The Chevrolet Malibu is a mid-size car manufactured and marketed by Chevrolet from model years 1964–1983 and since 1997. The Malibu began as a trim-level of the Chevrolet Chevelle, becoming its own model line in 1978. Originally a rear-wheel drive intermediate, GM revived the Malibu nameplate as a front-wheel-drive car in 1997.
Named after the coastal community of Malibu, California, the Malibu was marketed primarily in North America, with the eighth generation introduced globally. It is currently the only sedan offered by Chevrolet in the U.S.
First generation (Chevelle Malibu, 1964)
The first Malibu was a top-line subseries of the mid-sized Chevrolet Chevelle from 1964 to 1972. Malibus were generally available in a full range of bodystyles including a four-door sedan, two-door Sport Coupe hardtop, convertible and two-seat station wagon. Interiors were more lavish than lesser Chevelle 300 and 300 Deluxe models thanks to patterned cloth and vinyl upholstery (all-vinyl in convertibles and station wagons), deep-twist carpeting, deluxe steering wheel and other items. The Malibu SS performance package was available only as a two-door Sport Coupe hardtop or convertible and added bucket seats, center console (with optional four-speed manual or Powerglide transmissions), engine gauges and special wheelcovers, and offered with any six-cylinder or V8 engine offered in other Chevelles - with the top option being a 300 hp (224 kW; 304 PS) 327 cu in (5.4 L) in 1964.
For 1965, Malibus and other Chevelles received new grilles and revised tail sections and had the exhaust pipes replaced but carried over the same basic styling and bodystyles from 1964. The Malibu and Malibu SS models continued as before with the SS featuring a blacked-out grille and special wheelcovers. Top engine option was now a 350 hp (261 kW; 355 PS) 327 cu in (5.4 L) V8. 201 of the 1965 Malibu SS cars got Regular Production Option (RPO) Z16, which include a heavily modified chassis and Chevy's new 375 horsepower 396 cubic inch V8. All were hardtops, although rumors persist that one convertible was built.
The Malibu SS was replaced in 1966 by a new Chevelle SS-396 series that included a big-block 396 cu in (6.5 L) V8 engine (Canadian market did not receive the SS396 but marketed the former Malibu SS nameplate until January 1967 when it was phased out), heavy duty suspension and other performance equipment. Other SS-396 equipment was similar to Malibu Sport Coupes and convertibles including an all-vinyl bench seat. Bucket seats and console with floor shift were now optional on the SS and for 1966 with the SS now denoting a car with a big-block engine, the bucket seats became a new option on the regular Malibu Sport Coupe and convertible, upon which any six-cylinder or small-block V8 could be ordered. Also new for 1966 was the Chevelle Malibu four-door Sport Sedan hardtop. Styling revisions on all 1966 Chevelles including more rounded styling similar to the full-sized Chevrolets with sail panels and tunneled rear windows featured on two-door hardtop coupes.
For 1967, the same assortment of bodystyles were continued with styling changes similar to all other Chevelles including a new grille and revised tail section with taillights that wrapped around to the side. New this year was a Chevelle Malibu Concours station wagon with simulated woodgrain exterior side panel trim. Front disc brakes were a new option along with a stereo 8-track tape player. The same assortment of drivetrains carried over from 1966 with the top 327 cu in (5.4 L) V8 dropped from 350 to 325 hp (261 to 242 kW; 355 to 330 PS).

