2014 Audi A8 problems

audi logo

The Audi A8 is a full-size luxury sedan manufactured and marketed by the German automaker Audi since 1994. Succeeding the Audi V8, and now in its fourth generation, the A8 has been offered with both front- or permanent all-wheel drive—and in short- and long-wheelbase variants. The first two generations employed the Volkswagen Group D platform, with the current generation deriving from the MLB platform. After the original model's 1994 release, Audi released the second generation in late 2002, the third in late 2009, and the fourth and current iteration in 2017. Noted as the first mass-market car with an aluminium chassis, all A8 models have used this construction method co-developed with Alcoa and marketed as the Audi Space Frame.

A mechanically upgraded, high-performance version of the A8 debuted in 1996 as the Audi S8. Produced exclusively at Audi's Neckarsulm plant, the S8 is fitted standard with Audi's quattro all-wheel drive system. The S8 was only offered with a short-wheelbase for the first three generations, being joined by a long-wheelbase variant for the fourth generation.

D2 (Typ 4D; 1994–2002)

Development

In 1982, Ferdinand Piëch signed an agreement with Aluminum Company of America. The objective was to design and develop a car that would be substantially lighter than any other vehicles in its class (to compensate for the fact that standard all-wheel drive was around 100 kg (220 lb) heavier than competitors' rear-wheel drive). In the late 1980s, it was decided that the target vehicle would be a successor to the V8 (Typ 4C) flagship introduced in 1988. By 1990, a final design by Chris Bird and Dirk van Braeckel was chosen and frozen for series production in mid-1991. In September 1993, the Audi Space Frame (ASF) Concept was unveiled at the 1993 Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) as a D2 Typ 4D prototype in polished aluminum. Pilot production began in December 1993 and development ended in early 1994, at a total cost of $700 million (£418.1 million).

Common 2014 Audi A8 problems

The Audi A8 D4, produced between 2011 and 2017, is known for its luxurious interior and advanced technology

. However, like any vehicle, it has common problems that potential buyers should be aware of.

One common issue is related to the coolant valve, which may leak, allowing coolant to enter the engine control module

. This can lead to various problems, including engine damage, and may require the replacement of the coolant valve.

Another issue is related to the fuel system, specifically the fuel supply line and fuel rails

. These components can become clogged, leading to reduced fuel flow and potential engine performance issues. Regular maintenance and cleaning of these components can help prevent these issues.

The thermostat is also a common problem area in the Audi A8 D4

. A malfunctioning thermostat can lead to overheating, which can cause serious engine damage. Regular inspection and replacement of the thermostat can help prevent these issues.

The FSI/TFSI engine in the Audi A8 D4 is known for carbon build-up, which can lead to reduced engine performance and fuel efficiency

. Regular use of premium fuel and maintenance can help prevent this issue.

Premature suspension wear is also a common problem in the Audi A8 D4, particularly in higher mileage vehicles

. Regular inspection and replacement of suspension components can help prevent these issues.

In addition to these mechanical issues, the Audi A8 D4 can also experience electrical problems, particularly in older vehicles with higher mileage. These can include issues with the sat-nav, air-con, and starting the car. Regular inspection and maintenance of electrical components can help prevent these issues.

The Audi A8 D4 is also known for having problems with the MMI (Multi Media Interface), which can be caused by software faults or hardware failure. If you experience any issues with the MMI, it is recommended to have a specialist look at it to identify the exact problem.

Other common problems in the Audi A8 D4 include water in the footwell, timing chain rattle, electronic handbrake problems, air temperature sensor failure, door micro switch failure, loss of power steering, bumpy driving, engine rattle, and grinding noise on gear changes.

