr. Tire facility. The manager ran diagnostic code - "reduce engine power" error and found the cause as the vacuum pump. Due to the time of the failure, late Saturday 9/14/24, the part cannot be ordered until Monday from the local Chevy dealership. The facility will not know if there is additional engine damage until the part is remove and inspected. There is known issues with vacuum pumps failing and a class action lawsuit currently in ligation.

The lost of oil has caused the engine to reduce the engine speed randomly on the highway which had risk of accidents multiple times, by unable to move the vehicle off the road at a reasonable time. The oil sips land on top of electrical wires which creates the risk of fire.

- Summary: On may 23,2024 I was on a very busy highway going 66. All of a sudden my 2016 malibu lt aburtely slowed to 27 miles an hour and two warnings lights came on 1 -engine power is reduced 2 - speed reduced to 27 I barely avoided getting hit by two semi trucks, as well as a car. The car is available for inspection on request. An independent service person confirmed it was indeed a defective electron control and acceleration peddle position sensor. How very irresponsible of you not to put out a recall on the 2016-2018 models knowing very well of the many class action law suits that have arrived from this issue. I probably can guarantee none of you own a Malibu. How very incredious it is that you put people lives in danger knowing that there was issues with the problem. Unbelievable. I almost got killed because of the lack of responsibility because you dint make a recall.

- Summary: Vehicle check Engine light on, showing "Reduced Engine Power." Vehicle still able to be driven, but will not accelerate with any proper pace or power. Cannot get above 3000 RPM without losing power, has put me in two dangerous situations in the last two days that almost made me lose my life. On highway, trying to accelerate to match traffic speeds, lose power and had to dive to the emergency lane to not get plowed by a truck. Today, was city driving, at a red light, could not accelerate and had to dive to a crawl the vehicle into a turn lane where I ended up sitting for about 10 minutes till the engine offered enough power to keep driving. By all information I can find online, it seems it is similar to the issues presented by others online and might tie into "Special Coverage N182188250 Loss of Continuity within Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor Circuit" that I found here: [XXX] , this issue has been going for about 3 weeks to a month and is only getting worse. I did stop at McCarthy Chevrolet of Overland Park to have codes run about on [XXX], the codes showing do not show in the above link...codes: U1502, U0422, P06DE, C0760...those all present on the paper as "Current." I have not had it diagnosed yet, planning to, service is just so expensive. I have had the car in my car for 1 year and 1 month, purchased from MAX Motors in Harrisonville, Mo. - Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2016-2018 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles. During servicing, a Passenger Presence System (PPS) may have been installed that was not correctly calibrated to the vehicle's seat type. As a result, the PPS may not properly identify an adult passenger from a child passenger in the front passenger seat, potentially causing the air bag to not deploy when it should, or causing the air bag to deploy when it shouldn't.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash, improper air bag deployment can increase the risk of injury.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger PPS seat service kit, free of charge. The recall began August 7, 2018. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is 18208.

- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2018 GMC Canyon, 2016-2017 Buick Envision, 2016-2018 Chevrolet Colorado and Malibu, 2017-2018 GMC Acadia, 2018 Buick LaCrosse, Cadillac ATS, Chevrolet Equinox, and GMC Terrain vehicles. The high pressure fuel pump may detach from its mounting flange, possibly resulting in the pump damaging the high pressure fuel line.
- Consequence: A damaged fuel line can create a fuel leak, increasing the risk of a fire.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the high pressure fuel pump, and high pressure fuel pipe, free of charge. The recall began July 2, 2018. - Consequence: If the air bag tears during deployment, the air bag may not perform as designed, increasing the risk of injury in the event of a crash.

- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Buick Verano and 2016 Chevrolet Malibu as the electronic park lock lever may allow the ignition key to be removed without the transmission being in PARK. Also, certain 2013 Buick Encore, 2011 Buick Regal, 2013-2014 Buick Verano, 2011-2016 Chevrolet Cruze, 2010-2013 Chevrolet Equinox 2013-2015 Chevrolet Malibu, and 2011-2013 GMC Terrain vehicles may have been serviced with similar defective replacement electronic park lock levers. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 114, "Theft Protection and Rollaway Prevention."
- Consequence: If the key is removed without the transmission in PARK, the vehicle may rollaway as occupants are exiting, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and if necessary replace the key cylinder lock housing, free of charge. The recall began on October 14, 2016. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, Buick 1-800-521-7300, and GMC 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 50490 and 50491.

- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2016 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles manufactured March 7, 2016, through March 12, 2016. The memory chip in the electronic brake control module (EBCM) may fail and cause the loss of electronically controlled brake systems including anti-lock brakes (ABS) and electronic stability control (ESC). As such, these vehicles fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 126, "Electronic Stability Control Systems."
- Consequence: If the EBCM fails the primary braking system will still function, however, the loss of ABS and ESC increase the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install a replacement EBCM, free of charge. The recall began on June 17, 2016. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020). GM's number for this recall is 39440.

