2000 Dodge Avenger problems

dodge logo

The Dodge Avenger is a front-wheel drive, mid-sized sedan that was marketed by Dodge. The Avenger made its North American debut in 1994 for the 1995 model year as a coupe that was produced until 2000. The model name was reintroduced to the market as a four-door sports sedan starting in 2007 for the 2008 model year. The Dodge Avenger name had earlier been used on South African market Hillman Avengers in 1975 and 1976.

The 2014 model year marked the end of Avenger production as the mid-sized models for both the Dodge and Chrysler brands were consolidated into the new Chrysler 200 introduced for the 2015 model year while Dodge received the new compact Dart.

Nameplate history

The first use of the Dodge Avenger name was on a badge engineered version of the European Hillman Avenger, exclusive to South Africa. The same car was sold in North America as the Plymouth Cricket between 1972 and 1974. In place of the Hillman engines, this version used a Peugeot 1.6 litre engine (as also installed in locally assembled Peugeot 404s) in order to satisfy local content requirements. The Dodge-branded Avenger was introduced in 1975 and was then renamed Chrysler in 1976. This generation has nothing in common with later Dodge Avengers. After Chrysler ZA was merged into Sigma in 1976, the Avenger was soon cancelled to allow Sigma to free up more production capacity for the Mazda 323.

Negative 2000 Dodge Avenger car reviews

  1. Pablo Padberg 2025-01-05

When I first bought the car, I had to replace the alternator due to its high mileage of 151,000 miles. I also had to purchase a few other things, but that's to be expected. Unfortunately, the road noise is quite loud, but I was able to improve it by installing better speakers. The power steering pump is also quite noisy, and I anticipate it will need to be replaced soon. Additionally, the rims are experiencing some peeling of the clear coat, which is not very appealing. However, if you're primarily interested in the car's exterior, it may still be a good choice. That's what I did, and I'm happy with my decision!

  2. Uriah Sawayn 2024-11-27

I hope you're enjoying your 2000 Avenger Es! It's a great car for the money, with a sharp look and some pep to it. The only downside is that it looks faster than it drives...

  3. Donato Olson 2024-05-28

The car has some decent power, which I like, but unfortunately it has too many problems. The brakes burn out too quickly and the transmission doesn't shift well at all. Additionally, the car clunks on every bump, which can be quite annoying. The ride noise is also quite loud and it's difficult to see out of the back window, especially for those who are not very tall. On the positive side, I do appreciate the power everything and sunroof. However, given all the dangers I've read about on other websites, I cannot recommend this car at all.

  4. Lew Harvey 2024-04-18

This car seems to be costing you a lot of money.

  5. Magnus Becker 2024-02-05

I purchased my Avenger brand new in the year 2000 for a sticker price of $22,740. Unfortunately, it has depreciated in value and is now worth $8,500. While it may look nice, it has proven to be uncomfortable and difficult to find parts for. I have had some negative experiences with Dodge's service and parts, which has left me hesitant to purchase another Dodge product in the future.

Positive 2000 Dodge Avenger car reviews

  1. Jasen Quigley 2024-09-27

I bought my Avenger new and I'm very pleased with my decision. It's a dependable and forgiving car, typical of the Dodge/Mitsubishi cooperative's 'Diamond Star' vehicles. The power put out by this car is generous and it has plenty of power to keep me in trouble (generally commuting 45 miles each way on interstates at 80 MPH). Fuel consumption is still good at 32 MPG.

  2. Rogers Christiansen 2024-09-27

When I was 15, my Dad bought me this car. It has been 5 years since then and I must say, it has treated me so well. It was my first car and I put it through a lot, but it never let me down. I had driven it for 90,000 miles with a new transmission (I was really rough on it) and it never gave me any real problems. It was also very easy to do basic maintenance on. Unfortunately, I was recently in an accident and my beloved car was totaled. However, I am grateful to say that the car saved my life! Every inch of it was smashed except where I was sitting. I am now looking at getting another one because I loved that car so much.

  3. Quentin Doyle 2024-09-19

My dad bought me this paprika red car back in 2006 when I was 18 and living in Ohio. At the time, it had almost 75,000 miles on it. This car has been a part of my life for a long time and has kept my family safe through harsh winters and long journeys. When I recently moved to Texas, it had no problems driving the 1,300 miles here. The only thing to be mindful of is the low ground clearance, which can make it easy to hit the front on the sidewalk or wherever you park. In the 3 1/2 years that I've owned it, I've had no major mechanical problems, just replaced the front tires. With 110,000 miles on the clock, it's still going strong. I'm almost done paying it off and I'm looking forward to keeping it around for a few more years!

  4. Cade Leuschke 2024-09-09

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my car that I got back in summer '05. It's a beautiful car that looks like it's worth a lot more than it really is. While it could use a bit more all-around power, you really feel the most power uphill. However, it's still a very fun car to drive, and it handles great. I've been lucky enough to have had no problems with it since I got it, and it's at 97,656 miles now.

  5. Brown Bergstrom 2024-08-14

Hey there! I wanted to share with you that I bought my beautiful car back in 2005. It's been a trusty companion, with 245,000 miles on it and only one tune-up needed. I've had to spend a bit on repairs, but nothing too crazy - just around $2,000. Well, except for that one time I got ripped off for about $1,500 from the Dodge Dealer. But overall, it's been a great ride!