Overall, while the Audi A8 D4 is a luxurious and advanced vehicle, potential buyers should be aware of these common problems and take steps to prevent and address them through regular maintenance and inspection.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-05
  • VIN: WAUR2AFD0EN
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I was driving along on the highway, at normal speeds. When my engine started surging, causing me to speed up and slow down rapidly. Putting the safety of others behind and in front of me in danger. No check engine or any light of that nature turned on. then after another mile or so my engine sputtered then just died. I had to pull to the left side of the road since there way a semi truck to my right and it was rush hour here on [XXX] in Denver, CO. I don't know what the issue was but I was worried if the people behind me could easily get out from behind me as I almost caused a rear end collision. I'm taking my A8 into the mechanic this coming Monday to find out exactly what was wrong. But engines shouldn't just die out on you on the highway. ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-30
  • VIN: WAUAGAFD3EN
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The oil strainer needs to be replaced in my car. This is a known issue with Audi and there are many recalls on Audis, with the exception of mine. I read that this can lead to the engine stopping and causing an accident and it can ruin the engine. This has been problem has been reported to me by an independent service center.

STEERING,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-29
  • VIN: WAUR2AFD9EN
  • Components: STEERING,ENGINE
  • Summary: Turbos failed. Was traveling home on a highway, when i pulled off the engine suddenly stalls out and loss of steering occurs as the engine system automatically puts you in park. Switching to neutral leads to a very 'leaden'/heavy driving feeling (Kind of like with no Power steering, but a little better). Able to get it restarted again with some effort. Car will stall out at any point in time when RPM is 1200 or less (you have about .25s to get it back out of that range or it stalls again). Power is sluggish. To avoid stalls, shifts must be rapid and neutral-shift+gas needs to be applied to prevent RPM from being below 1200. Made it home safely, but had it towed to dealership. Dealership notified me that it was a turbo failure, both impellers have become lodged in the side of turbo casing and are stalled out. Nothing preceded this; no engine lights or anything. Effect was sudden and drastic. Temperatures were fine. Attempt to drive to repair shop led to total loss of coolant. It is believed this is a seperate issue.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-11-05
  • VIN: WAUR2AFD3EN
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: My Audi Certified Preowned A8L, 4.0 TFSI suffered a complete turbocharger failure without any notice. The car went into service 9/30/2013. I purchased the car from the same dealer that originally sold the car in Stratham, New Hampshire on 12/26/2016. I purchased an extended warranty from the dealership for 8 years, 100,000 miles. Thus, the extended warranty expired on 9/30/2021. Car has always been serviced by this Audi Stratham Dealership. During a routine trip, car stalled, went into neutral upon entering a stoplight/intersection and would not re-start. Had to be towed. No modifications ever made to this vehicle. Recently had 75,000 mile service interval completed by Audi. Car now has 81,000 miles. ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-05-26
  • VIN: WAUR2AFD1EN
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: For technician report, go to: https://getpe.co/4ZT0j2 While driving on a major central NJ highway, slowing to exit, the vehicle shuddered and stalled in lane. The engine EPC light came on and a message to put the car in park to start the engine followed. This made it impossible to move the car off the road. It was necessary to stand behind the vehicle and wave traffic around. A passerby was able to get the car started and moved it off the exit and to a service road shoulder. The car shuddered and died again. Traffic was heavy and the situation was quite dangerous. The car was taken to the dealer. The turbocharger impeller shaft and fins were damage. Please see above link. Also, please see Audi Technical Bulletin 2044640. This is not a unique event.