The two weld studs that mount the front and rear side impact air bags may fracture and separate from the air bag during deployment. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 214, "Side Impact Protection."
- Consequence: Fractured weld studs may allow the side air bag to move out of position during deployment, increasing the risk of injury.

Miles per gallon were better than EPA estimates. All repair issues have been fixed and the car has been a pleasure to drive. After 2 years, the car developed a lot of rattles in the driver's door and dash, but overall, the quality of the car is still good and I would buy it again. Now, after 3 years, I have had no new issues and the door rattle has gone away.

I have the 2016 Malibu LT with the Convenience and Technology Package and I absolutely love it! The exterior is stunning and always catches people's attention. The car has been amazing in terms of saving me money on gas! I recently traded in my GMC Terrain, which was rated at 32 MPG, but I was lucky to get 23 MPG, mostly on highway miles. However, with my Malibu, I can actually get 35 MPG! It's such a smooth and quiet ride. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a car. It feels like a full-size family car with so much room inside and in the trunk.

I recently purchased a 16 Malibu hybrid to replace my Jetta tdi (scandal buyback). However, I have been disappointed with the fuel economy as I have yet to get better than 35 mpg out of a tank, with a lifetime average of 34.7mpg over 6300 miles. As someone who drives 60,000 miles per year, this translates to an extra $2000 in fuel costs getting only 75% of the window sticker economy of 48 mpg. Despite contacting GM, they were unable to help and suggested it was my driving habits. While I have been happy with other GM products in the past, this experience has left me feeling disappointed. I would advise anyone considering a Malibu to invest in a travel pillow for your back, especially if you drive for long periods of time.

I purchased this car brand new in October of 2016 and it has been a reliable vehicle in terms of engine power and fuel economy. However, I have had some issues with the electronics in the car. At only 10k miles, I had to have the Accelerator Pedal assembly replaced due to the car displaying an “ENGINE REDUCED POWER” message and several dash lights appearing, causing the car to reduce speed from 50 to about 20. Fortunately, the issue was resolved under warranty. At 34k miles, I had to have the whole shifter assembly replaced because the car displayed a “Shift To Park” message when I turned the car off, even though I knew for a fact that it was in park. Again, this issue was resolved under warranty. At 60k miles, I had to have the third brake light replaced due to a water leak that made its way into the trunk. However, this issue was resolved under a recall. Despite these initial problems, I have put 82k miles on the car and it has held up well. I live in Atlanta where I sit in traffic a lot, but I still get at least 30 combined MPG off 90 miles a day, 6 days a week, and 40% of it is sitting in traffic. The brakes have at least 45% left, and the only other things I have had to replace are the Engine Air Filter, Cabin Air Filter, Brake Fluid, Transmission Fluid, and Tires. Overall, it is a good car that has served me well.

This is the Premier line. Although I am disappointed in the car, I appreciate its sleek design and somewhat enjoyable driving experience. However, I have noticed some under dash rattling and door panel chattering, which detracts from the overall experience. In my family, we have owned a variety of cars from different brands, including 3 Jeeps, 2 Dodges, 1 Ford, 3 Hondas, and 2 Hyundais, all of which have proven that cars can be made without rattling. While this car may not be my top choice, I understand that everyone has different preferences and experiences. It is important to find a car that suits your needs and preferences.

After driving 4500 miles, I decided to give the car to my niece due to experiencing hip pain caused by the driver's seat's relationship to the gas and brake pedal. Unfortunately, the brake pedal needed to move 2 inches to the right, and the seat was uncomfortable, requiring an additional 2-3 inches of foam. I test drove over 20 cars to ensure I wouldn't end up with the same ergonomic nightmare as the Malibu. I eventually settled on a 2016 Altima, and the hip pain disappeared within two weeks thanks to the comfortable seats. While the Malibu may drive slightly better and have better steering feel, it's not worth the discomfort and frustration. I highly recommend taking a 30-minute test drive to ensure the front driver's seat is comfortable for you. In my experience, the Malibu's seats were some of the worst I've ever experienced, almost as bad as the 1998 Geo Prizm. I'm currently in the process of trading in the Malibu, even before making a payment on it, due to the uncomfortable seating position. The bottom cushion is too thin and points upwards at the edge, making it too short. It's almost as if they prioritized good interior materials and design over comfortable seats. Personally, I would trade hard plastic for good seats without a second thought.

I purchased my car in February and have only driven it for 12000 miles. Unfortunately, the high pressure fuel pump failed, which caused significant damage to the engine. While I have experienced some frustration with the dealership taking over a week to source the necessary parts, I am hopeful that the issue will be resolved soon. I am aware of another 2016 Malibu at the dealership that is also waiting for parts for the same issue. Overall, I appreciate the car's luxurious features, but I have been disappointed by its reliability.