- Summary: I bought my 2015 Chevy Malibu in 2016 at 36k miles. No wrecks, 1 owner before myself. No warning lights on when driving from the lot and the car was just what I wanted… tho always a little doubtful because it was pre owned 1) there was always this random, unusual, indescribable smell from the vents where I couldn’t breathe but no one else could smell or experience it. I just kept getting sick. 2) I thought “MY” first 30k miles or so was rolling too fast and 3-5 months in, the ENGINE light popped on. Immediately took it to Chevy who said my engine light was on due to an “airbag” but wouldn’t tell me which unless I paid 70$. 3) Still, driving was not affected so I kept taking it to the Chevy dealer every 3-6 months for the proper maintenance. About 2 years in I go for an oil change at CHEVY: one guy pours RADIATOR fluid in my OIL compartment during the oil change. Just before he realizes it’s the wrong thing and looks to see if I saw, I alert the manager who immediately drains the oil and says it won’t be affected.. and assures me everything is fine. ??? 4) 4 years ownership, the service stability track message started appearing and the ENGINE POWER REDUCED SPEED LIMITED TO 25 MPH starts popping up on the screen and simultaneously the car DANGEROUSLY goes from highway speed to 25mph. ONLY Jesus mercy! That’s a death trap in itself. Still no recalls and no help. Temp fix (get to safety, turn off vehicle, wait 30 sec-1 min and restart) 5) At 150k miles, I returned to get transmission flush.change.check whatever the best procedure was. Chevy says, I wouldn’t because it doesn’t have to be serviced on these vehicle. yet they send me coupons for trans services. 6)JUST put on new tires, oil, oil cabin, and engine filters changed. Car riding smoothly then 4 days later I start it and up pops a message about SERVICE POWER STEERING: drive with care! No Gearshift lights. And it’s an EPS system! Something is WRONG with these cars. 7) Paint defects along pass. side

Body style changed starting 2016. The acceleration is adequate with the 2.5L engine. I wish I had the 2.0L Turbo, but that would mean using premium gas and getting lower MPG. The ride is comfortable and it handles well.

I have a 2015 Malibu 1LTZ, which comes with all the bells and whistles. This car is definitely worth the money, even though it may be a little more expensive than its competitors. The ride is sublime, and it's even better than the ride of a 2012 Buick I owned. The car is beautiful both on the inside and outside. For instance, the tail lights are LED dotted squares, which make a huge difference compared to the solid squares on other models. The inside is a beautiful light cream color, and it has heated leather seats. The big touch screen lifts up to reveal a secret compartment, and it has the same instruments that (I believe) are in the similar years Camaro that are that signature Chevy Ice clue. That same Ice blue glow lines the entire dash all the way back both front doors. It's an experience being in this car at night. There's also plenty of space inside. I would absolutely recommend this car.

This is a great car for the price and ride. You can really feel the quality of the ride, and it's comparable to more expensive cars. I've driven this car for 47,000 miles and haven't had any issues. While some critics have mentioned the back seat space, I find it to be on par with other cars in this size range. Overall, it's a fantastic mid-size car!

This car is extremely uncomfortable to drive. As a long-time Chevrolet and GM customer, I am disappointed with the quality of this vehicle. Unfortunately, GM has not provided any support or assistance. When I reached out for help, I was told that I should have shopped around more. This response is unacceptable and does not reflect the level of customer service that I expect from GM.

If you're considering purchasing this car, I would recommend doing some research on the start/stop system beforehand. During my test drive, I experienced some issues with the system, such as a delay in the battery warming up and a slight miss while driving on the highway. Additionally, the transmission felt clunky in regular traffic. In comparison, my previous Nissan Altima had a smoother ride and better gas mileage, without a start/stop system. While the salesman did not mention this feature, it's important to test drive the car for an extended period of time to fully evaluate its performance. I rent cars very often due to work, and this time they gave me a Malibu. Although I usually ask for something else, I was pleasantly surprised. However, I found the driver's seat to be uncomfortable as it is too low and obstructs the view over the dashboard. If you raise the seat, your right leg has to press down on the seat to reach the pedals. Perhaps this car is designed for people with longer legs. My biggest complaint, however, is the steering. I suspect it may be due to the car being a rental and having been abused, but the steering gives a sudden change whenever I turn it slightly right. This can be extremely dangerous, but I was too lazy to switch it out.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with a 2015 Malibu that I drove for about 35k miles per year. I made sure to keep up with all the recommended maintenance during the 2 years that I had the car. Unfortunately, one day while the car was parked, it caught on fire and burned down completely. It was a scary experience, but thankfully my children and I were able to get out safely. I just wanted to let you know about my experience with this car.