STEERING,POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-05-22
  • VIN: WAUR2AFD2EN
  • Components: STEERING,POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Driving home from church, heard a rattle, like a stick was stuck underneath. Then felt loss of power. No warning/engine check light, but car stalled while I was turning left off a highway. When car stalled I had no warning, and no steering or brakes. Husband was able to assist with getting care off road and out of oncoming traffic. We were worried about being able to avoid pedestrians at the corner as we had NO control and they did not seem to be aware of the emergency. Looked online and saw lots of similar stories. Exactly like what happened to us. Mechanic says turbo chargers failed. One is sheered off and one is rubbed/failing. Audi quoted us $14,000 to repair. Car is at 80,700 miles which seems to be 700 miles out of warrantee. All service work has been done by Audi and recorded. Audi is unwilling to help with this issue. This has to be the most scary incident driving I have ever had. It was shocking that there was no warning. And I lost both steering and braking assist while crossing a travel lane and making a turn. It appears that Audi is aware that they have filter/check valve issues for the turbo charger oil supply. They have since upgraded these parts but have failed to replace the faulty parts when cars like ours go in for service. They have also failed to warn people of this potential hazard. We have called Audi Corporate and they say there is nothing they can do to help.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-05-20
  • VIN: WAUR2AFDXEN
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Driving on extended highway - a few hours - and complete engine failure at an exit. Unsafe as the engine died in the middle of the road. Took multiple attempts to move the vehicle. Blocked traffic and had to have police assist with the physical pushing of the vehicle to a safe place. Already expended $700 plus on towing to an Audi dealer. Turbo failure which I have now learned is very common on this vehicle. Likely failure point is a oil screen, which Audi has known about for probably a decade. Incredible that such a safety issue has not been resolved. Estimate for the repair is $11,000. Vehicle has been perfectly maintained and only 72,000 miles - mostly highway. This is clearly a safety issue that Audi has failed to proactively address. I understand that the oil screen has been redesigned - whether it solves the problem is an open question.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-06-03

  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: WHILE DRIVING AND GETTING OFF A HIGHWAY EXIT THE VEHICLE WITHOUT NOTICE STARTED TO STALL AS IF MISFIRING AND RUNNING ERRATIC WITHOUT NO ENGINE TROUBLE CODES OR WARNING LIGHTS AT A RED LIGHT STOP. I MANAGED TO GET HOME ABOUT HALF MILE AND ONCE PARKED COULDN'T TURN THE VEHICLE ON. IT ONLY CRANKED AND WHEN IT DID TURN ON IT WOULD SHAKE IDLE ERRATIC AND THEN TURN OFF. TOWED IT TO THE DEALER FEW DAYS LATER AND WAS TOLD NEEDED 2 NEW TURBOS AT A COST OF $12K. ASKED HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE AND WAS TOLD THEY GET STARVED OF OIL AND EVENTUALLY FAIL. THEREAFTER DID SOME RESEARCH AND REALIZED THERE ARE COUNTLESS OTHER IN THE AUDI FORUMS WITH SAME ISSUES ON THE AUDI V8 4.0T ENGINE. THERE ARE TSB'S FROM AUDI ADDRESSING HOW TO FIX THIS PROBLEM THAT IT'S A SMALL OIL STRAINER PROBLEM THAT GETS CLOGGED AND STARVES THE TURBOS AND PREMATURELY FAIL. AUDI REVISED THIS STRAINER PART IT SEEMS BUT NEVER WARNED OR ADVISED ANY AUDI OWNERS WITH THESE ENGINES SO IT CAN BE CHANGED BEFORE IT'S TO LATE. I KNOW HAVE 2 BAD TURBOS BECAUSE OF THIS FAULTY DESIGN WHICH CREATES THIS MAJOR EXPENSIVE PROBLEM FOR A FAULTY PART THAT'S $20. THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ON THIS PART BEFORE IT'S TO LATE AND MORE DAMAGE OCCURS TO OTHER AUDI OWNERS WITH SIMILAR ENGINES.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-10-26
  • VIN: WAUR2AFD4EN
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: SUNGLASSES HOLDER WILL NOT STAY CLOSED AND FALLS DOWN BLOCKING MY REARVIEW MIRROR. TRIED SEVERAL TIMES TO CLOSE IT AND IT WILL NOT CLOSE. I CANNOT SEE CLEARLY OUT OF MY REARVIEW MIRROR WHICH IS HAZARDOUS TO MY DRIVING WHEN TRYING TO SWITCH LANES AND/OR TELL HOW CLOSE SOMEONE IS TO MY BUMPER TO PREVENT MY CAR FROM BEING REAR ENDED. I'M WORRIED THAT AN ACCIDENT MAY HAPPEN DUE TO THIS ISSUE. I RESEARCHED THE ISSUE AND APPARENTLY OTHER AUDI DRIVERS ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUE ACCORDING TO ONE AUDI SERVICE FORUM (HTTPS://WWW.AUDIWORLD.COM/FORUMS/Q5-SQ5-MKI-8R-DISCUSSION-129/SUNGLASS-HOLDER-NOT-STAYING-UP-SRSLY-2856965/). THIS ALSO APPEARS TO BE AN ISSUE WITH THE VOLKSWAGON BRANDED CARS.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-12-19
  • VIN: WAURMAFD4EN
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: ISSUE WITH THE WINDSHIELD LEAKING PROFUSELY. THIS LED TO MOISTURE ISSUES INSIDE THE CAR WHEN DRIVING IN THE RAIN, WHICH COULD PRESENT A SERIOUS VISIBILITY HAZARD. THERE ARE ALSO NUMEROUS ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS (MAJOR VEHICLE CONTROL AND DIAGNOSTIC MODULES) LOCATED IN THE TRACKING PATH OF THE WATER WHICH COULD CAUSE SERIOUS ISSUES TO THE DRIVABILITY AND SAFETY OF THE VEHICLE IF IN MOTION. UPON REPLACEMENT OF THE WINDSHIELD IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THERE WAS A COMPLETE SECTION OF THE WINDSHIELD SEALANT MISSING ALONG THE TOP EDGE OF THE WINDSHIELD, NEAR THE REAR VIEW MIRROR ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. I AM A MEMBER OF SEVERAL AUDI VEHICLE FORUMS AND THIS IS A WELL KNOWN AND DOCUMENTED ISSUE THERE. I JUST WANTED TO MAKE THIS AGENCY AWARE OF THE ISSUE BEFORE ANYONE GOT SERIOUSLY HURT OR KILLED DUE TO NOT BEING ABLE TO SEE WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-12-14
  • VIN: WAUR2AFD0EN
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: 2014 AUDI A8 VEHICLE HAS 57534 MILES ON IT, A WELL MAINTAINED VEHICLE BY AUDI DEALERSHIPS. WHEN PASSING A VEHICLE ON A 2 LANE HWY THE PERFORMANCE SEEMED TO BE COMPROMISED. HEARD A GURGLING LIKE SOUND. THE EPC LIGHT CAME ON. PULLED VEHICLE OVER TO A SAFE LOCATION AND VEHICLE WOULD NOT RESTART. DEALERSHIP DIAGNOSED TURBO'S BLOWN AND ENGINE CONTAINS METAL CAUSING TOTAL ENGINE FAILURE. OUR CONCERN IS IF THE ENGINE WOULD HAVE SEIZED UP WHEN PASSING ANOTHER VEHICLE THERE IS A REAL POSSIBILITY THAT AN ACCIDENT COULD OCCUR. THERE ARE A FEW TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS CONCERNING THIS TURBO ISSUE, ONE IN FEBRUARY 2017 AND A PRODUCTION SOLUTION TO THE OIL SUPPLY LINES CAME IN MAY 2018. WHAT ABOUT ALL THE VEHICLES THAT ARE OUT THERE STILL ON THE ROADS NOT UNDER WARRANTY AND OWNERS HAVE NO IDEA THIS ISSUE EXISTS? IT SEEMS TO BE A PROBLEM WITH THE 4.0L ENGINES. TURBO'S. "AUDIZINE" WEBSITE DID A FORUM POLL TITLED 4.0TT BLOWN TURBO POLL. THERE IS ALSO A ISSUE WITH COOLANT LEAKAGE ON THE TURBO'S THAT CAN CAUSE DAMAGE PER TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN MAY 2017. I AM HOPING FOR A RECALL BEFORE AN INJURY OCCURS.

Negative 2014 Audi A8 car reviews

  1. Lorenzo Barton 2025-01-04

The car is stylish and comfortable. Having owned various Mercedes models for over 20 years, I decided to give the Audi A8 a chance over the S class. I purchased a lease return Audi A8 4.0 L from a local dealer three years ago and have put 20,000 miles on it. Although the car is not used daily, it has had several trips to the shop for various reasons, not including regular maintenance. Unfortunately, the Turbos on the car failed at 55,000 miles, which was a surprise to me. The dealer repair shop quoted me $13,000 for the repair, but after getting a second opinion from another Audi dealer, the repair quote went down to $9,000 for the same repair. The service manager was kind enough to advise me to call Audi USA, but unfortunately, after putting in a request, I did not hear back from them for six weeks. When I finally did hear back, they denied my request for assistance without even reviewing the issue. Although I was disappointed with the customer service, I still believe that Audi cars are great looking. However, I have decided to sell the car and purchase another Mercedes. In my experience, other luxury manufacturers have better customer service than Audi.

  2. Roy Weber 2024-10-22

I have owned a 2011 A8 and 2012 A6, and I have found that the basic cars work very well. However, I have had some issues with the technical service department and the national sales team at Audi. Unfortunately, my A8 had an electrical/mechanical issue with the relay that controls the power brake system. I was disappointed to learn that Audi's technical support instructed the local Audi mechanic to wrap insulation around the relay so that I would not hear it closing and opening. They also relocated the relay to another spot in the car so that I would not hear it. I felt that these approaches did not address the core issue of the problem, and instead, it appeared that Audi was trying to mask the issue and hope that I would go away. This is a serious problem with this car, and I did not expect Audi to try to cover it up. I also asked the local sales manager to see what Audi would do for a trade value on my car towards a newer one. Unfortunately, he informed me that Audi would not help out in this matter besides not fixing the issue. Needless to say, I am disappointed with the way Audi has handled this matter, especially for a company that is trying to make inroads in the high-end market.

Positive 2014 Audi A8 car reviews

  1. Quinten Schaefer 2024-11-04

It can be quite costly to repair.

  2. Mack Kuhic 2024-10-29

This is such an elegant automobile! The A8 has acceleration on demand and handles like a much smaller vehicle. It's absolutely class!

  3. Osbaldo Jacobson 2024-10-08

I've only had the car for two weeks, so I can't accurately comment on its reliability. However, I rated all other aspects as excellent, so I expect the reliability to be the same. I previously owned an Audi A4 which was very reliable. I understand that I'm still in the honeymoon phase with this car, but so far it's been great. I've owned a variety of cars in the past, including MB E320 and C280, Acura Legend and TLS, Lexus ES330, BMW 530i and 535i, Mazda Millenia and RX7, Honda Civic and Accord, and even a Triumph TR6. Of course, any new car will have features unheard of a few years ago, but the A8 is everything that the overwhelmingly positive reviews describe.

It's great to hear about your experience with high tech sedans! I noticed that you've owned Audi A8 sedans before, but switched to Mercedes S Class a few years ago. I can definitely understand how the complexity of their electronic systems can be problematic. It's always important to buy from a dealer with 5 star service to ensure that you're getting the best possible experience. Recently, you were intrigued by the 2014 A8L TDI diesel sedan's specs and options, and I'm glad to hear that it does everything right, especially fuel mileage which surpasses your expectations. The A8L is perfectly sized compared to the lumbering S550, and the diesel performance is outstanding. While the electronic gizmos are entertaining, most of them are not necessary for daily use. I did notice that there are some cons, such as lots of road noise from stiff tires, mediocre stereo, and electronic failures, but overall it sounds like you're enjoying your new ride!

Congratulations on your new 2011 A8L! It's great to hear that you were able to test it out in some challenging weather conditions and that it handled so well. It sounds like you did your research before purchasing and made a wise choice with the Audi. While the instruments may be a bit complicated, it's great that you're able to appreciate all the car can do once you get used to them. The Bang and Olufsen sound system is definitely a great feature to have. Enjoy your new ride!
